I know there are many letters that come to your desk. Here’s the point. My wife and I are not reached by many advertisers. We despise Crime Dramas, we think the lowball sex joke comedy of every Sitcom on television is beneath anything that the general public should tolerate. What passes for journalism in the news magazines is disappointing. You’ve got one chance to reach people who want to have fun with a show that does not fit neatly into these cookie cutter categories, Chuck.
Please pardon my review of the current state of Prime Time Television, but being in our 50s we expected television to evolve differently. We hoped to have a broader range of programming and it has become narrower. It would not be hard to take an episode of Law and Order, hand it to CSI Whatever and use the same script. Take the same jokes from The Office, use them on any 6 other sitcoms. In my mind, Chuck represents something that is not clearly defined. From what I am reading, the ratings are not as you would expect them to be. I don’t know how sophisticated the analysis is, but I’m guessing that Chuck’s viewers consist of many more people like us, and if your advertisers want to reach us, they have very few choices. I would consider doing some more deliberate audience research before you cancel Chuck. (We did put Chuck in our Neilson diary for the last week of March).
