Fast Ratings Drop a Bit for Chuck

The fast overnight ratings for Chuck dropped to 6.47 million viewers, but as those in the ChuckTV.net forum have pointed out, final numbers often see a bump in total viewers. Oh Nielsen, you are so tricksy.

  1. At 51, I’m slightly over the demo the networks are so desperate to attract but I still like to spend money on products advertised. As an admitted “Chuck” addict, I’ve managed to get my 24 year old daughter, 21 year old son and 21 year old nephew addicted to this show. They in turn have managed to turn several of their friends into huge “Chuck” fans. How Nielsen can come up with the viewer and demo numbers they post each week based on the 16000 viewers they use for polls each week baffles me. This is an antiquated and totally out of touch ratings system that Nielsen continues to force down our throats to remain relevant in today’s world of cable with 100s of channels. I truly believe that the audience for “Chuck” is far larger than they think it is. I do admit to being a fan of the CBS shows too which I tape each week to watch later but I have to believe that ABC has paid off most of the Nielsen pollsters to boost up the tired, cheap reality crap that they are putting on each week. Honestly you have to ask; who are these millions of saps that they insist are watching The Bachelor and DWTS each week. I’m considered old and I can’t stand to watch this drivel. Who are these people?
    Chuck makes me laugh and is the only show that I can honestly say I look forward to each week. I hated Mondays all of my working life but I can’t wait it to get here now.

  2. Yes John! My sentiments exactly! You’ve said everything that I was thinking and you actually phrased it better as well. I don’t understand Nielsen ratings at all. I do not watch the reality crap that is on ABC. I actually don’t know many people that do.

    I agree with you, there are more Chuck fans than what the Nielsen rating states. Just look at the NBC message boards. I mean let’s face it, if they take Chuck off the network, what are they gonna replace it with? A reality show?! Really?! NBC, do you honestly think you can get another show to do as well or better than Chuck? I honestly don’t think so. With that being said….

    GIVE MY SHOW ITS DUE THIRD SEASON!

  3. I believe the day of true account ratings is not too far in the future. The all digital broadcast is coming in June and a large percentage of the population will have interactive digital converters or satelite receivers in their homes. If people can get past the “Big Brother” phobia and allow the technology to evolve, I believe their is a far more accurate measure ahead. I believe that programmers can develop a program which will allow these converters and receivers to send anonymous pings to computers which accurately show what’s being watched. This can be fine tuned to show only the major networks (broadcast and cable) so that people don’t think that their privacy is being invaded. It’s a far more accurate and realistic way to provide advertiser’s the numbers they need and would represent a program’s true numbers. As far as the demo numbers, that’s all a load of hogwash. While 18-49 is the number they are desperate to pull in, tell me how many 18-21 year olds actually have the money to buy without help from parents. I think the true spending power that they should appeal to should be the 25-55 range. I guess we should all just wait and see what the future holds. Nielsen will still make money from political polls which no computer program can ever help with.

  4. I am wondering if iTunes purchases count. My husband and I discovered Chuck via iTunes after Middleman was canceled and have been trying to catch up to the current episode by watching an episode almost every night. I sure hope the show hasn’t been canceled by the time we catch up, it is just fantastic. Usually though its these really good shows that don’t last. The networks are too quick to yank something, especially given the writers’ strike. Shows need time to get noticed and build a fan base. This process, I feel, takes longer now because there are so many options out there and not enough marketing to go around for the really great shows. It also seems that networks aren’t aiming to make long term successful shows, they are happier with a “broadcast and burn” strategy. Is it nepotism that drives the short term goals of network execs? Something else? I can’t imagine.
