Chuck Renewal Reactions & Updates

As news of Chuck‘s renewal spread, reactions, comments and questions started coming in droves. Here’s a round-up:

Reactions

  • From NBC.com’s Chuck page: Chuck lovers everywhere rallied around the show-and the efforts paid off. Thanks to your support, TV’s quirkiest gang of nerds and spies will return for a 3rd season on NBC.
  • Vik Sahay reacts to the news: “I am so moved and overwhelmed and grateful,” he said. “I kind of can’t believe it, but it looks like [fan support] made a huge impact. … I’m kind of speechless and blown away by it. And so appreciative and grateful.”(read more from Vik at Show Patrol)
  • Added 11:20AM CT: “Chuck” creator Josh Schwartz told TV MoJoe he’s more than cool with NBC’s scheduling.”We are happy to be back,” he e-mailed after the Times broke the ‘Chuck’ scheduling. “Ready to serve – whenever. Wherever. We have the best audience in the world and we will do everything we can to make this worth the wait.”
  • Added 1:00PM CT: Co-creator Chris Fedak on season 3:  I will say this: Season three will not be lacking in romance.” Fedak also gives the fan campaign props, particularly the Subway prong of attack. Read the full transcript on Alan Sepinwall’s blog.

Updates

  • NBC chief Ben Silverman is making it clear: Fan love for “Chuck” helped ensure the show’s survival for a third season. … In the case of “Chuck,” Silverman said, “Both the fans of the shows that matter and the advertisers of the shows raised their hands to say, ‘We need ‘Chuck on the schedule.’ We will send you Nerds. We will buy Subway $5 footlongs. We will do whatever it takes.” (TV Week)
  • NBC plans to premiere Chuck season 3 after the Olympics in 2010. Chuck will remain on Mondays at 8/7c.  It’s a long wait, but that gives us plenty of time to share Chuck with friends and family to boost ratings for the third season.
  • With Subway coming on board as a major sponsor (nice work, fans!), it’s rumored that Sarah’s cover for season three will be working at a Subway shop.
  • Added 11:15AM CT: Silverman says Chuck could air more than 13 episodes and keep going into the summer, possibly with Friday Night Lights.

  1. NBC plans to premiere Chuck season 3 after the Olympics in 2010. Chuck will remain on Mondays at 8/7c. It’s a long wait, but that gives us plenty of time to share Chuck with friends and family to boost ratings for the third season.

Ah the Olympics aren’t on until 2012,Explain

    • I am just glad it’s coming back. It’s been a while to have a comedy with a little action instead of all these goofy reality shows…..It will be programmed in to my DVR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Airing after the Olympics will be a huge plus for Chuck. The Olympics are typically NBC’s pot-of-gold in the ratings. They can push Chuck heavily during this time period.

Heck, maybe Zachary and Joshua can do olympic reports for either Jay Leno or Conan. These two are hysterical together and would make awesome commentators.

If they started in the Fall then the show would end and might be forgotten by the time renewals come around. This way Chuck can build off the Olympic ads and hopefully a Subway push straight up until next May’s renewal of Chuck. By making us fans wait they know they are building momentum because we won’t stop talking about Chuck. We will buy dvd box sets as Christmas presents. They know we will sitting on the edge of our seats in eager anticipation of this huge event!

We did it people! Our emails to Subway worked! Our support of their product worked! Now NBC is keeping Chuck in its familiar time slot (not a killer Friday slot) and giving it one of the best pushes it can. TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly will hopefully continue to support Chuck as well with stories at the time of relaunch. This is the best news ever. We just have to survive the wait. As Tom Petty said, ‘that’s the hardest part.’ But we can do it.

Chuck is coming back and that is beyond awesome. This press release is huge news. I don’t see any of NBC’s other shows getting this kind of special treatment or sponsor backing. Thanks to the fans…us…we let NBC know what a special show they have. We just have to deliver with new fans to watch when it returns. The Chuck recruitment drive is the next top priority. (As well as the continued support of Subway.)

    Chuck rules!!!!!!!!

  3. QUOTE: “Ah the Olympics aren’t on until 2012,Explain”

    Winter Olympics. Vancouver 2010.

With the show not starting till march,i am not so sure we will be getting those back nine episodes.
But at lease we are back!.

  4. I actually love the idea of having Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez doing Olympic reports for both Jay Leno and Conan.

Everyone knows how funny Zach and Josh are together in real life. Seeing them in a natural light on these popular talk shows would be a big boost for the show.

I’m going to write to Ben Silverman and let him know!

  5. If I understand this correctly, competing shows will be done or almost done when Chuck begins right? If so I think it will be very good for the rating. I like it.

  6. I’ve read two ideas I like. “Christmas with Chuck!”. Nothing but Chuck DVD sets for Christmas gifts this year. And let’s keep the feedback going to Subway on a regular basis. Any time you eat there, tell them thank you for supporting Chuck.

But whatever happens, do not support a move to Friday night – The kiss-of-death time-slot. Even Monday at 8 up against Big Bang Theory is better than nearly anything on Friday.

  7. The bit about the chance of more than 13 episodes going into the summer is an unexpected treat. Let’s hope 🙂

  8. Christmas with Chuck…Excellent!

I made my list months ago.

    Season 2 DVD
Buy More Polo(don’t care if they dont’ use it anymore…still has a place in my heart, and i’ll be wearing it to work.)

    sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!

  9. Just think only 40 more weeks until season three begins! Ugh. Hopefully Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak and the folks at Warner Brothers can periodically release some video clips from seasons one and two that didn’t make the final cut to keep the fan interest going while we all wait. Clearly despite the positive spin on having season three start after the Winter Olympics (February 12-28, 2010) it will take an Olympic-sized doze of fan creativity to keep the enthusiasm going.

  10. Does anybody know whether the rumored budget concessions (losing writers and possibly a cast member) are still required, or was the Subway deal the concession that was made?

  11. Hey, wait, I think I answered my own question (sorry about that) – via SeattlePI:

“Ben Silverman said in a Tuesday conference call, however, that Chuck’s cast will not be whittled down.”

    Great news!

  12. Waht about the budget cuttings? It was rumoured but it is true?

Seriously, I’m so happy that Chuck is back but if they cut in the characters or the writers, it can cloud my happiness a little…

  13. Despite the very long wait, it may be worth it. We have now what 9 months to heavily promote Chuck and bring many new fans into the fold. With the Season 2 dvd release that will give us more of an arsenol in attracting new fans. Also hopefully it will give the fans outside the US more of a chance to get caught up on the episodes as some have only been able to view season 1 episodes. Sarah possibly giving up the Orange Orange and working in a Subway?Interesting! Maybe Subway and NBC will create a new outfit for Sarah and then send the new outfit out through out the Subway Chain? Now wouldn’t that be a interesting multilayered marketing manuever?

  14. @Mel – you said in the last podcast that you would do a quick little podcast after the renewal annoucement. Is that still on schedule?

  15. @Mike B – Yes, Liz and I recorded a short podcast just a little while ago. Depending on Gray’s schedule, it should be posted sometime tomorrow. Thanks for asking. 🙂

  16. Wow, so many ideas and I need to read the blogs/interviews too. But so far i love the ideas. I’m thinking about getting my friends the DVD boxset for x-mas so they can catch up (some missed it due to work) and I love the idea of Zack and Joshua doing the commentary. I also agree that if it was to air before the Olympics it would lose spark and the NBC can air lots of promos for the show during that time.

  17. @Mel – Thanks I should have known you guys are on top of things. I really appreciate everything you, Liz and Gray have done to keep this awesome show alive.

  18. Not that I don’t love the look of the site you run, but I think a new design would get peoples’ interest. Something with more color!

  19. I’m so excited that ‘CHUCK’ has been renewed! And after reading Ben Silverman’s comments, I think that we all made a difference–with our letters, e-mails, Subway purchases, NBC.com purchases….I’ve never participated in any sort of campaign to save a tv show in my life, but I was more than happy to do so for this great show. I will be sending a thank you note to Mr. Silverman & Ms. Bromstad, and Mr. Schettini. For anyone else who would like to do the same I’m posting their addresses below:

  20. I saw this bit in an article on the LA Times website and couldn’t help but post it and say to everyone here “excellent work!” You guys and gals out there writing letters and buying sandwhiches saved my favorite show! And an especially big thanks to the people behind this website. Having this place and the podcasts as a rallying point was instrumental to the campaign’s success. You have my thanks.

    ———
During a conference call with reporters today, Ben Silverman, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, said the network opted to cancel “Earl” and “Medium” because neither the fans nor the advertisers had waged a campaign to save them the way viewers and the Subway restaurant chain did for “Chuck.”

  21. Brittany Powell

Ye. I am so happy Chuck is coming back. Is Sarah really going to work at a Subway for her cover? LOLZ

  22. I’m so excited about S3. I hope we’re able to get as many friends and family addicted between now and when S3 premieres so we can convince Ben to extend it to 22. That would be like getting another season immediately.

I was even more excited to hear that there won’t be cuts to the show. Losing any of the castmembers or the writing would have been devastating because one of the best parts about CHUCK is the amazing chemistry. The writing is the biggest part of that.

Anyways, it’s up to us now. And what a gift that is — to be able to turn others onto something that brings us so much joy 🙂

  23. If Chuck were to get 22 episodes next season, NBC would have make the additional order well before the first episode of season three even airs. Chuck will probably wrap up 13 episodes well in advance of March 2010 (Chuck wrapped 22 episodes by the first week of March of this season–granted they began production 2/3 month early).

So NBC would have to make their decision based solely on the quality —not the ratings. This can be a good sign because NBC ordered the back nine of season 2 before an episode even aired. Fingers crossed.

  24. An idea:

If, from now until the season 3 premiere, we in the chuck fan community watch through seasons 1 & 2 Mondays @ 8/7 central as we recruit/promote the show. People with 1) know what’s happened in the series so far and 2) be in the habit of watching Chuck on Mondays. Could also get Subway $5 Footlongs, etc.

    Just a thought.

  25. @ sheehy898… Winter Olimpics!!!

  26. Hooray!!!! Chuck will be back and not in the dreaded Friday time slot! I don’t mind the mid season start too much. That will give my family, and anyone else I coerce into watching, a chance to catch up on Season 2. My parents didn’t have a chance to watch it before my Dad’s computer with the DVR crashed. 🙁

  27. I’m happy about the renewal even though it’s only for 13 episodes at the moment, and the long wait will be exhausting.. can’t wait until s3 premiers. Also lets hold our fingers crossed for the back 9 order.

I hope that this doesn’t turn out to be another Jericho fiasco. I never watched Jericho, but I have read that fans of the show rallied for a 2nd season and got it and after that season was done airing so was the show.

Let’s hope we can keep the momentum growing and that Chuck stays alive for a loooooooooooooooooooong time.

  28. I like the “Christmas with CHUCK” idea. Hopefully by the end of the year, CHUCK Season 1 on DVD will be cheap enough such that I’ll be able to afford to buy 20 or so copies. I hate planning for gifts so this could actually work!

  29. I like the “Christmas with chuck” idea. just so i can afford it with out breaking my bank for the number of copies i will need to get for everyone i know, i am starting now getting season 1 and when season 2 comes out i will do the same. i like the idea about watching chusk season 1& 2 on mondays at 8/7c bc i already do that. but i will also be buying some jeffster shirts and buymore shirts as well. this is so great for all of us. i will be finding a countdown for chuck season 3 premier to put on my computer.

  30. Hooray for Chuck! I think we need to be thankful for season 3, but we need to continue supporting Subway by eating there and letting them know you’re eating there because of their Chuck support – either by email them from their website or leaving a comment card at the restaurant so they can continue to support Chuck in the future.

  31. I can’t think of “NO MORE CHUCK”. Pls, pls NBC and Subway (I will continue buying your sandwiches for the sake of Chuck) – don’t let CHUCK fade away.

  32. While there seem to be pros and cons, one silver lining is that I’ll have a few months where I can actually watch Big Bang Theory! 🙂 But waiting that long for Chuck? I hope we really can generate more interest, rather than losing all the less-devoted fans that will have migrated to something else on Monday night and not want to switch away from it mid-season to come back to Chuck. Now, whether there is a season 4 or not, all we need to do is convince someone to do a Chuck feature film. That will get new fans on board (as long as they do a good job with it and don’t ruin it).

I definitely would kill to see Zach and Josh doing Olympics commentary for Jay and Conan. That would rock! I will be writing some letters regarding that, as well.

  33. Oh, and btw, as a web designer by profession, I have to say that this is one of the cleanest, easiest-to-navigate, no-nonsense yet professional looking web sites I’ve seen in quite some time. I don’t mean to invalidate the person who said it could use more colors (I don’t think so, but that’s a matter of opinion). I just wanted to express my admiration for the design of the site and amazement at what people are accomplishing with WordPress these days. Kudos!

  34. “CHUCK renewed” is really a GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD NEWS for CHUCK fan’s around the globe. but waiting that long for S3 is kind a not awesome, but for those solid CHUCK fans out there it’s worth the wait. i have been thinking these days (which i don’t usually do:-)) and a “CHUCK VS THE BIG SCREEN” would be really nice while waiting for S3 to air, and will also generate more and more new fan’s to watch chuck and wait for S3… i know a lot of you people out there already had that idea in mind^^ just hope they do something about it. and the commentator idea would be great, putting a little humor to the Olympics would be awesome i think:-).

  35. LISTEN UP GUYS!!!

I know it got renewed, but there’s absolutely NO REASON to stop with the original campaigns. I think ALL of us who committed to heart donations should do it at least one more time. However this time we should say THANK YOU for having a heart. I think that since it was a civil and polite campaign it’s the only logical thing to follow up on. GET MOTIVATED and TELL ALL WHO TOOK PART!!!!

  36. I am very pleased with this! Awesome job guys! I would rather wait until 2010 to watch chuck on Mondays than watch it get forgotten on Fridays. This is awesome!!!! I am so excited to say the least!

  37. I from now on will be watching new episodes of Chuck with a 5 dollar footlong. Thanks NBC and Subway

  38. A couple people mentioned continuing to support Subway, which is great, but it would be nice if we could do it in an organized way. Going there often and giving Subway continued feedback is nice, but what if we did Monday night subs the first Monday of each month? Try to get a big influx of fans buying Subway on the night Chuck aired and will continue to air as a way of saying thanks to the big sponsor. Then, of course, sending in all the comment cards, e-mails, phone calls, etc. Just seems like a more natural way of making sure Subway knows why they’re getting a spike in people eating there each 1st Monday of the month. Keeps everyone excited about Chuck–fans and sponsor alike–while not being so taxing it wears people out. So yes, eat at Subway and thank them whenever you’re up for it, but maybe try to get people committed to definitely doing it on 1st Monday Chuck Days or something. Just a thought. I’m certainly no organizer, but if you are and you agree, maybe you could start something up.

And whoopee about the renewal. I had a feeling we’d be ok, because our campaign was so unique, but I’m still relieved. Go Chuck! Best show on tv at the moment (er, uh, will be the best, after the Olympics that is, lol.)

  39. Dear NBC and CHUCK fans everywhere,

Thank You for listening to the fans, critics and sponsors and bringing back CHUCK for a third (fourth, fifith) season. We appreciate your fiath in us, and will do our utmost to make CHUCK the numerical hit it always should have been.

Okay, waiting until after the Olympics is a long time, but since it is coming back on Monday nights and I am still going to unavailable – except by unacceptable DVR -(though Dollhouse on FOX was renewed in part to DVR numbers) I guess I can live with watching DVDs for a few months. But encore performeances of SouthLAnd while Chuck waits on the sidelines???? If it were possible, there are 6 million+ fans who would watch CHUCK 7 nights a week (okay, four nights a week).

I always wanted to be to be a weatherman. It was the only profession in which you could be wrong 75% or more of the time and be an expert. Maybe he didn’t consider being a TV programming executive – the pay is better and you get to wear a suit. I am greatful to NBC for renewing the BEST show on Network TV, and hope that they will help us in promoting the show by bringing CHUCK to USA network (teamed with BURN NOTICE on Thursday would be nice) or to the SCI FI (or should I say SyFy) channel as part of their Friday line-up with Stargate.

By the way (or chould I say Buy-Moria the way), Chuck is not a nerd, he is a product of his time and that is part of what resonates with the fans. The everyday man put in imposssible situations who gets by on technology, sis faith in himself and those he cares about, especially his family. Whether he is saving Ellie or Morgan, or being saved by Sarah Walker and John Casey… and be honest, we all want friends like that.

The Cast, Crew, Writers, and Directors have given us people we care about, and I guess there is nothing more than we can ask of them. We owe it to them to make sure the network people see the truth.

Not much else to add, other to to say my Heart Felt Thanks to the fans who supported CHUCK – the cast and crew for giving us people to care about – and to NBC for showing faith in the program.

By the way, Chucks’s watch is the Casio MTG-910DA (which I proudly wear)… maybe we can get Casio on the team with Subway…

MY THANKS TO ALL THE FANS

  40. I am so happy and thrilled about Chuck S3. I have noticed several people commenting on supporting Chuck through Subway patronage and I think thats a great idea. Maybe in order to support Chuck we need Subway to have a couple of special sandwiches that let them know that Chuck fans are coming thru !

  41. Hey, NBC Universal — How about running the first two seasons of Chuck this summer on USA Network on Fridays in the lineup with Monk and Psych? The three are a perfect match – comedy, drama, action, great characters. I love all three shows, and Monk and Psych fans could learn about Chuck.

Regarding the delay of Chuck until after the Olympics, I think it is a good idea. Then we get uninterrupted Chuck, rather than a long dry spell in the middle of the season. There will be less competition later too. In the meantime, I’ll rewatch the first two seasons. Besides, Chuck will be already in the can to drop in when some other show bombs.

Finally, about Sarah working at a Subway. Not likely, because they close up the Orange Orange on a moment’s notice when she has to go save the world. However, waving a Subway Footlong under Big Mike’s nose every week would get the point across.
