RECAP: Chuck versus the Aisle of Terror

Casey: “Chuck, how’d you get here?”
Chuck: “My mom dropped me off.”

Chuck has officially left the will-they-or-won’t-they problem behind. Now we’ve got a bigger problem: is she or isn’t she? (Before your mind goes to a dirty place, I’m talking about whether or not Chuck’s mom is a good spy or a bad spy.) All of that pales in comparison, though, to the real point of tonight’s episode: How To Get Along With Prospective And Actual In-Laws.

Morgan and His Girlfriend’s Dad (aka Casey)

These two are hilarious together, and that’s why they get first billing in tonight’s in-law lineup. Now that Casey has decided to permit Morgan to be with 100 yards of his daughter, he’s taken him under his wing, too. Sure, you could argue that using Morgan as bait (or “the magnet”) isn’t really helping him learn anything at all. But I like to think that Casey believes in the tough-love school of spydom. Besides, Morgan has started conversing in grunts just like Casey!

Morgan and His Mother’s Lover (aka Big Mike)

Okay, so this is a bit of a stretch: we only got one Morgan/Big Mike scene. But I don’t want to neglect El Segundo’s School of Finance’s most prestigious alumnus.

Ellie and Awesome’s Mom (aka Honey)

So this is how you make an Awesome cardiac surgeon: no to bears, yes to dictionaries. You also work in snarky comments about the cleanliness of kitchen cabinets. Despite Honey’s flaws, though, Ellie has a great attitude: one part amusement, one part rage, and one part gratitude. No matter what happens with Mama B, Ellie does have a great resource to help her learn the ins-and-outs of motherhood—you just know that Honey would love a frantic 4am phone call about ear infections and colic. There’s something to be said for that, all things considered.

Sarah, Mama B, and Chuck

One of my favorite things about Chuck is that there are very few surprises. Chuck gets shot? Yeah, he’ll be fine. His mom shot him? Oh, she didn’t mean it. This show is incredibly averse to messing up the status quo (it did take them three years to get Chuck and Sarah together), and I really doubted they’d sideline the eponymous hero. I expected this episode to have a few double- and triple-twists, but wind up with everyone coming together, even if it was just for a moment.

But I didn’t count on Casey’s and Sarah’s tenacity. They’re not just good at their jobs—they’re looking out for their friend. The revelation that Mama B really might be evil shocked me, especially since it meant that Chuck had to reveal more of the story to poor Ellie, who must be horrified by the world she keeps getting glimpses of. Sarah said she was looking out for Chuck’s blind spot, and that’s exactly what she’s doing. That won’t make it hurt any less if she’s right, though. And it might throw a real wrench into the works if she’s wrong and Chuck is forced to choose between his mother and his girlfriend.

Nothing To Do With In-Laws…

A constant tension on Chuck is how our hero can reconcile his inherently good, trusting nature with the deviousness and deception required of his lifestyle. Last week, we got hints that Chuck might be getting a bit more pragmatic. Tonight, Chuck explained his mother’s betrayal by telling Ellie that mom is a spy—on the face of it, that’s an obvious explanation. But is Chuck commenting on the nature of spy life? Does he see all spies as doomed to deception and double-crosses? Will his childhood abandonment issues cause him to deceive his “family” at Castle and the BuyMore, and Ellie?

…Although In-Laws Are Scary

I can’t believe that I’ve gotten this far without mentioning this episode’s main conceit: Robert Englund and the neurotoxin of terror. I’m not much of a horror fan, and I thought the nightmare sequences were a bit cheesy, especially since I assumed an antidote would emerge in due time. But I was amused by the aisle of terror. I also really liked that Wheelwright was just as horrified as Jeffster wanted everyone to be.

Bites:

• Morgan: “Not bad scary, like war, and bears.”

• Morgan: “Morgan Grimes, not just for the ladies any more.”

• Big Mike: “There’s even a catchy phrase: ‘Get it off your plate; give it to other people.’”
Morgan: “Don’t you mean, ‘Get it off your plate. Delegate’?”
Big Mike: “No, I do not. You are not a rhyming monkey.”

• Casey: “Two fugitives and a dangerous weapon on the loose. Go team.” This was sort of a weird line, coming from Casey.

• Honey: “Devin was amazing, right from the start. Amazing genes, I guess. Don’t you worry, this little wonder is half-way there.” What a great sneaky insult.

• Honey: “Babies love dictionaries.”

• Jeff: “Is it a baby, or a snail?”

And Pieces:

• In case you didn’t know, Robert Englund played Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

• I loved Sarah’s glasses when she was playing the maitre d’ at the restaurant.

• Did anyone else want Mama B to say “Come with me if you want to live” when she pulled up to Chuck behind the BuyMore?

This was a solid episode. After last week’s awesomeness, Chuck had a lot to live up to. This episode’s main conceit wasn’t the best ever (at least for me), but did a great job with character development and setting up tensions that will be, I assume, gradually resolved over the course of the season. There wasn’t too much BuyMore, but just enough. And all the plot threads did tie together, which was a neat trick. Or should I say, a nice treat?

Three out of four rhyming monkeys.

(I’ve got even more hilarious puns up my sleeve at billiedoux.com, where I review Chuck, Fringe, and the Vampire Diaries. C’mon over. I’ll give you candy.)

  1. I loved this episode! I am reminded once again how great this cast is and how believable they are as their characters. Linda Hamilton fitted in perfectly and i can’t wait to see what happens next!

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember Chuck flashing on anything. If that is correct, would this be the first episode ever not to have one?

  3. yeah probs, we are past the intersect, he can be a spy without it, now isnt that a nice ideayeah probs, we are past the intersect, he can be a spy without it, now isnt that a nice idea

    • Chuck's hardcore fan

But, one of the chuck main attraction is that he has the intersect in his brain. Make him different than other spy. Therefore, that will make him valuable to the Government as well as to the enemy. And make chuck series different than any other spy movies.

      • I think this was more about the emotion this episode which was still entwined with the spy stuff. Chuck really didn’t need to flash this episode, he wasn’t fighting and his mom already gave him all the info he needed.

  4. woops accident, sorry about that

  5. The episode was fine not as good as last week but I’ll let that slide.

If someone on the writers staff could eliminate Jeffster and shut Morgan up, things might be better off. That’s all.

  6. I was in love with this episode… lots of greatness to be enjoyed! Of all the great moments, is it weird that one of my faves was “Not bad scary – like war… and bears.”? LOL

  7. I liked it a lot. This looks like a big deciding time for Chuck and once again, a big lesson about his job. If he really is about to choose between his mum and Sarah, I am afraid he would choose his mum – maybe just because of Ellie. I wonder if he will tell her everything, including his work for CIA that he told her he quit.
Now, if someone could stop Morgan´s babbling and “I am a spy” impression, it would be good. Beside the emotional roller coaster going on with Chuck and his mom, he wasn´t funny, just distracting. I honestly don´t understand why Casey would take Morgan with him. He should want his daughter to be with someone outside the spy world. But I guess he doesn´t think like that. Anyway, this is the first episode, where I thought Morgan was more annoying than Jeff and Lester. And I really don´t like Jeff and Lester.

    • I agree about Morgan he’s been rather annoying lately. 😕

      • Yup figured I’d get a flame for that. But I could care less about points being or down so who ever’s doing go ahead.

    • Jesus Christ are you listening to yourself? To choose his mom instead Sarah. If he does that this would be the worst thing the scriptwriters could do. Three seasons Chuck and Sarah try to be together and you think he would think to say “Pack your bags and leave”. No way. I refuse to accept that and if this happens for real and Chuck and Sarah break up because of mamaB i will stop watching the show. Its ridiculous…

  8. I thought this was a strong episode, I always like the Holiday shows. Just want to add that I love Morgan and always look forward to anything about him in the show and also know soooo many people who think he is their favorite! Yeah, maybe the spy impersonating in the garage as the magnet was a little much but is exactly who he has been all along. I also love Jeffster, but have seen enough of Jeff without his shirt on-LOL! Still kind of struggling with how rough and scary Chuck’s mom is being portrayed – stay tuned right? I am loving all the Chuck show attention, actually previewed on Entertainment Tonight- what a shock, also the NBC PSA’s by Zach and Joshua, and the promo of Tangled! All just super!!

  9. The iPad projector was really random lol seemed a bit too futuristic
i was expecting to see more of Wheelwright and thought the nightmare toxin could have been done better, all that was shown was sarah getting shot and Wheelwrights face going green. I thought with all the Halloween props around that they could make it more nightmare-ish, like Scarecrow from Batman Begins.

The character development and tensions in the episode were really good though.
And also odd that there was no intersectness lol that could have tied well with the hallucinations.

  10. I loved this episode. I found it intense and packed full of great scenes. I have to disagree with those who find Morgan annoying. By end of S2 I would have agreed with geting rid of Morgan, but now I can’t imagine this show without him.

As for Jeff and Lester – when they are used well, their characters really add to the show, and the last few episodes they were used very well. Unfortunately, all to often I find myself not caring for the Jeff and Lester scenes, but I think that is more about the lines written for them rather than the characters.

    • I agree with Gord about Morgan.
Pre Beard he wasn’t one of my favorites but since he has been in on it he has vaulted to a tie for second with Casey.Sarah is #1.

  11. I enjoyed this episode, I really liked Linda Hamelton’s intergation in to the story and she fit well with the rest of the cast. Had a little more of the spy aspects in this story line which I also felt was a big improvment.

My only concerns at this point is that they are trying to do to much in 1 hour. (Lester, Casey-Morgan, Ellie-Awsome-Mother-in-law, Chuck-Mom, Chuck-Sarah-mom, and the guest star, though I thourougly enjoyed Robert England who really seems to have fun in his role)I like all of the characters, but I think they are losing a lot in the character develoment arena. Chuck-Sarah chemistry really is not there this year in my opinion, I definitly enjoy Casey being injected more into the plot. Would like to see more focus on characters and less on giving everyone screen time every week.

    • I agree about Linda Hamilton’s character in last night’s episode. She definitely added to the spy aspect of the show and she has me intrigued.
As for the concerns of fitting so much into one hour, I think that with what they originally had thought was only going to be 13 episodes for the season, the creators of the show are trying to move the storyline along rather quickly, but at the same time, trying to incorporate all the characters so we don’t lose them along the way. I think that if they knew that they had 24 episodes, there would be more time to spend on individual characters and their relationships with each other.
I am enjoying the relationship of Chuck and Sarah right now. They seem more and more comfortable with each other. With the angst of will they/won’t they gone, we can focus more on moving the story of Chuck and his mythology along. I have to say though, I am looking forward to whatever confrontation Chuck and Sarah may have next week. I think that is when Zac and Yvonne really shine as actors and bring life to Chuck and Sarah.
All in all, I really enjoyed this episode as it keep me guessing with some humor thrown in there.

  12. Ok I liked the episode but it didn’t feel smooth like last week. We’ll leave it at that.

Mama B is a fun loose cannon and I’m enjoying her story. C/S have serious problems to deal with now and the least Chuck could’ve done was bring the teddy bear to Ellie.

Morgan, Jeffster, BuY More and the evil scientiest were the episodes weakest points. That’s my honest opinion and I’m standing by it. Sue me.

    • i was thinking the same thing about the bear even if he had just picked it up and left it again it

    • The “Chuck Optical Illusion” phenomenon: when so many elements of the show are so utterly breathtaking, the other elements pale by comparison, even if taken on their own merits they did not fail as badly as they seemed to.

  13. awww 🙁 where did my post go??

  14. This was an interesting episode. I am not big on scary stuff but did enjoy the special effects. I still think it’s too soon to tell whether Mama B is on the good or bad side; seeing there will be 11 new episodes I am assuming the writers will keep us guessing.

Jeff/Lester & Morgan: sometimes they use these characters in great ways and sometimes they fall short. I feel that Morgan smothers the spy scenes with his unnecessary rants and I would like him to go back to being a buymoron. Jeff/Lester episode 4.05 they killed me this week they were just ok, not great, jut ok. Linda Hamilton LOVE her. She is a great addition to the show and she brings a different feel to the show. She is bad @$$!

My biggest disappointment: Sarah’s choice at the end. I must admit that I was rather surprised by Sara’s choice. I was hoping she would have stayed out of it and not involve herself in the take down of Mama B; seeing as it is a conflict of interest. Now that we have a huge C/S conflict I am hoping that they don’t resolve it with sweet nothings and a smile. After watching the trailer for next and not be shown any C/S interaction leaves me wondering? Will Sarah be out on the couch or will she be back in her old hotel suite? So I can’t wait for next Monday. Chuck is my favorite show on TV!!

  15. The song at the end of e episode (Dead Hearts by Stars) fit so well so i went and listened to the lyrics. It fit so well with what all the Bartowski’s were feeling and made a wonderful scene. I almost cryed for Ellie at the end of that episode=(

  16. I think I’m getting some kind of Pavlovian reaction to the Grinding Music of Doom now. (The music that played when Casey and Sarah captured MamaB at the end.) It makes me go all “Oh, noes!” and everything. Really makes a tense situation more nerve-wracking. Go Tim Jones!

    Fun review! Thanks! 😉

  17. I liked the plot the ep jus was a little too creepy for me

  18. OH NO!!!! Chuck is no longer TV guide’s cover poll nr.1.

We are SECOND!!!! LETS VOTE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We cannot lose this cover!!

  19. Great review, at first I didn’t think that this was a good episode(, it still has its flaws) but you definitely made me see the bright side of it 🙂

  20. I think that chuck is going to break up with sarah for what she did because no matter what they found out about his mother they should have talked to Chuck first before kidnapping her. Or they could’ve at least waited until Mama B talked to Ellie before getting her. At least that is what i would do if they did that to me.

  21. Good review except for the order of the pairings. I still believe that this is about Sarah and her relationship issues. She loves Chuck but doesn’t understand his humanity. She never learned that love can only be given unconditionally and sometimes you have to let people do the things they are going to do to themselves. Just like when she tells her dad to go get her some ice cream, she knew that he was just a grifter and not some dangerous spy. In this episode, she reacts by becomimg SuperSpy, and she won’t be able to understand why Chuck won’t be happy that she saved his life. Chuck isn’t Bryce, and that is the only example of what she has to go on. Bryce would have understood. As far as the Casey/ Morgan relationship, just not buying it.
