PREVIEW: Episode 3.05, “Chuck vs. First Class”

Tonight NBC takes a trip back in time, airing the season 3 episode “Chuck vs. the First Class”. Why? We have no idea, but it was a fun episode. Featuring the debuts of guest stars Kristin Kreuk and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, this is Chuck’s first solo mission:

CIA agent Daniel Shaw (guest star Brandon Routh) assigns Chuck to his first solo mission in Paris, ignoring Sarah and Casey’s wishes. During the flight to France, Chuck befriends Hannah (guest star Kristin Kreuk) and flashes on another passenger – the imposing Hugo Panzer (guest star “Stone Cold” Steve Austin). Meanwhile, Casey helps Morgan battle Jeff and Lester for control of the Buy More.

“Chuck vs. First Class” airs tonight at 8/7c on NBC. In the meantime, why not join We Give A Chuck and their postcard campaign? This week’s advertisers to write to are Subway and Nintendo. Addresses are posted here.

  1. IMO, perhaps one of the worst episodes of the series. Even worse than Mask, IMO. Not only because the storyline was one of the most silly of the series. Why would The Ring spend so much effort transporting the key to something that they didn’t have?

If, like me, you watch the show because you identify with the title character, this was the first episode where you truly started to dislike him.

Not only did he ignore Sarah’s vulnerable pleading with him not to go on this dangerous mission at this time, he rubbed her face in it, gloating that he was going. Then he comes back with a new girl.

Hard to root for that guy.

Why TPTB would want to remind us of that dark point in time is beyond me. If it’s to pimp KK, that seems silly.

    • cmon it was a funny ep and the ring didnt want the cia to have access to that intel

      • Yeah, I honestly don’t understand the criticism of this particular episode, while not one of their bests, it’s far from the worst. Fake Name, Cat Squad, Cubic Z, Imported Salami (am I he only one who despised Lou?) and Broken Heart are all worse in my opinion.

      • I too, enjoyed this episode. Chuck was so cute and funny….loved his girlish scream. =0))) I forgot how long his hair was then (compared to this season’s hairstyle) kind of miss it.
I thought Brandon Routh’s ‘Shaw’ was a good character in the beginning episodes. He was a take charge guy and didn’t put up with crap from anyone. Too bad they couldn’t have had him stay true to that character instead of having him getting involved with Sarah…..that is when season 3 went downhill….in my opinion.

  2. Peculiar choice. I could have stood to see “Other Guy” or “Honeymooners” a second time, or even “Role Models”. Oh well, I’ve got them on DVD so I can see s.3 whenever. It would have been better to rerun something from this season since it’s not out on DVD. Howsabout “Phase Three”. Can’t get enough of the Giant Blonde She-Male.

  3. happy to see Kristin Kreuk again. best thing about this episode was her.

    • I think Nacho Sampler was a much better Hannah episode. That scene at the bar with Team Bartowski and Manoosh was just hillarious.

Also Morgan setting up his “office” with French movie posters and Swan Lake playing in the background to impress Hannah was so good.

Just remember Yogurt time is the most important meal of the day.

  4. I Can’t understand the crazy people from NBC. Why this episode??????

  5. How am I supposed to watch this when Hannah and He Who Must Not Be Named represent a month long heart break for me? Stone Cold Steve Austin on the other hand, Awesome!

  6. Why this crappy episode? Sadly, I suspect because we’re going to get stuck with Hannah or Shaw or both again, dammit.

  7. I have to agree with many of the comments above. This episode was the start of a downward trent in the show that didn’t recover until later (around Chuck v. the American Hero in my opinion). Why NBC would choose this particular episode is beyond me when there are so many better ones to show…

  8. You guys know you don’t have to watch this episode if you don’t want to, right? Makes no difference in the ratings (repeats aren’t counted), so cue up another episode instead.

    • Can you still watch episodes on NBC.com? Would watching an episode there be a better option if people don’t want to see this one? Maybe that would make a point to NBC that a lot of fans would prefer to watch a different episode. I’m not from the US so don’t know how that works but I believe NBC take note of online viewing.

      • Good strategy, I think. Worth a try, anyway.

But it’s not the episode that’s important to a renewal, it’s the advertisers. So put your TV on, ignore it, and watch an episode of your choice via your computer from the NBC site. How’s that? 😀

    • I would get a certain amount of satisfaction from the ratings though if they were better than the ratings for their President’s special last week.

While this episode was not the greatest, for me it still had its moments.

  9. I do not feel like anything about this episode is fun–It leads up to the Mask which I despised and did start a downward trend. The Shaw character was a tremendous blunder that continues to hurt the viewership. Kristin’s abilities were wasted–she would have been a better villain or someone from Sarah’s past. Someone still does not have their finger on the pulse of the viewers.

  10. Great episode, can’t wait!!

  11. Why are people being so cynical about this episode? Get a grip of yourselves and stop picking such pedantic holes in this episode.

    • Thank you. I rather enjoyed the a-plot (Y’know, before the novelty of Shaw ware off) , tho the b-plot I have issues with.

  12. i believe this episode is being aired bc steve austin has a new show that premires tonight i think

  13. I know ratings don’t matter but I can’t stop watching Chuck. Plus my Wife likes this episode. We both think this isn’t the last of Shaw and Hannah, why else so them again?

    • I believe Kristin is in an upcoming show on NBC – a cop show of some sort.

By the way, watched this episode, while not a favourite it still has some pretty funny moments in it.
      I loved Lester’s pajamas.

Also it was worth watching just to see the promo for next week’s episode.
Family Volkoff looks like a great episode.

  14. I broke down and watched this episode and although it is not a favorite it is not nearly as bad as the Mask. Pedanic–Is that a word you use everyday, if so it was unimaginative to use it here–have a chuckle on me.

    • Pedantic every now and again, pedanic no. Believe me I’m not the only one having a chuckle…

What is ironic about the acclaim towards this episode, was that it was fairly well received judging by the comments on the chuck.net forum as well as most of the reviews at the time…
