In a conference call this morning, new NBCU chief Steve Burke revealed that parent company Comcast has committed an additional $200 million to NBC’s 2011-2012 primetime lineup. The rationale? You have to spend money to make money. Per Deadline:
NBCU chief Steve Burke says the company plans to spend $200 million more this year on NBC’s primetime schedule than General Electric did last year when it owned the network. (Burke is looking at 21 pilots, about the same number NBC ordered in 2010.) Comcast considers the turn-around to be a long-term project, but Burke says that simply lifting NBC to 3rd place from 4th would mean “hundreds of millions” in improvement in the company’s cash flow.
As Joe at ChuckThis pointed out, if the number of pilots they’re looking at is about the same, then the additional funding is likely to be in the form of advertising and show budgets. I doubt Chuck would see a larger production budget for its fifth (we hope) season, but it would certainly benefit from a larger promotional budget. Chuck is one of the few shows on NBC’s schedule that responds directly to increased promotion, a fact that fans have pointed out since season 2.
Hopefully they will show some care about our favorite show instead of worrying over crappy pilots that seem to always fail.
I see a somewhat equal amount of promos for just about every NBC show but Chuck. I don’t get why The Event gets so much promotion. Even with it, it does worse than Chuck which has almost none.
Just the fact that Comcast could use the reach of the many other networks that they carry to promote Chuck would be welcome news.
I don’t think that’s good news for chuck… if they are willing to invest so much in the new scheduele that means they are going to make some changes and with chuck ratings it’s unlikely they will keep it.
(But scretly i wish for a miracle so we can get season5,6,7,8,9,10)
I think if they would spend some of that additional monies on producing Chuck we would get a better show. I think they do a great job now but I think they could do an even better job with more money.
it sure would be nice if they promoted it more and had less interruptions in the show schedule. I have noticed as of late we have had lots of cases where the show stops for a week and is then back again in two weeks with new shows. That kills the momentum and I think is the reason why people are watching other shows where that does not happen as much. Its hard to get into when that happens.
$200 Million!!!!! They REALY want people to know that The Voice airs on NBC Tuesdays at 10
Can you imagine how many people would tune into Chuck if it had even 25% of the promos that The Voice does. I saw many promos for that show and Law and Order LA (Monday night show) but none for Chuck….just don’t understand that logic at all.
I know. That’s one area where NBC is so stupid. They have absolutely no clue at all what to promote and especially when to promote shows.
Either NBC is going clean house and get some new pilots, or spend a whole chunk of money on The Voice and it’s promos. Almost everything else goes to the Event. Chuck gets next to nothing, again.
You’re missing the point: NBC has the same number of pilots in development this season that they did last season, so they aren’t likely to spend more on that front but rather beef up production budgets and advertising budgets. As for the Event, don’t hold your breath for season 2.
I also wouldn’t hold my breath for the Voice. It’s so pathetic. I have never seen a new show that looks so much like a carbon copy of AI. It’s ridiculous. The Voice promos actually say “move over AI”. I think AI will say “get out of my way”. This is like the search engine competition between Google and everyone else (ok, maybe excluding Bing): they all try to compete and end up just getting devoured.
If you want quality, you gotta pay for it.
When it comes right down to it, dollars will determine if Chuck gets canceled. If Comcast thinks they can make more money off Chuck than what they can replace it with, Chuck will be renewed. Ratings simply factor into the bottom line.
NBC can’t replace everything, can they? At some point they have to mitigate their risks by sticking with a known commodity. It’s marginal but Chuck is one of just a few shows that fits that category right now.
I’m hopeful for a fifth season but not optimistic. If there is a fifth season, I think it to be the last.
With a greater investment into programming, the new shows should have a better chance at success. Which means, assuming it’s renewed, unless Chuck performs better next season, it becomes the risk as opposed to the other shows.
hoping for season 5……………………………6,7,8,9,10 etc
I think NBC should just renew chucj untill season 10 ….that ways it will stop us all worrying every year and huk gets 10 seasons
Man it’s a shame Comcast couldn’t have come around and bought out the dying dinosaur that has become “The NBC” back during Season 2! If only back then the money was to be had and invested properly in Chuck the legion of Chucksters would be unstoppable and uncountable. Bringing millions of possible fans into the fold was lost on NBC when they decided to keep Chuck “low key”.
Good news for NBC… likely bad news for chuck… hope F&S have pulled out all the stops in the season 4 finale. So far so good this season…
