Chuck Me Mondays: “Chuck vs. the Wookie”

**Congrats to Sidney C, winner of this week’s giveaway!**

It’s week four of Chuck Me Mondays, and we have another giveaway for you at the end of this post! Often cited as one of the best season 1 episodes of Chuck, “Chuck vs. the Wookie” gives us a glimpse into Sarah’s past when her old pal Carina shows up looking for assistance on her latest mission. Poor Chuck, tasked to help two gorgeous women on a secret spy mission. Is he in over his head? Speaking of in over his head, the episode begins with a cozy couples’ game night at the Bartowski apartment (plus, you know, Morgan) as Chuck and Sarah’s cover relationship deepens. Here’s the official synopsis:

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND-Chuck (Zachary Levi) faces an unusual task, when Sarah’s (Yvonne Strahovski) hot colleague from the CIA shows up requesting help for a mission. Morgan (Joshua Gomez) tries to get Chuck to set him up with Sarah’s new friend. When Chuck finds out that a million dollar diamond hidden in a Malibu mansion is being used to help fund terrorists, he must help these two beautiful women steal it back. Chuck is finding out that Sarah’s job of living a double life, which she is all too good at, is really preventing him from getting to know who she really is.

Zachary Levi introduces the new Nerd HQ

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the possibility of Nerd HQ’s return. Well, …

  1. Or Chuck versus the hot Swedish girl that wants him badly. Will he resist? Or should it be, did he resist? I don’t remember if we see him leaving Corina apartment after she call him on Nerd herd after hours. Sarah first question should had been “what happen?” instead of “what did she said?” . Not quite a real girlfriend yet…

  2. Yet another great episode. Count how many different ways they describe the hairy guy. The writers deserve more credit for Chuck. Yes, the acting, directing, and editing are great, but the writers make the show.

  3. I’m still waiting for the interpetation of what Sarah and Carina said to each other.

  4. I believe it’s at the end of this episode that we learn what Sarah’s real middle name is–Lisa. Chuck says that the only thing he knows about her that’s real is that she doesn’t like black olives on her pizza.

  5. Chuck and Sarah are trailing in the polls.

Which TV couple has the best chemistry?

    40.4% Brennan & Booth, Bones
    27.6% Chuck & Sarah, Chuck
14.1% Chuck & Blair, Gossip Girl
6.3% Barney & Robin, How I Met Your Mother
11.6% Pam & Jim, The Office

    Vote early vote often

  6. Yes, please vote in the poll for best romantic couple!

Some of us have been voting around the clock just to keep up on this poll and we could really use the help!

If everybody tries to spend five to ten minutes on this poll tonight maybe we can close the gap!

  7. Fave part of this episode: When Sarah is rubbing all over Chuck during their double date and his voice cracks!

    Least fave part: Chuck’s hair!

  8. bethany actually

This is the episode where I sat up and really took notice of what a fantastic actress Yvonne Strahovski is. The scene at the end where she barely resists telling Chuck what her real middle name is kills me every time.

  9. bethany actually

Mike B, you can see the translation of Sarah & Carina’s conversation at IMDb’s Trivia page for this episode. Carina says in Swedish, “If I throw you the keys, will you drop them?” Sarah answers in Polish, “Only if you throw it like your mommy.”

  10. This is such a great episode. I love the part where Sarah says “My middle name is Lisa” and we know that Chuck hears her say it because it shows up on the back of the TRON poster in season 2.

  11. My favorite scene was when the family was playing the board game and Chuck finds out Peaches didn’t run away but was hit by a car. Oops way to go Organ

  12. @Keith Yeah, that scene was my favorite too, but mostly about the comparison between Bryce and Fett.

  13. Notice how Chuck is wearing the same clothes from the end of episode 3? Not unsure about Sarah but it’s a nice little coninuity nod.

  14. This is the first time we hear “it’s complicated” to descrice a relationship.

  15. Oh man chuck vs. the Wookie, what can i say,
    amazing episode!!
Chuck’s first ‘girl-on-gril’ fight and it wouldn’t be complete without a tubesock full of soap!!
Not to mention hilarous how when casey is handcuffed to the bed sarah has to stop for a minute so she can take a picture!!
I had been origionally started to watch chuck the week before but it was about now when i knew that i had been hooked!!
although it was the first of many ‘can i trust sarah’ episodes, but i can live with a little mistrust as long as i get to see a plate used as a weapon…
    ..twice.

  16. Yes, finally I have a monday night free to watch with the rest of you. Missed the last two events, although to keep in the spirit I either watched before leaving the house or after I got home.

I have my $9.00 foot long ( thanks to Canadian dollar and taxes) and I’m ready to go. In fact I might just watch the first 3 episodes on the dvd to start – just so it is all fresh in my mind. I still have about 4 hours before we begin.

By the way, regarding the poll for best romantic chemistry. What I’m doing is whenever I have the TV on, I open my laptop and spend the commercials voting repeatedly. I saw the gap closing before my eyes, but we still have a lot of work to do.

  17. Chuck and Sarah are still trailing however there numbers have gone up. Keep on voting people. Theres still a huge gap.

Which TV couple has the best chemistry?
    40.5% Brennan & Booth, Bones
    28.2% Chuck & Sarah, Chuck
13.8% Chuck & Blair, Gossip Girl
6.2% Barney & Robin, How I Met Your Mother
11.4% Pam & Jim, The Office

  18. Question. How the h*ll did Chuck hear that Sarah’s middle name is Lisa? I never noticed that he knew until Agent 86 here pointed it out that it was written on the back of Chuck’s tron poster. Though I have to admit I always a hunch that he heard her. Now I have proof. 🙂 But still, how did he hear her?

  19. Astronomy Snap and Bethany. (1) Yes, CHUCK’S “do” has GOT to go! He has the most god-awful hair of any TV character. He’s supposed to be a Nerd, but he’s really NOT a Nerd in the classic sense – so let’s ditch the “Nerd” hair cut and give him something that at least looks like he went to Great Clips and not had Morgan cut it. We had a very loooooooong thread running on Zachary Levi’s site a month or so ago and the consensus was that the hair HAD to change for the better in season 3. One Chuckaholic described it as a “chullet” (a “Chuck” mullet), another as looking like a helmet – as if he “put on” his hair and went to work. There are other times when it just looks nasty and pasted down. Zach Levi has nice hair. It’s time Chuck graduated from the 15 year old dorky nerd look to something a little more “normal” and adult-like.

    (2) And YES, YES, YES – Yvonne Strahovski is so incredibly awesome – AS AN ACTRESS! (not just in her physical appearance). She can show emotion so well with just a facial expression. There is so much to “Sarah,” and so much more that we don’t yet know. Some of my favorite “Chuck” scenes are when Chuck and Sarah are having “heart to hearts” and learning more about each other. I loved it when he explained Mother’s Day to her – and also the meaning of He and Morgan’s friendship. Those are really revealing and tender moments that help make the show so great. It’s action packed, funny, and has those kind of touching moments between the characters that really make you care about them. Let’s be honest, a lot more people watch shows like “Two and a Half Men,” but do they REALLY CARE about the characters?? NO!! That’s what makes CHUCK so much different and so much better than these other shows.

That’s one of the reasons why I think the writers HAVE to let Chuck and Sarah’s relationship develop in Season 3 – so we can find out more about her character and about Chuck’s, too. The fact that they both had kind of screwed up childhoods (to varying degrees) is such a draw that pulls them together. That needs to be further explored – and it can be – it the writers allow the relationship to develop. I think that’s one of the reasons we fans love those characters so much – we can sympathize with them and also identify with them. Life isn’t perfect – and their lives haven’t been. But now circumstances have brought them together. It’s meant to be!!

I like the idea that I’ve heard batted around that they try having a real relationship “undercover.” So their cover “fake relationship” would actually be covering for their “real” relationship which they keep undercover. Hmmm. Sounded great to me and opens up all kinds of possibilities for Season 3.

So, enjoy the episode tonight. Hope for better “Chuck hair” and for more “Chuck & Sarah relationship development and character exploration” in Season 3. (And sorry about being so “wordy.”) Rock on Chuckaholics!!!

  20. @ Rick Holy. WOW :0 U described the show perfectly.

  21. And as far as tonight’s episode. My absolutely all time favorite “visual” scene is the scene in the elevator after Casey escapes from the bedroom and has the handcuffs still attached to the piece of the headboard. The scene on the elevator with the mother and her little girl is a riot! The one camera shot where you see the little girl through the latticework of the headboard piece – that should win an award of some kind! And then the nervous mother holding tighter to her mother – and Casey – as much as Casey is able – showing his embarrasment. To put it simply, a very small scence, but completely and totally AWESOME!!

  22. Oops. I meant “nervous mother holding tighter to her little girl.” (That’s what happens when you try typing too much on a post)!!

  23. I just finished watching the first three episodes again to get warmed up
Its 7:59 and I’m ready to go.

  24. Just finished the episode. Love the girl on gilrl fights. Its’ a shame that Chuck learns about Brycee and Sara’s relationship the hardway from Karina, but she does brighten Chuck’s day when she says she wants Chuck because she likes to try to take away what Sara wants. Then adds that Sara doesn’t know it yet, but she wants Chuck. Also love how Chuck gets Karina with the plate and she reveals herself with an ough.

  25. I also didn’t know that Lisa was mentioned on the back of the tron board. Think I will have to check it out. Now it is onto story b of the seaon 2 finale. Only way I like to end my Mondays. Love Christmas TV, but i love to watch over and over how Chuck saves a handcuffed Sara and Casey. The fight scene is awesom, Sara’s CCHHUUCCKK!!! is great, but Casey’s uuuuggghhh is priceless.

  26. my favorite part is the girl on girl fight scene in sarah’s apartment, and then when chuck confronts sarah about her relationship with bryce.

that confrontation was important, coz it determined who chuck chose to trust at the beach. i’m surprised that sarah (and casey) didn’t berate chuck as hard as in ep#2.

but its OK, that opened up the scene where chuck puts some morality (or at least loyalty) into Carina, and she in turn schools him in the key characteristic of being a spy — they never let anyone in emotionally.

  27. Here we go, time for one of my all-time favourite episodes.

  28. Love druing the game at the beginning the whole Peaches/Peaches 2 – Chuck is devestated to find out that peaches was hit by a car.
Then the sunburn story – this has caused some controversy on the message boards over whether or not Sarah really has a sister, and if they have an episode with her sister who would play the role.

  29. I think the chicks-fighting scene is great and all, but I always thought of Sarah as the kind of spy who would keep a weapon in the shower. Something relatively water resistant like a Glock 27.

  30. Somebody mentioned it being the first girl on girl fight, but that was in Tango when Sarah takes on La Ciudad.
I would really like to see Carina come back for an episode in S3.
Funny when Casey says they are being debriefed. When I was military we would brief before a mission and debrief after a mission.

Fixing Morgan up on the date part was funny – “make sure you exagerate NO”
Love how during the penguin movie Morgan moves his head exactly like the penguin on screen.

  31. Sorry, had a meeting tonight. Just started watching I’ll get caught up after I watch ep 1.04.

  32. I’m sorry to see we didn’t trend. Aaargh!

I am one of those people who think that the Wookie is the best and my favorite of the season too. It’s the turning point of the show for me from ok to “this is getting good!”.

  33. Great episode, favorite part of the show was when Sarah was changing in the back of the Hummer… mmm~~~

  34. I love this episode. It’s nice to see Sarah have a female friend that she can relate too…even if Carina’s a bit of a self serving byotch. I’d love to see her return in S3…Casey needs a little loving!

  35. Shame we didn’t trend (Or haven’t trended since I wrote this). I wonder if twitter uses time and averages to figure out trends. Maybe a new hashtag would trend quicker than one a month old.

Anyway, not my favorite episode but I love the opening and the ending.

  36. So much for recon.
Carina did quite a number on Chuck with laying the whole Bryce thing on him. She definitely doesn’t believe in win-win relationships.
She never does get Morgan’s name right does she.

In my opinion Chuck is right. He wouldn’t have done it if Sarah had told him the truth in the first place. I just can’t understand how Sarah doesn’t see the relationship between trust and truth.
Good for Chuck for getting Carina to see the errors of her ways.

Love Sarah taking the photo of Casey handcuffed to the bed. I wondered if she framed it so he would have it for his bedroom.

One thing I just clued into on this episode (it only took watching it a bazillion times) – there is very little Buy More. Most of the humour is coming from the team, Morgan and Carina. I like the humour of Buy More, but I do think it is better in small doses.

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes, but then again I seem to have a lot of favourite episodes.

Is it just me, or do these episodes seem to go by way to quickly. Good thing I watched to first 3 episodes to get ready. It is going to be difficult when we get to Vs the Truth, I just can’t watch the one episode, in my opinion you have to watch Truth, Salami, Nemisis and Crown Vic all at the same time.
But I’m not addicted – I can quit anytime I want to really – oh what the heck:
Hi my name is Gord and I’m a Chuckaholic. It’s been 10 minutes since my last Chuck episode and I know I am going to fall off the wagon again.

The 12 step program – thats watching 12 episodes at a time right?

  37. So what ever happen to the goldfish…lol

  38. “You know, this is ridiculous! I’m buying the next suit. I can see my own boxer shorts through my pants”

Plus, when Casey is in the elevator with the handcuffs and part of the headboard, while the Mom & her daughter are in there, that’s hilarious!

  39. That was definately one of the good ones, at least we finally on the trensa a while later, well see you all next week … I hope

  40. Chuck Me Mondays has been an amazing campaign.
Makes me realise how much I love the first season…

  41. Love the look on Chuck’s face when Sarah is rubbing his neck.

  42. I love the way Sarah and Chuck are holding hands and then quickly let go as they leave Ellie and Awesome’s Apartment and comparing it to the end of “Chuck vs. The Best Friend.” Not only do they continue to hold hands after they look down and see what they are doing, but their fingers are also interlocked. It shows how far they have come and hopefully we will see that chemistry continue to grow in the third season.

  43. I always liked this episode because it has so many moments where the characters are just hanging out and even the mission was like hanging out at the pool with some Chuck jealousy and an improvised escape thrown in.

The end of the episode with Sarah’s middle name revealed is awesome.

  44. Chuck Me Mondays always go by way too quickly! Especially during an awesome episode like Wookie! Hope to see everyone next week – with whatever new recruits you can find!

  45. (one of the) best line in the episode is at the beginning, when chuck is walking sarah to her car after the game scene, when he says to her “wish i could access your file”. so nerdy-romantic! and the closing scene in sarah’s room is just a heart-breaker. sarah looks so forlorn when she mutters her middle name under her breath, as though she wishes she could let him more into her life, but she knows she needs to keep a professional distance from him. best part is when carina sews the seeds in chuck’s mind that sarah wants him by saying that she loves taking away from sarah what sarah likes. can’t wait till the next chuckmemonday!

  46. Casey: Smoking is bad for your health, get a newspaper, from the sixties

  47. I definitely would fall under the Chuckaholic category! This is one of my favorite episodes on the Season 1 DVD! Love Chuck’s face on the double date when the have to act closer than they are and how he watching what Sarah does throughout the episode & then shows up at the end with a pizza w/o olives b/c that’s the only true thing he know about her! Love it!! And “It’s Lisa. My middle name is Lisa.” Ahhh! When is the Second Season DVD coming out?!?

  48. My favorite part is the end. Starting from when everyone was saying the good-byes to Carina. I think that it is cool that other people in Chuck’s life can see how Sarah really feels about Chuck. Like Carina saying “The real reason is that I love taking what Sarah wants.” Chuck “Who me,Sarah, Sarah doesn’t want me.” Carina “She probably doesn’t know it herself yet, but I do.” I really love the part between Sarah and Chuck. I believe when Chuck brought the pizza without olive that shows how much he really cares for Sarah. By noticing what she doesn’t like without her tell him. I alway like parts between Chuck and Sarah the happy and sad. Zachary and Yvonne are great at the emotionally stuff.

  49. “Pick up a paper. From the sixties.”

    Such a great line.

  50. @ Mike B – Actually last week in Vs The Tango, Chuck uses “complicated” when talking to Ellie about his relationship with Sarah.

@ Gord – Re: Debrief. That’s Hollywood writers being Hollywood writers. Some things they have no clue about.

Sarah messed up big when she allowed Chuck to ask her anything about her past. By giving him permission to ask any question, she was setting herself up to have to lie. She’s a pretty smart cookie. She should have known that a Bryce question would have been at the top of Chuck’s question list. She shouldn’t have put herself in the position to be forced to lie.
