NBC announced part of their 2009-2010 schedule this morning, but did not include news about Chuck.
Additional series pickups will be announced May 19, when NBC announces its 2009-2010 schedule.
On the plus side, Ausiello upgraded his take on Chuck‘s chances at a third season to “Safe bet”. Keep sending in those letters to NBC, Chuck fans!
Someone on the inside in the TV business, Please tell me what this means. As we all know, the campaign has been in full swing for close to a month. I want to wear my nerd herd shirt in peace
What this means is that we have one more chance to ask for a FULL SEASON!!! They are pretty much planning on renewing Chuck for a midseason, which will once again kill off all the show’s momentum. That would be nine months without Chuck.
I think we need to be asking for a full season!
I really like the idea of going to the today show with save chuck banners!
I wouldn’t be half as bummed were it not for Nikki and her “breaking (non)news (with no source). So I’ve decided to direct my anger at her (rather than NBC).
Irresponsible reporting.
Gathered overnight, though:
from tvweek_vlada: If Chuck does get renewed, they should incorporate conflicting, misleading renewal rumors as a torture device in the plot.
Kay Lhota: “Chuck vs the NBC Renewal” has most other TV dramas tame by comparison!
Me: You’ll gasp at the (annoying) twists and turns!
(I’m lost for adjectives)
Just to be clear, I don’t know if they are really going to renew at all….the rumour is just that it would be a midseason pick up….again throwing off the continuity of the show, IMHO.
No mention of CHUCK. Thanks, NBC, for screwing with us! Renew Southland and Parks and Wreck (whose ratings are the same or worse as CHUCK and whose fans haven’t shown near the loyalty as we CHUCK fans), and either (1) make us wait for a decision that’s already been made (so what’s the point of delaying it?), or (2) have already canceled CHUCK and be “too afraid†to announce it. Thanks, either way. You treat your loyal viewers so well. NOT!
Has anyone else read the descriptions of the “awesome slate of new series” listed in that link? It’s all re-hashed pablum; not a bit of it sounds remotely interesting to me. If as previous posters are guessing the NBC execs are planning on using Chuck as a mid-season replacement for any of these turkeys once they inevitably crash and burn what does that say? That a proven commodity isn’t worth as much as a roll of the dice featuring some no-talent smartass from the E! network. Great.
ARgh!!! They are teasing us!!! Yes NBC, we love and watch you, just tell us Chuck is SAFE!!!
Damn you.
I knew this was going to happen!.
I am not sure how i feel about a mid season pickup(12-13 episodes),but if it means keeping chuck on the air, then so be it!.
My goodness the other shows they did announce are absolute tripe.I don’t want more crappy pilot’s either , i want my chuck!.
I read an online interview a while back where NBC CEO and President Jeff Zucker said that margin is every bit as important as ratings. This goes along with information about how GE is demanding that NBC costs down and produce higher profits. It sounds like NBC and WB need more time to work out a mutually beneficial deal. NBC is becoming a cost is more important than content network. This is the only way that Leno got five nights and is what is driving the rest of their programming.
If anything I think they’re not telling us either way because they are enjoying the benefits of indirect advertising. Every hit to NBC’s site is money from ad views, and everyone’s footlong purchases make Subway more likely to advertise with another show (if not Chuck)…
Actually the wording from an NBC manager about the ‘bubble shows’ made it sound like chuck and earl and law and order would pretty much be filler material that they might keep or might not. Really dissappointed over that. I had hoped by now that they would at least acknowledge Chuck as more than just another bubble show.
Eonwe: One more thought on the new show ‘descriptions’ and what the executives said about the new line-up: All the descriptions sounded to me VERY SUSPICIOUSLY like they were trying to describe the appeal of Chuck. All the stuff, from the family friendly romance to uplifting shows that make you laugh yet cry, blah blah blah…..it all sounds like they want to imitate Chuck’s appeal yet dump Chuck at the same time…In other words they are leeching off of the whole Chuck sensation in the most lame way possible.
WTH? Do they really think they can just capture the essence of Chuck and then copy it into random hospital drama and cliche shows?
I think Chuck is over if they wanted it we would know it to day just look at what they picked up. Southland! If Chuck is over then I will watch another network. Has anyine watch Heroes… It is falling fast and the only thing stopping it from going lower was the season ended.
This is just pure sadness. It is so disappointing that NBC would not answer this overwhelming call from the fans! We are who matter!!! Save Chuck!!!
Oh well, while I was hoping to have the matter settled today, I really didn’t expect it since I know from experience (altough not on tv business) how this “Let’s make a deal” negotiations can drag on forever in details… What I WASN’T expecting is 3 more weeks of wait for something that at this point seems so expected considering the leaks.
If they need that extra time to negociate with WB, I at least hope that NBC is studying the posibility of renewing Chuck for a bigger-that-13 season, even tough I really am not expecting it that much.
And then you look at NBC’s new pickups for the season and just by reading the description you know most of that stuff doesn’t have wings to fly. Medical dramas? Don’t you see the market is full of that already? Parenthood doesn’t seem all that appealing and will only survive in an unchallenged time slot and Day One, while beeing the only one I might take a look at, it’s just an event series so it’s 13 episodes and bye bye. Considering this and the ongoing “Heroes” viwership bleed, and the Leno “are you kidding?” Show, I wouldn’t be suprised if NBC would order a plus 9 Chuck episodes when everything else goes Kaboom.
Oh geezzz, NBC. What a *boring* slate of shows. If they don’t renew Chuck, I guess the only NBC show I will be watching is Medium. I’m dropping watching Heroes next year as the poor writing character flip flops are giving me whiplash. The *only* NBC show I really care about is Chuck. It is actually my favorite show on TV. The only show I watch on ABC is Lost. If Chuck goes, CBS and FOX get 99.999% of my TV viewing hours. I have written letters for Chuck, eaten footlongs as my only allowed weekly treat as I am diabetic. I have bought DVD and Blu rays of Chuck. Honestly..But I could care less about more medical dramas. Boring…. At least Chuck is original, charming, and cleverly wriiten which is why I love it. It’s a pity that NBC doesn’t seem to realize what a jewel that have.
My bet ‘Chuck’ gets renewed and placed on Sunday night after Football season.
Chuck should go to the CW if NBC doesn’t renew. It is Warner Bros right?
If there is no Chuck there is nothing to watch on NBC besides 30 Rock and I don’t watch that because it is on during Supernatural.
What the f***? This is the only good show on TV. Does anyone know why it wasn’t picked up for a third season? What a bunch of stupid lame asses at NBC. I guess they needed more room for “reality shows”.
@Nick — I agree. I don’t think I’ve heard that talked about. Why wouldn’t the CW air Chuck is NBC gives it the ax?
This is what gets me… Other than the fact that I would like a full third season and the idea of waiting another two weeks to find out is completely frustrating. The shows that they have in the line up are all pretty much the same kind of shows. A trauma show, a hospital show, they picked up Southland–a cop show, they picked up SVU (which I love, no true complaints about this one)… It just feels like a lot of heavy drama and a copule of the shows feel as if they all are going to blend into one another. I mean couldn’t you have some kind of combo platter with Southland, whatever the trauma sow is and Mercy (the hospital show). Boring. I would like something light-hearted in the mix please–and no offense to anyone out there, but the humor on The Office and 30 Rock isn’t really for me. I want silly, but smart. Clever, but quirky. Is that really so much to ask?
Truthfully, I think the decision to put Jay Leno on FIVE nights a week was a huge mistake. I takes five hours out of programming and I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as successful as they think it’s going to be. I think people are going to get bored with it pretty fast. I am not planning on boycotting NBC, but I’m not sure that any of the new shows that they are offering to us present me with anything new or different, nothing that I am compelled to watch.
Bummer.
I guess I knew better than to get my hopes up for today’s announcement on NBC’s 2009-10 lineup and I’m unsettled now. I’m not convinced that CHUCK is as beloved by NBC as much as the articles say–it seems if that were the case, it would already be renewed and they’d work out the details as they go along. Anyway, I’ve written letters by hand to the network, mailed my Subway receipts, bought some CHUCK gear at NBC.com, and sent a few e-mails to NBC as well. I’ve never gotten involved in any ‘save a show’ campaign before, but I felt so strongly about CHUCK that I wanted to do something to help. I guess its a waiting game now. Wish someone knew something definitive about it–I’m tired of all the rumors. I just want to see it in print that CHUCK is positively renewed for a 3rd season.
Thank you for keeping all us loyal fans in the loop with the latest news.
@BMack
Don’t count on it. If we get that far (and I’m not counting on it), there’s only a very little chance of WB moving Chuck for the CW, and even then you’d probably have a very different show because budget cuts would have to be made, actors and writers would have to be fired, etc etc.
Chuck is no Heroes or Lost in terms of production costs, but it sure is more expensive than Gossip Girl so the costs of producing Chuck vs. the income WB would get from advertisement (even considering product placement) make that move likely impossible to be profitable.
I hope we get a full 20+ episode season rather than one with just 13.
CW has always been rumoured to be interested in the show due to their relationship with Josh Schwartz and Gossip Girl….the thing is that NBC IS HOGGING THE RIGHTS TO CHUCK UNTIL MAY 19th which is normally past the cut-off for new shows to get picked up.
NBC is essentially killing Chuck for the competition by waiting so long, with no gaurentees that NBC is even interested in the show.
It would be nice to get a full season renewal. But at least going by the rumors doing the rounds,we are going to be lucky to get 12-13 episodes.
I hope i am wrong,i am just not feeling all that confident today!!
I am disappointed at NBC’s lack of information. Surfing I decided to go to WB’s website to see on the off chance if they said anything. (http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/television/index.jsp?fromtout=home_menu_tv_item0#) and on their front page it says that Chuck – New Episodes this Fall. It may or may not mean anything (I can hope) but they do produce the show.
Here’s Hoping
Not giving a definitive renewal today makes it harder for advertisers- it shows a lack of confidence. However, the show had very positive and happy advertisers this past season and perhaps there is confidence that they will return. There are still holes in the schedule and I’m guessing this delay has to do with the pure # of episodes and when it will be aired. I think they are stopping short of placing it in fall (for a potential full season) unless some advertisers step up to bat. Otherwise there will be plenty of holes after the Olympics for a 13 episode run (hence my confidence that it will be renewed). Despite my desire for a full season- that scenario may be our best hope for anything past season 3. I can see NBC pimping out Chuck and Day One during the Olympics. Both are shows they believe in but lack viewership – the Olympics could prove a healthy platform for both. Plus- can you see the Chuck ads- the Buy More crew’s comments while watching doubles luge… ahahahaha
Chuck is the best show they have (I love the Office and 30 Rock, and Community looks to be a hoot), they could really use the back half of the season to re-boot the show’s fanbase and make it into the star show that the network needs.
If we don’t get a fall season, I think this should be our angle/ plea to the network. Thanks for the 13 eps – but push them to promo the heck out of it. Saturday reruns leading up to the season should be a goal too. I don’t think NBC merely wants to make fans happy- they want revenue and we need to convince them how that can be possible with this show.
WHarris- That site is the old WB site. It’s from last year (sadly). We will just have to sit patiently while NBC hammers out exactly how they manage to get in all that programming this fall. I just hope that if Chuck is back it’s given some respect and faithful attempt by NBC to gain viewership.
It crossed my mind today that as a young girl, I used to look forward to each new fall TV season. I remember thinking in 1966, “Well, if NBC has to cancel ‘Hullaballoo,’ a situation comedy about a rock band named “The Monkees” looks like fun.” So, okay cut forward to 2009- we’ve got “Parenthood-The Next Incarnation.” Maybe this revamp will outlast the 1990 version that died by November. Personally, I live “Parenthood” every day. What will they show me that I don’t do? Any takers on bets if this will soar or sink faster than it did 19 years ago? “Trauma?” It looks exciting, but no thanks. In fact, Hospital shows have never really been my preference, so I doubt that I will be doing more than an occasional peek at any of these programs, like I did every year or 4 with “ER.” “Chuck” remains on the bubble. I should have known. I’m not giving up hope, but I am stupified again at television network corporate reasoning. Who knows? Maybe when one of these new/not so new shows bottoms out, NBC will still have enough time to fill in with “Chuck” for 22 straight episodes.
Katherine, FYI this Parenthood is a completely different version of the previous network attempt. Its much more of a drama. In fact it’s like Brothers and Sisters but with younger kids in the mix. Its pure bland “done-it-before” drama. The pilot script was a yawner. It does have Brian Grazer and Ron Howard behind it though and a pretty stellar cast. That will be enough to get attention, but unless it picks up very quickly form the pilot it won’t hold it. My prediction is canceled after initial 13 episode run. The only guaranteed sticking power in the bunch is Community. That is going to be one funny show that hits a lot of familiar buttons with the audience. I will be stunned if it’s not one of NBC major players by the end of ’09.
What can I add to the comments already made by the CHUCKIES above? This is so disappointing. However, as someone else said, keep viewing online and keep emailing and writing. Let’s try for 22 episodes!
Watch CHUCK vs. The Colonel online at 8 pm Monday!
Ok, need to breathe…. Ok. a little better now. But still slightly mad that we don’t have word on chuck yet from NBC. Arrg May 19th is going to take forever…. >.< But i’m still holding out hope that NBC picks it up for a full season. If not I don’t mind watching it on the CW as long is it is on tv and i think with it on CW it might do better. I remember another tv series, JAG, that aired on NBC but wasn’t doing too well after NBC canned it and CBS picked it up it was doing great. So if that does happen to chuck, which i really hope does not, I hope CW picks it up.
Still holding out hope… I’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates.
oh i am so sad!!!
sigh* SO SAD!!!!
What upsets me the most is that Every loyal Chuck fan is doing their hardest trying to get NBC to open their eyes and get Chuck renewed, not for a 12-13 episode filler season, which would end the series too prematurely, but for a full season. But just like any corporation who says they hear the “little” people, they really don’t give a rats a** about what we want. I mean putting Jay Leno on 5 nights a week is too dumb in my opinion. Their going to kill the guy after he had that hospital scare and got through it. As for heroes, I watched the first season but stopped after that when the writing just became too “ugh”. The only other shows I watch on NBC is law and order and Law and order: SVU. The only other shows I watch besides is Smallville on the CW. But Chuck is by far my favorite. If they bring Chuck back for a half season filler I’ll watch it bc I like Chuck and am a loyal fan, but if they don’t bring Chuck back at all then I will stop watching NBC all together. Which means no live tv for me pretty much. I work for a foundation rapair company which has me working early and extremely long hours every day and those shows help me to escape from the stresses of work when I get home. If Chuck doesn’t get renewed I don’t know what I’m going to do when I get home. PLEASE, PLEASE BRING CHUCK BACK!!!

ORION
i bought season 1 and am watching it every monday @ 7pm on the dot
Again, when there is something good on tv. They cancel it. I just love Chuck.
Izzo
According to Ben Silverman from NBC, here’s a peek at what you can expect from Chuck’s network this season:
“During Monday’s clambake, Silverman confirmed what the network’s schedule will probably look like. Monday: “Heroes†and another drama night. Tuesday: “The Biggest Loser†night. Wednesday: “Law & Order†franchise night. Thursday: Four-comedy night. Friday: Lower-expectation original programming night. Saturday: Rerun Theater. Sunday: Football.
(Kudos to TVbythenumbers.com for the report)
So what does this mean for Chuck? Ehhh not that much since it’s so cryptic. All you can do with this info is try an educated guess on where they could put Chuck in.
I’m guessing Chuck’s not the “another drama show” that goes with Heroes on Mondays so if Chuck returns it doesn’t look like we’ll see it in the same time slot of S2, and while that might seem good at first glance, I also don’t see any perfect fit for Chuck on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday…
And that leaves…
The Friday Wasteland… Seriously, who watches TV on Friday? I hope NBC doesn’t put Chuck on friday as it would be a huge slap in the face to all the campaigns made over this months. It’ll be hellish to get new people to watch the show even with all the buzz…
Damn you John “5 hours hog” Leno!! This would be simple as kindergarden math if you didn’t hog 5 hours a week of quality programing to flood the network with your so-called “comedy” I hope his show tanks like a rock in a lake for this stupid situation.
Hello I’m writting from Croatia,I am watching Chuck from the episode one and it’s awsome… You can’t finish Chuck like that, the last episode of season 2 was breathtaking & I can’t wait to see season 3. I really hope it will contiue,
Chuck’s greatest fan Goran!
They can´t do this!! People of NBC Please Chuck-us!!!
My family will gather and watch “Chuck” on Friday night if it lands there on the NBC Fall schedule. It isn’t the most convenient place, but it would be safer there than say, Sunday at 7:00 EST, where every week some sport or another will mess up the night schedule if they go into overtime. I just beg to NBC that “Chuck” will be on in the fall, with 22 episodes. I don’t know. I don’t blame Jay Leno for his prime time nightly series, but his program is going to have to be especially and consistantly brilliant. The truth is that I wish every new NBC show success, but I do want one hour a week on NBC to star Zachary Levi in a series called “Chuck.”
MIDSEASON? That’s a helluva way to REALLY kill a show. People will never know it’s on, and they’ll be into their other ‘viewing routines’ by that time.
I keep talking up the show to friends. To be honest, it only takes them one episode, then their hooked. My sister came from vacation and saw one epi with me and went back home and has been a loyal watcher since. Heck another friend bought Season 1 because my friend and I kept saying how great the show is.
Heroes has become god-awful. Yet they still keep it. The only worthwhile shows on MBC (for my household), are Chuck and Life. If both of those go, I’ll just skip Heroes all together as it really does nothing for me (aside from being on after Chuck).
Chuck is on tvnzondemand in new zealand would getting a whole lot of new zealand fans to watch an episode at the same time make a difference?
chuck is the greatest show since quantum leap
HI

I hope nbc finally realises whats really enjoyable for the family.
Roark.
ROARK
This is a great family show! Funny, Action, romance, well made…
Everyone that I show the 1st season episodes love it, and go hunting for the DVD. They are also surprised that there are no real advertisment for such a great show (the reason they didn’t know about it).
It didn’t help either that the 1st season was cut short, and there were no reruns. I hope that we get a full 3rd season and adequate promotion for this great show.
