Chuck Renewal Campaign Update

Following yesterday’s non-announcement by NBC, speculation about why the announcement has been delayed, and when it will come, rivals the “what’s the game changer?” speculation leading up to the season finale. We’ll post Nikki Finke’s spec, since it pretty much sums up what everyone is saying:

Chuck, this gets complicated. Turns out NBC didn’t like David E Kelley’s Warner Bros pilot Legally Mad. Problem is, there’s a $2 million penalty that gets paid to WB if the network doesn’t pick up the show. So NBC is hoping to work a deal tying the renewal of Chuck, which is also a WB show, to a pass on paying that Legally Mad penalty.

Just in case we forgot the “business” part of show business, here’s a reminder. Or, if you’re a glass-half-full person like me, this shows that Chuck has the sort of backing that makes it “leverage” for NBC. As long as they don’t leverage themselves right out of a third season!

Last night’s online screening of “Chuck vs. the Colonel” seems to have gone over well, considering the short notice. Next week the plan is to screen “Chuck vs. the Ring” at 8PM EST on Monday, spread the word. And don’t forget to enter the Watch/Buy/Share/Write/WIN! giveaway if you haven’t already – the deadline is tonight at 11:59PM PST.

And now, some words of support from Chuck from two of the show’s youngest fans:

  1. The numbers for Illegal downloads are released in raw data so advertisers can take those in consideration if they wish to. How that information is gathered is anyone’s guess but actually Chuck usually ranks preety high on that list… what would you expect from a geek show?

Business-wise, product placement does work even with illegal downloads and Chuck, in my opinion, is a true pioneer in using product placement the right way (ok, the Sopranos only drank coca-cola, but that came and went in a breeze. The thing is that unlike good old advertisement gives money to the networks, product placement gives it to the producing company (WB in Chuck’s case) so th effect of product placement in the NBC-WB deal is that WB can sell their show cheaper as they get money from product placement.

But does illegal downloads change how expensive they can sell their placements? I don’t know, I think so, for the reasons stated above. But yet, advertisers may try to bring the price down by stating that illegal watching is just that, illegal, and should not be taking into consideration, even tough everyone know it should be. In the end it depends on who can handle the pressure better, the advertisers or the producer company.

  2. Well I as I said before, I think both of them, the producers, and the networks, should compromise and give the fans what they want, a show that ends properly…

And to make my posts a little less marketing-oriented… Let’s just say Yvonne S. is sooo hot, it makes me want to be 17 again (if you know what I mean).

And, one more thing, if they actually give us a third season, it’ll be a delight watching Chuck kicking ass with his newly acquired information…

  3. Well focculare, considering she is 26, I have no idea what good would going back to 17 do to you 😉
    That reminds me… I’m almost 26!

As for the Neo-Chuck, I just hope they keep the kung-fu leashed. While it is a cool concept for a change, I sure don’t wanna lose the “stay in the car” running joke. That said, I trust the writers.

  4. Yeah, well.. maybe they can turn the table a little bit with the new Chuck, you know, with him doing the saving instead of her saving him… that would be good for a couple episodes, leading to romance and so forth… I think there’s a lot of material that can be written still…

I’m 33, married, with a child, so probably going back to 17 with you know the hormones and the crush on the star from the TV… but only at 17… 18 tops… older than that it’s just weird…

    Cheers

  5. Well, the way I see it, as long as it doesn’t evolve into stalking or unhealthy obsession, you’re never to old to admire a beautiful woman.
And on that point I just want to say that I hope she doesn’t let herself be changed by the many bad influences in Hollywood as, currently, she is one of the best role models for young women trying to get into acting. She didn’t take shortcuts (going to college, starting small, etc.), favors workout instead of unhealthy diets (and judging by those muscles, I’d say she works out alot) and while she’s stunningly preety, she doesn’t shove it into everyone’s face and tries to act the supermodel. That’s a great person by my book and I’ll be upset if someone convinces her to go fix those slightly off-angle of hers just to make her look more doll-ish, there’s enough of that already.

If the new intersect is written correctly into the show, it can be the best thing ever as it opens a whole new world of possibilities. Yet, the aspect I hated the most about Prison Break is that the full body tatoos were the answer to everything: How do you know that? Tatoo. Why does he go there? Tatoo. How will he do it? Tatoo! I sure hope the writers don’t let me down and follow that path as that’s just cheating.

Then again the Prison Break writers can’t hold a candle to Chuck’s IMO so I guess I shouldn’t worry that much.
