CASTING NEWS: Brandon Routh Signs On To Chuck (UPDATED)

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Brandon Routh joins 'Chuck'.
Brandon Routh joins 'Chuck'.

Chuck‘s Superman connection just got stronger! Brandon Routh, who portrayed Superman in the most recent movie, has joined Chuck for a multi-episode arc. He’ll be playing Shaw, a spy who takes control of Operation Bartowski and serves as a mentor for Chuck. And a rival for Sarah’s affections. (Cue the Charah outrage in the comments!)

UPDATED 08.28.09: Zap2It had a chat with Chuck co-creator/executive producer Chris Fedak about Routh joining the show and got a few more bits of information out of him:

  • Daniel Shaw joins the show in the fourth episodes for a multi-episode guest star role.
  • Shaw is an expert on The Ring, this season’s Big Bad.
  • Fedak declined to comment on how Shaw might affect the Chuck/Sarah relationship.
  • Fedak is excited to have landed an actor for the role who is “a leading-man, hero type of character” and “super funny.”

  1. I must kneel before the AWESOMENESS that is the Chuck’s showrunners!

    Brilliant! Just Brilliant!

  2. Holy wow! What a brilliant casting coup for Chuck. Getting Superman himself, great move by TPTB!

    • AGREED!!

Hi all! New here. As a big Brandon Routh fan, I’m thrilled with these news. I’ve never watched this show before –sorry– but I definitely WILL now! 🙂

  3. People are talking about brandon routh like he’s alot more famous than he is.

  4. Ummm he’s SuperMan.

  5. This guest star theme is like the the tour de france it just keeps going and going. We watch the show for the cast not to see who the producers sign as guest stars.
I have never heard of this guy beyond a failed attempt at reprising the role of Superman.
Another point these mini-series within the season seem to harm ratings.
Sorry, to rain every one’s good news but this my opinion

    • Brandon Who…. This has the makings of another “Cole” arc. If you check the ratings, Lethal Weapon was if not the worst, close to worst rated episode of season 2. If this guy is to be used in a similar vein, it will be bad news for our favorite show.

      • I have a growing doubt I will stay with the show–I am one the angst continues to bother—looks like they are having a creative problem getting new ideas for the comedy and adventure. If they have to depend on the “angst” they evidently are limited in their writing abilities.
They will not miss me, however they might miss the people that leave with me–sad. The reason Superman was available is because he has not been overwhelmed with work since Superman. Cannot blame him for signing on–it is work and a paycheck—I cannot enjoy the excitment and comedy if there is all this ridiculous heartache. Good writers do not need it!!!

      • I agree with your analysis. As much as I like “Chuck”, the angst just drives me away. I did check on the ratings and found Lethal Weapon was the 2nd worse; Broken Heart was the worst. You would think this informtion would tell the creative staff something about how the audience reacts to the “drive them apart” mentality.

  6. I seems to me that if the photo is indeed a promotional still from the Chuck episodes(s) in question that there’s a clear attempt at referencing the Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt character type from the Mission: Impossible flicks. Interesting choice, because in my mind the Cole Barker character from vs. the Beefcake was an attempt at a Bond-esque British spy. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the M.I. movies, I did think that having a lead agent who wasn’t such a clearly misogynistic womanizer was a refreshing bit of cinema. Perhaps the parallels will continue with Routh, who will see the value of the Charah team as an asset (…to the asset, as General Beckman says).

  7. yvoone should be on dancing with the stars

    • Not sure but I thought last season of DWTS was the final one, at least thats what I remember hearing on CBS when it ended. Any ways, Yvonne would be awsome and give me a reason to accualy watch it.

  8. Ackk! Some fans are trying to avoid spoilers. Yes, there was a warning, but most of the post(and spoiler details) ended up on the front page.

It would great if the site could be more considerate of things like that in the future. Thanks!

  9. “and a rival for Sarah’s affections.” Geez. Thanks writers from being “so original” in your plans for Season 3. Pathetic.

    • agreed. episode arcs with charah rivals are no longer creative enough to hold our attention. plus their relationship is to developed for this to work as well as before

      • I agree Rick Holy–nauseating to me and totally uncalled for–Fedak and Swartz may be mocking the angst haters to let us know it is their show.—real lack of creativity. –maybe Castle or the Closer will be on at the same time. Closer is in a totally different league with some of the best casting and writing on television. Perhaps Swartz And Fedak can watch those shows and learn something. It should tell us something when the creators are dependent on the Comedy-con crowd to provide ideas . Closer starts up again in December.

  10. wait… he’s gay? And he want’s Chuck to be gay?

  11. Well, here we go again, another reprise of seasons 1 and 2, to hell with what
the fans (who saved the show) want. What do they get after all of that effort
and work? They get Shaw instead of Bryce!! Why not bring Cole back too? That
way Sarah can have 2 love interests while Chuck tries to fend them off with
intersect 2.0! Maybe Jill can be brought back too, just so Chuck can show
Sarah he’s not going to take this lying down or maybe the bromance time can be
increased for Chuck/Morgan-they can spend their spare time playing video games
just like they did when they were teenagers and 20 something geeks. That should really put Sarah in her place, really put her on notice here-don’t mess
with Chuck, right? Hope my sarcasm is being picked up here.

If Chuck really needs a mentor, why not bring Roan back? He could serve as a
father/uncle figure who could tutor Chuck without being a rival for Sarah’s
affections. It appears the show’s producers, writers, and idea people either
don’t look at this website or even worse look at it and just arrogantly ignore
what the core fans have made repeatedly clear-they want the relationship to
move forward, not a soap opera repeat of the first two seasons. If this is the
way it’s going to be why not show old reruns of the series “Moonlighting” just
to get people in the teasing mood right before each episode of Chuck? That
    should really help the ratings!

Well at least the fans won’t have to worry about NBC screwing up the show with
poor scheduling and promotion. The shows producers have already done that with
their flagrant disregard for the core fan wishes. It wasn’t broken so they decided to fix it and fix it they have-they just killed it. They have done what they have liked and now they are going to have to like what they have
done. I think there will be massive negative fan reaction here, just like
there was at Comic-con when Schwartz made his comments on the Chuck/Sarah
relationship for season 3. Guess he was not kidding or didn’t take the warning
seriously. If this really turns into another soap opera, then this is the end
of the show. Forget about any back nine, much less a season 4. This no more
than a slap in the face to the viewers who saved the show and with the show not scheduled to return till March there was plenty of time to be more creative than this, budget cuts not withstanding. Well turnabout is fair play.
The tv sets will be turned off or switched to another channel and the NBC
website will not be visited to watch episodes. Subway sandwiches will not be
    bought.

After all of this effort that went into saving the show, this is what the fans
get for all their hard work and dedication-NOTHING. This is really the last
thing I expected the direction the show would take. Disappointment is the least thing I feel here. It feels more like a betrayal and pure outrage.

OK, end of rant. Comments are invited. Maybe I’m overreacting here, thanks.

    • Hi Robert:

I am not sure there is enough information here to assume that this will be the typical “love triangle”. It states a rival for Sarah’s affection, but that seems to me very vague and might not be enough to qualify as repeats of seasons 1 and 2.

Also, since this Shaw is Chuck’s mentor and he is taking over “Operation Bartowski”, I am sure he will be careful initally with his interactions to Chuck, Sarah and Casey. His primary purpose is to help make Chuck a more effective spy. I noticed with most of the “love triangles”, the third party usually picks up on the attraction with Chuck and Sarah. I think this Shaw guy will likely pick up on it as well and since his purpose is to help Chuck develop into a spy, he might be cautious about any romantic interaction with Sarah knowing that might hinder Chuck’s effectivness as a spy.

If Shaw knows about the Intersect 2.0 (which I assume he would), then he will be doubly careful not to do anything to possibly cause that mechanism to malfunction. Getting too friendly with Sarah, I’m sure would qualify if he picks up on their mutual attraction.

I might be totally off on this assessment, but I think we need a little more information before we jump to any conclusions. I appreciate everyone’s comments.

      • I agree with Pat, although I too am a little sceptical about S3 it realy is too early to say what is/is not realy going to be final and with the coments about chara that dont elaberate and are quite possibly BS to jurk us around, rants like Robert’s seem to be taking it and filling in the blanks. Come on people theres still like 6 months left till Chuck acualy starts back up and there’s next to no evidance to back stuff with all the little details.

I however DO like the idea of Roan coming back as a mentor and IF things like new love intrests between chara ARE implimented, this show may just be dead to me

Sorry if this makes litle sinse, its late

      • Robert–I have agreed with you before and I agree with you again—the only good thing about the show starting in March is that if this type of behavior by Fedak and Swartz continues we have time to become apathetic about the show and will care less what they do. They have to realize that the enthusiastic crowds only amout to a few thousand fans—they need millions to survive. They have done a good job of getting us to care for Sarah and Chuck but I am confident they will blow it in this year’s episodes. Such great potential probably being wasted by what appears to be a “we will do what we want–its our show attitude”. Looks like season one and season two all over again–I have already seen them so why waste my time???

      • I really like the idea of Sarah flirting or being flirted with causing a reaction from the Intersect 2.0. I think it would be a good comic element and create more angst for the characters. It creates a lot of potential story lines. And might keep Sarah from entering a relationship with someone else. And would keep me happy as a Charah fan to not see Sarah paired up with every living male that ends up on the show.

      • Well said, and interesting theory. I think this season could be the best yet.

    • i think you’re massively overreacting

there are masses of possible scenarios this could play out as

If you were wanting Sweetness and Kittens and fluffly “Charah” from season 3 you were always going to be disappointed. These two are going to continually have problems of somekind with their relationship as they’re just so different from each other.

All people are doing is reading 1 sentence fragment and then making all kinds of assumptions based on 5 words without any kind of situational context at all, but you act like you already know the entire details of the script

      seriously please stop it.

      • Well said! Some angst is necessary for the sexual tension to work. Once they get together/get married, most people lose interest and the show is over.

I’m confident the producer/writers will be creative enough. I mean, they KNOW what’s at stake here.

  12. Another genius casting move for Chuck. Routh may not have the comedy chops to keep up with the rest of them, but he is Superman, so for the pop-culture-ness alone, I think this is pretty awesome. And since I was possibly one of three people who actually liked the whole Sarah/Colt/Chuck triangle and am not a Charah shipper, I’m sure I’ll love this as well. Bring it on Schwartz and Fedak and Co! Just don’t leave Casey out too much, wouldn’t want to hurt the big guys feelings!

    • Also? I consider myself a core fan, been one since the before the beginning even if I don’t post on these forums, and I think this backlash against the showrunners is getting really petty with regards to “what the core fans want”, vis a vis Charah. Betrayal? Get over it. Please.

    • bethany actually

Routh not have the comedy chops? The best part about Superman Returns were his scenes as the geeky Clark Kent, I thought. 🙂

    • I HAVE GOT IT!!!!! Brandon Roth can be a bad guy that has infiltrated the Government looking to assasinate Chuck. Just when he thinks he can kill Chuck with Kung Fu Chuck counters with KRAV MAGA and beats Roth almost sensless. Roth gets up with a gun and shoots Chuck through the liver (lots of blood) Casey comes in (or Sarah) and kills Roth. Chuck is uncounscious and when he gets to the hospital the blood supply is too low for a wound of this type. Ellie calls Morgan, Big Mike and Morgan close the Buy More. All the employees go to the hospital and give blood for Chuck, a real show of affection. Chuck’s heart temporarily stops beating, he sees a golden light (Sarah weeps uncontrollably). He is kept from entering the light by a beautiful middle aged lady and a 10 year old girl. They tell him he cannot leave, he has important work to do–the woman kisses him on the cheek and the little girl smiles (very big)and thanks him.Chuck flashes on a picture of himself, Sarah, twin blonde girls around 3 years old in white martial arts uniforms and a dark haired baby in Sarahs arms. Chuck wakes up with Sarah (teary eyed) leaning over him. Sarah, feels like she let Chuck down and wants to take care of Chuck after he gets home from the hospital–Ellie agrees if she can come by once a day to check on Chuck. Chuck goes to Sarah’s and sees a picture of Sarah, the ten year old girl and the lady he saw with the girl in the golden light. It was a pictue of Sarah, Sarah’s twin sister and their mother. Sarah said they were killed in a car wreck. Chuck looks at Sarah and says “You will never believe what is in our future. Sarah gives Chuck a questioning look and Chuck says “We are going to be blessed”. The end. (be my guest F & S) 3rd or 4th episode of the third season. Chuck never moves out.

    • Oh, believe me, Brandon has the comedic chops. 😉 He was very funny in “Table for Three” (a film he made with Sophia Bush) and in “Zach & Miri Make a Porno”. Plus his Clark was really funny. He’s got what it takes.

  13. i loved him in superman

  14. Petty, misenkay? Get over it? I don’t think so. The bottom line on this will
be told in the ratings,NBC web hits, and sponsor support once the season starts. I may be wrong but I think the vast majority of people who post this
forum will feel pretty much the way I do with some differences here and there.

If it’s possible you need to look at past postings on this forum and the Nick
C blog to get a better understanding of how a lot of people ( not all ) feel
about where they wanted the “Charah” relationship to go for season 3, certainly not a repeat of seasons 1 and 2 which is apparently what is going to
be offered-Shaw subbing for Bryce for a “multi-episode arc” which will absorb
much of the 13 episode season, in short a repeat of seasons 1 and 2 for the
“Charah” relationship-the same old thing, just a different guy in essentially
    the same role.

I guess fan reaction once the season starts will ultimately decide the show’s
fate. I hope I’m wrong, but my intuition tells me this change will not fly.
Would be interested in seeing more comments on this, thanks.

    • Well, I do post over at Nick C’s blog and also on TWoP so I’m current on most of the stuff being said about the season 3 direction.

I personally think that Chuck is so much more than just the romance angle, it’s the comedy, the action, the hilarious pop culture references and the overall balance of spy vs. normal life. If I wanted to watch a soap, I’d tune into Lifetime. I just don’t think it is at all fair to infer that the core fans are all pushing 100% for Charah. Cause, whatever.

I trust the showrunners to keep the show great, and think that if the fans had any say in the storylines this is one core fan who wouldn’t like that. The minute Chuck and Sarah hook up it’s over!

I totally agree with Eowyn. It’s a journey, I trust that Josh S. and Chris F. et al, know what they are doing. IMO, they aren’t betraying anyone with their vision for the show even if some already think that without having seen the new season.

  15. I didn’t like agent Cole at first in “versus the beefcake”…but I just rewatced “…lethal weapon” and I enjoyed it. Sepinwall, who is a critic I respect and a huge supporter of the show also gave high marks to that particular episode. So that’s it for that little bit of your rant.
I hope most fans don’t watch Chuck for the romance, although that’s always nice. We watch it because of the comedy, action, and fantasy. It’s a wonderful escape and not a soap opera. In soap operas people come back from the dead and… well maybe it is a soap. Anyway.
The writers on this show are a creative group and I trust them to take us on a “hero’s journey” in pieces.
    Yes, you are overreacting.

    • bethany actually

      Eowyn, brilliantly put:

“The writers on this show are a creative group and I trust them to take us on a ‘hero’s journey’ in pieces.”

      I agree 100%.

      • Eowyn and Bethany:

I also agree. Since the writers, support cast and actors put in all the hard work for two seasons, I think we have to trust them on their vision as well.

  16. Maybe, if the writer’s decide to create a little twist, the affection will be one-sided on Sarah’s part? Maybe Shaw will have a little more sense than Bryce.

*crosses fingers* Here’s hoping for the best…

  17. I think this just sucks.

  18. The 3-episode arc Charah rivals are getting old. Think of something new to come between them please.

  19. I’ll chime in again since there have been numerous more comments on this thread. “Charah” (of which I’m one) people DON’T watch the show ONLY for “Charah.” But let’s be honest, the Chuck/Sarah interaction is if not THE driving force of the show, it’s right up there. Go back to Season 1 and watch from the Pilot episode to the season finale.

“All we’re sayin” is don’t rehash the same crapola over again in Season 3. Moving the relationship forward offers so many great opportunities to learn more about both of these characters. Having to deal with “rivals for affection” over and over and over again starts to put this show on the level of some of the teenaged geared crap on the CW.

Please, writers. Let’s explore the characters of Chuck and Sarah in a little more depth by having them get to know each other better – by moving things forward – not by cheesy “affection rivalry” shenanigans. If we want that, we’ll turn to the CW!

    • Very well said. It is time for some new material.

    • we have no idea how “rival for affection” will pan out hell thats so damn vague it could mean anything, i think i posted at least 6 different options off the top of my head in the forums

you are outright saying you dont trust the people who’ve made one of the best shows on tv for the last two seasons to continue doing so
again immediate negativity and no consideration of the possible options.

    • “Go back to Season 1 and watch from the Pilot episode to the season finale.”

Been there…done that. I stand by what I said.

  20. Alris, I totally agree with you!! I haven’t read all these comments because everyone is saying the same things… It’s really frustrating to see those people so disappointed for season 3 before it even starts!! We jump to conclusions without even knowing what all these things mean…
I’m really sorry for this because I thought that we loved Chuck… (even with his NON-EXISTED flaws…)

    • Emily, The flames of disappointment are being fanned by the creators of the show. I do not have faith in their abilities–Some small areas of scripts are poorly concieved, timelines are ignored, even certain events are not resolved. Inspite of that I have enjoyed the show because I thought the love between Sarah and Chuck would grow into a permanent relationship. Then the potential for comedy and adventure can really contribute to the show.

To me the love between Sarah and Chuck is the number one item of interest in the show—nothing is even close—the comedy and adventure can only become relevent when the constant “angst” and heatache is resolved. MAYBE ITS AN AGE THING!! I am hoping apathy sets in and not anger. I have no less than 20 friends that seem to be getting to the point they want to write Subway and Toyota in mass—-I hope it does not come to that—I have better things to do with my time than waste time on a show that does not seem to care about what I think is a majority of its fan.

  21. You know, if the producers or writers read any of these boards, they must be laughing their asses off. They drop one little comment during a casting call and it’s like throwing gasoline on to a fire. They have a long history of dropping hints that can be interpreted in a number of ways. Usually there’s a great upheaval of opinion and, in the end, things don’t play out the way the fans expected. Usually, everyone is happy with the end result. While I’m just as curious as everyone else in the direction of season 3, I’m not willing to over-react with a “it’s just like the Cole episodes” reaction. They’ve given us a great ride for 2 seasons. I’ll trust their judgement on the plan for season 3.

    • I agree! I’ve loved Chuck, thus far, and I trust the writers to bring us another great season.

      • I couldn’t agree more!!
one thing is certain: if we keep judge them for sth that we don’t even know what it is, in the end we’ll waste the whole “save Chuck” movement and the efforts of the TRUE Chuck fans….

  22. Prez of Buymoria

    This is so sweet!

What particularly excites me about this casting is that hopefully it will help the 18-49 female demo portion of the show that seems to be an issue.

As far as storyline goes, what intrigues me the most is how Casey will react to someone else being deemed the “leader” of Team Bartowski.

    Should be some good fireworks!

    • I agree, this could be a huge ratings boost to the show if handled right. I don’t think he will be another Cole Barker, and rival for Sarah’s affections could just mean that Chuck gets jealous of the new super spy in town because of his own insecurities.
I also can’t wait to see Casey’s interactions with Shaw – they should be great.
As more and more news comes out about the new season, I am getting more and more excited that it is going to be awesome. I consider myself to be somewhere in between a shipper and a regular fan. I don’t particularly like some of the angst, but so far I’m willing to put up with it because Chuck is such an awesome show.
When you think about it, how many shows that you watch would get you this worked up over a couple of fictional characters? That alone proves that Chuck is worth watching.

  23. Like Rick Holy, I’m also a big Charah fan. Although their relationship isn’t the only reason I watch the show, it is the main reason. I’m not going to judge this early. But, God forbid, if they do play this one out an any way like the triangles in the first 2 seasons, then they’re going to get a harsh ratings lesson. For the sake of the show’s future, I’m hoping that this is going to be played out in a different way and I’m going to reserve judging it until I see what direction the show’s going in and/or I start watching the episode when this guy enters the show. Notice I said “start watching”. Hopefully, they will play this out in a way that I’ll be able to keep watching.

  24. Who said anything about Chuck/Sarah hooking up? Nobody wants that on a permanent basis until the series finale. Rick Holy makes a good point. Their
relationship is the driving source of the show or at least close to it. The
rest of the storylines merely support that although they are very good and
fun to watch. The point for season 3 was to grow that relationship and learn
more about their earlier lives as they learn to relate to each other as they
both cope with the inmpact of Bryce’s “death” and intersect 2.0. Obviously as
they do that they are going to have problems. Overcoming those challenges is
what a relationship is all about and what drives the romance part of the show.

What do we really have here with this Shaw thing? If he is to be a mentor and
yet a rival for Sarah’s affections there is an inherent contradiction here.
How can Shaw and Chuck possibly get along and support each other in this kind
of a situation both professionally and personally? Human nature says they
can’t and I think the writers are stretching credibility to the breaking point
here. Of course when writing a script the writers can make it come out anyway
they want to but will it really be believeable? The Cole appearance was for 2
episodes. The Shaw impact is for a “multi-arc” of episodes which will use up a
good deal of the season assuming a 13 episode run.

In the meantime what are Sarah and Casey supposed to do during Shaw’s stay?
Someone’s impact will have to be limited and I think that will be Casey.
Lou’s previous articles inferred that Sarah/Casey would be Chuck’s sensei
but how will they function and relate to Chuck on missions now-simply as
addtional support or what? Maybe I’m missing something here but I just can’t see this working out in a credible way. Anyway, like it or not, it’s done and we will just have to wait and see, hope for the best.

Insofar as the producers/writers “laughing their asses off” at what is posted
on these boards, if that is true, they would be wise to take seriously what
the viewers think and include that in their planning as additional input before final decisions are made. In the final analysis, the viewers will determine the fate of the show, not the producers/writers, thanks.

    • I would rather see Shaw and Morgan hook up—and I do not want to see that—It looks like the show may be doomed. The most enthusiastic fans against the “angst” were probably some of the most enthusiastic fans that saved the show. I cannot say it will be interesting to see because I doubt if I hang around more than a couple of episodes—sad.

  25. Pat, thanks for previous comments which have good ,insightful analysis.

Alris, I don’t agree with you, PERIOD. The proof will be in the pudding when
the episodes come out. I hope I’m wrong about all of this but don’t ask me to stop posting my opinions simply because you don’t like them. You evidently did
not read them very thoroughly or don’t quite understand what I”m saying.
Nobody wants “sweetness and fluffy”. The relationship needs to grow, not regress.

  26. The way I’m looking at things is this: The Chuck writers basically climax at the idea of parallels showing growth.

    Bryce:
Nemesis – Sarah has feelings for both Chuck and Bryce but puts Chuck on the back-burner. Seriously considers leaving with Bryce.
Break-Up – Sarah tells Bryce everything will be strictly professional as she fawns over Chuck.
The Ring – Sarah decides to go against orders of being reassigned to work with Bryce so she can stay with Chuck.

What we’re left with at this point is that we don’t yet have a parallel to Cole showcasing Chuck and Sarah’s growth. It’s basically a second chance for Sarah to make up for her previous mistakes with Cole. I’m looking forward to some resolution.

    • I don’t think Sarah made any mistakes with Cole. He asked her to go with him and she said no. It was Chuck who never saw all the moments she rejected Cole’s advances. The ending said something like “Who wouldve thought, Cole Barker loses out to Chuck Bartowski.” I think it’ll be the same with Shaw. Although I know Sarah must have been crushed by Chuck taking on the intersect 2.0 willingly after making her believe he wanted a normal life so much that she was willing to go with him.
I think I’m going to go mad waiting for season 3. See you all in the loony bin.

  27. Well not to disagree but I do consider myself a hardcore chara fan and I’m really getting tired of these shananagans!!
I mean we all know that it would be the end of the world for them to get together , (ginormous eye roll) but the writers cannot keep doing this dance!! Not after what happened in vs The Colonel!! Especially because of what was mentioned in the last chuck vs the podcast about how Sarah is so in love with chuck that she was willing to give up spydome for him (me paraphrasing). You dnt give up your lives career for someone who is just a “fling”.
I mean it’s one thing if every male guest star goes gaga over Sarah but if she is going to play along or actually like him just because he may be less clumsy or a better spy(chuck qualities which we all absolutely adore!!) then can we really trust “the Sarah character” ‘s emotions?
I mean if she is really okay with almost quitting your job for someone one week and then ditching him for the new model… Well I think the writers have some serious kinks to figure out.

  28. On a somewhat unrelated note, how many Superman movies has Brandon Routh appeared in? I know I’ve seen one – but has there been a second (yet)??

    • some guy named john

He’s in the movie, Stuntmen, with Zachary Levi. They have a very comical bathroom scene together, otherwise the movie is rather low-grade.

  29. WOW…just wow.

I really am disapointed in the reactions here. We all know the Charah thing is a hot button issue with the fans but seriously guys, we have known for over a MONTH that both Chuck AND Sarah were getting new “love interests”. I dont get why this is a such a shock. It wouldnt matter who they said was cast as Shaw, because the shippers (and yes Im one of them) are going nuts claiming they didnt know this was going to happen.

None of us know what will happen with this character. JS and CF throw around the term “love interest” and it means so many different things. We dont know what is going to be the end result with this, or what they are planning. Maybe Shaw and Sarah bond over trying to make Chuck into a better spy and Chuck sees it as her liking him, maybe Shaw likes Sarah and Chuck says hell no and fights for her, bottom line is–we dont know!

I must remind everyone that for all the ppl that bailed after Beefcake, you missed THE most amazing episodes (and Charah moments) in the entire series. So please just calm down and watch s.3 before you go off about it.

    • The only way I would enjoy Routh on this show is if he is an evil spy that has infiltrated the ranks of the CIA to kidnap or kill Chuck—somebody will need to kill Routh when he exits the show—Why not? Several of Casey’s own men had been “turned to the bad side”. During the “Ring” in the intersect room it was stated that the new evil doers never fail. Once they hear of the key to their defeat in the intersect room they will feel they must kill or kidnap Chuck. Routh is too pretty to remain a “good guy”. He would rather die than go to prison and become someone’s girl friend. Guess who gets suspicious first, thats right Casey—one guy who will enjoy the “kill”. That would be a great way to increase Casey’s importance to the show. I guess Routh could also go after Chuck and fly out a twenty story window when Chuck does the “Morgan”.I wonder if on the way down Roth would tell himself “Wait, this is the wrong show! No cape–“SPLAT”.

      • Interesting idea about Shaw being an infiltrater. Realy, how exactly is he an expert on The Ring when no one even knew about it till “The Ring”. Granted that there are potentaly months “in sceries” that we dont see in between seasons and maybe the CIA/NSA got alot of info on T.R., but we realy didnt get alot on Fulcrum within 2 years and this is much bigger and even more secretive. So Shaw as an infiltrater, sorta makes since, good idea at the very least.

  30. I couldn’t care less about Superman’s casting but I am very excited to see some of these comments. Sometimes since I’ve started delving into these boards and stuff I’ve felt like I’m the only one willing to give the writers a break. Everything I’ve seen seems to be about how much people are fed up with or going to stop watching because of the Chuck and Sarah realtionship. I love the Chuck and Sarah will they/won’t they stuff as much as the comedy. It’s obvious they WILL. Just maybe not right away. And EITHER way I’ll watch because there are many many many things to enjoy about the show and not be a fair weather fan that jumps ship because they’re unhappy with the way something went. So I applaud you guys sticking up for the show or at least giving it a chance to play out before flipping out. 🙂

  31. I agree, in principle, with the comments made by Larry1234, Rick Holy, Amelia,
Tyler, and Sidney C. We will just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Will be waiting with more foreboding than anticipation, however.

Keep the comments coming. They are interesting and fun to read, especially
    with so much variety, thanks.

    • I have a question????DOES CHUCK WANT TO STAY A SPY??? OR DOES HE JUST WANT TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR SARAH AND CASEY???THEY CAN REBUILD THE INTERSECT WITH CHUCK’S FATHER’S HELP (HE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SEEN ON THE SHOW) Chuck could also accelerate the reconstruction—They will need to remove the intersect from Chuck’s head or remove him. I thought he wanted a normal life?—Everything sounds like he wants to stay a spy–or does he—I do not plan on watching a bunch of love triangles–I do not do soaps—now I am depressed—that may not be all bad–I am getting closer to apathy—and that may be good when it comes to Chuck. I thought of a great storyline for Chuck that would pull Chuck and Sarah together. Of course it will take two solid core copper clad bullets through Chuck’s liver—at least they will not blow his liver apart–just a couple holes and lots of blood. He took two shots for Sarah and Casey. Perhaps his heart could stop for a couple of minutes. There is so much you could do with that—.

      • I can’t understand what you’re saying, I’m sorry…
but removing the intersect from Chuck’s head is really difficult because as Chuck’s father said to Bryce in the finale episode, they made many changes to the initial intersect… so, I think that it is difficult even for him to figure out how to get it out…

  32. Katie, thanks for your comment. Never thought of it that way, great analysis.

  33. I can only add my vote to the list of people who want to see Chuck and Sarah develop their relationship. Whilst I agree “love triangles” make for great stories, and all credit to the writers for a fantastic 2 seasons, this story needs to continue to evolve, otherwise it will risk losing interest.

  34. You people not realized that all these tidbits about this Shaw character are to generate and keep the show’s buzzes? Don’t fret over something that we aren’t fully informed about. Even if Shaw is to become a third wheel in the Chuck and Sarah relationship, it’s obvious that in the end of the arc, Sarah is to reject him and choose Chuck.

Let the writers do what they have to do.

  35. Go to you tube and search Romance s02e22. 😀
I think the whole season 2 is there. 😉

  36. I’m not sure where all this gossip came from about Shaw being a love interest for Sarah, have posters even read the actual article that this piece was based on?

The ONLY, repeat, ONLY reply that Fedak gave to the question of how this affects Chuck/Sarah dynamic was “I’d like to remain a little murky on this one.” Nowhere in this does it suggest ANYTHING of a love interest, and, even in the bullet points listed in this piece it states that “Fedak declined to comment on how Shaw might affect the Chuck/Sarah relationship.”

I believe that the addition of the line “And a possible love interest for Sarah” was an opinionated (read: NON-FACTUAL) statement made by the author, and appears to have no empirical base thus should in no way be taken as fact.

Am I the only one who sees this casting role as a slightly more hands-on replacement for Langdon Graham? The fact that they’re playing the line that ‘Chuck becomes a highly dangerous and volatile weapon’ would suggest that the man to take over the entire operation would have at least the same rank, if not outranking Gen. Beckman, and thus the idea that he would fall for a mere Agent is fairly dubious.

Can we please appreciate that we have such little solid evidence, main sources being 10 word casting descriptions and very vague interviews from known interview-wordplayers Fedak and Schwartz (eg. “You will see 2 weddings in the S2 finale”). Specifically to the hardcore shippers, YOU are the ones suggesting that every male guest star will fall for Sarah, with no better proof than this case right here. I encourage you to find an official source which says ANYTHING about Shaw being part of Chuck/Sarah/Anyone’s relationships.

From Matt, an Australian Chuck fan who is VERY disappointed at the ‘jump to conclusions’ theme throughout these posts. Feedback welcome, i’m VERY willing to debate points i’ve addressed above

    • THANK YOU!!! All though I am a bit sceptical as I can see both sides to a degree but am saving reservations till the time comes (like with Stargate Universe). Its sad to see so many people thinking they have most if not the whole picture when infact its just a sliver from the frame, many of the rants have such negitivity over what, a small, vague tidbit that may or may not have marit. Thats not to say stop thinking and speaking your minds, please do! It just has gotin to the point that its sick. I frequintly loose the will to even read half the comments and forum posts any more cus its the same damn thing from what seams like every one. I agree The Chara issue is huge, its a/the main driving force for the show but theres many more great attributes to Chuck and you all know it! Realy how often do you find a great show that you realy love and are 95-100% happy with every thing that happens, it dosent (unless they dont have the air time to make those “mistakes”). Please dont (over)speculate and condem Chuck to death for some (mis)info you hear/read untill you watch it, or till we have a much larger, fuller picture at least.

      “Chuck till proven Heroes”

Sorry its late again and didnt mean to rant (if it even makes since), but aparently “Thank you!!! was too short!? XP

  37. I wonder if he will go to work at the Buy More for cover. I could see a Shaw/Anna/Morgan triangle happening. It would be so funny to see Anna throwing herself at the new guy.
Maybe he will be the new Ass. Man.

  38. that of course will be infinitely better(though not for Morgan, of course)than
anything that has to do with Charah, and in a way it also makes sense, since Morgan is alluded to go full steam towards Carina in Ep.2 , then it makes sense that Anna will try to get him back for that.

  39. What I got out of the zap2it interview is that Chris declined to speak about the Chuck, Sarah AND CASEY dynamic of the show. He was not asked specifically about Charah (at least as the interview reads). Therefore he did not ‘decline talking about’ Charah, he declined talking about the entire TEAM, but said instead that there would be ‘some really cool surprises’.

I personally doubt very much that ‘really cool surprises’ involves intentionally angering fans.

The creators of the show have stated that they learned from the on again off again mistakes of last season. So IMHO this is all a big to-do about nothing.

The problem is that all of the media is reporting this story to sensationalize it, or just not being careful enough about what Chris actually said. I see no evidence that Chris was asked about Charah specifically. He was asked about the whole team dynamic.

  40. BORING!!! They have killed this idea about 1 million times!! This show has so much potential! We dont not need another repeat of who is sarah going to fall in love with after meeting for 5 seconds plot. I will still watch the show regardless of what happens but they have done a terrible job at showing the fans appreciation for all their hard work if this is the best they can come up with. My heart is hoping that this isn’t to be taken to seriously but my head thinks otherwise =( Here comes the will they wont they SO ORIGINAL!!!

  41. mmm, it is always an interesting read here. I too would be disappointed if the end of season 3 did not end up with CHUCK & Sarah together. I think that there is even a possibility of doing that within the (suggested) story line above. It could very well be that with Routh taking on the role of mentor, it would give Chuck and Sarah more time to get closer and would allow Sarah to do that because she would not be in control (like when Trish was on the show). The key theme through out season one and two was that they could not get together because Sarah is Chuck’s handler. In any case I think the writers have done a very good job of season’s 1 & 2 so I have no doubt that they will do very well in season 3 with the budget that they have. I know that it is unlikely that Sarah and Chuck get together as one person her put it …. it would kill the show … or would it. I think if you can show that the relationship between Chuck & Sarah is getting stronger plus the whole idea of Chuck getting better as a spy (which I am glade the are adding in season 3) could make for an interesting season. I also think it has been suggested that Casey will have a love interest … mmmm, I smell a return of Ilsa?

    Rod

  42. Routh would have been fine for one episode, but three seems a bit much. I’d rather see Scott Bakula or Gary Cole since they have blood relations with the character’s. Roan would also be awesome to see again. I just rewatched his episode and I think it’s one of the best of S2.

Besides, if Sarah wouldn’t leave Chuck for major hotties like Bryce or Cole, then Routh has little chance of success. Routh’s kind of bland in the looks department. 😛

I just hope that Routh isn’t taking precious screen time away from Casey, Ellie or Morgan.

    • I agree Jeff–The regulars on the show are great young talents–Having a guest bad guy is one thing, however multiple episodes are a little much. Ellie is a very accomplished actress that has been excellent on other shows. Morgan the little bearded man has had some funny spots but could get more involved in the story lines. Although I did not like the “Break Up” Sarah’s refusal to let Bryce lead was funny and her blank look while talking to Ellie when she said Chuck was like a duck-I thought that was funny. All the characters can be expanded–If Chuck had not been renewed there would have been a lot of unanswered questions (as there were in the Life tv series). The Ring was not in my top 5 favorites for the season–too many unanswered questions. I hate to admit it however it is true-I get too upset over the show–especially the angst factor—it is only a tv show and there are too mny real situations inwhich to be concerned.–I am glad that in most cases cooler heads than mine prevail.

    • “Besides, if Sarah wouldn’t leave Chuck for major hotties like Bryce or Cole, then Routh has little chance of success. Routh’s kind of bland in the looks department.”

I strongly disagree with that! Routh is so very handsome. 😉

  43. on an un-realated note: im pretty sure Yvonne won the tv.com blondes vs blondes vote! way to go to the fans that voted for her! we rock!

    • well apparently i spoke too soon. though she is well ahead in the poll they didnt stop the voting yet, even though the instructions are to check back ON Aug. 31st to see who won, not after Aug. 31st, which is the direction they are heading.oh well.

  44. Well the description of the casting says he will rival with Chuck for Sarah’s attentions, meaning that he is the one going for it, now, if the writers are coherent of what happened before, Sarah will most likely like this guy, as a friend/fellow agent that wants to make Chuck better in the spy world, but she will rebuke his efforts on the romantic side. He’s no better then Bryce was or Cole, so why should this be any different? Of course it’s gonna be a wild ride, cause as usual, most of the stuff we got to see is somehow shown as seen/felt by Chuck, and Chuck is still a very unsecure person, especially when it comes to Sarah. I just hope this time around he won’t stay there moping like a lil kid and instead be aggressive, i’m sure Sarah would love it.

  45. Ali Adler (“Chuck” writer and co-producer) said on her Twitter account that the Shaw character and his dealings between Chuck and Sarah would not be the same as the Bryce/Cole story lines for whatever that means. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I just can’t see them doing the same old love triangle thing again. How many times has Sarah had the offer to run off with some other “superspy” only to stay and be with Chuck? By my count, it’s twice with Bryce and once with Cole. It’s redundant.

I believe the plan is to put Chuck and Sarah together permanently, but it won’t be until the end. Kind of like how “Friends” put Ross and Rachel back together in the finale.

  46. Enough with all the Charah outrage people. These teasers are meant to drive us crazy but that does not mean they are true. In fact all these crazy spoliors get me pumped up for the third season, and it should pump you up too. If not, you don’t belong in the Chuck Nation. Theres more to the show than Charah. So shut the *%&$ up already! I admit I am huge Chara fan and that I have compained about all the triangles and I agree they should do something new about the whole will they/ won’t they thing ,but seriously, to stop watching and show because of some stupid teasers. You are a disgrace. If the writers of the show are reading this blog or whatever this is, their probably laughing out how they driving absolutly mad. We are probably so far from the truth that all this outrage against our favorite real/yet not really real couple. Keep watching the show, the ratings will go, we’ll get another season along with others and than you can be as happy as can be because they will get together if not this season than the next. So shut up you little *&%#! Excuse the language but I have had enough. Chuck is amazing so don’t stop watching because of some damn teasers. I mean the third season is months away and you all act like you know what is going to happen. WTF? Shutup! I dont like the whole love triangle thing either but hey, I learn to ignore that for I have full faith in the writers that the 3rd season is going to be wickedly awesome. SO SHUTUP!!! No more hating, just more CHUCK LOVING!!! 🙂

    • Hey bro (or sis). I have a suggestion for you. Xanax! 😉

Really, who cares what ANYBODY says on these blogs. People (including me – and you) spout their opinions and it keeps the converation about the show going. I believe – and I could be wrong – that the only way that some “Charah” fans would ever bring themselves to actually STOP watching the show is if it go REALLY stupid (kind of like Heroes did after Season 1) – and I for one don’t think that it will get really stupid.

Will there be some elements that frustrate certain Chuckaholics? Sure. But if they stop watching the show because of some frustration (vs. stopping watching it because it just gets ridiculously stupid) then that’s there loss.

Bottom line is all this b.s. stuff that’s being fed to us is accomplishing what it’s meant to – keep us talking about the show. If they just said at the start of this thread “The Superman guy is going to guest star on Chuck” how many responses do you think there would be? Maybe 10. Throw in “a potential rival for affection for Sarah” and we have now what? Almost 100 responses. That’s what it’s all about.

So……… a little less wtf-ing and perhaps kicking back with a brew and a bag of chips (if no Xanax is available) might help take the edge off. 😉 😉

But seriously everybody, no matter what your feelings are – keep PROMOTING this show. It’s the only way it’s going to survive so that we can keep bickering back and forth about what we like/don’t like about it.

Keep on Chuckin’ everybody – and PEACE!!! Really, PEACE!! 🙂

    • Chuck Fan, I do know how you feel and it does get highly aggravating that a few of the fans are bent on bad mouthing the show.

I think we all agree that we want Charah to be loyal to each other regardless of their actual relationship status. I think where it all falls apart is that some fans don’t understand that there is a time and a place to whine and a time to support the show.

At a Chuck specific forum like this, fans have a lot of freedom to air their grievances which is healthy. What gets aggravating is when some people go all over the internet to general websites with no particular Chuck affiliation and complain about Chuck. That is a stab in the back to all the hard work we did to renew this show because then the general public reads those nasty angry stupid comments and that leads to new people not wanting to check out the show.

Further, when people start saying weird stuff like ‘We will see whether Chuck deserves a season 4’ or ‘Well I won’t be supporting Chuck anymore’…that is over the line and aggravating to those of us who worked really hard for the show. As if this show depends on one or two whiners who are not even good fans to begin with. That is arrogant and just clueless. (And you guys know exactly who you are that do this sort of stuff)

I think we all feel the same way about the Charah dynamic. It is just that some fans really are trashing the whole show and losing perspective.

It does start to feel like babysitting after a while, trying to explain to the same few fans over and over that a internet rumor using the word ‘potential’ is just an internet rumor.

Anyway I have had moments of losing my cool because I did not get involved with this wonderful show to babysit a handful of troublemakers. So I dig what you are saying. I think between those of us that actually do all the things to support the show and try not to rant all over the place on random internet sites about how the show stinks, we need to come up with a more positive and restrained way of talking these fans out of being so destructive to the show. I just am not sure how yet, lol. It is aggravating. I feel your pain.

  47. Hey Chuck Fan, if anybody out there is “hating” it’s you. I just read your little rant and found it amusing, and a little sad. It looks to me like you
are very, very angry about a lot of things and not just this blog. I think
you need to step back, take a deep breath, and take a good long look at yourself. Expressing a strong opinion is one thing, if it’s done in a civlilzed way. Telling people to “shut up” and cursing them out with computer
symbols is quite another. That is what’s really DISGRACEFUL. Grow up !

    • So sayeth the king of rants…

      • I just dont like when people talk negatively about stuff like Chuck. if ur going to promote the show in hopes of a greater viewer rating so that we get nine more eps and another season, than shouldn’t u be raving about all the POSITIVE aspects of the show and not the one NEGATIVE thing about the show which is all the annoying “love triangles” or now “love trapezoids.” Come on, seriously. We are not helping the show.
By the way, I find my ur comment amusing. Than agian all the curses in there I could have left out. Now is this more civilized for u?

  48. Larry1234, some great ideas, thanks! Shaw as an ifiltrator that when found out
needs to be eliminated. What an opportunity for Casy to get some payback for
the betrayal on his team at the end of season 2.

One other thing all, the angry, distasteful, personal rant in an earlier comment should remind us (including myself) that we are commenting about a
tv show and fictional characters, not real life. There are more important things going on right now in the real world and bad things are happening to
innocent people who are struggling to survive in some very tough economic
times. Let’s not take all of this too seriously and cool the personal rhetoric. I agree 100% what Rick Holy just noted in his comment.

    Thanks Rick.

    • Robert, I assume you are referring to your own rant? That would make sense for you to think before you post.

  49. “Let there be PEACE on earth, and let it begin with me……..” 🙂

Hey folks. Guess what. Chuck is coming back for 13 more episodes starting in March.

Can you believe it? A show with ratings which weren’t very good actually got renewed thanks to the efforts of a lot of devoted fans (US). This is actually GOOD news.

As Fred “Mr.” Rogers (may he rest in peace) would say, “It’s a BEAUTIFUL day in the neighborhood.”

So let’s put the guns back in their holsters!! Express our opinions – even STRONGLY – nothing wrong with that -but let’s not get nasty with each other – we’ll be setting a bad example for the children. 😉

  50. If I am still watching after the first 4 episodes I may have to skip the kid in the blue underware that is wishing for his first razor this Christmas–and yes he probably did ask for a razor in a letter to Santa—-I hope he ends up being a spy sent to infiltrate and either kill or kidnap Chuck. Maybe Chuck could pull a Morgan and the blue suit falls through a window on the 20th floor—as he falls he could say “Wrong Show” SPLAT—Although it would make Casey’s day if he put a couple of 9mm slugs in the guy’s head. I cannot understand a show that had to cut its budget spending more than it has to for stars-If we consider this guy a star-I don’t-The regulars are good enough to carry the show–I would rather see a series of episodes with Corina than a failed superman.
