“I can’t believe how fast they rebuilt it.â€
Let’s talk about sexting. Well, let’s start by talking about sexting, and then work our way backwards and forwards. By the end, we’ll all have learned something important about ourselves, and (hopefully) I will have figured out what I think of this episode. (That’s not a very auspicious way to start my first recap for chucktv.net, is it?)
The sexting joke was silly the first time Morgan brought it up. Yes, some people text their phone sex, instead of doing it the old-fashioned way with tin cans and string. (Kids these days.) It was sillier the second time, when Chuck and Sarah talked about it awkwardly. And it hit the rock bottom of the silly-canyon when Sarah started taking mock-sexy pictures of herself on the airplane. But once she and Casey were tied to the chair, and the sexting joke came up again, Casey’s punchline suddenly made it all funny: “What? What does that even mean?â€
That’s a lot of build-up for very little payoff. I wonder if this episode originally came in at just 30 minutes, and the writers decided they needed to extend a few scenes: the sexting, the scene where Chuck decided to decrypt then download (instead of the other way around), the repo man gag. All played a bit too long for me. On the other hand, the quick recap of Chuck’s interviews was hilarious and perfectly timed.
But that’s not why we’re here. Why are we here? Linda Hamilton! The internet rumor made flesh! Chuck’s search for his mother is the new governing principle of Chuck’s return to the spy games (and lying to Ellie again). He and Morgan spent $43,000 on a worldwide globetrot only to wind up in an empty room in LA, unemployed, car-less, and only one takeout menu closer to the truth.
Lucky for them, the CIA has repurposed the BuyMore. I’m not sure how I feel about this—it comes back to the issue of build-up vs. payoff. I really thought the BuyMore was finally over at the end of Season Three. I really thought Chuck lying to Ellie would stop being a thing. But now we’ve re-set: Chuck works at the BuyMore as a cover for being a special agent, and he’s lying to Ellie about his true employment. Ahem. Again.
Some changes have stayed the same, though. Chuck and Sarah are still going strong (although their timeline seems a bit confused); Casey is still a grump with a heart of gold; Morgan is still hilarious, and still a spy-sidekick. A spykick. And some things are really new changes: Ellie is (finally!) pregnant, and Chuck seems a bit more bittersweet than usual. The loss of Scott Bakula is not to be forgotten, and Chuck’s search for his mom is going to be emotionally fraught for both him and Ellie when she eventually finds out. Oh, and the BuyMore has a slide! I hope we see more of the slide.
And more Linda Hamilton, of course. She’s a kick-ass feminist icon of my misspent youth, and I’m getting a real Irina Derevko vibe so far.
Bytes:
- Chuck: “This is not the opening of a TV show. This is real life.â€
- Morgan: “Me and you. Real spies…Sunblock! We need sunblock!â€
- Sarah: “By the way, good idea to bring the chutes.â€
Casey: “Thank you.â€
- Morgan: “Sexting. It’s short for sex-writing.â€
- Chuck: “I’m 100% snatchable.â€
- Chuck: “We’re going to Russia.â€
Morgan: “Okay. I’m going to have to sell my Millenium Falcon.â€
- Chuck: “The plan was for me to be Carmichael, and you to be Sven, my mute assistant.â€
And Pieces:
- I loved the low-budget old-fashioned map montage.
- Harry Dean Stanton! Dolph Lundgren!
- The soundtrack was great, as always. It was nice not to hear the Ring theme, either.
- The shootout in Moscow was beautifully shot.
When push comes to shove, this is still a great show. So they haven’t completely re-invented themselves. Is that necessarily a bad thing?
Three out of four Sarah Connors
(By the way, you might be wondering who I am. I’m Josie Kafka, and I review Chuck, Fringe, and The Vampire Diaries for billiedoux.com. And now, thanks to the goodwill of the chucktv masterminds, I’m recapping Chuck here, too!)
Love the sexting bit. It showed the strain that the long distance was putting on their relationship. For Sarah to ever think about sexting has to mean she must really miss her Chuck. Plus SOS Skin on Skin come on that’s really funny.
In fact I thought this episode was great and was firing on all cylinders. Finally the Buymore actually makes sense.
I love this show when it is silly and tonight was no exception. Great job Show. Season 4 looks amazing.
Same here, I don’t know why you didn’t like the sexting scenes. For me it was very, very funny. When Morgan started taking pictures was like ‘ok’ but then the talk with Sarah and the sexting while they are kidnapped are great.
For me too. This was one of the best episodes, was really funny and a had a lot of funny scenes that made it worthy!
I think instead of the Buymore we should start calling it the Spymore.
I have no complaints about the episode at all. I didn’t think the Greta / Repoman scenes added much, but I still enjoyed them.
I wonder if there were more scenes with those characters that got cut just for time.
I have no complaints about this episode and I thought the sexting between Sarah and Morgan as Chuck was absolutely hilarious. Honestly, I’m just glad we have a season 4 so I’m going to enjoy every bit of it and so far I’m loving it!
I concur with rac2873. While from a serious perspective the “sexting” could have been taken as a facepalm moment it worked out beautifully the moment Sarah brought it up in Castle, you knew it was bound for a bigger pun. I’m really getting that first season vibe along with a more mature storyline where Chuck finally got his humor back and seems more serious than before at the same time. No more half-assing his spy gig but finally accepting it. I’ve been waiting for the Buy More to turn into a CIA front since Season 2 ended, I was sure it would’ve been done in Season 3.
I’m no longer feeling depressed this season unlike seasons 2 and 3 which kind of constantly built you up and broke your heart the entire time. I couldn’t take it and this season is delivering right on schedule and with fewer errors than ever before. BTW the Season 4 Preview Review was right on target. One of the top 5 episodes to say the very least, as of now. I do hope the story involves Ellie a lot more this time around. It feels as though Captain Awesome and Ellie have taken a backseat since Season 1 and hopefully it doesn’t revolve around anymore lies as said. The whole end of Season 3 was to finally come out of the closet so to speak.
Thought the premiere was great, couple of miner quibbles but nothing that I could’ve totally lost my head over.
The part I’m curious about is at the beginning when Chuck is presumably talking to himself or was he asking his father from beyond the grave for advice and help.
Casey was pure love as always, I loved how he was such a big brother figure to the team in this episode. That devastated look on his face after it seemed Chuck and Morgan got killed was so well done. I swear AB must be the champion of facial expressions he’s so good.
Morgan had his moments of maturity but I’m afraid few and far between. Talking the liberty of sexting his best friends girl friend is not cool.
I was disappointed in Chuck for thinking Casey and Sarah would try to stop him (Really Chuck?) I loved how Casey called him out on it in a gentler version then that of the Colonel.
Hopefully the new role ‘No secrets, no lies’ can be kept in effect.
Mama B is one killer of a woman, I wonder what her agenda is….?
The crew will keep working with the CIA but when off duty, they go underground as a rogue band of free lance spies. Totally awesome, the gang’ll have to watch each other’s backs now from Beckman. I love how much Team B has gelled together watching the four of them plotting down in the OC I had a big smile on my face.
the gunfight was badass loved how they did that.
and the trapdoors and slide is made of win. 🙂
I have only one question. Is it monday yet?
Hey Josie or Mel I wrote a post but it’s not showing up HELP.
That’s been happening a lot to me lately too.
I actually thought this episode was fantastic. For me, it’s right up there with Living Dead and Tic Tac because it uses the cast well and has Team Bartowski operating as a team even when they’re not together. The issues I had with season 3 were mainly due to the lack of balance in individual episodes; for the most part we either got a dramatic episode or one played for laughs but rarely a good mix. I love this show because it’s multi genre. It may not be the best comedy or drama or action series on TV but, when they get the balance right, there’s no show more enjoyable. In Chuck Vs The Anniversary they got the balance spot on and it was pure joy. Well, I thought so anyway.
Wow, completely agree with almost all of this. The sexting gag was all build up with very little pay-off, and the reset back to the BuyMore and lying to Elli was disappointing. My biggest disagreement is about Morgan being hilarious. Guess it’s just me, but I don’t find his complete incompetence at any endeavor particularly funny, and the bit with him sexting with Sarah was just plain creepy. I’m hoping he isn’t going to be featured this prominently in every episode or this season is going to be hard for me to watch.
Here’s few of my favorite points from this episode.
-Chuck’s loyalty to his adopted family seems to mean more to him then his own mother he lost her years ago, he can’t bear to lose Casey, Sarah, and Morgan.
– Team B has gone from being paranoid and distrusting of each other to being the strongest force of the CIA.
-We have a new rogue spy agency now and I am bursting out of my skin with delight. 🙂
-I’m happy that Ellie and Awesome are finally starting a family that baby is going to be very protected and doted on by everyone. 😀
-The trapdoors and slide are really awesome I wish my house had something like that…*pouts*
-Is it next Monday yet?
Their timeline is not confused actually…Josh Schwartz says that it’s their six month anniversary that they’ve had to put off for three months because of ‘mission mishegas’. 🙂
Thanks for posting this info. I’m still totally confused about that timeline though-how do they get an extra 3 months in there? If they are using the episode air dates, then Vs. The Other Guy aired in the beginning of April, which would make their six month anniversary a week or two ago at the beginning of Sept. I’m not usually picky about timelines- and I did laugh at Chuck doing the slash move to animate his point, but it just bugged me when I couldn’t figure out the math of it.
I think it’s safe to say that Chuck time is different than real time. 😉 If they says it’s been nine months, then it’s been nine months in Chuck time.
In the past, they have gone to great pains to see that Chuck time and real time more or less coincide. We’ve had holiday-specific episodes where possible; casual dialogue references to how long things have been going on have been generally accurate; flashback scenes get dated captions. They have basically conditioned those of us who pay attention to such details to expect consistency in this regard, which in turn encourages us to keep track. So it comes as something of a shock that “the Anniversary” contains both an anniversary timeline warp and a misdated caption for the bedtime story. Maybe further budget cuts meant they couldn’t afford calculators.
Hahaha. I believe, Dr. Bob, you were right when you thought the show was now in “December” (after a 3 month mission), since it was snowing in Moscow. And in September Moscow is very pleasant, no snow at all.
Either that or the temp responsible for the “time, date and fact checking” was fired or hung over, because this 6/9 months reference, + this snowing in september (?) and the “Encino, CA, 1994” details are just too weird.
Thanks for the enlightenment as to the September weather situation in Moscow, Cat. I’ve never been, so I assumed that it snowed in Russia in August! If we’re now in December 2010, I can assume that “Chuck vs. the Aisle of Terror” will take place on Halloween 2011 and Ellie will have had her baby.
My comment dissapeared…
I just said that their timeline is in fact, correct. Josh Schwartz said that they’re celebrating their six month anniversary three months late because of ‘mission mishegas’.
I may be the only one to say this but I thought Sarah and Chuck were kind of…awkward? It just looked like their chemistry was off. Anyway, I loved the first episode and I can’t wait for next weeks. The whole sexting thing was weird and you are right, very little payoff. I completely agree about Mama B. having a Irina Derevko thing going on (I miss Alias).
Did I say I love this show…well, I LOVE THIS SHOW =)
The off chemistry could be just that, off chemistry.
Or possibly good acting. If we remember that Casey & Sarah have been more or less gone for a long period of time, maybe it would be natural for Sarah & Chuck to be a little off their game, relationship wise, and those two are acting it well. Just a thought.
Yeah perhaps you’re right. I did not think of it that way. Thanks =)
I noticed the chemistry thing too. But for me it started back toward the end of last season. It seemed like they cooled off after the Role Models episode. All I know is that in the first two seasons when they kissed it was very passionate, and now they sort of kiss like they’re already married. Speaking as a married person of course, not that that is a bad thing…but it seems a little early in the C&S relationship for that.
HH1 Fan, nice catch on the timeline! Wow, Sarah’s and Casey’s mission was incredibly long, wasn’t it?
Hope, I love the idea that there might be tension between Chuck’s loyalty to his mom and his loyalty to the people who have actually been there for them. But for Ellie’s sake, especially given how much she struggled with her relationship with her dad, I hope it all ends happily!
And thank you, everyone, for such wonderful comments on my first review here! I’m really excited to be a part of the chucktv.net community.
Happy to have you Josie welcome. Thanks for the review. 🙂
Hi Josie,
Thanks for your review!
The little BuyMore man running round the world put a big silly grin on my face and it stayed there for the rest of the show.
I was hoping for some more old-time Awesome who was pretty much sidelined for most of the last series, but the promise of more of the General kind of makes up for it.
But what a shame there were no fisticuffs between Sarah, Casey and Dolph Lundgren (who was a nicely menacing heavy).
But Linda Hamilton – wow, is she going to be this scary for the rest of the series? I certainly hope so.
Well, you can definitely see and feel the new writing staff on Chuck.
For example I think these sequences with sexting, Chuck’s and Morgan’s traveling the whole world only to come back to L.A and the car theft were actually great but you felt afterwards like something really new just had happened.
It seemed completely unusual for the characters and the show somehow. But I don’t wanna sound too negative, in the end it was funny and FRESH!
What really bugged me was that we didn’t see the whole cast in the episode (Big Mike, Jeffster, Captain Awesome), Olivia Munn was only in 2 scenes and not seen more often in the whole episode like I thought it would be.
The whole Volkoff Industries building was very Cold War-like but still realistic and it gave the scenery this great old Bond-movies-vibe.
And the last point is the production, I’m from Ukraine and I can definitely tell you that you cannot walk around in a t-shirt(Marco) and such an extremely short skirt(Sarah) in Russia :).
With Olivia Munn shown only so short I didn’t really understand the concept of GRETA and hope that Isaiah Mustafa is gonna be featured in more scenes next week.
Still it paid off to wait these four months (the geek references were there, Morgan was funny like always, Casey was Casey, I finally understood the concept of “doing couply stuff” and Mama B killing to this great music was awesome, now that’s someone who can kick some ass) and I’m pretty excited for the Milan – Fashion Week with Karolina Kurkova.
Let’s hope for the additional 9 episodes! 🙂
Well, Sarah had already knocked Dolph out earlier in the episode.
I love the Sarah and Casey scenes though. We need more of them. Casey is so uncomfortable talking about any sort of feelings. He obviously didn’t want to get into any in-depth discussion about long distance relationships. He is probably feeling like he is part of a family for the first time but doesn’t want to admit it.
I missed Awesome too but I don’t think he was necessarily needed in this episode. Although I do think that the show works best when the main characters of Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Morgan, Ellie and Awesome all appear in the same episode.
Excellent start to the season.
I like what you said Meandmine. Poor Casey, I felt bad for him when Sarah asked if he ever had a long distance relationship, and his reply ”No, I either leave or they die” made me go awww bless him. He might be still uncomfortable when it comes to feelings but he’s definitely getting there.
Sarah has used Casey as a sounding board since season 1 and both Yvonne and Adam play their parts so well it’s a shame not to use that more often. Hopefully we will see more this season together with Chuck and Morgan. So many possibilities either for comedy or drama.
Color me quite happy with this episode. I enjoyed it very much. Last year nearly killed me, but I read the message boards a lot.
This season, I’ve stayed from any spoilers and any of the message boards. Maybe that has helped.
There was a little too much “repo man” in the show. Otherwise, I thought, very good.
Particularly cute was the running “nerd herd guy” running straight from LA to Moscow. And it crossing paths with the airplane symbol that was carring Sarah & Casey.
I nearly died of laughter with the whole sexting thing. lol Would love if Sarah confronted Morgan about that though I seriously doubt the writers have time to put that in. The slide in the Buy More was epic and Mama B/Linda Hamilton was a bad a** as usual. So cool. Every scene with Morgan and Chuck was hilarious. And Dean Stanton made me laugh with everyone of his lines. And we are finally getting a baby Awesome. 🙂
My only complaints are that Chuck is still lying to Ellie and Oliva Munn was underused. Oh! And no shirtless Awesome to be found anywhere in this ep. As a woman, I like my shirtless Captain Awesome.
I loved the episode and the texting part.
One thing that I did notice and I hope they do more of is they let Yvonne be funny.
In the past, Zach was funny in his “nerd” way, Adam was funny in his “too serious” way and Yvonne was right in the middle. She was the one who was “keeping it real” so to speak.
The only incident where she was funny to me prior to this was her confrontation with Lester in S1.
Let’s see if they explore that a bit more.
She was hilarious as ‘Mrs. Charles’ in the Honeymooners. I quote ”I made an Oopsie” Haha still makes me laugh. 🙂
What about the scene with Morgan down in castle from last season? I thought that was pretty funny… 🙂 I can’t think of any others right now, but I’m sure there are some…
jus askin was anyone else besides me reminded of indiana jones when they showed the map montage this episode had everything the series never had which was really awesome best episode ever
Loved the sexting b/n Sarah and Morgan. Sarah’s exasperation is priceless.
Also, liked the Chuck/Sarah kiss at the beginning. It seemed more real than their kisses last season.
Loved, Loved, LOVED Sarah crying when she realized Chuck was still alive. And her expression when Chuck told her that finding his mother is not worth losing her. This man is truly her whole world.
well i really didn’t like the episode, have i missed something because the way the showed ended last season was sarah and chuck were captured and ally, captain awesome, morgan and casey were heading off to try and save them…that looked interesting and this was a huge let down
That was the second to last episode! You poor thing, I can’t imagne having to have waited all summer after that episode! You can watch the last episode at NBC.com/Chuck or at Hulu.com The season 4 premiere will probably make a lot more sense then! You missed a ton… 🙂
The season ended with a two-hour, two-episode finale: “the Subway” and “the Ring Part 2”. It seems that you missed “Ring Part 2”. It can be watched online at NBC.com and is available in the season 3 DVD set.
dude
you missed the last episodes
d’oh
Strong review, Josie! It’s nice to see you here.
I’m only a little surprised to see little love for the Buy More. Honestly, when there was talk about it being cut for budget the summer before S3 began, I realized it would be okay if they let it go. Still, I wasn’t sorry that it was kept, either. It had it’s place in the story.
Same thing this year. If the story gets too complex for the budget, it’s only logical to cut the ties to Chuck & Morgan’s past in favor of their present and future.
But I’d still miss it. I’ll even confess to missing Jeff and Lester this week.
I absolutely adored this episode! I’m so glad the show is back, and I’m even more excited that it has gotten back to its original mix of comedy, drama, action, etc. This episode was just the right amount of everything (for my taste, at least).
My favorite, as usual, was Casey. I can’t help but laugh, and then sigh with pure joy at how they’ve taken his character. He’s still serious and grumpy when he needs to be, but now he’s also a part of the family. He’s like a big brother to everyone in absolutely the best sense. And the look on his face when he thought Chuck was dead was the BEST moment of the episode for me. The writers and Adam Baldwin have made Casey one of my most favorite TV characters of all time.
So proud of my favorite show right now! It brings me joy!
Ditto to everything you said hazel, I couldn’t agree more. Casey as always is my favorite too.
The season 4 premier I gave 2 thumbs up. (I’ll will give 10 if I have 10 thumbs lol) . Very interesting, exciting and the writers had done a very good job. keep it up. But… chemistry between chuck and sarah it seems off. Is not like a loving couple. They didn’t celebrate their anniversary after their mission was over like a couple really falling in love. The world knows that they already a couple/lovers. So chuck and sarah should go all out showing it…. weeeeell at least to chuck’s hardcore fans.
Did anyone of you see the third Batman movie with Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey, I think they got the idea for this pipe in the Buy More from that movie 🙂
>The writers and Adam Baldwin have made Casey one of my most favorite TV characters of all time.<
Ditto 🙂
I love the black silhouette ‘Avengers’ homage with Josh/Morgan holding the umbrella! Linda Hamilton is suitably and gloriously bad-ass; it’ll be interesting to see how Mama B interacts with Casey, should they meet in due course. I loved the chute/tube in the ‘Buy More’. I bet there are more of those. Lovely to see Beckman out from behind her desk and part of the action.
Overall I really enjoyed this episode. I did wish that the anniversary celebration would have been the three year anniversary of when Chuck first met Sarah. Even though it took 2 2/3 years for them to be “dating exclusively” as a couple it would have been nice to have seen them do something more special for the occasion.
That was a really good episode. I had a lot of fun watching it. I do not now why some of you do not like scenes with sexting. I think they were hilarious and funny. There was nothing disgusting in it. I enjoyed it a lot. I hope the old Buy More atmosphere will be back. I adored the Buy More in the first three seasons. It was a great comic part of “Chuck”. Anyway I am waiting for more. I hope Chuck and Sara will work on their relationship and we will see some touching moments!!
Um this episode rocked!! I kinda wanted a little more chara lovin on their anniversary but no biggie! I loved the scene of the happy couple in te beginning (: that was super cute. “stay safe okay?” “nothing will keep me from coming back to you.” or “what do I say?” “I love you!” “oh I love you I like that. Love you too!” super awesome!!
I cant wait to see what they do with ellies baby bump! (: oh man this is gonna be a great season. Cant wait until Monday now. But the scenes from the next/like the rest of the season look amazing!!!!
What does TPTB mean? People use it all the time and I never figured it out.
Sam CH, it’s “The Powers That Be.”
I’m pretty sure that its popularity originated with Joss Whedon’s Angel, but I might be wrong about that.
Does anyone have those pictures of Sarah? I still have the picture of her in the nurse outfit as my background and I have an EPIC CRUSH on her. One of the things on my bucket list is to have dinner with her. I hope I’m doing nothing on Monday, because I almost (gasp!) MISSED it last week. (I ended up watching it live after all. Thank goodness.) I miss “Chuck” for no one or nothing.
See You On Monday And Bring Your Friends,
John

All Chuck Fans In The Midwest, LET ME HEAR YOU!!!
Love the reference to Irina Derevko. Reminds me of my Alias addiction days.
I still love the show. Morgan is as always, hilarious but awesomely very helpful. And I’m still a solid Chuck-and-Sarah fan!
