Nielsen families now have the potential to make an even bigger impact on the ratings: beginning March 28, Nielsen began counting duplicate viewings of shows in Nielsen households. TV By The Numbers breaks it down for us:
beginning with the ratings we saw this morning [March 29] for Monday night, any duplicate viewing of a program on DVR before 3am is included in the Live+SD (live viewing plus same day DVR viewing) ratings.
Could this help Chuck? Maybe. We know of at least one Chuck fan who is a Nielsen viewer, so a repeat viewing on the DVR Monday nights without fast forwarding the commercials could boost ratings, but just like any other viewing on television, this only applies to those chosen few whose viewing habits are counted by Nielsen. By all means, watch the episode again for your own pleasure, but unless you’re a Nielsen family, it won’t be included in the numbers on Tuesday morning. Instead we encourage you to join the We Give A Chuck campaign targeting advertisers as well as logging into RewardTV.com Tuesday mornings to fill out the Chuck survey.
Thanks to everyone who sent this news item in!
I will watch but I don’t think I have that Nielsen. I became a fan in about the maybe second season and seen every episode. So there is nothing that is going to stop me now!! I just wish I could do something bigger though. 🙂
Wouldn’t it skew already highly rated shows higher and then lower rated shows less?
Or am I missing something?
Only if Nielsen viewers rewatch the higher rated shows before 3AM and not the lower rated shows. TVBTN reports that this system has been in place for a few weeks although the numbers haven’t been included until last week. Using those numbers, the Fringe episode that aired March 25 gained .1 demo point, going from 1.3 to 1.4. Fox claimed it in their ratings press release, but so far that’s been the only example of a change in demo numbers. Now that it’s public knowledge, who knows?
That’s super but no Nielsen box at my place. I will however give a Chuck because I want season 5 as much as anyone. 🙂
is it possible to sign up to become a member of the highly exclusive nielson family? cuz ill sign up no problem. pretty much the only show i watch is chuck.
No, sorry, can’t ask to be a Nielsen Family. It’s a “don’t call us, we’ll call you” kind of thing based on random sampling and started with an out-of-the-blue contact asking if you want to be a Nielsen family (followed, if you say yes, by a lot of rules, guidelines, instructions, and other paperwork).
Wonder if regular DVR viewings count the same way…….. maybe? Cause alot of times I let my DVR repeat it while I’m doing other things. Its not a Nielsen Box though, so probably doesn’t matter, but it would be nice if it did.
if i can just say, everywhere i go i find someone who is a Chuck viewer. You’d think no one watches it from the low ratings but a ton people I know have seen it and are a fan.
I think it’s interesting that the views only count if people don’t fast-forward through the commercials on their DVR. I understand that advertisers are important for the show, but the people I know who record a show on DVR are only doing it to get out of watching the commercials in the first place!
In any case, I will be curious to see how this does affect the ratings, if at all….
it does look interesting but I am thinking it might be too little to late for Chuck.
