Chuck vs the Plan B - Part 4 of 4

Charlene slowly left her desk and located a customer that needed assistance.

The social engineering skills that allowed her time and time again to bypass security areas and to convince people to reveal their passwords had a knack for extracting customers' true purchasing intentions.
She used it in her sales introduction to the mother and her two children.

As her monologue directed the purchase towards the minivan entertainment system, she spotted her observer: Fernando.

If there was anyone on her team that she could replace in an instant it would be him.
She didn't care who his parents were; some candidates just didn't have what it took to be spies.  Unfortunately, his parents had connections.

Connections that allowed him to graduate from spy school.
Connections that got him on this mission right after graduation.
Connections that kept him on this team despite her numerous reports on his conduct.

She actually gave "Fernando" a chance at the beginning.  After all, every agent starts with a first mission, learning from mistakes along the way.

His chance lasted for far too long after he and Michael were "hired" at the Buy More.

Charlene couldn't bring herself to think of "Fernando" as an agent any longer - he was unpredictable, unfocused, and along with his inability to take the job seriously, he seemed to fancy himself as the next James Bond.

She wondered how his perpetually rosy cheeks would fare against the winters in Ventspils.
She shook her head.
If "Fernando" was like any movie character, his behavior was increasingly more like Bluto from Animal House.  She had guessed he somehow even had his "Fernando" cover name selected from a movie - it certainly didn't seem to suit him.

Agent 'Obvious' was violating protocol.  The team members were not to appear aware of one another, and his goofy expression connected with his blatant staring at her was a prime example of what an agent was not supposed to do.
She had barely been able to put up with his behavior during the Buy More 'Save Lester' fundraiser - he was the reason she had requested a tranquilizer gun.

Nevertheless, her back-up plan if anyone had ever noticed his current error, was to simply use his stare to label him her stalker.  If she was lucky, getting him fired from the Buy More might also get him reassigned to another team.

She glanced down at her sales register.  There were only 14 more minutes to her shift.  Chuck and Sarah had not yet returned from their mission.  She looked at her phone once again for confirmation on the primary team's status.

Allowing a few minutes to pass, she slowly glanced in Fernando's direction.  He was playing video games.  She gritted her teeth.  This lack of job responsibility shouldn't have been able to pass even if this were a real job.

"Plan B" . "Babysitting", she mumbled under her breath.

The clock eventually made its way to 17:30.  Michael was punctual as usual and was already heading towards the front door.
She took the long way out through the employee break room to grab her jacket before exiting the store.

She looked around and climbed into the Nerd Herder Matrix #4.

Michael drove the 15 minutes it took to arrive outside her apartment.  She tapped the navigation screen.  General Beckman's likeness replaced the map.

Neither Charlene nor Agent Fairman had anything of interest to report - no suspicious in-store activity, no foreign surveillance devices, and Analyst Bartowski was safe or under agent supervision - simply a typical day.

Beckman appeared unusually disappointed.

"I want you and Agent Fairman to start having lunch, separately, at locations that have a clear view of both the Buy More and the Orange Orange.  It can be at the deli, the S'barro, anywhere - the Orange Orange remains off limits.  I want the two of you to report on anyone that follows or interacts with Agent Walker.  Am I clear?"

"Yes ma'am" they answered in union.

The navigation screen went dark, and the rest of the vehicle with it.

"Agent Fairman", Charlene said turning with a nervous smile, "it is almost 18:00, would you care to join me for some dinner?"
Michael with his continued poker face declined.
She exited the car, covered her reaction with a fake smile, and wished him "ar labu nakti" before he drove away.

Fernando sat at a Buy More computer playing a video game resembling Second Life.  He wore his goofy smile proudly.
He nearly giggled at the ridiculously large Gothic font he chose for his ninja-clad avatar.
Another gamer's character ran up to his.

"The Pawn of the Play is Paralyzed!" he typed in all of its oversized Gothic glory.

The other avatar turned around and ran away.

Thanks, since the first season I had noticed that there were three almost anonymous characters that had at least one or two in the background; sometimes showing up more often than cast regulars.  For some reason despite being placed front & center or interacting with main characters, they never have any spoken lines.  Surely their presence was intentional? ;)

Fernando, as listed on IMDB, was the only one of the three I could find a name for.
The Michael name I got after almost missing Morgan address him in a first season episode.
I'd love to know if the Charlene character actually has a name, I could never quite read her name tag.  It looked in a few shots like it appeared just a little bit longer than Morgan's name, so I borrowed the first name from my obsolete Charlene Carmichael idea.

Last bits:  Thanks again for the feedback, it was fun but certainly more challenging than I expected.
I may stick to reading rather than writing, so if anyone wants to use anything from here, have at it.
