Televisionary Previews Chuck Season Premiere

Jace at Televisionary already has his advance review of the Chuck season premiere posted, and he’s going on record saying, “it’s one of the most lighthearted and funny episodes of the series in quite some time.” Here’s more from Jace:

I had the chance last night to watch “Chuck Versus the Anniversary,” written by Chris Fedak and directed by Robert Duncan McNeill, and was struck by how much humor and whimsy–and action–they managed to shoehorn into those forty-odd minutes. As I tweeted last night about the episode, “Chuck premiere: sexting, skydiving, Seinfeld references, (Harry Dean) Stanton? Sensational. Very fun opener.”

Which it is. Without giving too much away, I can say that Chuck and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) are still very much a couple, though with some new obstacles to overcome, Chuck’s promise to Ellie to leave the spy life behind stands (or, well, sort of, anyway), and divergent plotlines end up beautifully intersecting before the end of the hour, when Chuck is forced to make a choice that could have some consequences for his current covert mission: tracking down his mother.

It’s the above task that shadows the action unfolding within “Chuck Versus the Anniversary,” but the episode is not all doom and gloom. In fact, it’s one of the most lighthearted and funny episodes of the series in quite some time, as executive producer Chris Fedak constructs an episode that equal parts Get Smart homage, gadget-influenced romantic comedy, and a high-flying, globe-hopping espionage drama that’s set against such diverse cities as Hong Kong, Moscow, and, well, Burbank. (The gang’s jet-setting lifestyle is visualized through a hilarious map gag that makes use of the credit sequence’s little stick figure man.)

  1. I love the idea of the map with the little guy from the opening sequence!

And Seinfeld references??? Could it get any better? I just wonder what those will be… “no soup for you”? “master of my domain”? “the contest”?!? “shrinkage”?!? “not that there’s anything wrong with that”? “double dipping”? OMG I am so curious!

I am also glad to read it is a light hearted episode.

  2. I. CANNOT. WAIT. !!!

  3. Sounds…. well sounds awesome!!!
    Can’t wait for monday…
Just feel a little weird because I can’t imagine how Chuck and Sarah will be sexting, sound kind of wrong 😀

  4. I hope the Chuck/Sarah lies end soon. Looks like a great kick off episode.

  5. This sounds like it’s going to be insanely epic and won’t let up till the finale from what I’ve been hearing. Viva la CHUCK. Four days more people. Mark your calendars and maybe get something to snack on like Subway. 😉

  6. LUCKY BUTT! I wish I could watch ti early but NO ughhh….cannot wait sexting…hmmm…never pictured them that type of couple…we’ll see then or it could be morgan or ellie and awesome…can’t wait to see Awesome Jr.!!!!!!!!

  7. I am exited about monday’s season premiere. I mean Linda Hamilton, come on, it’s huge. Then just imagine Chuck and Sarah sexting with the CIA and NSA monitoring their comm. Especially with HQ at the Buy More for General Beckman and the gang. I’ll admit that I expect to see a picture of them sexting in a locker at the Buy More this season.

I fully expect this episode to set up the entire season for Chuck, Sarah, Casey and Morgan. I guess we will learn more about the other in the following weeks.
