Review: Chuck versus the Cubic Z

“I wouldn’t call that lining silver so much as copper, or zinc, or manganese.”

Sometimes, you want a delicate French wine with floral hints and a robust finish—you can drink in on a romantic spyventure to Monaco with your superhot sweetie. Instead, life hands you lemons (Nicole Richie and Stone Cold Steven Austin). Do you get all puckery and upset, or learn to deal with Splenda-flavored lemonade? Have you lost my metaphor? What I’m really asking is: can Chuck and Sarah deal with possibly wanting slightly different things? Can they deal with compromise, and the difficult realities of a functioning, realistic relationship?

Morgan highlighted the perils of answering the will-they-or-won’t-they question: Where’s the hand-wringing? Chuck attempts to answer the question by inserting new hand-wringing into the Sarah-and-Chuck equation. To wit: Sarah might not be cut out for an adult relationship, and Chuck might not have the adult patience to wait for her to be ready. It’s slightly less compelling than previous seasons’ romantic entanglements, but it’s still interesting, and I’m curious to see how the accidental proposal has some very unintentional effects in next week’s episode.

But in the meantime, I should probably say something about the stunt casting. At times, it’s hilarious: I really enjoyed Bronson Pinchot’s two-second cameo in the premiere. Other times, it’s a bit irksome. I appreciate a dollop of Steven Austin as much as the next 20-something female feline aficionado. (That is, I’m a woman and I like cats. I don’t much care if the cats are male or female.) But I’m not sure Nicole Richie adds much…of anything. Many of her lines had great potential, but they required a bit more punch in the delivery. Even the thrill of watching Nicole Richie throw actual punches faded by the end of “Chuck versus the Cougars.” And that was two years ago.

From the stunt casting to the pre-fabricated ingredients (duct chase, riot, retinal scan), this episode felt like the writers were desperately trying to bring more energy to a script that really wasn’t working. When my favorite part is the use of a cool song (four times!), I know something’s not hitting the mark. Then again, there were some strong moments. The accidental proposal. Casey learning to emote, awkwardly. Jeff’s and Lester’s poetry-slam-kung-fu. The return of Big Mike and his disco stick of death. Did I mention the poetry slam?

In that sense, I’m just like Chuck. I wanted this to be an episode of a lifetime, with Monaco and that pricey wine. Instead, I got the some lemons, which included some emotional exposition by Nicole Richie. But I can like lemonade, too.

Bytes:

  • Morgan: “I’m De Niro serious.”

Chuck: “You’re beyond De Niro. This is Russell Crowe serious.”

  • Big Mike: “I love to see you in that suit. I wouldn’t want anyone else to wear it.” I love the implication that it’s the same suit that shrinks or grows to fit the wearer, like the “traveling pants” of that sisterhood I’ve heard so much about from the tweens I know.
  • Sarah: “How ‘bout tough cop, silent cop?”

Chuck: “Okay-dokey. Which one am I?”

  • Chuck: “You know, I was thinking about how some of my favorite movies wound up in air ducts. Aliens, Die Hard—although generally speaking, it doesn’t end up well for the duct crawlers.”
  • Lester: “They want me to read you this trash. But you deserve better. We as a people deserve better. So, brace yourselves for a free-form, no-holds-barred poetry slam.”

And Pieces:

  • The new Greta is very pretty. Watching Steven Austin stone-cold-cock her was fun, too.
  • Morgan’s mother’s name is Bologna Garcia Bougainvillea Grimes?
  • Poor, injured Casey. Are we not going to see him next week? I’ll miss him.

2.75 out of four full half-caret pear-cut cubic zirconiums. Zirconia. Stupid Latin.

(By the way, you might be wondering who I am. I’m Josie Kafka, and I review Chuck, Fringe, and The Vampire Diaries for billiedoux.com. And now, thanks to the goodwill of the chucktv masterminds, I’m recapping Chuck here, too!)

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the possibility of Nerd HQ’s return. Well, …

  1. I’ll agree with this review to a point, but overall, I’d give the episode better than a 2.75 out of 4. In my opinion, Nicole Richie did a fine job bringing Heather Chandler back, especially given the fact that it’s been two years since we last saw her. I especially liked the part near the end where Sarah cuts Heather loose and they briefly fight side by side–I’m always up for a good “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” moment. 🙂

The game sale/riot subplot may not have been outrageously great, but it was as good a way as any for showing Morgan’s difficulty in taking the reins of the store, and in bringing Big Mike back.

All that, plus the meatier role played by the Greta character (meatier than we’ve seen thus far, anyway), classic Jeffster humor, a great fight between Chuck and Hugo, Big Mike once again unwittingly taking down a spy villain and a healthy dose of relationship angst & (almost) resolution for Chuck and Sarah, and if I had to put a number to this one, it’d be at least a 4 out of 5. 🙂

  2. Maybe I’m easier to please than most but I’ve found all three episodes this season to be delightful. This one was no exception. I loved watching Sarah work out her frustrations by beating up Casey. What about Casey fighting with the voice prompts? Big Mike is always hilarious without ever cracking a smile. Glad to have him back. And, I liked having Nicole Ritchie back. While she is certainly no Yvonne in the acting department, she was still fun. I’d like to see more of her if only for the back story potential she brings.
Overall, I’m very happy with the way the season is going. Can’t wait for next week!

    • Same here. This season has been really great so far IMO. I think it is possible that some are expecting too much. I’m enjoying every minute of this season and Cubic Z was a great episode.

    • I absolutely agree with you! My hubby and I are huge Chuck fans, and we have both thoroughly enjoyed this season so far. We especially love how they’ve brought back all of our fav characters, and we’ve loved the Sarah/Casey interplay. Well, okay, we’ve just loved Casey in general, but honestly, we just love all of the character development so far.

      Can’t wait till next week!

  3. I gotta say vs the Cubic Z was was better than vs the Suitcase.. I don’t know why but this one just did it for me…

  4. Hey Josie thanks for the review. And no worries about Casey, he’ll show next week count on it. 😉 The episode was ok but something felt off to me I gave my full opinion on the other post so I’ll say no more other than I’m looking forward to next Monday. 😀

  5. I have actually been satisfied with all the episodes.everyone is talking about how they are unsatisfied by the premiere ep. or the suitcase or even this one but I’ve loved em all!

  6. I posted for the first time on the he said review. I want to say that I love Chuck, I don’t want much TV and this is my guilty pleasure. One of the things that I love about the show is the contrasts. Chuck’s spy life vs. Chuck’s job, Awesome and Ellie’s relationship vs. Chuck and Sarah’s relationship. This episode didn’t show any contrast. If it really was supposed to be about Sarah coming to a realization that she could eventually settle down with Chuck, where was the contrast?

Instead they may have tried to show that a normal life isn’t that normal; if that was the case do it at another time because it just became one big mess. It was similar to the Tiger episode, where Chuck is taking the collar from the tiger at the same time that Morgan is taking the keys from Big Mike. Done in small doses, it works out great, not so much when its the entire episode. Give us time to catch our breath.

    And please less Morgan.

  7. Two things: I meant to say I don’t watch much TV and less Morgan, more Casey. Thank you.

  8. The Buy More was the weakest part of this ep and is the reason I give it a 3/4 stars. There were great fight scenes and funny lines and moments one of my favorite being the Chuck and Sarah supply closet thing. 😉 lol are they seriously doing that in a freakin CIA base on multiple occasions? lol And watching Greta get punched in the face was epic as well as the fight between Chuck and Hugo after they fell from the air vent (which are the freakin’ largest air vents I have ever seen). lol Overall I found the episode to be the best of season 4 so far though next weeks episode, from what I saw from the promo and from what I have heard, looks to be one of the best of the entire series. Hopefully Casey will be feeling better. 🙂

  9. I liked this episode, really enjoying the music more this season, though that’s always been good on Chuck. However, they really need to clean up the Buy More stroryline. No way should Big Mike be back as asst. mgr. – it’s a real blow to Morgan’s credibility. Also, there’s no way a CIA run Buy More would have a riot and would not have received only 6 copies of the game. Loved the supply closet line and Casey’s fight with the fire override. “The location of the fire emergency override, or you die”.

  10. My wife and I have enjoyed all three episodes of Season 4 and we think they are great additions to the story that began with the pilot in Season 1. All episodes are going to strike different people different ways and I respect that. Hey, we have our favorites and not so favorites too. Even so I think there is a whole lot of unnecessary nitpicking going on with these Season 4 episodes.

  11. “To wit: Sarah might not be cut out for an adult relationship, and Chuck might not have the adult patience to wait for her to be ready.”

I agree with a lot of, but THAT is an interesting line. It implies that Chuck is ready for an adult realtionship.

I’ve been wondering about Chuck as an adult myself… why does he have a joint bank account with Morgan; why did he own a car with Morgan; why was Morgan following him to interviews; why didn’t he know he was $43K in debt; why did he need Morgan to trot the globe with him????

Chuck’s a nice guy… but he still has growing to do himself.

  12. Loved Sarah & Casey talking the relationship thing while Sarah works out her kick boxing anger on him. Chuck & Sarah in the closet, lol. Heather brought out Sarah’s hidden feelings, who knew. So far this season much better than last.

  13. I agree with most of the comments ive seen, in that I disagree with the review. This episode was superior to The Suitcase, and the ending was sheer brilliance, idk what it was, the song, or just the camera following the ring down the vents, but I was geniunely happy just watching the end of the episode.

  14. Good episode. I think all have been good and the progression of Chuck/Sarah is nice. Long way to go though.

  15. I am so frustrated with Chuck and Sarah’s relationship. Just let them fall deeply in love and let Chuck have Sarah’s respect. At times it seems she pities him like a puppy. You keep waiting for her to “wake up” and realize she is dating a “boy” not a man. Episode one at least allowed Chuck to behave manly and Sarah seemed touched by his rescue of her. He can be a very funny “adult” if you let him be like he was in episode one. PUT THEM TOGETHER!
