We’ve been wondering what Zachary Levi was going to do next, and the news was worth the wait: Deadline reports that Zac is attached to executive produce and possibly star in a half-hour musical comedy, co-produced by Eva Longoria, called Tuned.
Just so you know going in, there are a lot of qualifiers attached to this report, presumably because the papers haven’t been signed, but if Deadline is posting about it, then an official announcement is imminent. Here’s a description of the show:
Written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Made Of Honor), Tuned is described as a musical half-hour about an ambitious New Yorker — a role intended for Levi — whose life is upended by sudden musical hallucinations. While these vivid hallucinations threaten to completely derail his enviable life, he’ll eventually realize that they might lead him on a more fulfilling journey.
Sounds a bit like Eli Stone, doesn’t it? Presumably there are plenty of differences to set it apart, including Zac himself singing. This series comes along as musicals on TV are having a resurgence, both due to and in spite of what Glee has done for the genre. NBC had a hit with its live broadcast of the musical play The Sound of Music last year, and both NBC and FOX will present live broadcasts of musicals this year (Peter Pan and Grease, respectively). Meanwhile, ABC has musical comedy Galavant poised for mid-season, which I’ve seen and loved. Tuned could be part of a new era of musical TV.
Tuned is in development at NBC currently; we’ll update when more information is announced.
