RATINGS: “Chuck vs. the First Fight” Rises

The fast overnights are in and Chuck inched up that important 18-49 advertiser demo. Approximately 5.4 million people tuned in to watch Timothy Dalton, Linda Hamilton and Ana Gasteyer throw down with our heroes. The episode pulled a 2.0 in the demo, back to season premiere numbers after holding steady at a 1.9 for the last 4 weeks. What a great way to kick off November sweeps!

Note: we had reports of preemptions in the Saint Louis market for local election specials; how that will factor into the final overnight results remains to be seen.

  1. Hooray for Chuck!

  2. So we’re up in rating but not on next week to take advantage of them, nice.

    • Wow, that’s record time for a wet blanket on a celebratory post. Congrats.

      • Im happy we’re up and that we had a great episode but I just wish we got another next week to take advantage of this weeks success so that the new people dont forget and watch something else in two weeks.

      • That’s record time in twisting a legitimate concern into something negative. Congrats

      • I’m just saying it would be nice if, for once, we could celebrate a victory for more than 10 minutes before the negative comments begin.

      • ok everyone calm we sound like we’re getting defencive too quickly. we all love the show, and enjoyed the episode here and would have liked more chuck next week. so everyone stay be brave wait for the signs

      • typo (stay calm be brave wait for the signs

      • I guess it comes down to what you view as negative. I saw it as a very valid concern you didn’t. Its not that big of a deal.

      • See I agree. It’s actually a very well thought out comment. He’s just sayin this–“woo hoo! Chuck is up in ratings!!!!! (: too bad we cant take advantage of that next week…”

  3. That’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Go Chuck!!

  4. As 1+1=2, a steady 2.0 for CHUCK during Season 4 = SEASON 5 !! 🙂

  5. Wait for the finals, there’s word of Chuck having been preempted in some areas. It was for political debates so I doubt it will have a big impact, but depending on just how close it was to the 1.9 line it could drop back down. Worst case should still be “steady” though.

As for overall trends, Chuck matched NBC’s average rating by show last week, was above NBC’s average hourly rating last week (for the second week in a row) and was only 0.05 behind their scripted average (0.7 at the start of the season). It’s worth noting that NBC aired re-runs of both Law & Order series last week instead of new episodes, but they also aired a Shrek Halloween special on Thursday that seems to have boosted their entire comedy block for the night.

  6. GREAT!!! episode, what a twist. Glad the numbers are up, too bad we have to wait two weeks for next episode?

  7. Yeah! A 2.0 in the demo. To bad we have a week break before another episode of CHUCK. Hopefully it will reamain a 2.0 after this little break or better yet, maybe it will get higher. Does anyone else find it odd that we have a week break, then a new episode, and then a whole month of no new episodes? Pray this doesn’t effect our steady demo ratings because I really, REALLY, want a season 5. Then again, I’m sure I’m not the only one here who wants a fifth season. 😉

    • I believe we’ll have 3 more episodes in November before the normal December break, so it’s not quite as bad as you’re thinking. 🙂

      • Hey Mel, sometime before Thanksgiving can we have a Top Ten (or even five) things that we are thankful for regarding Chuck? While there is always room for improvement and some of us Chucksters wish for a little more of less of this or that I’m thinking that we have ample reasons this season to be thankful regarding Chuck.

      • It’s already in the works. 🙂

      • 3 episodes. thank god! maybe I can it make it through the month break. 🙂

    • sorry if this comes off crude but the first thing i thought of when i found out about the week lay off is a line from a movie zach was in……..and that G.D Matt Lauer ….. if u havent seen it its called shades of ray good movie

  8. I’ve been lurking more than posting this season but I’m every bit as enthusiastic about the show & was so elated to see this post! I’m so happy–I loved this episode & was thinking that the writers really ‘got their groove on’ now with all the twists & turns that make ‘CHUCK’ so fun to watch. Awesome to see that the ratings are up, even if slightly–every bit helps. 🙂

  9. In some ways having to wait till November 15th for the next episode could be a good thing. If NBC release some promos over the next two weeks it might get the new viewers all hyped up for the next episode. Just one way of looking at it. I don’t love the break but we’ve gotta look on the bright side Chuck fans. Slow and steady wins the race to season 5!

  10. This is especially great since Chuck also competed with the world series!

  11. some guy named john

Chuck usually grabs a few more viewers with Live + 7 info. So expect a 2.1 or 2.2.

    • Anything past Live +SD means pretty much nothing though. Live +7 is a feel-good metric that is only useful in writing press releases. It does absolutely nothing for the renewal chances of a show.

  12. I have it on good authority that the show came really, really close to a 2.1. St. Louis preemption probably made the difference.

  13. Such an amazing episode deserved a bump in the ratings. Lets hope this is only the beginning of a trend. 3.0 by season finale? I think we can.

  14. Final numbers are in, and “Chuck” holds the 2.0 with any adjustment from St Louis being too small to matter.

  15. In the St Louis area the preempted Chuck episode will be shown Monday November
8th 12:30AM to 1:30AM CDT for those who missed it. What would be better for those who have access to a computer who wish to view in live+7 days to count
in the ratings evaluation NBC.com, Hula, or other means to watch the show.
For thos who don’t own computers go to your local libraries to watch on their
computers within the the 7 day viewing time for it to count, thanks.

    • I’m confused. I thought Nov. 8 was the day it was preempted. Are you saying that the episode will simply air at a later time on that day? I though being preempted meant that it wasn’t going to air at all.

  16. Trust us, EVERYONE in the St. Louis area was VERY upset about Chuck being pre-empted without warning! There were many calls lodged in complaint to KSDK…all I can say is I’m still glad the ratings turned out well!
