Variety announced yesterday that Zachary Levi is heading back to Broadway in the spring, headlining a revival of the 1963 musical comedy “She Loves Me“.
Zac is taking over the role from Josh Radnor (of How I Met Your Mother fame) after scheduling issues forced the latter to bow out. The cast also includes Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, Rene Auberjonois and Gaving Creel.
Zac will play Georg, a perfume shop employee who doesn’t know the anonymous pen pal he’s falling in love with is the co-worker, Amalia (Benanti), who he bickers with on a daily basis. Sound familiar? The premise is also the basis for the classic films The Shop Around the Corner, which in turn inspired the Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks rom-com You’ve Got Mail (but with less singing).
“She Loves Me” is part of a high-profile 50th anniversary season at Roundabout Theatre Company, which is also producing “Therese Raquin” with Keira Knightley, “Old Times” with Clive Owen and “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” with Jessica Lange and Michael Shannon.
Zac previously started in the musical comedy “First Date“, which our own Cay attended and reviewed for us back in January 2014.
“She Loves Me” begins previews February 5 ahead of a March 3 opening at Studio 54.
