The overnight ratings for “Chuck vs. the Mask” are in and we see a drop this week of about 8% (in comparison, Castle dropped 17% from last week). Approximately 6.61 million viewers tuned in last night, and the show pulled a 2.2 in the 18-49 demo. Last week’s episode had about 6.72 million viewers and a 2.4 in the demo. Kind of a bummer to go into a 3-week hiatus on a low note, but expect a terrific, insightful article on Chuck’s ratings from a guest author shortly.
Post your conspiracy theories for the ratings drop below!
NOTE: A reminder that this thread is for discussion about the ratings, not a place to review the episode itself. There are several other posts where that is appropriate.
That doesn’t mean anything..The show’s awesome.
I don’t think the last two episodes were terribly strong, and I think the slight rating decrease is reflecting that. Personally, I felt that way about the middle stretch of season 2; my hope is that the ratings recover for the second half of the current 13 episode arc, since prior experience tends to indicate this is when the show gets really good.
Be glad for the 3 weeks for the fans to take a breath and recover. If we had an episode next week, we would be around a 2.0. It could be ugly coming back if NBC doesn’t put on a good push during the Olympics.
Are you kidding Edward? I think these last 2 weeks of Chuck are the best episodes since Chuck vs The Colonel. The character proggression has been incredible.
Are you kidding Edward? I think these last 2 weeks of Chuck are the best episodes since Chuck vs The Colonel. The character proggression has been incredible. This season is amazing.
Afraid not, Tim, but it’s just my opinion. I felt similarly about Chuck versus the Beefcake through Chuck versus the Predator, but ultimately those episodes set up an exceptionally strong conclusin to season 2. So I’m optimistic.
I agree with edward, i was just annoyed when the got you really hyped up about morgan/ellie really finding out his secret, and then… also, when chuck referred to himself before the spy stuff as ‘pathetic’ in the nacho sampler just didn’t seem right. Will stick with the show till the end though, regardless.
I swear if NBC doesn’t heavily promote Chuck during the olympics I will personally head over to their headquarters and give them a piece of my mind. I am tired of watching amazing shows like Chuck hit the dust while other shows that are so ridiculious like Gossip Girl and those reality tv crap make it. Its just not fair. I havn’t felt this strongly for a show since ever. I don’t know what it is about Chuck but it draws you in and never lets go. Please God don’t let Chuck die. URG! I’ll go crazy.
I look FWD to that ratings article.
Also Schwartz just tweeted that he and Fedak are going to answer questions today about episode 3.07, “To break the fever as it were”
Its simple they made the characters act out of their normal characters and jumped the shark. Expect lower figures when they come back.
Its a shame but they will never learn until the lights go out on set. I am not happy about that but it is what it is, sadly compulsorary family viewing night is now glee – oh god its dire.
I was an “O.C.” viewer for its full run even though the 1st season was the only good one. And in that I saw Schwartz and Co. run not only one but 2 big ships into the ground so I fear for this show and C/S. I consider myself quite a shipper but not one who needs them to together NOW! I also worry about putting the 2 romantic leads together too soon. I just want whatever angst and obstacles put before C & S to be plausible and original. Last night’s epi failed in many ways.
The one explanation/story line that comes to mind that can really help rehabilitate last night is perhaps Sarah is leary and is going rogue within Team Bartowski to expose Shaw.
Anyways the fact that I sat through the full run of O.C. should tell you that I’m in no way one to cut and run from “Chuck” b/c of one bad episode. I love the show too much. I pray its only a blip.
I’m beyond pissed. All the message boards and tweets, people threatening to quit the show to “send a message” to the writers? Now all those “fans” are getting massive pushback from the critics and other Chuck fans. I certainly hope those “fans” are happy.
I’m fine with criticism but last night’s total over-reaction to the episode does not help the show one bit. One episode does not make the whole series crap.
100% agree with you. These are the same fans that threatened to stop watching after the Cole and Jill arc last year but they are still here to complain this year. I don’t post much but I am a big fan of the show. I think the disgruntled people are the most vocal.
I’m glad the writers aren’t doing what the fans want them to. If they were, I probably would stop watching the show because it would be boring and predictable. I hope the Chuck writers keep doing what they are doing.
Agreed BMK. No show bats a 1.000 and Chuck has a very high batting average. Never will everyone be happy about every episode but to threaten a boycott for a show with a great batting average is fear mongering.
In the defense of that segment of the fan base, many of them haven’t seen much to like this entire season, but they’ve stuck with the show. For them, this episode is just the road apple on top of the steaming cow pie.
You can’t really fault them for their anger. The last 15 minutes of the show which covered the transition of PLIs to actual LIs was poorly done. There’s not really any excuse for that even if the whole setup ends up being nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
I’m one of those that is still here watching, even though I haven’t seem much I like this year.
If the rest of this year is as “good” as the 1st 7 episodes, then I will not have to worry about spending any money on a BluRay disc of Season 3.
Re-read my post again. Criticism is fine. What’s not fine is telling other fans to stop watching the show. What good does that do?
I mean, it got so ridiculous that even the critics felt the need to push back against these so-called “fans” who want to boycott the show.
If you will, go read what Sepinwall and Mo Ryan had to say about this “controversy”.
your right ill even go a step futher and say that the whole “spoilers” thing that this website promotes really hurts the ratings. No insult on CHUCKTV.NET but siriously people just look ahead and pick and choose what they want to watch and that hurts the demograpfic. In my personal opinion the spoilers are the reason CHUCK has seen such a sicnificant drop in viewers
To DT, i think the number of people who ‘just look ahead and pick and choose what they want to watch’ is very little. I think it’s once they have watched the episode, they decide to not watch the show.
To the people who are boycotting the show so that no one watches, thats pathetic, yes if you feel that watching the next episode is not worth it, than you are entitled to change the channel, but by no means should you try and destroy this show.
One thing that really bothers me about this obsession with rating figures, is that other markets are not included. USA is not the only country in the world, and it’s not the only country with loyal Chuck fans. You have Canada, UK and various European countries as well. Perhaps the current financing model, where shows are completely dependent on a national TV network, is outdated. There’s a large international market for TV shows, especially great quality shows such as Chuck.
True, but NBC doesn’t profit from the ratings anywhere outside of the United States. Just as CityTV doesn’t see profits from a show like Being Erica airing in the United States.
What’s the magic episode number for healthy syndication? Because we’re up to 54. Okay, now, grasp at this straw with me. NBC will make money from foreign syndication distribution even if it can’t make money now through foreign advertising. So that alone is a strong support for renewing for a fourth season. Right? Right? 😉
and p.s. Watch Being Erica on Soapnet. It’s a terrific show for an adult audience! And look for my neighbourhood! Yay!
Between 80 & 100 episodes I think.
Unfortunately, no matter the number, Chuck is not a good candidate for syndication. Most of the episodes must be seen in order. There are very few “stand alone” episodes.
Procedurals and sitcoms are good for syndication since they can be seen out of order, and if you miss one, its no big deal.
Profits from those other markets is certainly taken into account by Warner Bros when it comes to production budgets, etc, and the show isn’t completely dependent on a US network airing it. However, the US market is by far the largest for them, and without it the show probably wouldn’t be profitable to produce. The difference the international markets would make is that if NBC canceled it, WB might still consider producing it for another station such as their own network or SyFy. Those channels might bring in fewer viewers, but they might still provide enough income for the show to stay afloat when combined with international revenue.
I’m assuming the CBS comedies saw a bump? Super Bowl bounce like Chuck got last year.
With CBS having the Superbowl, chuck suffered. Just look at how CBS shows went they were all up. Maybe if it gets promoted during the Olympics the number will go up. I hope!
That episode was rubbish the relationships took over it again and now they have just given more fans a reason to leave. Didn’t they get the message that we didn’t want anymore love traingles or anything, obviously not. I feel so sorry for all the chuck fans who saved this show because it has been thrown back in their faces. If we are really lucky chuck won’t bomb and the best part is they annoy the fans who now have to wait 3 WEEKS.
i totally agree with you mike. i for one do not want to see anymore love triangles let alone this love square they got developing. These writers should be fired!!!
Actually it’s a pentagon and not a triangle or even a square =P
Wow, I knew some people would be annoyed last night, but to this extent? Seriously people why do we think the show should revolve around our thoughts or opinions? Yes the writers should consider what the fanbase wants, but giving us everything we want can be a bad thing. I’m 100% positive that if we fans were writing the show it would be an utter disaster. I think they’ve done an excellent job with the storyline this season. They are developing Chuck as a spy, the whole point of the show. We all knew the whole reltionship controversies would come, but I also think we know the outcome of those as well. Kristen Kreuk is only on the show for a couple more episodes. Plus if everyone remembers, Chuck punches Shaw over (I assume) Sarah. All I’m saying is I think many of us are jumping the gun when we should be waiting out the ride on an issue that is only part of the show.
ps: If the only reason you watch Chuck is because of Chuck and Sarah’s relationship, you have not fully realized or appreciated what the show really is.
I agree with you and i don’t mind either way if chuck stays with hannah or goes with sarah, but unless they have a massive turn around they have just produced an episode which is totally OOC. I understand the double meaning behind “i have a type”, but sarah jumps on the shaw bandwagon immediately and it takes chuck the best part of 20 episodes to get her to show him that much affection!!! Its just not believable at all i can deal with lou because he was new to the spy stuff, jill was the ex he never got over but hannah? Chuck said he loved sarah like 4 episodes ago and this happens. Not believable at all. I will be happy if chuck and sarah are finished (don’t want that but its actually a proper ending) because the way they have set this up i don’t think there is any going back for them now. I love chuck and the relationship stuff is getting on my nerves now. The rest of the ep was awesome and did everyone notice the power rangers reference that was super cool =)
Don’t get the problem. Sure this episode wasn’t the greatest so far and the season in general was not groundbreaking, but how can you guys just freak out before knowing whats going to happen next. Though I do agree that this episode was not well scripted but somehow it was predictable that C&S were starting to move into different directions.
I personally believe this season, that the writers have done a great job with spy part of the show, in chuck becoming a real spy.
However Chuck is not a show that is completely about one thing. I would have to say that from everything i’ve read the spy part of the show and romance part of the show are the most important to the majority of fans. Therfore the romance part has to be just as strong, and i don’t believe they have delivered on that so far this season.
I totally agreed with you : chck Fan#1.
well guys i just hope to see another season, i really like this show i had never missed an episode!! I really love to see chuck becoming a real spy, for real, but i didn’t feel that the last 2 episodes were strong enough!
