RATINGS: World Series Puts the Smackdown on Chuck Premiere

Well, at least we can only go up from here! The Chuck season 5 premiere opened to some pretty terrible ratings numbers, drawing a 1.0 in the 18-49 demo with approximately 3.4 million viewers tuning in for the new Friday night timeslot. Up against Game 7 of the World Series, Chuck was pretty much guaranteed low viewership. Still happy about moving the premiere back a week, NBC?

Once DVR numbers come in, an increasingly important factor in ratings per several studies and network comments, we’ll have a better idea of how many people really watched the episode. In the meantime, knowing that this is the final season, at least we don’t have to stress over these numbers as much as we used to. (Before you ask: no, a cable network is not going to “save” Chuck; they aren’t doing that sort of thing anymore. Also, no, NBC won’t cancel the show before all 13 episodes air.)

Updated: NBC is rerunning last night’s Chuck and Grimm tonight beginning at 8/7c to pick up viewers who might have been occupied with something “booooring” last night.

  1. Writers don’t care What fans say.
Fans want hot scene between chuck and sarah. But they are like brother and sister.
Even Chuck and Ellie have more emotional capacity!!!!
I think ratings will go down…

  2. Are you kidding?! Last night’s episode was great! I can’t believe ratings are so low… 🙁

  3. It was like watching superman with chunk of Krytonite hanging around his neck…
    Please Re–intersect Chuck..
    Please De–intersect Morgan.

    • And yet, Chuck saved the day in spectacular fashion WITHOUT the Intersect.

      • Although I’m not a big fan of Morgan and his Zooming. . .(did NBC pick up some Mazda advertising for putting that in there?) I can see where the writers are going with the final (cry) season of Chuck. With the end of last season they did put an imphases on the fact that Chuck is a smart dude and he doesn’t have to have the Intersect to do great things. I can see this season being one of the best! (even though it’s only set for 13 episodes). So it will probably take a few episodes for me to get used to the fact that Morgan is the new Poster Child for Friendly Fire.

  4. Of course chuck got low ratings because its friday night, everybody came home from work or school and went out to party or to have fun because its friday lol. Chuck should be aired on monday, tuesday, wednesday or thursday.

  5. Wasn’t the best episode of Chuck last night. Not gonna lie, BUT it was good. And yes Chuck and Sarah do need a bit of a spark back in their relationship, but this is showing how their love is on an emotional level not just a physical level of attraction. Hope rating are better tonight and will be tuning in 🙂 plus i didn’t get to watch “The Grimm” last night and I guess I will give it a shot.

  6. I was so VERY happy to finally have Chuck and gang back.. I am sure the ratings were low due to the baseball game and, once again, not much promotion for the series opener of Chuck. I saw plenty of promos for Grimm though. I also think that a lot of people weren’t aware that Chuck had moved to Friday nights (except for us die hard fans) and that this was the first episode of the season. I have quite a few family members that love this show, but don’t keep up with all the changes that tv executives make. I tried to inform as many as I could. And many people probably thought Chuck was off the air, since it is not on Monday nights anymore and the new season hadn’t started until now….way to go NBC.

  7. Oh and are we sure that they won’t pull Chuck for having too low of ratings?

  8. Bad ratings, yes… but not surprising. Not when it went against, among other things, the 1st Game 7 of a World Series since 2002 with a Cinderella Cardinals story for the ages and a Texas Rangers team seeking to clinch its first-ever championship title. Truth is, I am surprised Chuck did this well in the ratings. Just be glad a number like this didn’t land on the deck when Chuck’s fate was still being decided last year.

IMHO, ratings don’t matter at all anymore except as a curiosity and perhaps as an area of concern if the ratings, say, drop to 0.3 or lower (doubtful). That might… maybe… cause NBC to reconsider airing all 13 episodes in a scheduled Friday time slot, perhaps holding back the episodes to run in some kind of marathon burn-off block of Chuck shows somewhere in the holiday schedule, but I doubt even that would happen since Fridays are sinkholes for ratings these days.

I’m going to just ignore the ratings from this point forward since there is no real purpose for them now. Every story has a final chapter and Chuck has arrived at its own. The ratings are what they are and, unless Chuck starts outdrawing NCIS and American Idol, it’s going off into the sunset this season.

Enjoy the ride, Chuck fans, and start planning a great farewell party for the Buy More Brigade.

  9. i thought it was such a great episode! i loved seeing the gang all back together again and being in new scenarios. i felt like it wasn’t even happening because it was so great. that an actual new episode of chuck was airing. it was the best feeling ever. im watching it for the third time right now. i love this show!!

  10. So..can someone tell me if the premier episode is worth watching? I, unfortunately, was so turned off by them putting an intersect in to Morgan’s head, that I just couldnt bring myself to watch the premier last night. I only tuned in for Grimm. Ive been a loyal Chuck viewer through its first 4 seasons but usually, only a little Morgan goes a long way for me and with him as the intersect, well, as I already said, I tuned out. Tell me if its actually worth watching and I might come back.

  11. So much fun! Glad my favourite show is back.

And, yes, Mel, considering the circumstances, the “baseball is boring” scene takes on a whole new meaning! 😉

Bring on the Casey romance arc!

p.s. Mark Hamill is so short! He was so tall in 1977. 😉

  12. I think this episode was really good, I think it showed all of us how Chuck is really feeling about not having the intersect. It also showed us how much he wants to make Sarah very happy by getting her, her dream home and it also showed us how Sarah can get anything out for Chuck. But it also showed us that he can be really smart and brave. As long as Decker keeps getting in their way, its going to be hard for them. All I know is, I really want to know why is Chuck so important to them and why they want him to fail. Can’t wait for next weeks episode.

  13. To me it felt like a whole new show, while at the same time harkening back to early Season 1. The episode was a little slow but I really enjoyed it. If Chuck does get The Intersect back, I hope its not until like, the last second of the series finale. I want to see Chuck show the world that any nerd can be a hero, without the help of his computer =)

  14. one question. chuck drew 1.0 grimm drew 2.1 against the same baseball game right? that in itself seems to go against the argument that the game affected chuck. the viewers were there, they chose not to tune in. i think it’s time the fans finally accepted the fact the show lost viewers because of itself and not outside forces.

i rated the episode a 5 out of ten, nothing to write home about.

  15. Didn’t love the ep, but it had its moments. C/S do need to regain some spark and stop kissing like they’re brother & sister. Nothing gross, but something that shows that maybe they are newlyweds and actually enjoy kissing each other. But I know you mentioned that ep 3 is a good episode, so I look forward to that. But what disappointing is that for as low as Chuck’s ratings, Grimm’s fared much better. Guessing it’s because it’s a new show, so we’ll see what happens next week.

Thanks Mel for the updates as always.

    • I thought their smooching at the end, in front of the house with the red door (that’s the Chuck writers’ office, FYI), was sparky. Maybe because we weren’t in their faces during the kiss, it didn’t feel like it to other viewers? And anyone who’s been kissed in the spot Sarah kissed Chuck, well, it’s obvious from the look in HIS face that he wasn’t feeling particularly platonic about it!

  16. Really bummed to see those numbers, I mean yeah the World Series is one thing but still. I do put some blame on NBC because at least where I am (Chicago), I didn’t really see Chuck Season 5 advertised that much. I’m just going to spread the word, Chuck is a great show.

    • Yeah, the lack of advertising for the season premiere certainly didn’t help. We’ll see what kind of numbers tonight’s rerun add to the total.

  17. This was the worst season-opening episode ever, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good eighter. For starters, where’s the romantic synergy between our freshly married couple ? The Villain was spot on the first scene ”You two look like a old married couple”. Second thing was Morgan having the intersect and bein able to use it without any hardships at hand, it cost Chuck YEARS to come close to what morgan is able to do now and besides him having the intersect takes the spotlight off the maincharacter being Chuck (Pretty strange don’t you think ?). I hope the comming episodes will be beter, eventhough I will watch till the end I hope to see some show highlights this season.

    • Don’t worry, Henk. The new and improved Intersect may have been easier for Morgan to get control over in the 5 months since he got it, but Chuck is still the only one who can use it successfully over the long term.

    • I think we already saw how the Intersect was affected Morgan negatively. He was almost flashing without him having control over it. I also think the problem with this new Intersect will be that it will change Morgan’s personality. There were some signs of that in the episode if you were looking for them.

  18. Do they combine today and yesterday’s ratings together? And if the ratings are better tonight, is there a thought about moving it to Saturday? I mean, I have no life, so it won’t matter to me, so wherever they put Chuck, I’m there.

  19. they better not cancel it during its last season. idiots(NBC)

  20. I personally loved last nights episode! Was it the best of the series? No, but the first episode of a season is never the best for any show, it takes a while for everyone to gel again after the break. I think the maturity of Chuck and Sarah’s relationship is great (especially for the last season), and seeing Chuck learning to stand on his own two feet without the intersect is both hilarious and inspiring. Morgan is just as funny with the intersect as he was without it, and his friendship with Chuck is still terrific. My only hope now is that NBC will order the back 9 episodes! I want a full 100 episodes of Chuck!!!

  21. For me most of this episode felt too much like the opening episode of season three when Chuck was an unsure mess. Thankfully things looked better at the end when Chuck’s plan came together. Hopefully things will only improve from here. A confident Chuck, regardless of having the Intersect or not, is the Chuck we all want to see.

  22. Chuck is great and it’s great to have them back again! Bring on the CIA, the bad guys and the search for the perfect house!

  23. Well I don’t think the ratings will improve for tonight (Sat) because Chuck and Grimm are not on the NBC schedule here in the Seattle area. There is a movie slated to start at 8pm instead.

  24. @Lianne, no they dont combine and the chances that Chuck would have higher ratings on a Saturday night is next to impossible. Saturday is even more of a place where shows go die than Fridays. The only thing most people are willing to watch on Saturday nights is College Football and Cops.

  25. “who might have been occupied with something “booooring” last night.”

That was me I was one of the ones occupied with something “boooring:”. I watched the premiere of Chuck, and in my mind it was the worst episode since Mask.

  26. The Saturday repeat only got a .3. Well, NBC will not repeat it anymore. That’s the second lowest rated scripted show on NBC ever. First was a .2 for “Kings” on July 4th.

    • Ouch. I thought I was joking about what I said regarding a 0.3 earlier. If that is correct, then even combining them gives a 1.3, which is terrible. Good thing Chuck no longer needs to worry much about that anymore. Still, I agree, with a cellar-dweller number that all but requires a shovel to find it, yea, I doubt Chuck will be seeing many more Saturday Night encores. I guess if anyone misses the Friday episode, there’s Hulu for catch-up.

    • Like I said earlier……..the shows were not re-aired here Saturday in the Pacific Northwest. I have a feeling that there were quite a few areas that did not run the shows again on Sat. Therefore the really low ratings for Sat.

  27. Such a great show on such a crappy network. I know its been said on and on and debated, but had Chuck been on another network, it would have certainly faired better. All you had was Conan and Chuck NBC, and Brian Williams, you lost one, are losing another, but still have B Willi.

  28. Chuck’s fate is set. Ratings don’t really matter anymore.

I thought the episode was pretty good. Still not sure about the Morgansect. We’ll see how it turns out. Apparently, just not a lot of us.

  29. 2 things I didn’t like about season 5 episode 1..

    1) Morgan as intersect…He looks funny doing all those stuffs that chuck should be doing… If this continues the show will become Morgan and not Chuck and viewers will decline after every episode
    2) Yvonne with short hair…It really doesn’t suit her…She looks so gorgeous in long hair especially in last season she looked the best.

  30. Don’t zoom too soon Morgan. . .Think about Baseball. Perfect! Especially since the premier went up against the WS.

  31. Not the best premiere episode they’ve every done, but it wasn’t bad. Most of the blame has to fall on NBC for the ratings. They push the premiere back a week (why again?) so it lands on Halloween weekend when most of the country has parties and things to do. I know my family, who lives for Chuck episodes, was too busy to watch it until Sunday night. Then they don’t pull it when game 7 of the World Series lands on top of it. Every other network pulled new episodes for the night. Plus, I never once saw more than 2-3 15 second promos for Chuck in the weeks leading up to the show.

At least this will kill any talk of NBC giving Chuck a last minute extension and ruining the plan for the finale.

  32. My God! Those ratings are terrible but not surprising. I hope the ratings go back up so that NBC airs the other eps.

  33. Hi guys

first episode was good but chuck must be the intersect we are used to see him this way and his nerdherd guys should keep up the humor.
we chuck fans should use facebook ,twitter and all media possible to spread chuck tv show to help get higher audience

  34. I loved the 5th season and I am feeling really sad that this will be the last…It would be great to see more emotions between chuck and sarah…passion does not die after marriage or does it?
