RATINGS: “Role Models” Sees Drop

The fast overnight ratings for “Chuck vs. the Role Models” are in and with first-run competition from every network, the episode dropped to a 1.9 in the 18-49 demo. After 2 weeks of 2.1 ratings, and a lighter tone for the show overall, this is a disappointment. Approximately 5.28 million viewers tuned in to watch Chuck and Sarah (and Morgan) combat a tiger.

According to TV By The Numbers, DWTS and Castle are the only Monday night show NOT to post a loss from last week; DWTS was up and Castle‘s numbers were flat versus last week. Timeslot competitor House posted its lowest numbers of the season. So where was everyone?

Note: fans in Hawaii report that Chuck was pre-empted for a special election debate. One fan went so far as to state that they will not be voting in the special election as a result. Would uber-patriot Casey approve?

Updated 5:05PM: Just read the finals for last night. No change for Chuck, but Castle adjusted down which means DWTS is the only show that didn’t see a loss from its last new episode. Ouch.

  1. No worries, most every show was down across the board. Good weather will do that.

    • Good Weather combined with NHL and NBA playoffs (both the Bruins and the Celtics were on lastnight which likely depleted viewers in the Boston area(

  2. What does this mean? Did our chances for another season drop with the ratings?
Or do you guys think NBC will take into consideration that it wasn’t just Chuck that dropped in the ratings.

  3. I really hope that next week’s rating will be much better! Something like 2.5.
Why did the ratings of almost all the shows went down?

  4. I really hope that we get a fourth season! I really wanna help with the ratings but I can’t watch live. I’m from another country and just try to help by voting in polls and promoting chuck..

    • I know how you’re feeling now. I’m from Europe and I can’t watch live. It’s really unfair because they need just numbers from Nielsen family.

    • I share your suffering since I’m in France.
We, misfits among the misfits, count “for nothing”, cannot watch the show live and get the bad news of the rating to ruin our pleasure to get Chuck on itunes when it is time for us to enjoy our weekly dose of Chuck.
Just kidding, nothing can spoil a good time with Sarah (and Chuck, yep, forgot Chuck… and the others, there are others in the show although I’m not really sure… 😀 )

  5. There were a lot of sport games going on last night too.

    • Here in Boston both the Celtics and Bruins had playoff games on the tube. The Red Sox were on as well. I’m sure that played a large part nationwide.

  6. I really wonder how they go about figuring these out, and how realistic they are. There’s lots of folks that DVR, Hulu, etc. I don’t have a neilsen box, but if I did, it still wouldn’t come close to capturing what i really watch.

  7. oh no, it’s so sad and very bad for us for fans 🙁

  8. At least we get to enjoy four more hours of Chuck. It was a good ride.

  9. I think it’s unfair for us because you know it’s only about “Nielsen family” and not about all people. And Chucks fans are many. Not only from USA I’m actually from Europe and I can’t watch live.

  10. I’m going to hold out hope. It ain’t over ’til it’s over. NBC is in a bad way right now, so who knows? Maybe a 2.0+ next week will be enough.

  11. Oh no 🙁 does that ruin our chances of renewal? 1.9 does sound rather bad. I’m really scared now.

  12. I know that at least in Boston there was a Red Sox game, the Bruins game was on, and the Celtics played last night. I imagine other teams from other states had playoff/post season games as well which may explain the ratings drop across all networks.

    • I hope so. We need Chuck season 4

    • I taped the Cavs-Celtics game and watched Chuck live but I bet there were a bunch of people that didn’t, thinking they could catch it later. I’m sure that hurt. It’s hard to beat LeBron James, even if you are a TV show. 🙂

  13. I’m really upset right now…:(

  14. This is disappointing, but I don’t think that this is cause for us to start panicking.

Keep in mind that this past Sunday, Nellie Andreeva from Deadline Hollywood reported that “[Chuck’s] chances for renewal are considered very good–and certainly a lot better than last year…”

If that’s the case, I don’t believe that one down week would be enough for NBC execs to axe the show, especially given that with the exceptions of Dancing With The Stars and Castle, all shows across all networks showed ratings drops.

  15. @Matt: agreed, but we’ve got to get next week’s numbers up over 2.0 again. Tell all your family and friends to watch live next Monday. Heck, lock them in a room guarded by a tiger if you have to!

  16. 🙁 This is not good. This was the ep that NBC was supposed to decide to either can or renew CHUCK. That goofy smile CHUCK never fails to leave me with is gone now. This is “NOT AWESOME!” :\'(

    • Keep in mind, all the shows across all the networks took a ratings hit except for DWTS and Castle…NBC’s execs will surely take that into account.

  17. Have hope guys. Chuck is a smaller show, yes, and I’m sure NBC knows it. But it’s relatively cheap, and they have a great cast in Chuck. We’re on one of the hardest, if not THE hardest, nights of television also.

And I do think we make a difference. We may be some of the most active fans ever. How many fanbases do you know of that stage “flash mobs” across the country? Religiously support Subway as a corporate sponsor? How many thousands of dollars were raised for the AHA? How many fanbases are able to orchestrate a giant party with the entire cast of their favorite show?

And we’ve won nearly online poll out there for Chuck, which has undoubtedly raised some eyebrows.

Have faith guys. Ratings aren’t the only thing on Chuck’s resume for renewal.

    • I hope. well now we need to vote chuck on http://bit.ly/a0Ojxn

      • OK I brought it up to 32,200 for chuck Burn Notice is at 66,594 we need some serious nerd herd help here

this is the tv inside pulse vote for best television show

      • The problem is we’re now talking about my two favorite shows (with White Collar, which has the actor formerly known as Bryce Larkin, a close 3rd). These are probably the two best written shows on television RIGHT NOW. Tough decision, but I voted for the Chuckster.

  18. hey there!
    hum…i´m quite sad.
yesterday was a huge day for chucktv.net and several fans, you don´t deserve those numbers.
but also, i think last episode was not so good, didn´t expected something like that.
hard to manage four couples, to wait for the final moments with ellie and devon.
but i have faith the next episode will rock our chuck world.
the promo is better than last episode and “Doc!” is on.

Congratulations for “flash mob” iniciative. I hope that yesterday was a loveday day for the team chucktv.net

let´s talk about our beloved show, in our language! 🙂

  19. First, a correction (or clarification) to the main post: HIMYM posted a gain from last week (in share and total viewers), though last week’s episode was a re-run and this week’s was new.

Now on to the numbers, and the numbers aren’t good.

While total viewership across all networks dropped ~6.2% for the 8pm hour, Chuck’s viewership saw a ~11.7% drop. DWTS saw a larger drop than Chuck for total viewers (~18.2%), and House saw a smaller drop (~8.4%). This week was also Chuck’s lowest total viewer count of the season, and 3rd lowest when you weight it against total viewership across all networks.

The not-quite-as-bad news is that while Chuck’s 18-49 rating dropped by 0.2, so did DWTS, while House dropped 0.3. I can’t call this good news, as that is still a larger percentage drop for Chuck than either House or DWTS, and is quite likely due to the new episode of HIMYM. It is also a 3-way tie for Chuck’s worst 18-49 rating of the season.

    A few other comparative notes:
-This is the first week Chuck hasn’t been up against at least one rerun since March 8th. That night it had a 2.3 18-49 rating and total viewership of 6.31, though that was against “The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding” on ABC and not DWTS which performs significantly better
-DWTS is the real killer: Chuck is averaging a 2.0 18-49 rating and 5.69m total viewers since DWTS started, compared to 2.4 and 6.75 against The Bachelor. Also, Chuck’s best numbers while up against DWTS this season are worse than it’s worst numbers while up against the Bachelor
-Pre-DWTS episodes were trending slowly downward in numbers (with one uptick from the first episode after the Olympics), post-DWTS episodes have seen no solid trend in the direction of the numbers

  20. I was so bummed when I saw the ratings…..I really enjoyed last night’s episode. I really like how the C/S spy and romantic partnership is being set up. I just hope we will see more then four more episodes of it……

  21. Hold steady, guys and girls…we just need to keep watching the show live and encouraging others to do the same. The comment from that Deadline Hollywood reporter about Chuck’s renewal chances being better than last year’s make me optimistic…the numbers don’t look good for this week, but I’m sure that NBC will take into account that Chuck wasn’t the only show to lose ground, even if it did lose more ground than others.

Just a little while longer, everybody…we’ll get a Season 4 yet!

  22. Everybody has to remember this as well, a recent article was talking about the possible renewal for both Chuck and Heroes. Now the president of NBC said that more than likely both shows will be given another season. Heroes had very bad ratings all last season, but they are still considering it. With Chuck averaging a 2.0, which is considerably higher than Heroes I still think we have a good shot. We just have to continue to watch live and hold our breath til the final decision, which is coming up in a couple of days!

  23. Bit annoying but we’re just about holding steady.

Even though the ratings aren’t ideal, NBC needs to look at the show itself and it’s fanbase. Of all the shows on TV right now, Chuck is the one that’s come the farthest. Chuck steadily peaked through 3.01 – 13 (which was yet another brilliant “season finale!”) and so far 3.13+ are continuing to take the show to all new heights.

I think NBC must acknowledge that they hold the key to the one show that holds the best writing on TV and us: the most die-hard-est fan base ever known to a TV show. All they need to do is maybe revise the timeslot and airdate (as far away from DWTS as possible) and turn that key to let Chuck reach all new heights in a fourth season.

    See sense already, NBC!

  24. (Sorry, didn’t realise the
person above was just Sam aswell :p )

  25. The halo reach beta was also released yesterday and I know there wwere about 500,000 people playing at the time chuck was on. Alot of people playing would be in the 18-49 demo. So there is another reason why the ratings are lower.

    • That’s an excellent point, Steven, I hadn’t thought of that. People 18 years old and up who play video games are a *huge* part of Chuck’s target audience, so it makes sense that the Halo Reach beta could have some effect on the show’s viewership. Having said that, I think it was the sporting events and weather that were the biggest factors in the ratings of shows across all the networks trending down.

  26. I don’t know if it will help but I just uploaded my Chuck Vs the Role Models video review. I thought the episode was well done and had something for everybody. I am a little upset by the low ratings. Then again like i said I don’t know how Tv ratings and stuff works. My job is game industry stuff, so reviewing episodes of Tv shows is un charted waters for me. I will post the link when its done processing. Does anybody know if NBC is going to show the episode for people that couldn’t see it due to a basket ball game? Wouldn’t that be common sense?

  27. Just wanted to say am absolutely loving Chuck and am hoping for a 4th season. I’m stuck in limbo at the moment as I live in the uk. I’ve purchased both season 1 & 2 boxsets and am eagerly awaiting season 3 to be shown over here. I’m showing my support by joining every group I find and signing every petition I see. Here’s to Season 4!!!!

  28. Apparently, my previous comments were deleted because they were deemed “unrelated to ratings” so I guess I’ll try again with some editing.

I think the gimmicky writing/storylines might have something to do with poor viewership/ratings. Frankly, if the current level of writing continues, even if it’s renewed, it won’t last — it will just get canceled one season later which really is a shame because it’s one of my favorite shows.

  29. Also, keep in mind that NBC has picked up JJAbrams spy show ‘Undercovers’ – and it would very much work as a lead in to Chuck on an NBC ‘Spy Night’ – to me, that appears like a perfect set up for NBC… so maybe renewal thoughts are in their minds???

    • The whole problem with the JJ Abrams news is that most networks would see the shows as too similar. Both have couples who are spys together…..I am very disheartened and pessimistic. I am loving the mini season and see some great fodder for the writers to really produce some great stories if they had a 4th Season….. 🙁

  30. I am 51 years old and it can assure that I have seen many series in my life and Chuck is in the rancking of the best 5 that I have seen. The problem I believe that it is that NBC cannot manage the good product that has in his hands. I consider Chuck a series of worship like Friends and it would be a shame that was cancelled.

  31. Once again, no promotion. I watched NBC all week long. When I’m not watching a specific show on another network, and I’m just doing casual background-noise viewing, NBC is my default setting (my show of loyalty to the network for carrying “Chuck”). I work from home so I see “Today” and shows throughout the day and evening. And NO PROMOTION OF “CHUCK”! Other shows get promos days ahead of their airing. But “Chuck” only got spots the day of. Seems as if NBC has a death wish for the show. Maybe they think that with flash mobs and Subway eaters, the show is self-promoting. But NBC can’t rely on the choir preaching to itself. They could have the audience they wanted if they put forth the effort. Maybe they just don’t want it.

  32. Ouch Chuck
The season 3 is obviously less brilliant than last season, but why this show has ever had more people willing to saving instead of watching it actually?? That’s the point

  33. I know in Oregon NBC was experiencing station difficulties…freezing, skipping, etc…so I know most people changed the channel because the station in Oregon was down during CHUCK and part of whatever show came after chuck. I had to watch the episode on line last night. SUCKS!

  34. Sorry I meant the episode was good. Just SUCKS that the station was down when Chuck was on Monday

  35. I wonder about the impact of the NBA playoffs, here in Orlando the Magic played on Monday night at 8 on TNT last week and game 4 of their series against Atlanta in next Monday. Given a sell out crowd at the O arena and heavy TV watching, I have got to think that will hurt Chuck here and Atlanta.

  36. The Celtic / Cavs game preempted more NBC affiliates

  37. Bill Klingaman

Can someone explain to me why watching Chuck live matters—–I thought unless
your a nielsen household—who would know. As someone who works during that
time frame—live is not an option.

  38. Greetings from Malaysia. It is unfair that they only count the number of “Nielsen viewers” 🙁

    I want MORE CHUCK! 😀

  39. Hi , I’m french and i’m really worried !
I have a question: that means if ratings of Chuck vs the tooth (the episode of the next week) don’t increase, we won’t never get a 4th season?

  40. Hi ! I’m french and I’m really worried
So, I have a question: it means that if ratings of the episode of the next week (Chuck vs the tooth) don’t increase, we won’t never get a 4th season? 🙁

    Thanks 🙂

  41. Guys no need to worry. Here’s a bit of news that might help. According to yahoo news, they put tv shows thats on the chopping block and in danger. The shows they mentioned that are looking good is Chuck. We’ll see.

    http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/tv.tvguide.com/tv.tvguide.com-your-favorite-show-danger

  42. As I mentioned before, I think Chuck being up against the NBA playoff games is hurting us here in Orlando (game 4 v. Atlanta tips off at 8 PM again).

The local paper is reporting that Saturday’s game 3 (5 PM tip off) drew 163,700 viewers including $91,600 in the 25-54 demo here in the Orlando area.

I will be watching Chuck and catching the 2nd half on live TV.
