“You both are, without a doubt, crap communicators. Precious looks and whimsical little make-ups after big misunderstandings, you guys are fantastic. But actual real, live day-to-day communication about your feelings?â€
The first few episodes of this season have been rather divisive. Some of us love some, some of us love others, and some of us just love Chuck all the time. Last week’s episode felt wrong to me: not funny enough, a bit too cliché, and too reliant on Nicole Richie. After reading the comments, though, which pretty roundly agreed that I was dead wrong, I started to think that I was being too harsh. Was I expecting too much? Or, more precisely: Was I expecting the wrong thing?
I don’t think I was, because this episode had everything that I love about Chuck, in spades: a compelling spy story that interlaced with Chuck and Sarah’s personal and relationship dilemma, which was, in turn, paralleled the Buy More b-plot. It was funny, touching, and had a healthy dose of Ellie and Awesome. Plus, Sarah in a bikini for those who enjoy such things. (Although our only man-meat was rather statuesque for my taste.)
Chuck and Sarah are terrible communicators, perhaps because they don’t really get to spend much time alone together. But when they are honest, they say exactly what the other person wants to hear, which is how we know they’re going to work out. They’re not quite certain, though, and they’re still afraid. When Chuck asked Sarah to list five things about him, we cut to the Generalissimo singing “Que tengo miedoâ€â€” “that I’m scared”. That could apply to Sarah and Chuck equally. They’re not scared of commitment, though. They’re scared of screwing things up, and Sarah’s sacred of opening herself up and vulnerably admitting how much she feels for our hero.
The Generalissimo and his wife are an example of just where that fear of communication can lead: if only they’d been more open and honest about their feelings, the world would be a safer place. (Ellie and Awesome, obviously, are examples of how communication can lead to bliss.) Morgan, on the other hand, risks bamboo shoots under the nails if he’s open and honest about his feelings for Casey’s daughter. And that’s a risk he took. Way to go, Morgan!
Way to go, writers, too! This episode was extremely fast-paced, with a small nation’s future being written and re-written in every act. I love that they went from LA to Costa Gravas to LA and back to Costa Gravas. I love that they had the Generalissimo briefly room with Casey, and that Casey predicted a betrayal 19 years in the future back in his military days.
In conclusion: this was a great episode, and it reminded me of how delightful this show can be.
Bites:
- Beckman: “I want everyone who wasn’t shot recently to stake out the embassy to see if he turns up. Everyone else should be in bed.â€
- Torini: “Actually, Costa Gravas is very stable. We have peace now. And Subway sandwich franchises.†Sort of like Chuck.
- Chuck: “Yes, that, both, all of the above.†I almost expected him to say “I want to go to there.â€
- Generalissimo: “That is an unmistakable fragrance…There is nothing more attractive than a ripe fruit.â€
- Awesome: “Babe, is the nine-foot statue of me making you a little caliente? Way to go, marble me.â€
- Casey: “Just follow the stink of commie.â€
- Generalissimo: “A coup d’etat? We used to finish each other’s sentences.â€
- Generalissimo: “I have a nuclear weapons control panel in my basement.â€
- Casey: “That’s the stench of tyranny.â€
- Big Mike: “If you hear sweet, smooth jams rising up from your soul, that’s your answer.â€
And Pieces:
- In the spirit of not expecting the wrong thing, I will not talk about socialism, communism, capitalism, imperialism, how the Generalissimo’s marriage might be an allegory of American policy in Latin America, or what subaltern studies can tell us about that allegory.
- Did you notice the odd way Sarah’s face was framed when she and Chuck were having their conversation about conversations in the van? We saw her from Chuck’s perspective, but Chuck from the perspective of a third party.
- I wish Beckman was still in Burbank.
3.80 out of 4 cuddling needs.
(And who am I, anyway? I’m Josie Kafka, and I review Chuck, Fringe, and the Vampire Diaries for billiedoux.com. The Generalissimo’s new Secretary of State has given me permission to post my reviews here, too–although my nuclear capabilities might have helped sway her decision.)
“This was a great episode, and it reminded me of how delightful this show can be.”
I couldn’t agree more with this conclusion! It was a great episode and I can’t wait to see what next week (and the following weeks!) brings. 🙂
“Compelling spy story”? Disagree. That was one of the lamest spy plots Chuck has offered up yet. A dictators wife threatens to go nuclear because her husband treats her differently than he used to? Ridiculous.
Ditto it wasn’t that great IMHO it had it’s moments but it was a little weak where Costa Graves was concerned.
Agreed. The spy story was complete crap and I hate to say it, but it’s kind of a chuck-egotistic thing to say and probably more ammo the Chuck haters would use against us for having blind love of the show. Everything BUT the spy story was strong if you ask me, but it worked out flawlessly because of it, so it wasn’t a negative toward the episode or story one bit. There are so many things I can say about this episode in particular but for the sake of not writing a book I’ll just say this, it just clicked. Everyone got their fair share of air time which wasn’t biased in any sort of way (unless you miss Jeffster) and it was just an all around pleasure to see how that worked in perfect harmony without complicating things. This definitely gave me flashbacks of the first season of Chuck where they could pull off many story lines at a time without the complications (mainly Sarah/Chuck relationship or Papa B/Spy) involving themselves.
Anybody notice that the music that played when Chuck and Sarah were fighting the revolutionaries to the revolutionaries the same music played as when Sarah and Bryce saved Chuck in the Buy More all those seasons ago? Some full circle stuff going on here.
Well, I liked last week´s episode more. I loved that fight where Chuck and Sarah showed to Ellie and Devon how is the real spy stuff done. But then they still talked and talked. I love Sarah and Chuck together, I just wish they would stop constatntly talking about things. They are together – and now, baby steps. They don´t have to deal with everything every week, and in every episode.
Anybody else notice that the music that played when Chuck and Sarah took on the revolutionaries early on was the same as when Sarah and Bryce fought together all those seasons ago? Some great full circle stuff going on here.
Thank god there was no Greta in this episode!
Show and Tell time: A study in contrasts. From the utter lameness of the “Cubic Z” to the zest and sparkle of the “Coup d’Etat” in just one week! It’s like a before-and-after shot. I hope that the friends I’ve been trying to recruit to the “Chuck” cause chose this week to watch their first episode.
I didn’t love last week’s episode. It was okay, but nothing special. I liked this one way better. The last 2 episodes were written by 2 new writers. So I can understand why it didn’t fulfill our expectations. But I’m a little bit upset about how they work things out w/ C&S relationship. Chuck has got to stop pushing Sarah to talk about their relationship because it’s starting to get me annoyed. I’m a shipper and I love them as a couple. But I think the writers should move on from the couple’s future drama and start to work on the spy story. I liked the drama, but it was getting a bit too much. But overall, I’m pretty satisfied w/ last night’s episode.
(Sorry about my English. Obviously it is not my first language)
I see EXACTLY where you are coming from and I think the fan base would either say the same thing or be split 50/50 because we’ve waited for so long to finally get S/C in a relationship. I do think they are pushing things waaaaay too fast and coming off as too strong with it though. I was hoping they’d ease into it and do this at the end of the season. I almost get the impression they are doing this to set up the next season being the Chuck and Sarah temp split then rediscover/marry during that season. That’s the vibe I’m getting and I really hope they don’t go that route because it means we’d only have had a couple of “Normal” couple episodes during this 3 year wait and the rest still being just constant minor bickering. When the directors said this season C/S would be together and nothing standing in their way I didn’t think they’d do it like this per se at least so soon. If this is the case I’d almost say bring another Shaw back because all I’m thinking about now is “Ok, which episode is going to be the break up” and not really enjoying the couple thing as each episode swings like a pendulum just like their feelings did for the first 3 seasons.
Stop that couple thing! Sarah has a lot of patient with Chuck’s comunication issues. I cannot wait to see next episode, I really want more action in a Casey-story
I think the C/S relationship is going at the right pace. I do want to see Sarah participate in even more of the comedy aspects of the show. I also would like a closer Ellie/Sarah relationship. Casey remains a real comedic presence. Love, comedy and adventure add up to an enjoyable season that looks like it will just get better.
Does anyone feel the writers are running out of ideas? I feel the show is lacking something this year.
I feel the writers are in the right direction. I love all the season 4 episodes so far. Got spy work, romance, jealousy, angry etc….love it all.
So far he best episode of the season, with the premiere coming in a close second.
A perfect blend of all the elements that make Chuck such a great show.
Am I the only one who questions the wisdom of taking relationship advice from Morgan Grimes?
It’s a hit and miss with Morgan. He says things at times that are Casey like in the Captain Obvious with regards to the suitcase, but for romantic advice Chuck and Morgan have a history of blindly listening to one another.
Of the season four episodes this one kicks the others to the rear of the bus. This was the Chuck of old: fun, funny, and everyone getting their licks in. What more can you ask for? Those of you, who aren’t into the romance thing are missing an integral part of the show. Have fun with it, Chuck is everyman, the kid who dreamed of being Sean Connery when he grew up. Although he had different plans, he has made his world a success. Cheers to him and his world. And the most beautiful woman (second only to my wife) in the world…
I’ve been a huge fan of the Chuck/Sarah thing from the beginning, so don’t get me wrong, I adore them. However, am I the only person who thinks that they’ve created 3 1/2 seasons of romantic agnst and return gave us the most boring couple? I’m sorry if I am the only one, but there is no passion there, just questions from a marrige book, and I get it, it was an endearing joke. But even before there was so much pent up emotions an now nothing. When it first started it was all good and cute, and now season 4 is in and I don’t see it. Anyways, I still love the show.
Josie I believe you struck the nail right on its proverbial head. Chuck and Sarah have not had any doubts about each other for a long time.
I agree, their fears center around screwing it up. I would guess that for Chuck it is because he’s Chuck. For Sarah, it is clearly about moving too fast and changes messing up for her what is now a great thing.
Well done.
Man I totally agree with what you say.I always wondered why these two couldn’t talk. Part of that is Sarah doesn’t like to talk about her feelings, but you expressed it perfectly they have a fear of screwing up what each sees is the best thing in their lives. Change and it possible effects are scary.
I am glad you enjoyed this episode as I did and lets hope we both continue to be smiling a lot this season. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Everyone is saying that the C/S stuff has gone overboard but I like this aspect of the show. This is something we have never seen before. They just got together in season three yes but they have been in love for three seasons. People are saying they are moving their relationship to fast, but supposedly they’ve been together for 8 months since the last tome we’ve seen them. Bein in love for four years don’t you think they would be at this stage? I do. I love hat the writers have been doing i do agree that they need more intense spy storylines but those will begin to heat up when they find mama b don’t you think!?!? Idk I guess I just like things others don’t cuz so far I think they’ve done a grrreat job this season(:
We were talking about this episode at dinner. Since it aired on my birthday, let me get this out of the way: NBC, your thank-you note is in the mail. Did anyone notice the hilarious product placement for the Sienna? Sienna, I now change your name from “Swagger Wagon” to “Awesome Van.” Another thing, my dad thinks that the only reason people watch “Chuck” is because of Sarah. Although she is a total babe (“If she was a president, she’d be BABEraham Lincoln!” -Garth), I have to ask: is this true? Did Chuck come off a bit irritating to you last week? I’m just saying.
