After weeks of nail biting from fans and consistency in the ratings from Chuck, NBC has rewarded us all by ordering 11 additional episodes of Chuck for season 4, bringing the total order for this season to 24 episodes.
Deadline reports that digital media rights were what held up the deal from being announced yesterday. They also point out that NBC primetime chief Angela Bromstad claimed Chuck‘s loyal, passionate audience is one of the reasons they added more episodes.
Why 11 episodes instead of 6 like last season? Nine is the usual number a network orders to fill out a season of 22 episodes. Season 3 was an anomaly because it premiered in January and the Olympics were going to pre-empt at least 2 weeks and they had a couple of other specials that needed to air. NBC only had enough broadcast room for 6 additional episodes before the end of the spring season. So, because we premiered in the fall this year, the network has plenty of room for a super-sized order of 24 episodes.
This also brings the total number of Chuck episodes by the end of season 4 to 78, just 22 shy of the golden 100 for syndication. It’s still too early to speculate on season 5, but a full episode order would bring the total to…100!
Party in the comments!
Woo hoo!!!! I am so happy!!!! I just love Team Bartowski and I’m so glad to have 11 more episodes to look forward to!!!!
This awesome news. I am glad to see Chuck is getting rewarded for a job well done. Keep it up everyone and we can keep this great series going.
Woot!! I’m so happy! This is terrific.
Great news! I expected season 4 to be the last since there’s very little room for character growth anymore, but 78 episodes puts 100 tantalizingly close!
This is awesome news! More Chuck to look forward to.
Yes!!! i was hoping for 6 maybe even 9 but 11?! i have been doing the happy dance all day!
This is such great news. But, there’s one aspect of this that I find very nice: the number. Here’s why: for one thing, this will allow plenty of episodes to air without having to compete with the beast that is Monday Night Football. Secondly, I don’t know how many episodes House is going for this season or when its season finale is, but I’m hoping that episodes 22-24 might air on the Mondays after the House season finale airs, and maybe even DWTS as well, which means a whole lot less competition than normal, which in turn means that Chuck might get a chance or two to show NBC what kind of ratings it can get if they air it on a different night with less competition (which is what NBC should have been doing all this time). If this does happen, maybe NBC will finally get smart at long last and change the time slot, and then watch Chuck’s ratings soar.
Thats awesome!!!
I really hope they get an season 5 order!
I think it would be epic if it ended with the 100th episode, maybe even a double episode like the season 3 finally
Making two epic episodes would definatly be an awesome ending to our beloved show
I’m such a late comer to Chuck, halfway into season 2 but this news makes me happy! Its a great show and I’m loving every minute. Hopefully this series will run for longer than the 4 seasons.
you are a late comer? I just started watching Chuck during the Olympics break in season three. I am just happy that there going to be more the 13 episodes this season.
Yeahhhhh Go Team Bartowsky!!!!
Yes yes yes yes yes… Way to go NBC. Way to go Chuck and totally awesome pat on the back for all us devoted Chuck fans. Our loyalty is being rewarded.
This is a big “In your face” to all the doubters and pessimists of Chuck out there. Lets hope a few cross over from the dark side. This may boost our strong fan base now.
Lets keep it up and maybe a season 5 is on the cards?
Go Chuck.
I hope they don’t rearrange anything in season 4’s arc to accomodate a longer season. I liked how Season 3 had a “finale” at episode 13 and then picked up for a mini-season with the back 6. I hope the writers do the same this time around and treat the back 11 as “season 4.5.” It’s more enjoyable when you get your resolution and then pick up the threads a week later.
I’d like to see the writers take a gamble and use the back 11 to start off an epic story line that would continue through a fifth season of Chuck were renewed.
You mean like they did with the extra episodes of season 3? And the end of season 2?
No. I’m thinking of something a little more integrated than what they’ve done in the past. In season 2 and 3 your basically get an end of season cliff hanger that occurs as the result of the activities in the final stretch of episodes. In Season 2 they were trying to bring down Fulcrum then they discover that there’s something called the Ring out there in the final episode. In Season 3 they take down the Ring and find out that Orion has a hide out full of intel in the final episode. In both seasons it feels like the destruction of the Ring and Fulcrum was done sloppily to fit it in before the end of the season with something new tacked on the end in case of renewal. It would be nice if the organization or individual they were trying to bring down at the end of the additional eleven episodes was the same group or person in the next season. That way they could give the villains a little more depth and not make them solely card board cut outs, or people they drug out of the studio audience.
I’m thinking that Volkoff Industries is going to be around for awhile.
or they could deal with remnants of the ring or fulcrum ex jill and we already came across panzer
This is great news. Now the path is clear for more wacky missions, a new baby, and a wedding. I am also hoping for more backstory on Sarah. Perhaps a return of Jack Burton and some information about Sarah’s mysterious sister – whether a sister exists or not. I think it would be fun if she had a sister…
I agree but i dont think thats gonna happen this season maybe jack cons volkoff
Huzza! Huzza! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. With these extra eps they story line can get even deeper!
yeaaaaaah baby… I have been biting my nails over this for weeks but we finally get the back episodes and a bumper amount NBC really are legends and that “100 episodes” is interesting I really think that goes toward the 5th season in a big way! BIG LOVE FOR CHUCK FROM ENGLAND! I just wish I could make a ratings impact but never the less chuck rules!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (: (: My life is now complete!!! 😀
YES! VICTORY!!! Subway “Bartowski Special” (Ham, American Cheese, Lettuce, Mayonnaise, and Green Pepper on White Bread) On The House! I’m not really paying for it, but hey, SANDWICH TOAST!! To Chuck! May he continue to prosper! HUZZAH!!!!
cheers! Love subway, to0!
That is awesome news to be honest i was kinda getting nervous ….Can breathe now lol
yipee! more of chuck and sarah!
…and casey, and ellie, and awesome, and morgan, and alex, and gen beckman…
I just hope the ratings get better especially after the lack of advertising that has been done. I have heard every other show on the network advertised except for Chuck.
Yeehaa… i nearly bit off my fingers and lost my damn nerves waiting for some new information regarding season 4 and when i read this article….phew!
Damn yeah! Go Team Bartowski! The character development may run maximum for another 2 seasons in my opinion but if you ask me i want like 10 seasons. Chuck and Sarah are just great. Period. 😀
BEST. NEWS. EVER.
This is awesome! no pun intended. Love CHUCK!
I don’t want to rain on people’s parades, but I worry that the extra two episodes are really to allow for a series finale. I do not want this. Chuck is fun and I’ll weep and moan for years if Yvonne has to go back to Australia. WHAT IF SHE NEVER COMES BACK?!?!?
The article should note that 88 is the new 100 for syndication. Ugly Betty was sold for syndication with only 88 episodes, shows are being syndicated earlier nowadays. It is conceivable that NBC could sell Chuck’s syndication rights at the end of this year…
I believe the minimum for hour-long shows is 64, but the “golden” number is 100.
We’ll get the front half of season 4 with a nice arc up to the middle… then the writers can treat the remaining order as a brand new season and fire off in a new direction. Win-win folks.
Holy crap!!!! Happy Chuck Fan Here! — Thank you NBC and execs for the pickup. Thanks to all the hard work by the folks on the show and to all the fans out there supporting it.
Excelllent news!!! Besides Chuck’s family and friends there are still some aspects of Sarah’s family that may have potential. We still have not had a follow up to Sam? Why share with Shaw and not Chuck? A simple answer might be that Sarah knew that Shaw already knew her real name and was testing her to see if she woould tell him the truth—probably a not on that! Too much angst potential on that subject. There are still a tremendous number of adventures Sarah and Chuck can share this season and hopefully a season 5. Morgan and Casey have not been over explored- Let the comedy and adventure take off!!!
Yay! Perfect early B-day present, thanks NBC!
Looking forward to an action-packed spy missions with Team Bartowski. Can’t wait!
