Pollapalooza!: How International Fans Can Raise The Flag For Chuck

As an international fan of NBC’s Chuck, I’m generally at a loss when it comes to helping support the show. Does it matter whether I watch live through my local carrier of CityTV or two hours earlier via the NBC affiliate WGRZ in Buffalo?* Does Subway Canada care that I eat their products in the name of a television show that runs advertising through the American arm of its company? Are the folks at NBC aware that, no matter how much I may want to, I can’t access episodes via their site because of intellectual property laws that prohibit my (legal) access to their video streams or those of sites like Hulu? Are people who are not only not in Nielsen households but not in Canadian Nielsen households counted?

Well, I have discovered one way to be counted. And counted. And counted. And counted.

The Online Poll.

Chuck fans, stand up and be counted by voting in online polls!
Stand up and be counted!

The first one I participated in was E! Online’s Girl on Top poll, which was won by the lovely and talented Yvonne Strahovski. It was a fun diversion but I was still of the opinion that online polls were mildly amusing at best but didn’t really mean anything in the overall scheme of getting Chuck a fourth season.

The next was the TV’s Top Couples on the same site with the winners this time being Sarah Walker and Chuck Bartowski. While madly clicking, I still figured it was something to keep me occupied but hardly qualified in the same league as buying multiple Subway products or convincing a few hundred other people to start watching Chuck on a regular basis.

But the third big poll has changed my point of view. That, of course, was the recent Save One Show poll, again hosted by “Watch With Kristin”. This one, it seemed, had the potential to make a difference, and for the first time, as an international fan, I felt that I was doing my bit to sway the powers that be at NBC into giving the go-ahead for a fourth season of Chuck.

But what made this poll different? Well, E! Online promised to support the poll’s winner by mentioning it in their television shows’ broadcasts and presenting the results to the producing network. And the showrunners thought it was a factor that could only help, enough that all the shows competing in the final round submitted their reactions to being in the final six.

And the fans also submitted comments, over 5,000 of them.

So what did the fans have to say, besides voting with their mouse? There was the usual cheerleading for a favorite show and threats of mortal expiration in the event that said show is not renewed. There was also the normal amount of name-calling and impolite remarks among some fans of competing shows.

But this time, something was missing. Now, I didn’t scan through all the comments attached to this poll. There were just too many. But I have in the past with other polls, and what seemed to be absent this time around were comments to the effect that the person was confused about why anyone would vote for a show they had never heard of. The “Chuck? I’ve never seen it,” and “Who’s watching that show? Nobody I know.”

So in addition to perhaps getting Chuck a hearing at the executive level at NBC, poll activity has succeeded in making the show more generally known at the grassroots level. Since people don’t tend to watch a show they’ve never heard of before, this can only be a good thing. And even if someone is hostile because the Chuck fandom seems to contain a large proportion of poll addicts (like me) who are willing to spend a lot of time casting vote after vote after vote, who’s to say their curiosity won’t be piqued at some point?

Chuck fans can make a difference by voting in online polls.
Numbers don't lie!

After all, stranger things have happened. The fandom managed to get a third season in part by buying a whole bunch of Subway sandwiches, so…

So as an international fan, I’m encouraged. Because there are a lot of us out there all eligible to participate in on-line polls. Chuck currently airs in 68 countries outside of the U.S. It stands to reason that this has generated some number of fans; in fact, visitors to ChuckTV.net hail from 170 different countries (don’t ask how that works). And in a quote from USA Today’s Gary Levin, apparently non-U.S. markets do have some degree of impact on whether a show sees renewal:

In the past, fan campaigns for shows such as Chuck have deluged the networks with symbolic trinkets to persuade them to renew on-the-fence series. The Save Our Shows poll also is used as a gauge of support that’s not always reflected in ratings.

But renewal decisions more frequently depend on other factors: profitability, potential for growth, sales to foreign markets and quality of replacement series.

And speaking of USA Today, their Save Our Shows poll is still open. So visit and be heard. This one also collects demographic data and was won last year by – you guessed it – Chuck!

So rally ’round the BuyMoria flag, wherever you live, cast your votes, eat your Footlongs and watch Chuck live. Vive le Chuck!

*CityTV is currently airing Chuck at 10:00 p.m., which is too late for little me on a work night.

  1. Oh my, besides the fact that I’m from Portugal and you from Canada, I feel exactly the same, voted in the same polls, asked the same questions. I don’t know exactly how television works inside but I do think they should pay us more attention, us, the internacional fans. Cause, and as you quoted from USA Today’s Gary Levin, nowadays, with the globalisation and the internet, there is no reason for shows beeing so closed. I mean, they do are watched all over “68 countries” in the case of Chuck. We can buy too,- a lot of the brands that i’ve seen from chuck commercials are also in my country with the exaclty same products – we can promoto too, we actualy (and that’s a personal experience as i’ve seen in foruns and websites) are way more “dedicated” when is about spreading the word of chuck trough the internet, i guess is because we, the international fans, feel all so desperate for not being able to take a bigger part as we wish and would to.
Once again, i totally agree with you, these polls are really important! But i can’t help this thinking that i have that i could be doing a lot more if they let us. Little examples of my frustration: why can’t NBC let us watch the online episode? Why can’t amazon let us buy the dvd’s (as for example pre-order the season 3 now as you all from USA and Canada must do!), etc etc etc…why? 🙁

    • YAY, a portuguese fellow!!!

I’m afraid I’m not so positive of all those pools’ influence on NBC’s decision. I read some of those posts, verkisto, on the pools. On, I believe, “Girl on Top”, our victory was tainted with proof that some Chuck fans had used some kind of Internet program (damn, what’s the name??) to win – Seriously, who does that and then boast about it?? Jerks!

Later, yes, we did won “Couples” and “Save one Show” fair and square, but everyone knows that, for example, our 50 thousand votes don’t mean 50,000 thousand viwers, but only a few thousands who vote night and day. And although such loyalty should be considered, it still doensn’t mean a lot to advertisers – their target is still too small for them.

I’m not saying voting is futile. I mean, it certainly won’t wrongly sway NBC’s final decision. But it’s not what Chuck needs the most :s Being a non-American sucks, sometimes x)

      VOTE FOR CHUCK!!!

      • I doubt too that there’s an enormous impact from online polls or being a fervent international fan, but I’m happy to discover that there is ANY IMPACT WHATSOEVER! And I was getting the same impression from comments of other international fans who support the show in spirit if not in statistics that are presented to advertisers. That’s why I got so excited when I saw the quote from Gary Levin. And if E! Online and Kristin Dos Santos are making the effort to make a thing out of it, I’m behind them all the way. Baby steps. 😉

      • Vote for CHUCK in the USA TODAY Save Our Shows Poll. Go to http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2010-04-13-sos14_N.htm

    • Hi! Yes, you’re right! I feel the same way because i’m from Portugal too and there is nothing that we can do to help.. only to vote on the online polls..

      tadeu

hey mel, having fun with the portuguese people?
        :))

      • (Before everything I just want to apologise myself for going to write in portuguese, I hope you don’t get this in a wrong way..its just we, the portuguese, don’t have a website for chuck, yet, so this is the only way we have to organise and talk. Once again, sorry*)

Eu podia ajudar a recolher informação doutros sites.

        http://vitaminachuck.blogspot.com/

we, the portuguese, have now a blog about Chuck, finally! 😀 http://vitaminachuck.blogspot.com/

      • how can you apologise in english before typing in portuguese ? may chuck carry on for ever
p.s brazil vs england final with england to win, sadly portugal go out in 2nd round 😉

  2. Here’s another poll going on right now, so please vote in this one as well. CHUCK has made it into the ‘Elite Eight’ of favorite tv shows:

    http://tv.insidepulse.com/2010/04/19/inside-pulse-tv-madness-elite-8-round-voting-begins-with-top-seeds-lost-the-office-chuck-and-24-facing-off-against-each-other

  3. VOTER CHUCK !!!

  4. I’m from Canada too and if I were to go at Subway and say I’m here for chuck, I’m sure they wouldn’t have a clue of what I would be talking about.

Just to be on the safe side and well because I enjoy it, I watch both runs of Chucks on Monday (8h00EST on NBC and 10h00EST on Citytv) just so both, NBC and Citytv gets their ping from me to show that I want both of them to carry the show.

It’s still intrigues me how NBC thinks. Chuck has raiting of anything between 5 and 7-8 millions viewers and shows like Smallville on Fox who gets 3.5 millions viewers an average (if the information I read is correct) gets renewed withouta problem.

Chuck is also the most popular show on NBC so why not just renew it and cancel other shows that don’t draw as many. I’d be curious to know how Heroes did this season compared to Chuck. It was pretty bad and has been going downhill ever since Season 2.

    • Well, we did get a change in advertising here, although it hasn’t been directly attributed to “Chuck” advertising. Originally our Foolong was $5.65 or something, which doesn’t have the same catchy ring as “Five Dollar Footlong”. Sometime in the midst of Season 2, they changed the slogan here and, happily the price! So there must have been some cross-border fallout (the happy kind). 😉

      • hi there!
because this article, because we found so many portuguese fans, me and inês decide it create one blog to talk about chuck, in portuguese!
it´s not “premature”, but we have now a place for talk about our devotion to “chuck” and it´s your “fault” 🙂
        great!!

  5. Does anyone know if DVD-sales outside the US have any impact on NBC decision?

    • Not directly because Warner Bros. receives the money from DVD sales as well as iTunes/Amazon sales. However, by putting more in WB’s pocket, they might be in a better position to offer NBC lower licensing fees.

  6. Hi im diovi and im a chuckaholic (chorus reply: hi diovi!).

Im from the philippines and chuck is shown here a week late from its US airing.Although i doubt philippine ratings help i still make it a point that i watch chuck on our local channels.Just in case it does help.

There are a lot of things i try to do for chuck:

-eat subway sandwiches when i can

-watch chuck on nbc/hulu (using a vpn server that changes my ip to a US ip..I know its bad..But you do things for chuck)

-bought orig chuck dvd’s(piracy is really rampant in our country)

    -vote religiously in polls

-spreading the word abt chuck using SNS like twitter,fb

-hosting chuckathons for friends/family to recruit new chuckaholics

i dunno if this helps but its my way of showing how much i love chuck!

    • I’m a fan from the Philippines as well!

Recently, my two other Chuckaholic friends and I got together at Subway to talk Chuck! We were protesting that Meatball Marinara wasn’t available locally, but that’s okay.

I’m off to vote on that USA Today poll!

And if you’re reading this, NBC, PLEASE RENEW CHUCK!

      • Hey yvaine r u on twitter?
Theres a whole lot of filipino chuck fans there and someone’s actually planning on having a chuck tweetup…It would be great if we filipino fans could get together and get organized..

      • Dude, Filipino as well!

        Just you know, representing.

      • Chuck FTW! I just wish we could watch Chuck on NBC.com. We have no choice but to download episodes on the internet just to be up to date.. 🙁

Watch Chuck on SolarTV 8PM Saturdays.

      • Pinoys of the world unite… 😛

      • Cool! I’m from the Philippines too! Didn’t know there were so many fans here. I totally freaked out when I saw Chuck posters around Fort Bonifacio (it’s for solar tv)

I think there’s a good chance we might get a 4th season. Is there a possibility that NBC is just holding off the shows renewal announcement cause they want the fans to campaign again? Cause that’s fine by me 🙂

      • well, technically, I’m a Filipino-American (moved to the states when I was young kid)….but I still have love for the motherland….

    • This is awesome! I’m Filipino as well. We should set up a Chuck tweet!

    • Hey, With regards to the piracy comment, That seems to be the case over here in the UK. However the show does air significatly later in the UK. Im guessing there is a reason they dont do this but couldnt they syncronize the air dates of all episodes internationaly, im confident this would dramaticly increase the number of people who watched the show live and lower the ammount of illegal downloads.

  7. I don’t get chuck is hit on virgin in the uk but not mean people know about over here uk as well . I want to help save chuck but how Its not even on air here Yet. Compared rubbish that’s on tv in uk chuck is to me up there with best like friends . How can I make chuck come for a fourth season

  8. I m from belgium and i love the tv show chuck. Can’t wait to see morgan as a spy. But i can’t watch full episodes on nbc or hulu. So how can non americans support chuck?

  9. For those from western europe we only can get season one in december 2010. BTW if Zach should come to belgium we have subway also here.

  10. hi there!
i´m from portugal too, and my love for “chuck” made me by for the first time the dvd´s from the show.
    i never did that before!
i love so many, but, never felt the “necessity” to have around my house, but “chuck” change everything.
yes, the pool´s is the best solution for me to feel part of the family, to “help” somehow to get a 4th season for “chuck”.
but like everything good in the world, always hard to understand why a good show suffer with those kind of things. quality should be recognize without blink!
those chuktv.net count for ratings? :0)
i´m here everyday and is great to read things about the show and also know that is space for talk about how we feel.
    congrats and thanks, always! 🙂

  11. I’m from Brazil and I totally agree with this post. If I lived in U.S, no one could even talk to me on Monday’s nights of so excitement. International Fans, make ourselves heard…I don’t really get why Chuck isn’t a success, can’t stand knowing that while Chuck is in the bubble there are eighteen C.S.I franchises wandering around. Enough procedurals and more captivating stories like Chuck, don’t you agree?

  12. I am accepting international followers to @CHUCK_Wagon on Twitter.com. The first week in May I will send my follower list to NBC if we can get enough followers to make a difference.. Get on folks…http://www.twitter.com/CHUCK_Wagon

  13. Hi everyone! I’m from Argentina and i tottaly agree with everybody. I’ve been voting for Chuck in every poll i see, because i too feel that’s the only way I can Collaborate. So, lets keep the good work!!!! Rgds..

  14. Hey OC. Nice post! You really have the world talking about Chuck. Even here in the states my main push is just Chuck-ucation – educating people about how great Chuck is.

    • Hehe, MSB, that is a subject that should be taught on schools around the world.

“Welcome to Chuck 101. As the first class, let’s have a small surprise test to evaluate your knowledge about this show. Only one question, don’t worry.

“1) Describe Sarah Walker’s hotness in less than 5,000 words.

      “Good luck.”

I try to do the same thing. Most of my friends have all heard abou Chuck, since I’m constantly advertising it, my screensaver in my laptop is about Chuck and I put on my FB profile a couple of Chuck urls and other information.

Still, I don’t actually have american friends, so my impact, if any, can only be seen on the pools. Like OC said, Baby Steps.

      KGP

    • Thanks, MSB! And Hi, Kath. I see we have a little ff dot net corner happening here. It’s another international-type place for fans of Chuck.

      • Yeah, FF guys are also around here. And other places.

Sadly, that kinda proves my point: We may have a lot of blogs and stuff promoting and defending Chuck, but it’s still the same persons that participate in all of them 🙁

      • But more of the lurkers are coming out! And good to meet each and every one!

  15. Wow I completely agree with all of you! Is so nice to hear that I’m not the only one feeling like this! I’m from Argentina too(like you Sole), the only thing I’m doing is voting and tweeting, but I really want to watch the show online through nbc and I can’t which is really frustrating! Let’s continue spreading the nerd like we are and do are best = )

  16. Chuck fans from thailand….love this show very much.

  17. I’m from Romania and I’m clearly a Chuckaholic. Unfortunately there’s not much that I can do to help the renewal, except for voting day and night on all the poles. I voted on the link shown upper, and Chuck has 94% versus The Office with 6%… And that I think says something, right? I also bought a t-shirt from NBC store with Chuck, maybe that helps, at least a little bit. The show is amazing, it just MUST come back for a 4th season!!! Go Chucksters!!!

    • i’m from Romania too 😀
it would be a shame if Chuck won’t be renewed for a fourth season…
      i mean it’s such a great show…and that’s an understatement!
anyways there are six more episodes to go and we have to enjoy every second left of Chuck season 3…

  18. http://tv.insidepulse.com/2010/04/16/inside-pulse-tv-madness-sweet-16-round-voting-about-to-end-with/

just realized, I can’t spam my way to victory, it needs individual voters.

    Come on!

    • Man! Pitting Chuck against Castle, my two favourite shows! I voted for Chuck, of course.

      • The competition is past the Sweet Sixteen–CHUCK beat out Castle, it’s now down to the Elite Eight round(CHUCK vs The Office). Can’t hurt to vote in these polls too:

        http://tv.insidepulse.com/2010/04/20/inside-pulse-tv-madness-bracket-tournament-elite-8-round-voting-continue-with-friday-night-lights-house-burn-notice-and-big-bang-theory-facing-off-against-each-other/

  19. Hi, I’m from Luxembourg and I’m also voting for Chuck in all the polls I find. I love “Chuck” and there must be a season 4. Even if all the fans outside the states can’t watch “Chuck” live we’re gonna do everything we can to save our favorite show!!!!! NBC have to listen to all the Chucksters!!! WE WANT CHUCK BACK FOR SEASON 4!!!

LET’S SAVE BUY MORIA!!!!! VOTE FOR CHUCK ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!!

  20. I’m from the uk and i buy a subway twice a week and buy the DVDs not really much more we can do =/. I also did that save our show and got shown live on american news =/.

  21. You guys can help us win here too
    http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2010-04-13-sos14_N.htm

  22. Hi, I’m from Hungary.
I also do everything I can to have our well deserved 4th season.
I even watch the show online, at 2 a.m. on Tuesdays.

  23. from canada, Saved Chuck!!!

  24. Hi I’m from Connecticut. We have Subway here and I eat there many times. I hope there are other fans from my land but I never meet any. Sorry for my English.

  25. Thanks for the post. I’m now a huge fan of Chuck, but I had never heard of it until I saw the online clamor for Chuck to be renewed. Since it seemed to have an immense amount of respect and love from so many different people (including my international twitter friends!), I decided to watch the pilot, and I was hooked from there. I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of or watched the show before, or that it was in danger of being canceled. There really is a good amount for international AND American fans to do, especially on the Internet, to spread the word about Chuck and introduce one more friend to the show.

  26. Oops, just to clarify- I was talking about all the talk online a year ago for Chuck to be renewed.

  27. I’m a Chuck fan from Israel, looking forward towards a season 4.

    • I got to say that is strange name for an Israeli isn’t it? Well, Hagai is a pretty common first name, but Jacobson?

  28. Guess what, I’m from Peru and I love Chuck. I support the show via online polls and buying both seassons in Blu-ray.

¡VIVA EL MEJOR SHOW, VIVA CHUCK!

  29. Wow this is great! So many countries being represented from these comments.

Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Israel Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Philippines, and Thailand!! Way to represent Chuck fans! Keep it up! Bring on Season 4!

  30. WOOT canada! But yeah I really wana support this sick show! Chucuking keep it up fans!

  31. For my fellow Canucks, if you want to be counted by watching online and do so without having to get around geoblocking, you can watch the most recent new episode on CityTV’s website.

    http://video.citytv.com/video/show/chuck/allmedia/4294966609/

  32. Being from Australia I really relate to what you are saying.. although it dosen’t air on free tv down here. so the only way i get to watch Chuck is by buying the dvds and online. Wish everyon down in Australia knew how fantastic it is.

  33. HEY! I’m so happy I’m not the only one from the beautiful Argentina! :D!!!! well… I have a work mate who watch Chuck too 😛

  34. im from ireland and ive done all those polls and i got season 1 and 2 for xmas, the show is my favourite thing in the whole wide world i dont know wat id do without it, does anyone know how i can help support the show more?????

    • You’re already doing a lot, kayln, and that’s terrific. Talk to your friends (I assume you do already, probably until they tell you to be quiet, right?) Arrange a Chuck party for yourself and your friends where you can all get together and watch the Pilot episode from your DVDs. Make sure they all know where to find the ChuckTV website. And keep the Buy-Moria flag flying proudly in Ireland! 😉

      • thanks!!! and your definately right about the talking till im told to zip it haha XD im loving season 3 and i cant wait till it airs over here, im having to watch it on the internet cause we dont have NBC, it airs here every tuesday mornin round 2am and i stay up just to watch it!!! XD
