REPORT: Chuck One of the Most Buzzed About Fall Series

Last week I received an email from the PR team for Banyon Branch, “a leading full-service social media agency,” with the Cliff’s Notes findings of a study they did tracking social media buzz in August to indicate excitement about the Fall 2011 TV season. The first thing that caught my eye is that the top three most buzzed about shows online are Chuck, Supernatural and Fringe. Awesome, right? So why didn’t I post this a week ago?

Go Team Bartowski!

See, I’m online a lot. Like, a LOT, and I can’t say that I’m aware of those shows receiving more buzz than shows like Castle or The Vampire Diaries. So I requested information about the research methodology – which social media did they track? was it weighted? how did they determine “buzz”? what were the fluctuations from week to week of the study? what events impacted buzz rankings? – but have yet to hear back. (Hey, the email said they’d be happy to answer any questions, so I asked them!) Meanwhile, other outlets have started posting the report.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love for Chuck to be going into its fifth season with a ton of positive buzz behind it. That would be the ideal climate for the show to return in, and you know we’re out there buzzing for all we’re worth! I just wanted to see some details to backup the validity of the report before I shared it with y’all.

But, now it’s out there, so let’s assume the report is valid and celebrate that Chuck is generating buzz! In fact, based on this research, Friday night may not be the Timeslot of Death after all. The top three most buzzed about shows will air on Fridays this season, so either all the buzz is about the timeslot wars, or people really do watch TV on Fridays.

  1. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a back order of episodes for S5. Of course I wouldn’t mind if they decided to make S6 their final season either.

  2. Great News ! let’s hope the good buzz combined with the new shows failing miserably will translate in an episode extension for Chuck

  3. it should be the show with the most buzz considering it is the greatest show ever thought of

  4. This is good news. Hopefully Chuck will get the same result as Fringe: it wasn’t doing well on Wednesdays or whatever day it was on and the fans said move it to Fridays. What was the result? It only became the most watched show on Fridays and now holds it’s own. I’ve been tracking the ratings of NBC’s new shows, especially the ones that aired on Monday (Sing Off and Playboy Club and i know the Sing Off isn’t new, but it’s a newer show) to see how well they would do and oh man, the results are ugly. I’m pretty sure Chuck’s season 3 and 4 premieres did significantly better. The Sing off got a 1.9 at 8pm and then a 1.8 at 8:30. The Playboy Club got only a 1.7. And those ratings are for the premieres. Ouch. And since Monday, NBC hasn’t had anything do much better and some have done worse (hello Free Agents and Harry’s Law). Since these are premieres, the ratings are probably going to only drop. Based on this, NBC might have to bring back Chuck earlier. And, if the Friday time slot helps Chuck’s ratings like it should, they may even have to give Chuck more episodes.

  5. If you get a reply from Banyan Branch, I’m interested in hearing what they wrote back.
