RATINGS: Chuck Drops Again?!?

Well this is unexpected. After last week’s all-time low ratings opposite the World Series, Chuck dropped again this week to an 0.8 in the 18-49 demo and 3.1 million viewers overall. Now I’m really curious to see the DVR numbers; do people just not know Chuck is on Friday nights?

Taking a look at the other shows airing in that timeslot, Extreme Home Makeover had the most viewers with 4.86 million and Kitchen Nightmares rated highest in the demo with a 1.5. Obviously Friday standards are different than other nights, and it would appear that viewers prefer non-scripted fare.

For those asking about Chuck on Hulu, iTunes, etc., it looks like Warner Bros. is still negotiating deals for streaming the new season. We’ll post as soon as episodes are available on those outlets.

  1. I don’t know if this might be effecting the ratings but i know in my area in wisconsin the premiere didn’t show because of a high school football game being shown instead, and last week we didn’t get the episode at all and it can’t be viewed online. I love chuck and have been fallowing since the beginning but it is breaking my heart to miss it like this.

  2. I don’t know about anyone else, but I always DVR Chuck, and now that it’s on Friday I think those numbers are going to be even more important than ever before. I am discouraged though, because I really want a complete season of Chuck with the back 9 so we end with an even 100 episodes.

  3. I live in Wisconsin and for the past 2 weeks Chuck & Grimm haven’t aired on Friday. Instead we get high school football. NBC airs the new episodes after SNL at 12am. All the advertising for those shows being on Friday night was utterly wasted here in WI, smooth NBC, little wonder The CW is catching up!

  4. Maybe it’s because season 4 was horrible and season 5 seems very tired. Has Chuck jumped the shark?

    • Couldn´t agree with you. On my mind season 4 is the best season so far. Although every season is great 🙂

  5. In Australia we haven’t got season 5 yet 🙁 i wish ratings counted for all over the world and not just USA

  6. Learning from last season I have tried to remain patient to see where this arc will lead. I have to admit that I haven’t been too thrilled with the current storyline until this last episode. That put everything that has happened so far into perspective. Now I can’t wait to see where this story will lead us. I don’t know why NBC & WB is canceling this show or why they won’t give us a back 9. I still have faith in Chuck and it’s writers.

  7. Fargo ND preempted Chuck for HS football too. I’m from Denver and stuck here for the next SIX WEEKS. Arrrrrgh.

  8. I’m waiting for it to be available online. I’m not surprised that ratings are low. No one knows it’s on Fridays and from first glance at hulu it doesn’t look like there’s new episodes! I just realized that it has been aired for the last two weeks but isn’t available on hulu:(

  9. I had NO IDEA Chuck switched to Fridays till the 3rd Episode. Can’t find the 2nd ANYWHERE. DVRing the rest of the season. Really upset that there was no advertising for this (at least that I saw).

  10. Chuck actually got more promotional support prior to the season premiere this year than last year. I’m sure there are people who still didn’t see the promos, but that’s why Chuck fans have to spread the word.

I’m afraid that too many Chuck fans took the attitude that “ratings don’t matter any more” and word-of-mouth and buzz by Chuck fans spreading the word was much lower this season than I’ve ever seen it before.

Unfortunately, even for a show in its final season, ratings do still matter to how available the show will be. We’re starting to see stations preempt it to put their own programming on because that programming either gets higher ratings than Chuck or they can make more money off their own shows. Detroit is preempting this coming Friday and putting the show on at 1:35 AM.

I’m sure the Hulu/NBC.com black-out is driven by low ratings also as NBC tries to get more people to watch on NBC’s traditional channel.

    • Diane, it’s more the Friday night timeslot causing the pre-emptions than the show. Most of what we’re hearing is that local affiliates are pre-empting for high school football; doesn’t matter what was on the air, they’d pull it in favor of their games.

The online streaming issue is complicated and we’ve had to endure it before until WB and NBC reached an agreement. I don’t think that’s going to happen this season, though. 🙁

  11. can’t believe these execs don’t have bigger brains. They have shows like “The Sing Off” that are less than mediocre at best, yet a show like CHUCK with faithful followers, and family viewing gets cancelled while fans tweet and facebook, and use social media to constantly talk about the cast, the episodes, etc. No wonder NBC is loosing ground, they have lame executives making poor decisions!
We love ’em all, from Britains best grenade bazooka grandma to tatooed oriental heiresses, a multipersonalitied bondsman, and the main cast- from our Buy More crew (all of em) and great leads in Chuck, Sara, Morgan, the General, Casey and more. Oh and we love that spy that saved me!
