With a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach I watched the fourth season of Chuck start out with a lie by omission aka a secret. Coupled with an inexplicable rationalization by Chuck – as proved wrong by Casey and Sarah’s willingness to not only help Chuck at the end of the episode but also to keep it a secret from General Beckman – that Sarah and Casey would block his mission to search for MamaB.
A wobbly start.
From that tenuous opening it took about half the episode for solid footing to return and allow the story momentum to hit its stride. By the time Sarah tried ‘sexting’ while enroute to Russia the show finally gained full traction and finished in rousing style. Given how loose the episode played with time, Chuck and Morgan could have just as easily gone off on the Indiana Jones style montage searching for MamaB without the need to have kept it a secret.
With the benefit of the additional six episodes last season all the threads from the original thirteen episode arc had been closed off. That allowed this episode to fully establish and position the rest of Season Four to commence starting with the very next episode. Something that did not happen until the fourth episode of Season Three.
The new BuyMore is indeed shiny and having General Beckman on site is a definite bonus. I am still of the mind that with the Gretas and with the impending return of the Big Mike, Jeff and Lester that a time crunch is unavoidable. Add in Alex to the mix and the pressure for precious screen time becomes greater in a show with an already large cast. The reluctance to lose the BuyMore is understandable since it is such a signature part of the show but Chuck the character and the series have moved past it. It is akin to having Captain Kirk warp back to StarFleet Academy after every mission. That being said the show gets full marks for bring the BuyMore back in a streamlined and as relevant manner as possible. Anyone want to take bets that the DefCon 1 Button is part of the next Pineapple scenario?
In a show that aims so broadly there are bits that will appeal to different sections of the audience. I enjoyed the Stanton RepoMan scenes but found the interview segments being sabotaged by Beckman a clunky way of bringing Chuck back to the BuyMore. A more focused aim with the humor culled from a tighter storyline would be my preference. The standout sequence from the first half was the HongKong roof jump by Casey and Sarah. Markus setting off the EMP and blacking out the surrounding city scape was very cool.
Episode Flashes:
- Linda Hamilton is MamaB!
- Chuck and Sarah spy version of spouse leaving for business trip
- Morgan/Chuck Rogue Team
- Morgan flexing
- Nerd Herd icon Lost Arking their progress on world map – little miffed about Canada being excluded – overlayed with Morgan and Chuck silhouettes I Spying and Avengering across the screen
- Repo – ‘Harry Dean Stanton’ – showing up to reposses a $900 AMC Pacer and yellow at that
- Markus using the portable EMP and blacking out surrounding Hong Kong skyline
- Sarah openly and Casey grudgingly missing Chuck on the mission
- Casey/Sarah roofjump from HongKong skyscraper – ode to The Dark Knight
- Casey getting a Season 3 Callback to Sarah’s, ‘Thank You.’
- Morgan sexting Chuck to Sarah
- Sade, ‘Smooth Operator,’ reference by Chuck during the interview sequence
- New and improved CIA/NSA owned and operated BuyMore/Castle – shiny! And it has slides!!!!
- Beckman is in da house! Great idea to have Bonita Friedericy onsite and from behind the desk.
- Olivia Munn as Greta – very pretty but not very relevant to story
- Sarah finds ‘sexting’ cute
- We’ll always have Tangiers. Ie RUN!!!!!!!!
- Weapon Orders via a Chinese Dumpling Take-Out Menu – brilliant!
- Morgan covers the trip to Volkoff Industries by selling his prized Millenium Falcon replica
- Sarah posing awkwardly for ‘sexting’
- Nerd icon and Casey/Sarah LearJet icons intersecting in Russia
- Lundgren says it! ‘I must break you.’ And does kickass job as a guest star.
- The new spy nom de plume, ‘The name is Carmichael. Michael Carmichael.’ Move over Bond!
- MORGAN! – ‘Respect the beard.’
- Sarah toe sexting!
- Morgan learns from Season 3 bomb detonator finale and stays away from handling portable EMP.
- Chuck and Morgan developing world class rep because they use public transportation
off stage Chuck Intersect fight with 10 baddies and fire fight in dark cool ways around budget limitations - Casey and Sarah’s reactions when they believe Chuck has been killed
- Chuck and Morgan hiding under table in the dark
- Casey and Sarah agreeing to help Chuck find MamaB and keep it from Beckman
- Did I mention Linda Hamilton is MamaB and a kickass one at that!! Woah! Great closing scene and her character and codename – Frost – leaves us with mixed signals.

The episode really hits its stride in the second half of the episode when Team Barktowski all converge in Russia. From Morgan’s, ‘Respect the beard,’ and ‘Michael CarMichael,’ to Markus’s belief that Chuck and Morgan are master spies – hilarious and delivered with perfection by Dolph Lundgren – to Casey and Sarah’s reactions of grief and relief over Chuck to the off screen ChuckFu and fire fight to using a bus as a getaway vehicle; it is Chuck at its best.
To cap it off Chuck and Sarah reach a new agreement. No lies. No secrets. Chuck honors the agreement and brings Casey and Sarah fully in the fold. The show ends with Team Bartowski in synch, working as an unit, covering each other’s back, and ready to take on the man – er General Beckman in this case – and the world. Made even more so joyous because the team members are all in a good place.
To end on such a high is most welcome. Too bad it is marred slightly by the Chuck and Ellie scene where Chuck feels compelled to keep the secret from Ellie. The delay is somewhat bearable because of Ellie’s announcement of impending motherhood. This episode made vast gains in having the pretenses within the Bartowski clan dropped. Let us hope for some form of swift resolution between Chuck and Ellie too.
Linda Hamilton’s appearance as MamaB in the closing scene really left the episode on a high. Linda still cuts a very menacing Sarah Connor type persona and her ruthless take down not only impressed but added a layer of mixed comprehension for the audience. Who exactly is this Frost person? Cannot wait to find out and cannot wait to see MamaB’s return and eventual meeting with Sarah.
No doubt about it. Linda Hamilton IS MamaB! And she’ll be back.
Season 4 is off to a very solid start.

Everyone wish Josie Kafka from the Billiedoux website a warm welcome as she climbs aboard ChuckTV to add her Chuck episode reviews to the site! Her first review can be found here.
Also, in case you missed, the first CNN Audio Review went live and can be found on ChuckTV here.
Lots of Chuck episode review coverage. The more the merrier! Enjoy.
While I admit that the premiere had it’s marred moments( Chuck telling lies again, Morgan sexting Sarah, Ellie being kept in the dark) I thought it was a solid opening to what maybe our last season of Chuck and the gang.
I wonder what sort of agenda MEB has, and if she’ll be on Team B’s side in this adventure? That being said, Mama B is so badass she makes Sarah seem like a kitten in comparison. It’s kind of scary how dangerous she is, after all she is John Conner’s mother. Wow that was one ruthless take down.
Sort of wish the Buy More had remained gone, it was funny in the beginning now it’s just…there. And I wish that the Team had remained fugitives for a couple of episodes as a rogue band of spies, which now they are.
Any spoilers coming up yet for new episodes soon? I’m beginning to be in withdrawals again. : /
I agree with you about starting with Chuck not trusting Sarah or Casey for that matter and keeping it secret from them. Also agree with you about Morgan pretending to be Chuck and trying to get Sarah to sext him. That is something creepy that Lester would do but not a loyal best friend like Morgan.I guess with the absence of Jeff and Lester they put Morgan in the spot to do the creepy humour.Other then those two problems I enjoyed it though.
Thanks for the great review.
I also thought they “forced” it a bit by making Chuck believe Sarah and Casey wouldn’t help him, but as long as team B is together again, I am happy. I also fear a bit that the new Buy More and Alex and a Baby Awesome may complicate the pace and editing of the show, but I trust the writers.
And the Dark Knight style roof dive was just too great!
Dolph Lundgren was indeed great, but Olivia Munn was too robotic (I know Gretas are supposed to be this cold-mean-spying-machines, but she wasn’t convincing). Stanton was great with his greasy hair and sad “I love dumplings” face.
I just thought they pushed the envelope with the “If you die, you die”… it sounded too fake and misplaced. The “I must break you” reference, on the other hand, was priceless.
The Ellie scene was also a bit off. If she was so happy, why did she sound so apprehensive? I know one can cry because of joy, buy she didn’t seem happy.
I also liked the codename “Frost”. So 80’s like (now they have fake names, not just codenames like Orion, Perseus, etc). I also found it interesting that half of the episode took place in a freezing location, with lots of snow. (That is a weird thing, since it does NOT snow in september in Moscow).
Just a question, what do you mean by “Casey getting a Season 3 Callback to Sarah’s, ‘Thank You.”? Really didn’t get that one.
Aww, ” I love dumplings” was so cute, sad and funny at the same time. 🙂
and the ‘thank you’ call back in season 3? When was that? Something may have been amiss … Interesting. Can’t wait for next week.
Chuck Vs The Nacho Sampler – Sarah says Thank You in the same tone to Casey when he admitted she was right about Chuck not being ready to control a mark.
Thanks, OldDarth!
I really liked your review! I agree with the wobbly start. I am disappointed that Chuck is lying to Ellie still but I am grateful that Team Bartowski is back together. I also agree it ended strongly and I can’t wait for them to dive into what Mama B. is all about. Again, great review 🙂
Is it Monday yet?
I loved the episode!
Well, i didnt like seeing chuck lie to ellie, too
but we saw on the episode 2 till 6 promo, that he tells ellie about his search for mom
so he wont be lying to ellie much longer…
Yeah that’s true. I just hope it’s in one of the closer episodes like episode 2-4 just so we see how she takes it.
Thanks to NBC and HULU I’ve watched the episode once a day since Monday. And know what? I want to see it again!!! I’m still grinning.
Besides all the great stuff you pointed out Lou, here’s a tiny tid-bit I think everyone missed, including me the first 3 times I watched. We all saw Mama B say “Oh, Chuck” when she saw him in the safe-house. But I missed that when Marko showed Sarah the photos of the “Master Spies” who had gotten closer to Volkoff Ind. than anyone before them, she too whispers “Oh, Chuck” in the same way. Awwww!
That’s the kind of gem that makes me wanna watch the episode again tomorrow!
Hi, Joe, I just watched the episode again, and Sarah says “Oh, Chuck” when she sees (on the computer screen) that Beckman is talking to him at the Buy More, and not when she sees the Master Spies pictures.
When she sees the pictures she says nothing, Sarah and Casey only deny knowing him.
But you are right, it was a nice parallel I believe many people hadn’t noticed until you pointed it out. And it is also weird that both of them say that while seeing Chuck on a computer screen. Is that some kind of a hint regarding Sarah’s and Mama B’s future mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship?
I really think that the best thing TPTB is to make mama b a divisive figure because then she can cause tension between chuck and Sarah and the rest of team b. Because mama b has her own agenda and she is not a typical bartowski I mean look how she killed marco and his men, she may make chuck do things Sarah does not like her chuck doing. Even casey we saw in final exam did not want chuck to execute someone and we saw how much he cares for chuck in the last episode so I am really looking forward to see how this pans out.
“sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach I watched the fourth season of Chuck start out with a lie” …. Nice Call on that-
My guess is that all these lies have been for some particular plot purpose…
It’ll be interesting to see what TPTB do with this –
now that they’ve spent so much time developing Chuck’s lying – as a character flaw…
How long can he keep going further down that path – before it turns on him?
I felt relieved that Chuck seems to be back on track! I enjoyed 4.01 which is more than I can say for most of the season 3 episodes!
I wonder if the show will ever recover the damage to the brand done by season 3?
I know several people who stopped watching because it wasn’t funny or sweet and wasn’t entertaining.
I stopped watching live because I wanted to fast forward through the parts I didn’t like. I started watching each episode but didn’t finish several of them because they weren’t funny and Superman irritated me.
With 4.01, the humor is back. Mama Bartowski is great! Chuck is still a fish out of water. I enjoyed the “master spies taking public transit! I just hope Chuck can recover from the disaster that was Season 3 and survive
Season 3 was my fav so, along with S1 & 2, this episode built up deftly from the history of all those seasons.
I do not like any of the lies, but at the same time it was a logical position for Chuck to take at the time–he did not want to take away from Ellie’s happy moment. He does need to eventually tell her and probably include the fact Sarah, Casey and Morgan will help in the search for their mom. I enjoyed mother B’s blowing away of the bad guys–nice introductory episode–really anxious to see the scene where Sarah and Mama B confront each other–Looking forward to the intial comment from both of them that breaks the stand off.
You know lou you said that you do not buy that ellie would be happy that chuck is at the buy more. I think at a certain point ellie must realise that she has made chuck give up a presitgeous career (although it is dangerous) and also he does not get to spend time with the love of his life all because ellie said you cant be a spy so I think she had to give him some leeway, she cannot have it all. To be honest I looked at these past 3 seasons and wondered where ellie gets her personality from where chuck and papa b are quiet and very accomodating people Ellie is so like her mom, very demanding and very much their own agenda so I actually hope that chuck takes caseys advice and just ignore Ellie, she is too annoying.
Ellie is his sister not his wife or girlfriend. He owes the truth to Sarah who will understand and support him. Ellie cannot make him sleep on the couch. 😉
My problem with Ellie is that she made Chuck quit the spy life. It was his dream and he worked so hard at it but she makes him quit anyways. Kind of selfish of her. It is Ellie’s fault that Chuck is keeping this secret from her. The minute Chuck tells Ellie he is a spy she will probably tell him to quit. If Ellie can handle the truth without being pushy or judgemental than I say Chuck should tell his sister.
That is what I love about Chuck and Sarah they both support each other. Sarah is on board a 100%. If Ellie can let Chuck be an adult and hand the protective rains over to Sarah then I say tell her but if she is still going to be a nag and worry wart then Ellie must be kept in the dark for now.
After consulting with some folks on twitter it has been established that Chuck needs to grow a pair as well. So they are both at fault for Chuck not telling Ellie.
I guess being abondoned at an early age give you trust issues.
You Know I totally agree, Ellie is very selfish. I mean at the end Chuck said he needed to talk to her and tell her something but she totally just ignored what he had to sasy and was more interested in her news, the fact that she does not realise the damage she caused chuck really makes me think that Ellie only cares about herself. I mean all through the series Ellie has wanted chuck to get a good job and a steady nice girlfriend, he had both and she still made him give up on that, nothing pleases this person! Also chuck is just not an average spy he is one of the best, so good that president sits up and takes notice, I feel sorry for chuck, always having to be the friend that morgan needs him to be, the man and boyfriend that sarah loves, the spy casey knows he can be and the brother that always tries to placate his sister, It is too much for him. I know he is supposed to be a superhero but give the guy a break! The only silver lining is that by keeping the tension up between his sister and mom, they will leave alone any major tension between chuck and sarah and chuck and team b.
I thought the episode was great from beginning to end. However, while I enjoyed the repo man and the Greta scenes, they didn’t really add a whole lot to the overall story for me.
My thought on Greta is if this is how they intend to use the weekly Greta, I’m not sure why they are bothering.
Again, I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy those bits, but they almost seemed like time wasters to me. Time they could have spent say with more Beckman, or Ellie.
The only problem I found was no Captain Awesome, this ep was great otherwise!
