Friday Five: Best Firefly References

One of the reasons Liz and I were so excited about Chuck way back before the pilot was even filmed was the casting of Adam Baldwin as John Casey. We were both fans of his before, especially from his role as Jayne Cobb in Joss Whedon’s (sadly) short-lived series, Firefly. Apparently the Chuck writers were also fans of Firefly, because it wasn’t long before references to Jayne and the crew of the Serenity began popping up on the show.

Herewith, five of our favorite Firefly references on Chuck.

  1. Chuck vs. the Sandworm (episode 1.06): Casey sarcastically remarks, “What, he’s gonna kill me with his mind?” This is a reference to Summer Glau’s Firefly character, River.
  2. Chuck vs. the Crown Vic (episode 1.11): Casey’s car is referred to as “shiny,” a favorite, and iconic, exclamation from Jewel Staite’s Firefly character, Kaylee.
  3. Chuck vs. the Sensei (episode 2.09): While fighting his sensei, Casey tells Chuck, “You are damaging my calm!” Adam says the same thing in the movie Serenity right before (spoiler alert!) the crew discovers bodies on another ship.
  4. Chuck vs. the Fear of Death (episode 4.08): Summer Glau guest stars as one of the Gretas, giving is a mini-Firefly reunion. At one point Casey says to her, “I don’t know who you’ve worked with before, or what crew you were on…”, a nod to the fact that they were both part of the Serenity crew.
  5. Chuck vs. the Goodbye (episode 5.13): In the final episode of the series, Casey tells General Beckman, “We’re just happy to be doing good works, ma’am.” Jayne says the same thing in the Firefly episode, “Serenity”.

There are a couple more references throughout the series; what are your favorites? Also, if you haven’t seen Firefly for some reason, get thee to Netflix tout suite!
