Our esteemed colleague Gray Jones, who has worked in the television industry for a number of years, decided to dust off his blog and address some fan concerns about the changes in the Chuck writers’ room, including the recent departure of Ali Adler, Matt Miller, and Phil Klemmer. Here’s an excerpt:
Let’s consider the landscape, particularly for a writer on one of the many shows in the bubble range. Even a critically acclaimed or well-rated show can be canceled or have its budget cut. In pilot season, writers take home stacks of pilot scripts, trying to get a sense of which shows they could aim for if they lose their job. When the time comes, they will have to think very quickly, because if they make the wrong decision, they could A) take a job on a show that only lasts a few episodes, or B) wait too long and miss out completely. If the latter happens, they may have to wait as much as a whole year for the next viable staffing season.
Not only that, but when a writer is offered a job on another show, there is a long line of other writers waiting to take that same position. There is usually a ticking clock on the offer, and if that clock runs out, the job instantly goes to someone else.

Just saw the NBC fall schedule. Bummer! What do we have
to do to escape the Monday night hellhole? Dig a tunnell?
I’m only in my late 20s so this might not mean much but I’ll shoot anyway. In my whole life I have never felt the need to support a show so much that I would plan my schedule accordingly just so I can watch it live. That is how much Chuck has affected me but I cannot and will not trade MNF for Chuck. What I will do however is leave my tv on in that channel while I go watch footbal with some friends or turn on another tv in my house and put it in that channel…Just an idea
I think it only matters if you’re a participant of the Nielson studies. If you’re an average American, they really have no way to track what you’re watching.
Be happy we are coming back at all!! Thank you NBC!!!
Mel, will the budgets that were in effect for Season 3 be restored for
Season 4? What are the current issues, if any, that had a hand in the license
fees for Season 4? Will season 4 be produced on a no cut production budget
or not? Please comment, thanks.
I love Chuck and my husband and I definitely plan our activities around the show. Let’s see more of the sidekicks at the BuyMore-just looking at them cracks me up!
