The ratings for Chuck 3.04 are in and they are worth celebrating. Without a 2-night, 3-episode premiere event behind it, “Chuck vs. Operation Awesome” held steady with approximately 6.6 million viewers and a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo. For comparison, last Monday’s episode, “Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muerta”, pulled approximately 7.3 million viewers and a 2.6 in the 18-49 demo. The fact that the demo only dropped .1 from week to week has to make NBC feel good.

Now if these ratings a only being pulled from people with Nielsen ratings boxes and not people like me with att or people with comcast then the ratings system is a lot of crap IMO.

They are the accepted ratings within the industry, so grousing about them doesn’t help us much.

I was just wondering about the ratings this season, so thanks for posting this. How do the ratings compare to last season so far? In general, it seems that CHUCK has received more advertising & buzz than last year. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have started watching too (which means ‘squat’, I know) but still it makes me hopeful that it is finally getting some much deserved attention.

Last night Comcast had a problem so the TV did not work till 10 pm. This affecteded millions of people here in Florida so that is my theory as to why the ratings dropped. I had to wait till this morning to watch last nights ep. It was torture not being able to support CHUCK last night.

I know the total viewership numbers dropped and that looks a little scary, but focus on the demo: 2.6 to 2.5. That number is what the advertisers and the network are watching. Right now, in the coveted 18-49 demographic, Chuck is NBC’s second-highest scripted show (behind The Office) and third overall (Biggest Loser is #1). That’s good news!

In comparison what are “The Office” numbers?

The last new episode aired December 10 with 9.2 million viewers and a 4.4 in the demo. This season it’s averaging 8.1 million viewers and a 4.0 in the demo. (source)

I hear ya. The sound was messed up for half of the episode through my providor and I had to turn it off. It was torture. I still pained through and watched what I could later. Good Episode!

It is somewhat troubling that total viewership dropped by approximately 700,000 viewers. This maybe the result of the introduction of the PLI’s. Something to keep an eye on.

No, it might have had more to do with the return of 24 on it’s second night of two hour shows. I think the numbers will stay around 2.5 up to the Olympics. Hopefully, it won’t lose steam with the three week break.
As for the ratings, I keep saying this: Chuck doesn’t have to beat HIYMM or House, it only needs to beat what Heroes did at 8:00 in the fall. It is doing that. Heroes was running a 2.0 at 8:00 in the fall. It’s doing even worse at 9:00. If NBC has to make a decision on what show to keep on Monday and what show to dump, the ratings will be the number one indicator. Plus, Heroes costs more to make.

That’s why I never understood why Heroes renewal was almost a given and and Chuck had to scratch and claw to be renewed.

Here’s the numbers for all networks last night:
Time Net Show 18-49 Rating/Shr Viewers (Millons)
8:00 CBS How I Met Your Mother 4.0/10 10.52
ABC The Bachelor: On The Wings of Love 3.6/9 10.13
FOX 24 3.3/8 10.56
NBC Chuck 2.5/6 6.66
CW One Tree Hill 1.1/3 2.20
8:30 CBS Accidentally on Purpose 3.5/9 9.64
9:00 CBS Two and a Half Men 5.3/12 16.20
ABC The Bachelor: On The Wings of Love 4.1/9 11.12
FOX 24 3.6/8 11.45
NBC Heroes 1.8/4 3.93
CW Life Unexpected 1.2/3 2.74
9:30 CBS The Big Bang Theory 5.2/12 14.99
10:00 CBS CSI: Miami 3.6/10 13.16
ABC Castle 2.8/8 9.44
NBC The Jay Leno Show 1.3/3 4.61
Now, I know that we’re not excited about a 4th place finish at 8:00, but let’s put things in perspective. Chuck easily scored the highest of NBC’s three shows last night. Not only that, but CBS, ABC and Fox all had higher numbers in the 9:00 hour than in the 8:00 hour with NBC dropping considerably after 8:00. Chuck is the only show that was competitive for NBC last night. That’s all the network wants on Monday because they conceded it to CBS along time ago.
How the Bachelor continues to get ratings, I’ll never understand, other than we are just a train-wreck watching society in America.

I find the whole rating system offensive. :+) Over the summer I turned 50, according to the rating system, they don’t care if I watch it because I am going to watch it anyway. Guess that give me a license to not feel guilty about recording it live and skipping through the commercials. But then I’d have to miss the Honda commercials of Awesome, Ellie, and Morgan on their way to and from the Vancouver Olympics. I suppose there are always exceptions to the rules…but it would be less frustrating if they took into account the actual people that are watching the show and buying the sponsor’s products, not a characture of them. Ok enough complaining about the rating system. Glad we have lots of people watching Chuck, let’s keep getting the word out.

DVR numbers are usually released two weeks after the episode airs. We should get some DVR numbers this week for Chuck. Chuck usually does well in DVR numbers, easily in the top 20 TV shows that are DVR.
Numbers will be posted in the forums or you can visit TVByTheNumbers.

DVR numbers are a Catch-22. Sure, it’s great that more viewers are watching the program, but advertisers don’t like them because they assume that the viewers are fast-forwarding through the commercials–and let’s admit it, they’re right.

does anyone know roughly what number does the demo have to be to ensure chuck gets renewed for a 4th season?

No one really knows for sure. Angela Bromstad, head of NBC drama development, said that Chuck needed to average what Heroes was getting in the 8pm hour. So far, Chuck has easily beaten Heroes.
To be safe, a 2.5 SHOULD be a safe number for renewal.

With the whole Jay Leno fiasco Chuck chances of being renewal are improving i just hope they order and additional 9episodes to give it a full season. If only Chuck in a better time slot then the ratings would jump! Heroes is a show i do not even watch because it sucks!

I may be biased but Chuck is the best show on television by far. The subtle and blatant humor, the action, the story lines all pull you in. No show on tv compares. I do not find the other sit-coms funny or the other action shows entertaining. Did you watch Human Target? This show is a total crap-fest – poor acting and the script made me cringe. If it were not for Chuck, I would not watch TV at all. NBC should commit to a 4th and 5th season because of the absolute quality of the acting, the script, the directing, the stunts, and the humor. It’s the best show on TV and without question the best show on NBC. Go Chuck…

Now that the season has started, the ratings are decent, its time to bump the PR on Chuck again! Don’t lose the momentum that has been building, another CHUCK campaign is in order!
