Well now I know how the Whos of Whoville felt. NBC has pulled the Chuck repeats that were scheduled for December 20 and 27. Instead, December 20 will feature an expanded finale of the surprisingly highly rated The Sing-Off followed by a sneak of their new sitcom, Perfect Couples. On December 27 they’ll air their made-for-TV movie A Walk in Her Shoes.
Why, you ask? Because The Sing-Off is getting unexpectedly good ratings so they’re going to get as much mileage out of it as possible by adding a half hour to the show, then attempting to use that as a springboard for a new sitcom. Not a bad play considering everything else is in reruns and NBC actually has a decent number of eyeballs on them without all the competition. The movie airing the following week also grabbed some decent ratings, so reairing it – a standalone film as opposed to a series – might garner better ratings than a trio of repeats from a series. As much as it pains me to admit that.
Bah humbug.
P.S. Happydayz will be hosting a rewatch on those nights, so there will still be some Chuck in the air. New episodes return January 17.
That is NOT good news…not necessarily horrible news. But not good at all
Damn you,NBC.
It was a great chance to bring new people to the show.
Who the heck watched that crappy sing off show?? Like there isn’t enough of those kinds of shows! I want to be entertained. I WANT MY CHUCK!! I miss my boys! Even in reruns Chuck is the best!!
I was really looking forward to Santa Claus :/
So its official NBC has put the Grinch in charge of programming.
Please somebody tell me this announcement is somebody’s idea of a practical joke.
Wow NBC. That’s just low. Way to screw us over once again. I honestly don’t think they appreciate Chuck and its fans for all it’s worth. NBC should really step back, take a look, and realize what’s actually good for them. Viva la nerdolution!
Don’t get too down, peeps. Let’s face it, it’s a smart business decision for NBC. I’m sure they never expected “Sing Off” to be so popular – and since it is, they’re going to use it however they can to promote that new show. (Unfortunately, it seems like most new scripted shows on NBC crash quickly, at least over the past few seasons. And as much as I’m interested in their other new show that starts in January – The Cape – with our friend Summer Glau, I doubt it’s going to garner a major audience. I fear it, too may go the way of many recent NBC shows).
Let’s not jump down NBC’s throats. After all, they’re giving us 14 more BRAND NEW episodes of CHUCK starting on Jan. 17th. FOURTEEN MORE EPISODES OF OUR FAVORITE PROGRAM TO ENJOY. That’s more than some show’s entire season order of episodes (13).
So yes, it is somewhat of a downer, but not a major one. Just focus on Jan. 17th and let’s keep those ratings at least at a 2.0 and hopefully higher!!
I know what you mean, Rick, but all the same, I know I speak for a lot of people when I say that when we as fans pour our hearts into promoting Chuck any way we can, it’s awfully darn frustrating when it seems like NBC could do a lot more to promote the show, and then they don’t.
Hi Matt. Maybe it’s because when NBC DID really promote CHUCK in past seasons (like the 3D episode of Season 2 the day after the Superbowl) and the MANY promos ahead of Season 3’s January premiere, it never actually helped. Even Chuck fans acknowledge that 3D was a very weak episode which essentiallY “blew the golden opportunity” to hook new viewers. And not to beat a dead horse, but as a result of Season 3’s rather heavy promotion by NBC, we started off with a 3.0 in the demo – a pretty good pick up in the number of fans. Unfortunately, Season 3 was not very good, and the number of fans dropped continually until we wound up ending with around a 1.7 or 1.8 in the demo. It’s unfortunate that the Season 4 story arc wasn’t what we had insted of the Season 3 story arc. I think THIS season would have kept most, if not all, of any new fans we would have picked up.
Bottom line, when NBC has promoted CHUCK fairly strongly, either the episode or the entire story arc that the “new viewers” saw, didn’t leave them wanting to see more. I think NBC is basically “done” with putting promotion behind CHUCK and we pretty much need to acknowledge that. They know CHUCK is going to be around a 2.0 in the demo ratings, and now into it’s fourth season, it’s not going to grow significantly in the ratings. So from their perspective, why promote it??
I’m just happy they gave us our largest episode number season yet – 24 for season 4. We should be happy with that and hope that if everything falls into place we’ll get a fifth season. Truthfully, I don’t think a two year old rerun on Dec. 20th and three episodes back to back to back on Dec. 27th – when I doubt a lot of people will be watching TV – would “grab” a big number of new viewers – at least not a big enough number to make a difference in the ratings.
It would have been nice to watch “Santa Claus” again – and also the “Mini-Chuck-Marathon,” but in the end I don’t think it would made much of a difference.
On the other hand, Zach or Yvonne “breaking out” in a movie (that features THEM, and not just their voice over) could go a long way to help grow the ratings. I believe the guy who stars in “The Office” was in “The 40 year old Virgin” and several other movies including a recent “spy-comedy” with Tina Fey. THAT helps draw viewers to the TV shows that these actors regularly appear in. That’s one reason I would LOVE to see Yvonne star in “Wonder Woman” if that movie project ever gets off the ground. Die her hair black and she would be PERFECT for it.
Rick, your first paragraph is a very good example of a very, very unfortunate pattern/trend that I’ve noticed. Every time NBC decides to promote the show, F&S make a big mistake and don’t create an episode/season that will hook new viewers (season 3 fits this description way, way too well). Then, whenever F&S get everything right (season 4), NBC doesn’t promote the show at all. As far as I know, these 2 patterns have never been corrected and now I’m afraid it’s too late to correct them.
Hmmm…yes, NBC is still giving us 14 more episodes of Chuck so I find it hard to be too bitter–but seriously guys, what is it with people and reality singing TV shows? Really? I watch TV because I want a momentary escape /from/ reality where someone else has already determined the storyline (and it sure doesn’t hurt when it has spys, intersects and morgan).
Silly people, when will they learn? =)
I was more surprised that the repeats were scheduled in the first place than by NBC’s change of strategy.
I’m just a little disappointed because I was hoping they’d promo the upcoming episodes during the repeats. Now, I see less likelihood we’ll see any promos any time soon.
I’m really jonesing for a glimpse of what’s to come. Why do breaks in the middle of seasons always seem harder than breaks between seasons?
Okay you can’t hear me now but I am singing “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch” replacing “Mr. Grinch” with “NBC”
such a bummer. i was looking forward to watching the repeats, especially Santa Claus. i have the dvds, but it just feels different on tv with the nbc logo on the screen. 😛
I don’t live in de USA so I don’t really recieve NBC ^^ (Unfortunately). But I know that those talent shows are popular for some reason even here in Holland. It’s not really my call, so I don’t understand all the popularity. But the fact stays that NBC is a commercial company, and the only thing they really think of is profits, and if a show has good ratings it probably means they will earn more money by airing it hehe ^^. NBC doesn’t air chuck out of the goodness of their hearts, I mean it’s business :(. I hope chuck will get better ratings the next half of the season though 😀 that would be AWSOME.
Darn it ! I was looking forward to seeing Santa Claus. I don’t have the dvd for that. The season 4 repeats though I can still watch, I’ve been copying it to dvd.
NBC can do what they want….BUT so will I!! I WON’T be watching!!!
Sad but not surprising. NBC seems to tolerate rather than embrace “Chuck”. If they had something to replace it with, they would. In this case, they did.
Let’s be honest; if “Chuck” had a 3.0 rating every week, we would get promos and reruns.
I just hope that the 24 episodes order this season doesn’t mean that it’s the swan song for “Chuck”! Like enough episodes to end the show well. Because lets be honest; “Chuck” has saved NBC from being mediocre these last 4 seasons!
And it’s a logical business decision to promote a show that has good ratings, and quite frankly, even if they’re a dime a dozen, “Sing off” is not bad.

This is how I’m feeling right now. FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA……
Happy holidays anyway, fellas.
NBC listen! Don’t turn into Fox now and start cancelling shows before they end naturally. I still hope, that the ratings go up enough for them to realize it still has potential.. Chuck is the best show ever! Wake up NBC.
I have mixed feelings here. First, it is somewhat less disappointing that we lost the Santa Claus episode. Let’s face it, that one is 2 years old now. It is more disappointing that NBC chose not to show the 3-hour Chuck fest of three season-four episodes. This could have served to bring in more viewers. Season four has been really good so far…
Having said this, I prefer to keep my eye on the prize which is that we still have 14 more new episodes to come. Thankfully, NBC has not changed that.
Finally, I am most disappointed in the preferences of the viewing public. The singing/dancing shows are very popular but I find them to be unwatchable (as are many other shows on TV)…
There is only one word I want to say right now. Its a four letter word that begins with “F” and ends with a “ck.” Needless to say, I was really looking forward to some CHUCK repeats so I get over the fact that I have to wait till January to see a New CHUCK ep. Mondays are once again depressing and boring. -sigh- Until CHUCK comes back on the air of course.
Let’s face it, these talent shows are of the moment, while a show of the calibre of “Chuck” is for the ages. I forgot half the winners of American Idol until someone mentioned them to me. It reads like a list of “Where are they now”. “Chuck” will be a classic years from now, where the cast will get together for a 20th anniversary re-union. “Chuck” will figure into TV history as the show that changed how a show’s popularity is gauged, albeit probably too late to appreciate it now. This is where the Neilsens will be proven less relevant than previously thought and the alternative media sources will prove to be the key to reaching the prime demographic.
No worries guys :)! You can watch Chuck online too right ?
This is redikulous! nbc doesnt give us the love and attention our show deserves! grrrr! now ive got to deal with another boring old monday…
i figured something like that would happen so ive started my own chuck marathon with my blurays 1-3 and 4 on the dvr to fill my time until jan 17th
and now im taking back the nice things i recently stated about NBC and am returning to my negatve attitude. tsk tsk NBC, why are you so mean?
Chuck repeats have been returned to the primetime schedule on 12/27 for now. http://bit.ly/fMxFxQ
