Chuck Increases 29% With DVR Ratings Included

The Live+7 DVR Ratings for the week of November 22 have been released, and Chuck received a significant increase in viewers as a result. The November 23 episode, “Chuck vs. Phase Three”, pulled in the lowest live ratings of the series, much to our chagrin as it was a truly amazing episode. However, when those DVR ratings are added, it saw a 29% boost, the eleventh highest of any show for the week. With those additional viewers, “Phase Three” went from a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo to a much more respectable 2.2 in the demo.

While the Live+7 ratings don’t mean much to most networks and advertisers, NBC does have a history of taking those numbers into account when making renewal decisions.

  1. NBC and all the other broadcast media will need to take alternative media sources into account if they want to stay on top of their prized 18-49 demo. I think they already have a clue at NBC, as they are constantly plugging NBC.com during TV commercial breaks. I can see the day where the distinction will vanish, and TV and computer will merge into one delivery system, accessible by ones choice of cable or satellite delivery. Given a choice, I watch NBC shows on their website, rather than, say, Hulu, to make it easier for NBC to track my interest.

  2. The networks really need to change their concept of viewers. Product placements are become much more valuable with DVR’d and even pirated content. Interstitial advertising is becoming irrelevant as it’s frequently skipped or edited-out, making traditional ratings irrelevant. The networks need to shift their advertising revenue to placement ads, which remain with the content indefinitely, no matter how or where it’s viewed. Since Chuck already has many placement ads and they are well integrated into the content, it should do better than many other shows in effectiveness.

  3. This was the episode against the dwts final so if i remember everything got hammered that night. Great new that it had such an uplift it definately deserved it.

  4. Chuck vs Phase three deserves it..This is by far the best episode for season 4 IMO.

  5. Viewers that missed episode 4.09 really missed out on some great entertainment. Sarah, of course carried the episode but there is no doubt there was a tremendous amount of work by a lot of people in bringing everything together. This episode was better than just good!!! I would like to see that proposal and even a wedding coming about in the near future.

  6. Nice to see DVRs are being counted. I have watched Chuck since it started and I have had night classes this whole year so DVR is my viewing support.

    • Pulling for Sarah!

I know where your coming from. I go to school part time so the only way I can watch is by computer. I’m usually up at 4am to watch as soon as NBC puts it up at 4:15am Central.

  7. kinda sad that phase 3 got so little viewers since in my opinion it was one of the best episodes so far.. but nevertheless chuck vs the leftovers got like 6.17 million viewers.

  8. This is great news. Nice to see that good tv actually did ok against the stupid DTWS finale. Such mainstream reality trash. This is just more glaring evidence of the insane competition Chuck has to deal with. This is so cool to see because the live ratings for Phase 3 were so low (season low, I believe), but once the DVR ratings are accounted for, it gets the highest rating of the season, which Phase 3 more than deserved. It was definitely the best episode of the season so far and quite possibly the best of the series to date. Thank god for DVR’s and the internet. I happen to know that Nielsen’s sample size (the ratio of how many people have Nielsen boxes out of the total population) is insanely pathetic. It’s like 1 in 4000 something. I can’t believe that the industry actually uses this ridiculous system.
