Chuck.

And we’re back for more Friday fun with Chuck! Recently I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the music of Chuck (I’m making a new CD for my long holiday drives). The soundtrack is a pretty big part of this show. Sometimes the songs are simply there in the background, helping to guide the mood of a scene while promoting some new single or band. But there are a few songs that stand out from the pack.

And in honor of our recent relationship-heavy episodes, let’s talk “Chuck and Sarah” songs. These songs, playing over some of our couple’s most memorable scenes, have a special place on most people’s Chuck soundtracks. So when you’ve finished reading this, please add your own choices down in the comments section. But remember we’re narrowing this list down to the Chuck and Sarah songs for now. We’ll get to all the other awesome music of Chuck at a later date, because I’m dying to go there too.

Top 5 Chuck & Sarah Songs

Here we go, from the bottom up.

5. “Backwards Walk” – Chuck versus the Pink Slip

Okay, so this is probably not a popular moment in Chuck lore. But please go to the forums if you want to argue about Chuck’s decision not to leave with Sarah (and lets all remember that this was a year ago). However you feel about the scene over which this song played, you can probably admit that the song itself was perfect in the moment. A truly sad song about a man walking away from the girl that he loves? It doesn’t get more fitting than that.

4. “No One’s Gonna Love You” – Chuck versus the Nemesis

I admit it, I’m totally out of touch when it comes to music. So thank you Josh Schwartz for bringing Band of Horses to my attention. This is a really beautiful song and it plays over a fairly important scene. Did anyone really think that Sarah would choose to leave with Bryce? Probably not, but it was still hard to watch Chuck wonder, especially when this song made everybody’s true feelings all the more clear.

3. “Creature Fear” –Chuck versus the Colonel

So, by the time they played this song, Chuck and Sarah were this close to getting together both emotionally and physically. The writers had spent two years building to that moment in the old motel room. And it was a big one, even if it got cut short. This song, with it’s deceptively quiet build up, was terrific for that and I loved that they brought it back at the end of the episode for the sweet, yet comparably simple scene when Chuck, now a normal guy, takes Sarah to the rehearsal dinner.

2. “Feeling Good” – Chuck versus the Honeymooners

I’m already anticipating a backlash in the comments as many would probably list this as their top song (and we’ll get to my top choice momentarily). But let’s take a moment to talk about why this song provokes such a strong reaction. It comes at the end of an amusing episode that finally allowed Chuck and Sarah to enjoy one another’s company as a real couple. And because of the sheer energy of this ep, I think most of us were expecting some bouncy triumphant song to play us out to the credits. Instead they went against our expectations and gave us something sexy yet relatively gentle. This song perfectly matched the scene of Chuck and Sarah relaxing on the bed, happily together after a long, hard day. And the fact that our resident badass Sarah will now count this soulful song as a favorite, only makes it that much easier to love.

1.“Down River” – Chuck versus the American Hero

So why did this one make my top spot? Allow me to explain myself. It was a tight race between this and “Feeling Good.” What pushed it over the top for me is that this song is on every Chuck playlist I have, at home, at work, in my car. It’s just an awesome song. Plus it came at the end of a long, long period of Chuck & Sarah emotional angst. The fans had spent the better part of 12 episodes watching these two get pulled away from each other. And as much as Honeymooners had earned its quiet ending, American Hero needed something big and fun. Tell me you weren’t cheering when Sarah decided to leave with Chuck and that chorus of “Go don’t stop…” came on.

So that’s my list of Chuck & Sarah songs. Which of their songs do you count as favorites and why?
