‘Build A Solid Spy Story And Good Episodes Will Come.’
Field of Dreams Paraphrase
After three consecutive episodes of Chuck and Sarah relationship hand holding, and BuyMore resetting, the show returned to the spy story with The Couch Lock. In a big way too. This episode did so many things right that it made me giddy with joy.
In model, ‘Show don’t tell,’ manner, this episode dramatized Chuck’s realization that his quest to find his mother is putting his immediate loved ones in mortal danger. Casey, Morgan, and Sarah were placed in harm’s way as a direct result of what Chuck set in motion. By using the supporting players to show this it is a win, win situation. Not only do we get to share with Chuck the experience of what he has caused to happen but Casey and Morgan get to grow as characters, interact with the leads more, and play off one another in both dramatic and humorous ways.
Why was this all possible? Because the episode had a solid story foundation to work from. The longevity of a series comes down to its characters. The strength of individual episodes come down to how strong the story engine is. With Chuck being a spy based show that equates to having solid missions. Those missions work even better when an emotional connection can be forged between it and the cast. The more characters with personal stakes in the mission the better. With Couch Lock the initial emotional hooks are with Casey and his former A-Team members. This one works even better because it ties in to the season arc for MamaB, Morgan’s relationship with Casey and his daughter Alex, and the aforementioned Chuck episode arc of weighing the cost of the end goal versus the means he is using to get there.
With all that to work with the episode becomes a gold mine of character beats, action set pieces, comedy, heart felt moments, and just plain old fun. Riffing off of the A-Team, Charade, Weekend At Bernie’s, and Entrapment to name a few there was very much to like about this one. This episode also makes the best use of Jeff and Lester since Dream Job and the American Hero where their unknowing participation in the spy storyline is seamless and as a result very funny. Another sign of a good episode is when the BuyMore supports the main storyline instead of detracting from it.

- Alex to Morgan, ‘You are brave.’
- ‘Break her heart, I break your everything.’
- Chuck and Sarah fountain scene. Chuck deciding to give up search for MamaB as price is too high.
- MamaB calling Chuck.
With the exception of Big Mike, everyone puts in an appearance and none of it felt contrived. Especially nice was the family gathering at Morgan’s party. Adam Baldwin really demonstrated a lot of acting range with even more minimal body movement because of his Weekend At Bernie’s Couch Lockdown. The eye emotings he did, mostly with Morgan, were hilarious. But really the episode belonged to Morgan as he ‘died’ for three seconds and proved to Casey that he is indeed a good guy. Casey and Morgan scenes are gold and this episode gave us twenty-four carat ones. Morgan and Alex continued to show their chemistry from the previous episode was no fluke. Also very refreshing to see Alex being very open and direct in her talks with Morgan.
For an episode that had so many of Zac Levi’s real life friends such as Joel David Moore and Eric Roberts in it, it was unfortunate that Chuck and Sarah were somewhat subordinate in the episode. All to the good mind you because that is what the story called for. It has been awhile since the Chuck that I really liked so much as a character has had a chance to come out but he did this episode. He learned a lesson and was willing to give up the search for his mother. Great to see his priorities back in proper order.
Fortunately, for dramatic purposes, Chuck’s activities have caught Volkoff’s attention and, no doubt, prompted him to bring in his cleaner. MamaB.
Exciting!
This was a freakin’ awesome episode. Morgan and Casey were hilarious together and Morgan as it turns out is a bad ass. The spy part of the story was fun and Jeff and Lester were so funny. And finally, next week we will be able to see Mama B and Freddie Kruger. 🙂
I agree 100% with your review. I loved the Charade funeral nod. It was my favorite episode of the season.
Loved this EP!
Its a girl! I really didn’t think that Awesome would want to know… I figured him for the traditional wait and see…. wonder if they’ve picked out a name yet. [ And Fedak promised the baby would be born this season!!!]
Casey and Morgan were tops… I like Jeff and Lester better when they interact with Casey and Morgan- especially since we see less and less of Chuck working behind the Nerd Herd desk. Loved to watch Morgan sqirm… how uncomfortable he was in trying to tell Casey about his relationship with Alex… [NBC has Casey’s rules for dating his daughter posted already…]
The only minor change I’d make is near the final scenes… I’d have appreciated a moment where Chuck tells Casey and Morgan and Sarah how he feels… not just Sarah – although a return to the fountain was a trip down memory lane.
I like the way they have setup a confrontation between Team Bartowski and Volkoff Industries. As it stands, Team B has to be dealt with!
Does Lancaster get to pick the baby’s name the way Strahovski picked “Sam”?
Team B IS a force to be reckoned with let villains beware. Muhahahahaaa. 😉
‘Build A Solid Spy Story And Good Episodes Will Come.’
EXACTLY! I agree with most in your review this week.
I really liked this episode,it fun, and I’m SO GLAD they kept the Chuck and Sarah relationship angst in the background. Thanks! The only thing that didn’t work for me so well is the Morgan and Alex pairing. Dunno but I”m not feeling the chemistry or maybe is the way the actors are being directed. I’m not buying it much yet. I think Morgan showed a lot more chemistry with Carina in season 3. Also, the ending with Mama B was pretty predictable. Next ep looks great!
Another thing I forgot to say is that while this ep was very enjoyable and my favorite this season so far, I still think this season is weak so far. There is no real drama, tension and urgency anymore. The Mama B storyline is not that exciting so far for me, or is maybe that the execution hasn’t been the best. Dunno what it is. Hope things change.
Don’t worry stargazer you aren’t alone in the Algon romance (I think that’s what they call it, I’m not sure :?) I haven’t been liking it myself either. But after Casey had given his blessing ( and because he’s my favorite) I’ll tolerate it for his sake not for Morgan nor Alex.
Can someone explain why I keep getting thumbs down just because of Morgan and Alex’s romance? I mean seriously does the punishment fit the crime only because of a romance that I don’t like but I’ll tolerate? I’m not angry I’m just curious that’s all.
Yeah, something looks off about that romance; I dunno if it’s the actors that aren’t really trying Or the way they are directed and/or written. I have to be honest, but I don’t think the directors in this show are that good. Or maybe they don’t even have to time to reshoot the scenes due to the budget cuts. Dunno. I just have the impression that the good acting comes mainly from the actors themselves because they are so dedicated.
Hey stargazer I just thought of something, between you and me I think we need to lay off the negative side of Chuck for a little while, lay low, and see how things go before making more judgements. Doesn’t help the show or the other fans if we do it it’s liking tearing things down. What d’ya say? Game?
Why? Look, I’m happy NBC gave the show 11 more episodes to work with, because I have enjoyed the show so much ever since I started watching last year. However, I think it’s my right as a fan to say what I liked or didn’t like about an episode. I don’t see anything wrong with that. I just hope the showrunner are paying attention and realize that they can improve some things in the show.
Ok ok just being a friend and there’s no need to be touchy, it was just a suggestion. Sorry I brought it up. And I’m not telling you not to give your opinions at all ok? We good now?
I was never upset. You’re still cool to me. 🙂
That’s a relief. 🙂
I feel like this episode really looked backward toward season 2, which is awesome! I was glad to get a break from CS drama for at least a week. I’m a little anxious to see what their fight is all about in 4.07 but after seeing the preview for 4.06 I feel it most likely has to do with MamaB and Sarah’s gun pointing match, but who knows.
I really like Morgan and Casey as a team, although I think Casey getting to save Morgan once would be good for the show. I feel like Ellie would also be a good addition to the spy world. I think my least favorite part of this season so far was in 4.01 when Chuck didn’t tell Ellie the truth AGAIN!
When looking at the next episode, I tend to think when MamaB says “I did what I came here to do” means she needed to fake kill Chuck so Volkoff would get off her back about their faction- or some variation of that
Another great review, Lou! Now I understand exactly what you mean when you speak of mission related stories versus Chuck and Sarah driven stories and I agree with you. I would say that this was the best episode of the season and really did harken back to what made the series so fun in seasons one and two. I hope we get more just like this one. It was a keeper!
Was anyone else kind of surprised that Morgan’s eulogy wasn’t funnier? I thought there was such an opportunity there for him to lay the ground work for telling Casey about himself and Alex. Or perhaps honor him to the point of Casey getting angry and risk blowing his cover. He was just kind of babbling. Well, I’m rewatching tonight. Maybe I misread this scene.
I found it grating to tell you the truth and I was like ”Morgan shut up or please someone tranq him or he’ll blow the gaff.” I like Morgan as well as the next fan, but his babbling gets annoying at times.
Sorry to interrupt the theme of this thread, but GREAT/AWESOME “CHUCK” NEWS being reported by out friends at TVBYTHENUMBERS.
CHUCK has received an order for 11, yes, ELEVEN additional episodes for Season 4, bringing the total up to 24 episodes – the “biggest” CHUCK season yet.
Congratulations to Mel and to everyone at this web site and other CHUCK-promoting sites and blogs -and to ALL “Chuckaholics” out there.
It’s PARTY time! BRING ON THE CHUCK – all 24 episodes of Season 4!!!
Yeeeehaaaaaa!!!!
You could have at least made some small review comment.
Bad form. 😉
I wouldn’t say that this episode rated amongst the best of season 4 so far but then again I loved the episodes that focused more on Chuck and Sarah. That said, I don’t expect every episode to centre around them and I know that there has to be some episodes that focus on the spy stuff in order to progress the story. I only hope that other fans who enjoy these type of episodes are gracious enough not to critisize future episodes that do focus more on Chuck and Sarah. That’s the beauty of this show, throughout the season there will be something for everyone.
Agreed. I love to see Chuck & Sarah loving couple. Sure there will be up and downs in the relationship (but not to break up ..bad for the series) that’s normal in real life. More hugging and kissing between Chuck & Sarah please. Cute couple.
Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble but Morgan ruined what should have been a great episode. The set-up was great, looked forward to the episode but Morgan couldn’t deliver. His ‘Barney Fife’ act is getting really boring, as evidenced by the eulogy. Its not working, there is no way a woman as hot as Alex would find him attractive. Sorry, thumbs down.
I agree with Jas101 – ” that’s the beauty of this show… there’s something for everyone.” CHUCK is so entertaining and on so many different levels. Cheers to the cast, writers, producers and crew! You are giving us a great show!
A solid, intense mission that helped to heighten the humor. I knew that you would like this episode Lou. Just wished we could see your smile. Interesting that Chuck now seems to know so much about Tetrododoxin after telling Fulcrum agent Vincent in Predator that surviving its effects sounded like a fun class.
So if Casey was the A-Team then does that mean that Packard=Hannibal, T.I.=BA, MacIntosh=Murdock and Casey=Face?
No Casey=Hannibal Packard=Face.
Couch Lock and Cubic Z are both top 10 episodes of all time with Couch Lock a little better after opening the season with 2 sub par episodes the season is really steping it up.
This was a very entertaining episode and everything made sense. This season is really coming together! Great review and everyone pretty much hit the nail on the head with their reviews. 🙂
This is one of my favourite all time Chuck episodes for me it was as close to perfection as I think you can get for a TV show.
The only thing in my mind that would have made this episode better is another scene of Sarah trying on bikinis. LOL
I don’t think I can argue any of the points you made.
I’m giving up on keeping a top 10 list of Chuck episodes. It’s just impossible too many great episodes.
Instead Im going to go to a top 50 episodes for now. It will be up to a top 75 by the end of the season – now that we have the back order for 11 more episodes.
Just proves your point about how great this episode is Lou.
I loved one of Morgan’s quotes from the eulogy. “Somewhere out there. . . beneath the pale moonlight. . .” -An American Tail
That was hands down the best episode yet of season 4. Everything just clicked and felt like season 2 or even season 1 in all their fun epicness. 🙂
Casey was awesome as usual and I always love Casey centered episodes this one was no exception. AB’s talent continues to amaze me. with his facial expressions, his beautiful blue eyes and his natural badassery. 😉 I just love it. I have to admit his face was kinda scary during the scene where Morgan tells him he’s dating Alex, if I were Morgan I’d be hightailing it for the hills the little man’s got balls.
I can’t wait to see what the awesome’s are going to name their baby. I hope it’ll be Mary after Mama B, maybe it might happen if… you know, something happens to Mother Bartowski in the end.
This episode was awesome and next week may even top it. We’ll see. 🙂 I laughed so hard and often something that hasn’t happened during the last four episodes.
Oh man, I loved this episode. I was watching the first four and just going “c’mon Morgan episode”. And here, I like Casey, but Casey-centrics are usually “eh” to me. With Morgan though? Oh gosh, so hilarious, so good.
Now we need a Jeff/Lester-heavy episode. 2×05 was like, the best thing ever. Although, I’m looking forward to the holiday episodes too, they’re normally a riot and a half.
I think this was the best or second best episode of the season. (Anniversary is the other contender for me.) Having all four principle members of the spy team all together and playing against each other with other major characters dancing around that plot makes for a great episode. Current Morgan is great to play off against how Chuck used to be. And the Chuck/Sarah stuff was much better handled here than recently. Just the level of it felt more organic to how we’ve seen them previously. At least it was better than three episodes of it in a row. Next weeks looks just flat out amazing too. This waiting stuff is nuts.
One complaint though… not really a complaint really… Morgan and Alex are really cute together. But they have between an eight and a ten year gap between them. That seems… I don’t know. They make it work though.
I think the desert shots in the beginning was a nod to Dune.
Just saying, Tron had its run, time to get serious. Ala Dune.
I got more of a Three Kings vibe. Since it was about the same plot.
Morgan did reference the Bene Gesserit litany against fear from Dune once. He was quoting it to Casey, who seemed to think he was just being wise.
Now that there was a family dinner in this season and a Chuck and Sarah fountain scene, I’m ready for a triple-date back at the sushi restaurant… Awesome and Ellie, Chuck and Sarah AND Morgan and Alex!
Let’s see Casey’s reaction to all the love going around 🙂
THIS IS AWESOME!!! I LOVED all the Casey/Morgan scenes, with Casey glaring at Morgan during the eulogy, the Stormtrooper helmet, the mid-air strangle, the “Name: Morgan Expertise: None” placard, EVERYTHING WAS JUST WONDERFUL!! By the way, congratulations on the full season pickup, this calls for a Subway Bartowski Special (Ham, American Cheese, Lettuce, Mayonaise, and Green Pepper, all on White Bread, which works out perfectly due to the fact that the Buy More colors are all there) ON ME!!
“You Break Her Heart, I Break Your EVERYTHING.”
-Col. John Casey
This is why I love “Chuck”
This was hands down the best episode of the season for me! I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so hard!
Casey + Morgan = me LMAO
I’ve been pleased with this season so far, but this episode just put me over the top!
It may have to go on my list of top 10 episodes of the whole series.
This show brings me so much joy and laughter. I’m so glad I have it to look forward to every week….and more weeks than we originally thought! Yay!
Woot!
Am I the only one who thought this episode was a HUGE letdown. I was so excited after 4 great or perfect episodes, then all of a sudden a lethargic, terribly scripted and unimaginative plot comes along. The dialogue was AWFUL! Dont get me wrong im as big a fan of the show as anyone on this forum, but to me this episode just lacked the usual UMPH that usually flows naturally from the cast and their chemistry. Terrible script, god awful dialogue, and unimaginable plot twists did it for me.
Oh AND a terrible waste of the 3 big name guest-stars. could have made this SOOOO much better but in the end it was just bad. Overall not terrible, but bad.
Morgan and Alex. No chemistry at all.
Casey respects Morgan giving his life for the team,so no dead Morgan but a warning,LOL. Like more C/S but I’m a shipper. Loved the A-team. Great news about 11 more shows,WOW.
Great review, Lou! Everyone got involved in the mission, the stakes got raised, there was greater attention paid to the mythology, and as a result, we got an amazing episode. Hopefully, the show has put the massive screw-up of the season’s first four episodes behind it and is heading into more interesting territory. If the rest of the season is this good, then we’re in for a real treat.
So this is the perfect episode, I would even go and say that this is the ebst episode of the season so far.
The previous kind of felt a little strange to me, I can’t explain why but this one I constantly had to pause the screen because I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so freaking awesome!
To me the scene where Casey tries to move his feet, is also a complete take on Kill Bill Vol.1! They couldn’t have done it better, and then the Star Wars helmet!
Nice review!
I love how at ease Chuck seems in spyworld. He is a super duper analyst and a decent spy and a great partner for Sarah inside his job and in his life. I love how Sarah is bringing her emotional attachment and trust into spyworld with Chuck. She relieves Chuck’s worries about endangering her and Casey by letting Chuck know she understands the risks inherent as spies but that they are a team and they are in this together.
I love this show. I seriously love it. I really enjoyed last night’s episode (not as much as the last two, but still enjoyed), but for some reason, the Morgan-Alex chemistry still seems a little bit off to me. I think they have chemistry, but I also think that what everyone is calling ‘non-chemistry’ might have to do with either how they are being directed or the plot.
For instance, I noticed that Morgan seems a bit…paternal? big-brotherly? toward Alex right now, rather than boyfriend-ish. I can’t tell if that is because he’s been afraid of Casey figuring out that they’re dating, or if that’s just the way he is around her. I hope not, because I think they’re adorable together, and I would love to see this new, maturer Morgan actually have a real relationship! (Besides Anna.)
I must’ve been watching a different episode than most of you. I thought it was BORING and have been disappointed with this season, even factoring in how prepared I was to not like it as much as season 3. Last season had so much character growth and change that there was no way this year could feel as satisfying to me, but I haven’t found any episode to be even “very good” so far.
To me, episodes 1, 2, & 4 were good, but nothing special. Episodes 3 & 5 were 2 of the weakest epsidoes of the last 2 years.
That said, I’m THRILLED about the 11 extra episodes!
