RATINGS: “Chuck vs. the Push Mix” Hits Ratings Low

The fast overnight ratings are in and somehow Chuck hit a season low with last night’s amazing episode. “Chuck vs. the Push Mix” pulled a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo with approximately 5.5 million viewers tuned in. Could the winter storm hitting a large portion of the country be to blame? The Cape also hit series lows with a 1.5 rating, although Harry’s Law bounced back with a 2.1. Perhaps the final numbers will give us more insight.

  1. Wow… how is that possible?! I’m mystified. All I can say is, those who didn’t watch, missed possibly the best “Chuck” ever! Hopefully the numbers adjust up some, and we bounce back next week!

    • I agree that people who tuned out missed one of the best Chucks yet. The final 15 minutes were great. It was very much a “Chuck is back!” moment. On par with the end of Season 2 when we first heard Chuck say “I know kung fu.”

But sometimes a weak rating isn’t due to the episode in question as much as the prior weeks. And just looking at the dialoge at this fansite the past few weeks, I would say there’s a good number of people (myself included) who didn’t think the weeks leading up to last night were some of the best. But last night paid off nicely. What a great wrap to that story arc.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store for us.

  2. I’m blaming the “blizzard of the century”. The grocery stores were packed with people trying to make sure they have enough to take them through the rest of the week. Gas stations had lines out into the streets with people making sure they were completely gassed up in case they got stuck somewhere. I bet those numbers rise as the week progresses with snowed-in viewers that have nothing else to do but watch “Chuck”!

  3. I find it amazing that Chuck didn’t do better! Maybe due to weather conditions, maybe some Neilson families were without electric? Hopefully, once people catch all the twitter coverage–and get their electric back–the +7 will recover. It’s hard for me to believe that a reality show–especially that one–would get good numbers.

  4. Honest to God, I just don’t get this! What more can we do that we aren’t already doing?

  5. Total demo viewership (across all networks) WAS down ~14% from last week.

  6. There was a bad ice storm last nite so I’m sure a lot of people lost power.. Maybe that could be a reason

  7. This is what happens when they run a weak episode the week before a big episode. As Chuck becomes more inconsistant with the quality of the episodes the ratings start to do the same.

  8. I think…I….just…died…a…little…
How could the ratings be so low when last nights ep was so AWESOME. 2012, the End of the World has already begun. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. After a high a week ago to this? Weird. But I have to say, as good as the episode was last night, there was almost zero buildup story-wise in terms of suspense. They keep talking about the cable model, but if you look at HBO for example, the plotting builds steadily to a crescendo. That wasn’t the case for these first 13. As much as I enjoy this show and I LOVED Timothy Dalton’s guest turn, Volkoff never felt like a threat. I never thought I’d say this, but their most well-realized villian (of the three they’ve had) is Fulcrum.

But still, that aside, kind of odd that the ratings would go down this much.

  10. I also noticed that NBC promo’d the show less aggressively than in the last couple of weeks. The previous ratings were decent. Now the promos are down and the ratings are down. This Jekyll-and-Hyde approach on the part of NBC is frustrating. They can be their own worst enemy at times.

    • My sentiments exactly Dr. Bob. Very little if any promotion for the Push Mix. Rather surprising considering that NBC has been trying to promote their new shows and a little promotion of this episode would have conceivably helped out the others.

  11. I don’t understand, it was such a great episode last night. The storm did hit the Mid west hard last night, snow storm just hit New England around 9 this morning. But nothing good on Tv tonight. But Chuck vs the Push Mix was a stellar episode & felt like Chuck S2 humor mixed with S3 Action.

  12. That’s a damn shame! This was one of my favorite episodes! I know we say that after every episode, but I thought this one really brought it home. I can see how they were preparing for only a 13 episode season, this would have probably been a season high if that was the case. So many things I liked I can’t even mention them all.

I’m just going to say, JEFFSTER! Hahaha! Greatest moment of them since their “Africa” tribute. I couldn’t stop laughing, so grossly inappropriate and RIGHT for them lol.

  13. Very nervous at this point. Just as the ratings were starting to have some consistency to them this happens. Snow or not I hope the Live =7 ratings give me and Nbc something to smile about.

  14. Well guys, let’s not worry about how the ratings do. I mean.. we’ve got 11 more episodes of Chuck, so let’s just enjoy those for what we have. If we get a new season, that’s a huge bonus. If not.. there’s no need in being super upset about it and letting it distract you from how much you’re enjoying Chuck now.

    • True, i think based on the ratings for other 12 episodes NBC would be stupid to not renew Chuck. What gets me a little mad though, is Harry’s Law NBC had a commercial saying, “the most watched show on Monday night” I was like no way CHUCK is! I am a YouTube partner now, so its time to start spreading the word more about my favorite Show!

  15. Everyone I know DVR’d the show so they could watch it a few times. That’s the problem with a show like Chuck; people want to savor it to pick up small nuances in the story and acting. I’ve watched it three times now. Until DVRs, web views, and downloads get valued equivalently, the best shows may always get low ratings.

    • Yeah, I get a lot of views out of it through youtube as well since I don’t actually own a DVR, sadly. :/

  16. First, just saw the finalized ratings. The ratings stay where they are — no adjustments. Too bad for Chuck:

Sorry in advance for this long post.

Sorry, but Harry’s Law, at the moment, is NBC’s best-rated Monday night show both in total viewers and in demo ratings. It drew a 2.0 and 2.1 for the combined hour and its total viewers landed in the 10 – 11 million range. It did well last week, too. Chuck drew about half that in total viewers and, well, you know the demo numbers. In fact, Harry’s Law was beat in total viewers only by a rerun of Two and a Half Men (barely). Several shows beat it in the demos. See link below:

    http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/02/01/tv-ratings-monday-chuck-harrys-law-steady-lie-to-me-finale-down/80897

NBC may be premature in its declaration, but at the moment it is accurate. If Harry’s Law continues to hold those ratings and numbers, they can (and the PR department will) stake that claim. Still, Harry’s Law hasn’t had a night against a new Hawaii 5-0 AND Castle at the same yet so we shall see if it holds up when both shows hit the sweeps next week.

Frankly, I’m more concerned about the fact that a dying show like Human Target (ratings are firmly in cancellation territory) did so well against Chuck. Human Target has been running worse than Chuck in the demos (sub 2.0 territories) and now, on Monday vs. Chuck it pulls 2.0+ and 50% more in the total viewers? NBC won’t ignore that happenstance. They could write it as a one-off fluke, but still… that’s not a confidence-builder.

Finally, I don’t think the weather had that much of an effect unless Nielsen families who watch Chuck were adversely affected by localized power outages (I’ve not heard of any major ones so far, but I could have missed the info on my news skimming) or dashes to the store to stock up on supplies. I’m more inclined to go with the uneven episode qualities causing casual fans to tune out and wait to hear if an episode is great or not before they come back. That’s fine to a point — can always catch it on NBC or Hulu. However, when a Nielsen family goes into that viewing mode, down go the ratings.

Whatever the reason, Chuck’s numbers this time around were dinged and dented. If they stay dinged and dented at this level, it’s going to be a tense time until upfronts in May on the ratings front.

Just follow Akiyama’s advice and enjoy the show, for however long it runs. 🙂

  17. To the viewers that tuned in last week and didn’t tune in this week; Sorry. I am truly sorry.

  18. If every Monday show dropped a lot this week, I have a feeling the winter snowstorm had a lot to do with it. The snowstorm will probably affect the ratings for the Tuesday and Wednesday shows as well. I expect the ratings to be back up around 1.9 or 2.0 after next week’s episode.

  19. I think a big part of this was caused by the snow storms in the eastern areas of the country. I couldn’t participate in the chat last night due to a college class, but I replayed it after my class and a whole bunch of people were having issues with the broadcasting because of the snow. Some people said that NBC had coverage of school closures on at the same time as Chuck. In other words, NBC did a split screen. For some others it was simply blacking out. I also have to agree with the fact that NBC hasn’t been promoting it quite as much for the past few weeks as it was about a month ago. That undoubtably was also part of it.

Since NBC now appears to have a keeper with Harry’s Law, if they were smart they would move Chuck to either 9 or 10pm so it might have a little less competition, but more importantly, put Harry’s Law in Chuck’s spot so it could be a lead in to Chuck. That would boost the ratings.

Now that Comcast has taken over, I’m expecting Chuck to get some more love now. Also, for Mel, I know I’ve asked this question before, but the rating system is such a confusing mess that every time I think I’ve got it, I don’t. So, trying to keep things as simple as possible, I believe this is the situation, even though it doesn’t seem possible: unless you have a Nielsen box, you can’t contribute to the x.y rating or the total viewers. Is that correct? If it is correct, then does watching it without a Nielsen box (or therefore watching it with a regular box, same thing) count for anything at all? Please tell me it does. Thanks.

  20. Trust me, it’s the storm. I live in NJ, and three of my friends who watch chuck lost power and couldn’t watch it (they were dying). I’m sure its the storm 🙂

  21. Definitely one of the best episodes of the series, it’s too bad so many people are missing out. What could possibly be better on TV right now? HIMYM has been on repeats the last couple of weeks, and has been probably the weakest season yet for that show (except for a couple of excellent episodes). The Bachelor? Ugh I think I’m getting nauseous just naming that show. I suppose the only show that can really compete in quality is House, though I haven’t really watched more than a couple episodes of it. But of everything that airs in that timeslot, Chuck is the one I’d prefer to watch live, week after week.

But here’s hoping the storm had a lot to do with it. I’m also hoping that we get at least a good 6-7 total seasons of Chuck before NBC makes its usual poor scheduling/programming decisions. This is my favorite show on television right now, and I would be lost without it.

  22. did any1 notice dat all da best episodes of season 4 (phase 3 and push mix) had the season’s lowest, but was brought up da nxt episode. Mayb bcause the episode b4 was kinda bad, ppl didnt want to watch da nxt one. But then heard about da great episodes and watched it online and watched the nxt weeks episode.

  23. Wow norhwind was to stay positive. I not saying it a sure thing but this was one ep. Chuck always goes down and up. Also is rating are so important then why is chuck still around. Sorry but it has a loyal fanbase. Also i think it about time the chuck fans get together and rally for a fifth season. But if we dont get a fifth season at least we get to see Chuck and Sarah get married. I mean come on it happing at the end of this season
