NBC To Order 6 More Episodes of Chuck! (UPDATED)

Here we go again – more exclusives from unnamed sources. Josef Adalian (aka TVMoJoe) is reporting that NBC is about to order 6 more episodes of Chuck, bringing the season 3 episode count to 19, but whether the intent is for the show to return in January with extra episodes to take it through May or to keep to the original March airdate and run into summer is unknown. NBC and Warner Bros. had no comment for the story.

Joe is a reputable TV reporter, so for him to post this exclusive means he feels that his sources are reliable. Unfortunately, Michael Ausiello is on the same level and his exclusive about Chuck returning early hasn’t panned out so far. Take the info with a grain of salt, be happy that it sounds like NBC is feeling good about Chuck, and let’s ride this roller coaster until we get something on the record.

Updated 7:58PM CT: The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed is now confirming that Joe’s story is not only accurate but goes so far as to say that the additional 6 episode order is a done deal. These same sources predict that NBC will bring Chuck back in January and pair it with Heroes.

Updated 8:30PM CT: Variety is also confirming the additional episode order.

  1. The more Chuck the better!

An uninterrupted run starting in March is my preference.

Whatever happens Chuck fans will need to get the word out when the show does return.

  2. Chuck Me!

Ausiello is now reporting it (but, he’s only siting the sources that are listed above.)

More Chuck for season three is what we want to see. I would be willing to bet that the producers had a possible story arc built out incase the powers at NBC extended them. They probably planned on 22 eps, but I’ll bet they would be able to condense those stories from 9 eps to six.

Either way, it sounds like they have plans for “Chuck”. Trauma is most likely about to be benched when its run ends, and “Chuck” is coming in out of the pen in January.

    • Gambs, if you listened to our latest podcast you’d hear writer Phil Klemmer talking about how they’d handle additional episodes.

      • I finally managed to listen to the podcast. I was having problems over the past few days getting it to work.
It was probably the best episode to date. How could anyone not be excited about S3 after hearing that. I especially loved the interview with Phil. I know he didn’t give much away, but what he did say has got me shaking from my Chuck withdrawls.

I wish I could turn on the TV tonight and find all S3 episodes on in a row. OK I would be late for work tomorrow, and I would be dead tired but it would be so worth it.

  3. Whoo hoo!

    Hoo Whoo!

    Whoo!

    w00t!

Now can the season 2 DVD arrive in time for someone to watch all 22 episodes before season 3 starts?

    Did I say “whoo hoo?”

    Cheers,
    Gray.

  4. Woohoo!!!!!!!!
I’m so happy. Season 2 dvd release date and Chuck having more episodes; the best news I’ve had this week!

  5. Yes!!! This couldn’t get any better. Im so excited to see Chuck!

  6. I wonder if it is possible that Chuck will return in January since that is when the Season 2 DVD’s are being released……hmmmmm.

  7. writers will look for new love interests.

  8. This is so, if I may say, AWESOME. I am just happy to get an *almost* full season of Chuckles, even if it means waiting a bit. (Can’t wait for the Season 2 DVD release, since I must admit I went ahead and bought the UK released version last month – only to find that I can only watch them on my laptop since the “region codes” on my DVD players are unhackable.)

  9. The question is,
    will NBC re-run Season 2
    (or even both 1 & 2)
to catch up any new fans?

  10. MORE CHUCK!!!! WOOOHOOO I’m so happy I’m practically jumping around with joy. 🙂 In my opnion I hope Chuck starts after the Winter Olympics. I know its a long wait but it gives Chuck a HUGE promotional oppurtunity which means new fans, and a FOURTH SEASON. It also means that the eps wont be interrupted and we wont loose viewers. More Chuck is the key here people. I want that fourth season and I am sure rest you feel the same way. 🙂

  11. To quote the Captain, “That’s Awesome”

We got a Season 3. We got a Season 2 DVD release date. We got a back side pick-up (9 would have been great, but I’ll take 6). We just need a firm start date now.

When does the save Season 4 campaign begin???

    • The season 4 campaign already started. Just tell ur friends and beg NBC to give Chuck a huge promotional boost during the winter olympics. Also dont forget to support Subway. 😉

  12. WoW It’s really good new for Chuck’s fan. Chuck season 2 will on air start at Nov.09(Thailand cable network)… Yeah Chuck around the world.
    From Thailand

  13. The flip side of the story is also that NBC is pretty much cancelling Trauma. They will run the initial 13 eps and that will be it. Also making it likely in my opinion that Chuck will be back in January, which is good, but it also means a pre-empt by the olympics. I don’t think it is a coincidence that the DVD release came yesterday then this today.

  14. I don’t know why NBC insists on putting it on with Heroes. I think it would do better with the NBC comedies.

Thinking about the last podcast, I wonder if they’ll re-write the last few episodes of season 3 or treat the additional order as something seperate.

    • As Phil Klemmer stated in said podcast, they plan to treat additional episodes as a mini-season.

    • I think that the best way to kill a show is to jack it around all over the place. Chuck fans know Monday at 8/7C is Chuck. Guess they don’t want to mess with that. Just a guess. NBC needs to do the one thing they are still pretty decent at and start hyping the return of Chuck, if they intend to move it to January.

  15. Haven’t been posting comments here lately ’cause lets face it, staying hyped about something which isn’t happening until after winter is tough even for a fanboy like me. Hope this news will get all of us back up to speed with “recruiting” efforts- I plan to make the drinking buddies watch the season one episodes after football on Saturdays- they’re all at my house anyway gushing over my new 63″ plasma TV; the Blu-Ray views of Yvonne in the weinerlicious (SP?) getup have got to get them interested.

  16. Articulate Shnook

This is awesome news ! 19 episodes of the best show on TV. The DVD release date is still a head scratcher though. Why not release it for the holidays ?
    Is it January yet !

    • Agree with the DVD release date. 1/5/10 is so close to Christmas, it seems like a no-brainer to me to move the release date up about a month.

I figure WB wants DVD sales. I would expect they could sell more DVD’s of Chuck if it were available before Christmas, than after.

  17. That’s really great news.

  18. ausiello confirmed it too. ;D

  19. OMG! the news just keeps getting better and better!!! im SOOO excited! THIS IS AWESOME!! I already have my DVD pre-ordered!!

  20. Just wondering… I should perhaps not be asking this here, but who cares now anyway. The season 2 DVD topic has already been mentioned 😉

You don’t happen to know if the release date is the same in the rest of Europe, lets say Sweden for example..?
If the release date is January 5 in the UK, one would think it’s the same in Scandinavia, right? Or well, I obviously don’t or I wouldn’t be asking you people here. 🙂

  21. Even with the additional order, they need to wait until March in order to:

    1) Get the full promotional power of the Olympics behind Chuck.
    2) To keep any momentum going, not interupting the season after only a few episodes.

  22. Pinch me, I must be dreaming. I could have sworn I just read Chuck has another 6 episodes.

To quote a certain Captain we know: AWESOME!!!

This better not be somebody cruel yanking our chains again.

If they do pair it with Heroes, I hope they return it to the 8 pm slot and bump heroes up to 9.

  23. I wish I had a teeshirt with the phrase “Subway supports Chuck so I support Subway” across the front, using the Subway and Chuck logos for max impact. I’d wear it every time I walked into a Subway for my $5 footlong. If enough people had them, the franchise owners would notice. Even if they only saw a few each day, they’d think they were seeing them “all the time”. Word would spread to the suits at both NBC and Subway, who tend to be impressed by such shenannigans.

    • This is actually a good idea. Unluckily, in my country we don’t have Subways otherwise I’d immediately make a T-shirt like that

  24. I’ll believe it when I see an official confirmation from NBC/Warner Bros.
Until then, no. Rumors about this or that happening have been flying around
for weeks, changing every week. Let’s just wait and see…

    • I know how you feel. I was a little skeptical of the news myself. I still don’t believe everything they are saying. It’s so hard to seperate the fact from the rumour.
I do believe that the back 6 order is real. As for when the show starts, and what time/day it will be on, this is probably still speculation. To me if they were going to launch in late fall, that would be fine. But if you are going to wait until Jan, you might as well wait until March.

One thing that back order of 6 suggests is that NBC is really liking what they have seen in the can already. How many other shows get an order for additional episodes without seeing any ratings?

    • There was a twitter from the set by Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence). They announced the 6 extra episodes on the set. That’s official enough for me.
      Yippee.

  25. Mark Lawrence aka BigMike has twittered that the cast was informed on set yesterday so everyone can take those extra episodes to the bank. 😀

  26. yeah that has made my day go Chuck ha when will i b able to get boxset of season 3 i know am abit early but i cant wait:):)

  27. YES!!

Now, if it will only start airing SOONER than March 2010.

  28. this is exelent news, they should really relese season 2 dvd sooner i like the idea of before christmas it is alot more insentive for people to buy gifts that time of year makes alot more sence than january 5.

  29. What great news assuming arguendo that it is accurate! Chuck is one of the funniest cable shows on the market and its main characters are all outstanding. Why this great show has not received the recognition it deserves is a mystery to me. Maybe it needs to get prime time exposure and a couple of big-name sponsors who can pump some advertising money into the show to bring it to the attention of more viewers! Break – a – leg, Chuck cast. Your true fans won’t desert you just because of a little delay in your return!
