SPOILERS: More Clues About Robin Givens’ New Character

Robin Givens begins a multi-episode arc on Chuck beginning with episode 4.16, “Chuck vs. the Masquerade”. So far we know that she’s a director of the National Clandestine Service (NCS), a division of the CIA, and is interested in recruiting Casey. In a couple of new spoiler columns, Robin gives us more clues about what her character, Jane Bentley, is up to.

From Ausiello:

Question: Chuck fanatic here. Got any more details about Robin Givens’ new boss lady character? —Patti
Ausiello: NCS agent Jane Bentley “is there to offer Casey an opportunity to set up a new team, a new operation,” explains Givens, who debuts on the NBC comedy next week. “It’s an offer that’s somewhat enticing and would shake things up… He wants to keep her at arm’s length, but she’s coming to him at a time when it’s hard for him to just dismiss what she has to offer.”

From TV Guide:

Any new missions coming up on Chuck? — Frankie
NATALIE: Much to the chagrin of Chuck and Sarah, Casey is going to be enticed away from Team Intersect by Bentley (Robin Givens), General Beckman’s frenemy. “She presents him with things he knows are true: This has been your longest assignment; your team doesn’t need you anymore,” Givens tells us. “You were the best sharpshooter and now you’re bartending; you’re doing paperwork. So she presents him with an offer that he can’t say no to.” Two of his new team members include past Gretas Stacy Keibler and Isaiah Mustafa, whose real names will be revealed.

She’s right, Casey has been seeing less and less field action as part of Team Bartowski. For a man like him, that has to grate. The clue about the Gretas is also intriguing. Stacy and Isaiah return in episode 4.18 “Chuck vs. the A-Team”, written by Phil Klemmer who returns post-Undercovers, so I think it’s safe to assume that the A-Team in question includes Casey and these two Gretas. Does this mean Casey has accepted her offer? And have the Gretas been CIA/NCS plants to gauge Casey’s readiness to lead a new team?

  1. My father and my brother would give up the show entirely if Casey and the Gretas (however awesome they may be) form a new team. We love you Casey!

    • I understand the concern here, but my guess is that this new development is meant to only shake things up temporarily. For example, we don’t know whether Bently (Robin Givens) is good or bad. Maybe it turns out that she is secretly part of Volkov (sp?). In any event, I can’t imagine Casey being part of some other team permanently.

  2. While it’s true that Casey has seen less field (and screen) time in the last few episodes, I think that the situation with Alex’s mom is what might drive him to leave. The stuff he said to Chuck last episode shows that he is not taking it as well as he may put on, so the chance to just get away from it all would be very tempting.

That said, I can see him leaving Team Bartowski (with the ability/promise to keep in touch, like he was ready to in the season 2 finale), but I can’t see him leaving Alex again.

  3. Smells like a set up to me. Casey will take the assignment,
find out he’s been double crossed, then Chuck and Sarah
will have to get him out of the pickle he’s in.

  4. Smells like a set up to me. Casey will take the new job then
find out he’s been double crossed. Chuck and Sarah will get
him out of the pickle he’s in, then he’ll return to Team B.

  5. I wonder National Clandestine Service=(NCS) Clandestine Attack Team= (Cats) Sound like Clandestine runs ramped in the CIA

  6. Casey working with the Old Spice king. EPICNESS!!!!!

  7. NCS is a division of the CIA. Casey works for the NSA, so he is considering a cross-agency jump. (He once said a dead CIA agent is a gold star in his book). And why? Because he tends bar as a cover on missions? Sarah has worn a Nerd Herd outfit or played the drunken floozie when called on, and Chuck has played a waiter. When the need for a sniper arose, Casey was the one to ice Rafe Kruger. I think his reason for wanting to leave is more personal than professional. He has struggled with the development of feelings, and has questioned the wisdom of making friends. I think that Casey feels like the odd-man out in the trio since Chuck and Sarah bonded, sees his daughter slipping away to Morgan, and Kathleen to her new beau. Much as broken-hearted Sarah retreated into the familiar lovelessness that Shaw offered in season 3, Casey is tempted into the familiarity of lone-wolfhood.

    • Hello Doctor Bob:

I had to comment on your analysis of Casey. I think it hss a lot of merit.

The manner you have outline Casey’s motiviation makes a lot of sense. We have seen elements as you stated for reasons that Casey might wish to leave.

Also, I remember a conversation he had with Alex (can’t remember the episode) where he stated to Alex that he felt he was getting soft and that he would not be as effective when he would get a new assignement. He stated that he needed to be sharp and indicated that maybe his current assignment has soften him up some.

Anyway, great analysis on your part. I did not see all these elements you stated, initially.

    • Wow, my IQ just went up ten pionts reading your post.
      But……. I still think it’s a set up.

    • Hi Doctor Bob:

I agreed that your analysis is very insightful. It definitely has some merit.

I thought some of the things you mentioned, but could not see it as clearly as you obviously did here. These reasons, I believe, will be accurate reasons why Casey temporarily leaves the team.

      • Use logic…..this scenario only works if Adam Baldwin were
leaving the show, which he isn’t. Therefore after story arch
plays out he’ll return to Team B.

  8. While his personal issues may play a role in his decision, this is a man that needs to be part of the action and was willing to give up the girl he supposedly loved in order to gain a place on a more elite team. I believe that he could very well have professional reason to be tempted by her offer.
It isn’t simply that Casey’s cover has been tending bar. The comment is indicative of his changing role on missions and on the team. Casey has been relegated more and more to being the agent stuck in the van, working surveillance while Chuck and Sarah are in the field. It wouldn’t surprise me if he feels underused and superfluous now that Chuck has become a full agent.
Such feelings might be especially keen given that last week he not only was assigned to the van, but while Chuck planned his commando drop to save Sarah, Casey was given the job of being the lookout (even if he did end up capturing Gaez). Then he got taken out by the CIA equivalent of the Powerpuff girl Bubbles.
Also, leaving Team B does not necessarily mean leaving L.A. Both of his potential teammates worked in L.A. and the Buymore is now a full NSA/CIA substation that could support more than one team.

  9. Riiiiight. Break up Team Bartowski? Not if they want a 5th season they won’t.

  10. Will Sarah and Chuck have to save Casey and the A-team or vica versa???

  11. Too bad they chose Robin Givens, she makes Nicole Richie’s acting seem like Katherine Hepburn.
