Ratings: Chuck vs. the Masquerade

The ratings are in for last night’s episode of Chuck, “Chuck vs. the Masquerade”. The numbers remain the same as they have been the last couple of weeks: 1.7 in the adults 18 – 49 demo with 5.5 million viewers. Looks like we’ve hit a new steady.

  1. are canadians included in these ratings?

  2. That’s 4 weeks in a row at 1.7 . The nielsen system won’t change , and I understand why they use it . But having 25,000 tv viewing households in the U.S. out of an estimated 113 MILLION be responsible for the views of the entire country is completely laughable . That’s 0.0002 percent of households determining the ratings .

    * sigh *

    • I couldn’t agree with you more, Fiesty Goat!

Having said that, we all need to just stay calm, and do everything we can to support this show and spread the word!

Long Live Team Bartowski! Long Live Chuck!!! 😀

  3. The problem is that different TV programs draw different demographics. The demographic for Chuck is somewhat more technically knowledgeable than the average, I suspect.

They (we) are not interested in being told how to be counted; in many cases, they can’t be counted. Chuck has huge fan bases in countries that it doesn’t air in, or only airs after long delays. That would fragment and isolate the social communication that occurs, so fans bypass the system.

Take a look at a show like ‘The Late Late Show, with Craig Ferguson”. They (CBS) regularly acknowledge their bootlegging audience (on the show itself), and they use that information to spur sales in countries that are not currently subscribing.

It’s been said many times and many ways; Nielsen is only one measure. Anyone that still uses it exclusively as the measurement of programming viewership is still living in 1995. Efforts to get viewers to conform to the antiquated measurement will fail. You might as well try to convince people to send telegrams instead of emails and tweets. It’s the network that has to change, and it needs to use measurements and distribution technologies that make sense to the global market.

    • As we’ve noted here several times, NBC does NOT solely rely on Nielsen ratings when making programming decisions. They have an internal ratings system that includes broadcast numbers, NBC.com, Hulu, Video on Demand, and DVR numbers to varying degrees (broadcast has the most weight, and I believe it was DVR+7 with the least).

      • They don’t take note of foreign ratings? Ouch.

So while there are tons of us outside of the US clamoring for every new Chuck episode, we aren’t really counted and thus, our voices will not be heard, correct?

        I feel helpless.

      • You can always contribute by helping to spread the word within the U.S. itself! 🙂

      • It’s because NBC only profits from U.S. airings. Warner Bros., the studio that produces Chuck, sells the rights to other networks internationally. Now what international fans CAN do is support the show by purchasing DVDs and watching on theWB.com so that the studio makes more money off the show and can then offer it at a lower price to NBC.

  4. This is starting to get scary….. This may be the last season if nothing gets better. : ( I’m joing tvreward like you suggested, not sure if it will make a difference. I love this show too much not to try though. Come on chucksters, “Unleash the Casey” and sign up.

  5. Nielsen ratings are all hit or miss. If this was 5 or 6 years ago, I’d be bumping the #’s up, because at that time I was a Nielsen household. If I remember right, I counted for 50k people… Not a lot, but at this point every little bit helps.

  6. if it remained steady like this, til the end of the season, would it be reliable at quite alow level like this.i dont really know why its such a big deal that its steady point was 1.9 and it has only gone down .2.i still think thats quite reliable

  7. Reward.tv,com didn’t allow me to finish Chuck’s 21 question survey when I got the first one right, so I hope it still counted the statistics. Bank of Evil next week.

  8. how did the cape do?

  9. Damn it, why am I canadian!

  10. Well I took the quiz at RewardTV but I blew half the questions about the commercials. I was reading the live chat for crying out loud! I hope it still counted.

  11. I’m afraid that “new steady” of 1.7 is not going to be enough to convince the NBC/Comcast executives to renew Chuck for a 5th season. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.

  12. I’m not overly positive about the 1.7, either. And I FEAR it will go even lower when Dancing with the Stars comes back on (it ALWAYS hurts us), and then when Daylight Savings Time hits. Not that it’s much consolation, but NBC had a terrible week overall last week. It will be interesting to see how the rest of this week plays out. Shows that are getting MUCH, MUCH more promotion than CHUCK (which hardly gets any at all) are doing about the same or barely better than CHUCK. Look at the Thursday night Comedy block last week. CHUCK has more viewers than EVERY ONE of those shows except The Office. Parks and Rec. has a higher demo (which is the major rating factor), but CHUCK had more total viewers.

One way in addition to rewardTv is to watch on NBC.COM and HULU, but especially NBC.COM. Let’s just say my computer is a “Chuck-addict.” It watches the most recent episode of CHUCK each week on NBC.COM and HULU.

If it gets down to a “coin toss” closeness between two NBC shows as to which one is canceled and which one is renewed, EVERY LITTLE BIT WILL COUNT.

So DO rewardTV and watch, watch, watch over and over and over again on NBC.COM. And DON’T FORGET SUBWAY EITHER ON MONDAY NIGHTS!!!

  13. I already have told myself this is the last season. Josh and Chris need to wrap it up

  14. Did rewardstv and got all the Chuck questions right but missed a few on the commercials.Forgot I was a member on rewardstv.Hopefully more fans will go there then voted on the shorty awards.

  15. Hey guys.
I´m from Austria but I follow every episode on Chuck. So even if I can do this, what´s up with the americans. If I could I would turn on 1 million TV´s just for better ratings. So let´s go. We need good ratings, because otherwise we won´t see a 5th season.

    best, Stefan

  16. Theres someting seriously wrong if NBC can’t reach the forein chuck community’s I hope they will concider a international chuck hulu-like website that hosts chuck episodes, I think NBC and Warner will be amazed by the amount of viewers they will get by setting up someting like that 🙂 I know I’ll join in !

But by any means I hope chuck gets renewed by at least 1 more season, 5 seems like a fair number to me and I also think there are more story’s that can be told and characters that can be explored. (Sorry for my bad English ;P)

  17. I’m glad there’s finally a way for people without Nielsen boxes to count. NBC hasn’t been helping the show during this spring season. For some reason, they’re not promoting it as much as they were during the fall, and that undoubtably reduced the ratings. The good news is that for the past few weeks, the Cape and Harry’s Law haven’t gotten any better ratings than Chuck. The Cape is the worst of the 3, with 1.2s and 1.3s the last few weeks. Chuck and Harry’s Law have both gotten 1.7s the last few weeks.

I was hoping that the Comcast takeover would help us out because they were using Zach in the Xfinity commercials, but now they’re using Glee.

For Rick Holy, I knew things at NBC were bad, but I had no idea that its comedy block was doing so badly. Wow.

Lastly, for anyone who is fine with the series ending with the Chuck/Sarah wedding, I’m not sure what your thinking. Knowing the kind of people they are and what their backgrounds are it would be very entertaining to watch them start a family and go through the things that Ellie and Awesome are going through right now.
