This week’s Friday Five comes from Chuck fan Paul B., and highlights the stellar non-verbal acting we see from Yvonne Strahovski on a regular basis.
There is no doubt that Chuck is compromised by his emotions; however, overall, one could make the argument the most emotional member of Team Bartowski of actually Sarah. Yvonne Strahovski has a remarkable talent of being able to sell the tone of any scene with her facial expressions. There is at least one in every episode, but here are five of my favorites:
- The Pilot, when Chuck helps out the ballerina – We all knew that this is when Sarah first got soft on Chuck; too bad it took three seasons for her to admit it to herself.
- Chuck vs. The Subway, when Sarah learns that Chuck has infiltrated the Ring base – The beams of pride emanating from her face seem to just shoot out of the screen.
- Chuck vs. The Best Friend, when Sarah believes Chuck has been killed – I don’t know about you, but the look of pure agony in her face gave me a mini heart attack.
- Chuck vs. The Lethal Weapon, when Chuck and Sarah are talking in the courtyard at the end – Sometimes the blankest of stares can say the most. Who needs dialog?
- Chuck vs. The Honeymooners, in the train compartment at the beginning – After so much disappointment and heartbreak, it was nice to see an expression of utter delight on her face. Boy, what a smile!
I wonder what Yvonne has left in her repertoire for this season?
Fantastic list. But I want to add one more (actually, 10 or 12, but one, for now). At the end of Best Friends, when Jeffster is playing Toto’s “Africe”, Chuck and Sarah hold hands. But Sarah’s eyes go to to their fingers for a moment with the most amazing look.
“OMG – what am I going to do now???” they say.
what about the the time colt dropped chuck in versus the first date in how she yelled noooo!
Agreed Joe!
I’d add the look in First Date after Chuck said “Of course I got it it’s me.” It was some kind of “turned on” look.
That look at the end of “Best Friend” and the feelings it represents for Sarah are the main reason I use to argue for the return of the “Suburbs” episode to the position in the canon that it was supposed to have–following “Best Friend”.
It makes it much more intriguing to see Sarah asking about Valentine’s Day plans after that look. Then the flash forward to “The Charleses/ Carmichaels/Bartowskis” only to end with another great Sarah look while she removes and tucks away her wedding ring.
Anyway, this is why we all love Yvonne.
Yep!!i only can agree, defenetly there are many moments when we can clearly see,the feelings Sarah had for Chuck since day 1.i can’t wait to see season 4!!Thanks for your work Mel!!By the way i’m from spain, and i’ve been watching Chuck since the beginin,i love the podcast, you really make me think about lots of posibilities, that Chuck could turn to.Take care!!
That scene from vs The Subway was one of my favorites. Casey revealing his pride in Chuck and complementing her at the same time, and her pleasure at hearing it was one of the crowning moments of heartwarming for me. 🙂 I adore Casey/Sarah moments anytime.
Chuck Vs The BreakUp – Sarah’s looks of abject joy turning to total devastation to somewhat awed as she looks back at him over her shoulder as Chuck pushes her away for Sarah’s own safety.
Yvonne went through an entire emotional journey in those closing scenes.
Amazing.
I agree. One of the best scenes of acting in the show’s history.
More than agreed!! I looooooooooooooove that scene. It was just so intense.
I would also grant an honourable mention to the scene pointed out be Joe (see above), when Jeffster is singing “Africa” and they hold hands.
The look of disapointment in Sarah´s face when Chuck fails to compliment her dress in “Vs. the break up” is priceless. Plus, she looks beautiful in salmon 😉
Although in reality she should be pissed at Bryce for that. . .it’s all Larkin’s fault! haha
The moment I saw this list I thought in that episode too. That was a great scene, like the one in the Imported Hard Salami, when she thinks he’s gonna kiss her and ends up breaking up with her…
I meant vs. the Truth
i’d replace the lethal weapon with the one from vs the breakup. so many emotions…resignation..heartbreak…acceptance(?) or from vs the truth. her face when chuck told her they need to fake breakup was like someone punche her in the tummy.
I agree about the “breakup” scene in vs. the Truth. In many (but not all) of the other scenes people have listed, her expressions merely reinforce the the story or emotion, they don’t necessarily TELL the story. Almost any decent actor can show amusement, pleasure, or anguish in their facial expressions, but not many can use changing expressions to tell the story without words. In this scene, you can see her go from anticipation to shock/disbelief to disappointment. It’s very similar at the end of vs. the Breakup.
The first one we’ve seen from season 4 for now was: ANNOYED!
Please be carful where you write S4 spoilers… :/
I think we’ve all seen the promo now fyi.
Chuck vs Lethal Weapon ending is great. Her faces makes me just wanna shout “SAY SOMETHING BACK!” at Sarah.
Chuck vs the Cougars aswell. The bit where Chuck is talking to Mark Ratner, Sarah walks past in slow-mo and smiles, and Chuck says “You know what Mark, just sometimes the nerd gets the girl.” Together with the music at that point, it’s such a awwww moment and you can tell, although Sarah can’t be with Chuck, that she wants to.
“The Breakup”, but prior to the courtyard scene at the end: She tells Cole Barker that she cares about Chuck and essentially admits that he’s more than just her cover boyfriend. This is the first such admission from her, and she seems shocked to have finally admitted it to someone, perhaps even to herself.
Also love the wedding scene on the beach in “the Ring” where, after signalling to Bryce that she’s not leaving with him, she surveys the scene of happy domesticity, inhales and seems invigorated by her choice. “The First Date” when Mr Colt drops Chuck off the rooftop rivals the bomb scene in “the Best Friend” in terms of the horror in her sense of loss.
Oops…got my eps wrong. The Cole Barker scene is from “the Lethal Weapon”. My comment about “the Breakup” was going to be about the Bogota flashback where a look of sadistic glee crosses her face just before she’s about to shoot the guy holding Bryce. We see how much she once relished the adreneline rush and adventure, compared to the way she had merely come to tolerate it once Chuck changed her outlook.
I have some other examples: Chuck vs the suburbs, Sarah’s face at the end showing that she may actually like to have a family… and a dog!
Chuck vs the truth, the anguish face when she has to lie to Chuck saying that their relation is not going anywhere. And the final minutes of that episode when Chuck leaves her and goes to meet with Lou.
Actually, another great look was when she was cooking breakfast for Chuck. When she was cooking and eating fruit and feeding the dog… I suddenly saw the future for both of them.
… and the contrast with the final scene where she reluctantly removes the wedding ring from her finger.
Not so much a look exactly, but in Chuck vs. the Last Exam, on their second stakeout, when Chuck says they can still be together. She’s got binoculars over her eyes but we all know the only reason she’s not moving those binoculars is because she’s trying to hide her emotions from Chuck.
i definitely agree with you, Sam C! gotta give it to Yvonne for providing so much life to Sarah in the series… talk about looks that could kill!
My favourite is the “My middle name is Lisa.” scene from Wookiee, where Sarah has one line in the entire scene but you can completely see everything she’s feeling. A beautifully acted and directed scene. 🙂
I loved that scene! It meant so much to her that Chuck realized she didn’t like olives. Thanks for the reminder.
Was it olives or pickles?. . .I don’t usually see Olives on hamburgers.
No pickles on the burger, no olives on the pizza.
Actually, no olives on the pizza (“Wookie”) but extra pickles on the cheeseburger (“Cougars”).
And it comes back to me. Thanks Doc.
plus a lot of chocolate croissants, some Rocky Road icecream, some noodles from the Bamboo Dragon, definetely no corn dog and a bit of frozen yoghurt. Oh yeah and blueberries but only fresh from the market and with cream.
Sorry for the multiple comments :S – they just keep coming to me. Last one, I promise.
The best one ever – ending of Chuck vs. the American Hero. Her smile of relief at learning Casey shot the Ring double agent on Chuck’s Red Test. She gives him a very sincere thank you, because she really needed to hear that, even though she’d already made up here mind between Chuck and Shaw.
I loved that one too, not only did she need to hear it, but also to assure Casey she’d never betray him. Lovely little scene between them.
yeah, in the scene, she really needed to hear it just to ‘seal the deal’ about her decision between chuck and shaw.
i got to say at the ending where carina gave her the flash drive and she watched chuck say the three words…. and versus the pink slip at the train station…truly heart braking
I agree. So heartbreaking. You cry with her. I don’t think that scene would have worked with many other actresses.
Also a heartbreaking scene where you cry with and for her: Chuck versus Marlin. Rooftop scene. Her tearing up=me tearing up
I know!!! I’m tearing up just thinking about the scene now!!!!
I was crying with her, too! poor Sarah so torn with loving chuck and having to force herself to bury her feelings deep down inside because of work.
Mel you’re absolutely correct in mentioning Yvonne’s remarkable talent of being able to sell the tone of any scene just with her facial expressions.
I love all the ones mentioned so far and another one that stood out for me was in Chuck vs the Suburbs. The scene where when talking to the guy neighbours, Chuck points out Sarah as being his wife. The look she gave him was so sweet.
However the 2 scenes that got to me the most and the ones I immediately thought of when I read the article are in Chuck vs. The Best Friend, when Sarah believes Chuck has been killed and Chuck vs. The Breakup, end courtyard scene. Yvonne is a fantastic actress and seriously in those two scenes she put on a clinic.
Great Friday Five!
OMG, I love all those scenes, too! Yvonne is truly great with her facial expressions, I can’t think of a single scene that wouldn’t count as part of this list…
I have to say that in Tooth, when she is talking to Dr. Dreyfus and finally admits, out loud, that she loves Chuck, and then sees Casey-wow! Love that scene!
Beautiful scene and yes, one of my favs too.
Definitely a great scene although the one I like is at the end. After Chuck’s visit to the doctor he comes back home and Sarah blurts out that she loves him. He doesn’t have the heart to tell her about the doctor’s warning and says he’s OK. She gives him a big hug and just has a look of complete happiness on her face as she hold him.
excellent scene!!
I could never forget the look in Sarah’s face, when she admit it!!
love it!
All those non-verbal scenes were great. Now it would be nice if Sarah would share what she was feeling during some of those times with Chuck now that they are together. Of course we could imagine that they had talked about some of those times during their train ride from Paris, but still it would be nice to have some look backs during season 4.
Yvonne is a great, very talented actress. I love all of the above listed scenes. Especially I loved the scene, when C/S first meet, and he is chewing on the phone, the “so cute” look she gives him.
Another scene that stood out for me was Break-up scene, when Sarah can’t take the shot. You know exactly what that character is thinking.
In Seduction, when Chuck kisses the Black Widow in the elevator or in Subway when she learns about Chucks condition.
Also you have to watch scenes, where she isn’t supposed to be in the middle, like when Morgan and Chuck or Ellie and Chuck are talking, she always has the right look for a person that listens to a conversation.
My favorite “not in the conversation” look from Sarah is in Truth when Awesome is talking to Chuck using the back on the bike analogy for closing the deal with Sarah. The camera is focused on the two guys, but Sarah slowly turns around in the background with an amazing “can’t believe he’s saying that” expression on her face.
Every time I watch that scene I always crack up, watching her in the background! She is truly a fantastic actress!
yea Mike, I have to say that is one of my favorate Sarah “not in the converation” moments as well.
Rod
Now you made me remember… the look Sarah gives to Chuck and Bryce, after the figth with Tommy and his guys, when the fireman looks at Bryce and she says “It’s ok, he’s one of ours” and then she turns back and sees Chuck and Bryce, just looking at her and she goes away… I find it hilarious!
Great list there, if you’d asked me to come up with a list of my own I would probably have picked the same ones.
My personal favorite of the ones you picked is Chuck vs The Honeymooners, like you say, the smile on Sarah’s face is just amazing, and probably the happiest I’ve seen in all 3 seasons. Off topic… while I wrote this paragraph the song from the beginning of the episode started playing on my iTunes playlist – coincidence or what? 🙂
Another has to be where Sarah thinks Chuck died in the car, those 5 seconds or so of shock and then relief are excellently acted – I should add that a hug wouldn’t have gone amiss at the end of the scene!
What does Yvonne have left in her repertoire? I couldn’t say exactly, but she is a very talented actress, and there’ll be much more I can guarantee.
yes, that super-scared look on Sarah’s face when the Nerd Herd car exploded, thinking that Chuck was still in the car.
Col. Master of the Grunts Casey had a great look in that scene too. . .but I guess we should be talking about Ms. Walker rather than Casey ey?
The looks that come to mind for me are from “Chuck vs. The First Date.”
The first is in the 1st scene at the Orange Orange when Sarah finally relents and agrees to go out on a real date with Chuck, and he says “Really?” to which she replies “Mm-hmm…” The look on Yvonne’s face at that moment seems to perfectly convey a mix between apprehension and excitement over Sarah finally getting an opportunity to express how she really feels about Chuck.
The second was in the restaurant scene where Chuck talks about how Morgan has never had a hard time believing that a guy like Chuck could be dating a girl like Sarah, but stops short of actually saying it. Then, when Chuck says “You know, you…” Sarah replies “What about me?” with a subtly playful expression, as if daring him to open up so she can feel safe about doing so herself.
I think that is my favorite scene of hers – she acts like she is totally unaware of how beautiful she is and that whatever Chuck is going to tell her – she is clueless to the truth of it. She honestly shows that she is not so full of herself by her beauty or her abilities. I think that is why she compliments the character of Chuck so perfectly – because he is also totally clueless as to his own abilities.
One other scene where Sarah conveys volumes is at the end of vs. the Nemesis and they are facing down the “bomb” that is Bryce and after the kiss ends with no bang – her confusion and embarrassment “uncomfortable” betray her true feelings and Chuck at the gut level knows it!!
There are truly so many “looks” and “expressions” that giver her away.
Excellent Friday Five!!
My favorite is in Chuck vs. the Truth when Chuck, Sarah and Casey have been dosed with a lethal sodium pentothal cocktail by the evil gymnast dude and just before they crash into his lair Chuck turns to Sarah and says “God, you’re so pretty”. The series of emotions Yvonne portrays moving across her character’s face in a span of maybe seven seconds are stunning. Remember, as we find out at the end of the episode, Sarah has been trained to resist the effects of truth serums, so Yvonne has to get across a complex melange of emotional turbulence and selective repression of the same. Watching the scene on my obscenely large TV where the heads are the size of a spare tire I really see the amazing thespian abilities possessed by this woman.
What I wonder is whether this is a learned skill or an innate ability? We know Yvonne attended a prestigious acting school in Australia; can such a technique really be taught to anyone off of the street or is there a certain degree of innate empathic ability (which one is presumably born with)as a prerequisite?
Everyone go get your S1 Blueray Discs (I won mine from Chucktv.net just for participating in these comments! Thanks Mel & Liz!) and review this scene so you can tell me whether or not I’m just imagining things.
And Casey your jaw was chiseled by Michaelangelo himself!
A few good ones:
– At the end of “Suburbs,” Sarah has a look of regret, but she gives a tiny smile just as she’s about to pocket the wedding ring.
– At the end of “Honeymooners,” Sarah’s look of freewheeling joy is gone and replaced with comfortable satisfaction.
– At the end of “Subway,” just as Shaw is about to close the door of the truck, Sarah has a look on her face that is a combination of hatred and betrayal, while she gives a barely perceptible head shake.
I kind of wish that we could do one of these for Chuck. Zac Levi is also very expressive, but because his character says a lot more stuff, we don’t spend as much time deciphering his facial expressions.
Yeah about that Subway bit, she’s like ”I can’t believe you’re doing this, and how I’m hating myself for actually falling for a monster like you” There were tears in her eyes as well. Gosh I love Yvonne, I love them all.
Actually, I can think of a really good non-verbal acting moment for Zac that is also by far one of my most–if not my #1–favorite Chuck/Sarah moment prior to them getting together.
It’s right near the end of “Chuck Versus Tom Sawyer,” when Sarah explains to Chuck that the Stanford diploma is real and is the result of her and Casey pulling strings so that Chuck’s last 12 credits were fulfilled by way of his work with them. Then, Sarah points out to Chuck where the missile satellite is burning up in atmospheric reentry on the edge of the horizon, looking like a shooting star, and says “Make a wish…it’s yours.”
Chuck’s expression as he looks up at the “shooting star” seems uncertain for a moment, then without saying a word, he looks at Sarah for a moment, then looks back up at the sky with a more calm and assured expression on his face…and you know exactly what–or more appropriately, who–he was wishing for. Yvonne and Zac’s acting, coupled with the song “Sleepdriving” by Grand Archives playing in the background, makes for a subtle but in my opinion very powerful moment.
I like the look on her face in Chuck versus the Colonel when Chuck gets up and tells her to wait right there she looks so happy.
One I think is really good and telling is in the Ring when she tells Chuck she is leaving in the morning with Bryce and he says thanks for coming to the wedding it’s good for the cover. That look she gives when he is walking away is killer
how about in that same episode when he comes from getting the intersect cube and she is looking for the knives in the gifts and chuck walks in to stop chevy chase from cutting the cake.
her face when she says “Chuck” you can see that she loves him
how about the scene in season 2 episode 8 when she tries to teach Chuck how to get ready for a date with Jill.
when she tells him if he can’t look at Jill’s eyes look at her lips and she can’t look at his eyes…
totally agree with you there Paul B. My favourite will always be no. 3 when sarah thinks Chuck has died. She just explodes into tears and her face just shows pure agony. That made my heart wrench! Definitely the most emotionally involved i have felt whilst watching television. Plus if anyone had not already worked out by then, it showed just how much Sarah cares about Chuck.
In vs the Merlin. With Sarah gazing longingly at Chuck, Ellie, and Devon, wishing for a family of her own to go home to. That was sad but kind of foreshadowing as she,Casey, and Morgan are pretty much adopted members of the Bartowski Clan now.
The top drama for me is the Break-Up ending. That scene she was amazing, it’s visible her effort to not cry and the anguish since she can’t tell him how she feels. The Lethal Weapon ending is great as well … but the break-up even i had a knot in my throat.
top “comedy” or simply joy would be the Honeymooner initial scene (and the ending when they agree about not quiting the spy life). Also another one that nobody mentioned but i think its really nice how she reacts is after Chuck is “forced” to kiss her by Montgomery .. the way she excuses herself to “fix her lipstick” is priceless.
Overall i think she portraits the “Soft but with hard shell” woman perfectly. She hides her emotions well, but still give a hint of what she’s trully feeling.
Indeed! Great scene, gotta love how the agent of love Montgomery knew that Sarah loves Chuck. “The Lady Doeth Protest Too Much”
All excellent choices. Chuck fans may be the most perceptive in the TV fandom realm.
Anyway, a couple more come to mind.
Sarah’s look of absolute horror in Seduction when Sasha is all over Chuck in the elevator and kissing him. Chuck sees it, too, because he has at least one eye open.
As has been discussed, Cougars was a painful and uncomfortable episode for Sarah. She reluctantly allows Chuck to ask her a question about her past, mentioning “he’s earned it,” but he respectfully declines, adding, “No thanks. I don’t need to know who you were, because as much as you don’t think so, I know exactly who you are – a girl I’d like to share a cheese burger with.”
Her beaming smirk screamed she recognized again how special Chuck is. Her admiration and esteem for him in that scene jumped up exponentially, another indication of his respect and level of sensitivity for her. It also allowed her a brief relief sigh moment and settle in to a comfort level.
Non-verbal. vs. The Alma Mater. Sarah walks out of CB’s room having just watched the video of Bryce and Professor. Tears in her eyes and alone.. she shows anguish, turmoil, sadness, love, determination, dedication. It is all there… She has just realized that her ‘dead’ ex-boyfriend Bryce was probably not rogue and has been protecting the current love of her life for a lot longer than she has from those that would take advantage of all that makes him ‘special’ while understanding the pain that all of this has caused Chuck. An emotional roller coaster, and you can just sit in your chair and watch it! What a thrill ride!
I liked her facial expressions during the comedic scene in Chuck vs. The Nacho Sampler when the bad guys tie Casey, Sarah and Chuck and Casey directs Chuck to use the laser pen to break his cuffs. Her expression just magnified to the silliness of the scene. It seemed to say: quit fooling around and get us out of here, it’s no big deal you may fry Casey’s nads in the process!! Hee, hee!!
I can’t get through that scene without breaking into hilarious laughter. All three did excellent in that one.
One of my all time favorites “The Honeymoon Train” was a great episode. Sarah did some great slapstick comedy with her Texas drawl–the final scene in bed with the music playing and Chuck and Sarah snuggling was great. I appreciatted Sarah being in boxers rather than the overused panties. A very sweet, romantic scene.
In addition to all of the above, one of my most favourites is in American Hero, after the rescue, in the Castle, Chuck asked after Shaw and then once again proclaimed his love, Sarah was receptive but explained she had commitments not just to Shaw. Chuck asked her not to say anything but to meet him at the train station and they would go away together and quit the spy life, Yvonne was able to express what was going through Sarah’s mind and how she was looking forward to a future like that with Chuck (with a dreamy look and a secretive little smile) and that she had decided there and then to go away with Chuck even when she thought he killed the mole i.e. before Casey showed up to confess while she was packing.
Pure horror when it looks like Chuck is blown up in the car & pure joy cooking breakfast, wow what acting. That breakfast is my favorite on Youtube
Guys.
You’re just making me want to watch every one of those episodes. Again.
Dammit. 🙂
You don’t watch all of the seasons. . .then start over again in a constant cycle? ; )
I remember another one: in Chuck vs. the seduction when Montgomery and Sarah are explaining Chuck who is the Black Widow, and why she is called like that… Sarah has a mixed expression like: “upps, he just realized how dangerous this woman is and yes, I am worried too, Chuck…”
And in vs. the other guy, the way she delivered the “I appreciated the tank…” quote was very funny.
The whole scene where Montgomery is asking Chuck if he doesn’t think that Agent Walker is attractive and if he really thinks that he would have a chance to date her. And then he forces him to kiss her! 🙂
The mimic and dialogue from every actor in this scene is so great and funny!
This scene is a great example of her non-verbal skill. The dialogue between Roan and Chuck about why Chuck won’t kiss her is acccompanied by a look on her face, the disappointed look of a girl who wants to be kissed by a guy who won’t make the move.
Yes! The tank!. . .Also I think the looks that she’s giving Chuck says that she doesn’t trust Shaw anymore but she doesn’t want to really admit it.
All great choices I will probably have to view Chuck season 1 to season 3 from beginning to end. Majority of my fav’s were already listed but I do have one. Chuck vs The Other Guy when Shaw is exlaining to Sarah why he has to kill her then her face gives this glimmer of hope because she sees Chuck. Aww that scene tugs at my heart every time. The same episode at the end when she realizes Shaw is dead and Chuck is explaining he had to in order to save her aww it all went uphill from there lol. Yvonne is one heck of an actress!
She also has this look of confused disappointment when Chuck says that won’t kill Shaw.
I took the look that she had as. . .”he has a gun?. . .” To me it seemed that Sarah still didn’t want Chuck to have to kill anyone since she had fallen in love with Chuck Bartowski. . .not Col. John Casey. It was only when Chuck absolutely had to kill Shaw because he was protecting Sarah and himself that it turned into the righteous kill.
In “The First Date” when she glances sideways at Mr. Colt and say’ “And why would we do that?”
And all those times someone opens the door for her entrance and she non verbally says how happy she is to see them with that huge “girl next door” smile!
How about in colonol when Sarah is about to take a shower and Chuck gives the line “I guess that whole out of site thing doesn’t really apply right now.” Her expressions say of course I want you in here. A perfect scene on an amazing episode. Yvonne absolutely nailed it as well as Zach.
Great topic! I enjoy the contrast of Chuck always needing to verbalize his feelings while Sarah says very little but instead communicates her emotions through her facial expressions and body language. It has been effective tool for getting viewers to invest in the Chuck-Sarah relationship, and Yvonne’s ability to let us know exactly what Sarah is feeling without dialogue is nothing short of brilliant.
Three favorites I haven’t seen on this thread:
* In “Chuck vs Santa Clause”: We can see how much it means to Sarah when Chuck gives her his mom’s charm bracelet, even though she is just his “cover” girlfriend.
* Later in “Chuck vs Santa Clause”: After killing the Fulcrum agent in the christmas tree lot, we see Sarah struggle with her emotions for shooting the unarmed man in order to protect Chuck from future harm. While at the same time, managing to pull herself together enough to lie to Chuck to protect him from the truth of what she felt she had to do.
* In “Chuck vs the Three Words”: We get to see Sarah’s rapidly changing emotions as she views the video that Karina gave her of Chuck explaining why he didn’t go with her in Prague.
Just rewatching the Pilot, and I love her reaction when Chuck shows up to pick her up for their date. She is on the phone to her boss, saying what should she do if Chuck runs. She opens the door to see Chuck standing there with a bunch of flowers on a big grin on his face, and her boss says to kill him. It makes me laugh coz she has the same “Drop the phone” reaction that Chuck had when he first saw her at the Buy More.
Also love watching her reactions as they are talking over dinner. Pure gold right there.
Paul B. made a great list, and i can’t agree more with him.
However, i believe that the episode “Chuck vs the Oter Guy” isn’t mentioned here enough.
I would like to point out two scenes:
First, when Sarah and Chuck talk in his house, when she finally says YES. Although there are words involved her *the YES*, you can see here finally accepting the fact that she loves him, and feels comfortable about it.
Second, the last scene, when she is in bed, and the two talk. And when she says “you saved me”, and then smiles so lovely :). I think it’s her first in a row smile, which is more represented in Honeymooners later on.
I loved, in The Subway, The farmers market ‘blueberries” Scene, Yvonne really sold that she really loved Chuck. My second was in the “living dead” when Chuck was upset about not knowing where his dad went, and Sarah said” I do’ the look of pure joy and beaming pride. However Yvonne is not alone, the look on Casey’s face when he missed the picture of chuck in the First Date, and when he saw Sarah’s face in the “Best Friend after the car blew up. Finally one Casey grunt is worth a thousand words when added to his expressions.
The final scene of Chuck vs The Breakup was the point where I became addicted to the show. The heartbreak that range of emotions from heartbreak to acceptance that Yvonne showed were amazing. Zach did an great job also when they both looked at each other, knocked on the door, and put on fake smiles. It was beautifully acted and directed. Before this scene I watched causually along with several other shows. Within a month of this episode I was following this site’s forum and devouring any fanfiction that I could find
I love the when Chuck fake broke up with Sarah at the end of Chuck vs the Truth. Yvonne perfectly displayed a combination of dissapointment and acknowledgement that she really couldn’t date Chuck for real. You could almost see Sarah fighting between the agent side and the personal side.
I also love her face after Chuck says ILY at the end of American Hero. She was so stunned, shocked, and in love.
Wow! So many comments, obviously a popular topic. I totally agree with Best Friend but the whole scene has to be included. I think the real emotion is expressed when Sarah realises Chuck is alive. The relief, shock and amazement all mixed together along with an almost palpable feeling of restraint stopping her from running and hugging him. I can watch that scene over and over and still have the urge to shout ‘hug him’ at the TV.
Great job at coming up with the top 5. There are so many great scenes, I agree with every one mentioned in these comments, I could never have reduced it to just 5.
If you are sufficiently in love with each other to the point where your eyes sparkle when you look at each other, you will not notice what colour your clothes are, and neither will anyone else.
This comment of mine was tagged onto a post by someone worrying about which colour clothes to wear to an event. The original comment has been deleted but my tag lives on! Hence the lack of context.
Thank you for explaining that one! It seemed a little random, albeit very true.
Love all those scene, but my favorite has to be when Chuck tells Sarah he cant move in with her because he is crazy about her, right when he says that when he gets the intersect out of his head he is going to be with the girl he loves, that look she gives when her back is turned away from him is my favorite by far.
This scene alone, for me captures Sarah perfectly, I think Yvonne is an amazing actress and is definitely one of the few actresses out there who could have pulled off this scene.
P.s sorry i cant remember the name of the episode but im sure you guys know which one im talking about 😉
“the Lethal Weapon” s.2/ep.16
Just finished watching the first season again. And there are a few other looks that kill:
helicopter: funeral scene, when she sees Chuck is there
wookie: when she is captured and tells wookie: “how do you like your new look” or something like that
truth: when she tells the “truth” and when she sees C and Lou in coffee (last scene
salami: when she starts to cry in the buy more
got another one: cougars: when chuck asks Heather about San Diego— now that look really could have killed him
thats the one thanks 🙂
ok, you guys rock! Awesome comments. Now, my fave looks are:
1. In chuck vs. the seduction, at the end when sarah is thanking chuck for saving her life, and he tells her that if she has ever seen someone do something like that even if he’s just an asset!!!, and she looks at him like she wants to jump right at him!
2. In chuck vs. he cougars, when he tells her that she’s the girl that he wants to share a cheesebuger with… she looks so so so happy and pleased that he told her that.
3. In chuck vs. the sandworm, when she looks at the garbage that chuck has in hes room, and finds out that he found out about the bug at the picture that she gave to her, she looks so disspointed at herself and sad that chuck trusts her but she let him down.
4. OMG, the look that sarah gave to chuck in vs. the ex, when he tells her that Jill kissed him without all the spy lies! she looks soooo freaking pissed! lol
