Friday Five: I Got Nuthin’

Guess what? It’s 11AM in New York City, where Liz and I are attending NY Comic Con, and I spaced on creating this week’s Friday Five before we left. Now? I got nuthin’. So guess what – you get to make up your own list of five things somehow related to Chuck. Have fun!

  1. Speaking of… I had my own little “Thursday Four” (Friday Five minus one, of course) last night by re-watching episodes 1-4 of Season 3. Episode 3.4, of course, features Spoon’s “Got Nuffin” (which makes up for the fact that it also features the return of Daniel Shaw *cringe*) 🙂 Great episodes… great song! Happy Friday 🙂

  2. Five Reasons I’m Still a Giddy Fan of Chuck

Usually after a couple of seasons of a favorite show the blush is off the rose and I’m looking around for something new to watch. But it’s different with Chuck. Even re-watching episodes from the first three seasons on DVD is fun and a new season 4 episode on a Monday night? Well, let’s just say the thrill is still there. Why, you ask? You didn’t ask? Tough. Here’s why anyway.

    1. Adam Baldwin as Casey. You knew that would be numero uno, right? He puts so much into sometimes so little in terms of character reaction or a line, and Casey wearing improbable hair pieces and disguises just never gets old. And don’t get me started on the grunting.

    2. Cultural references. My geeky heart soars when I catch these. I know the references are 80s-heavy, so it’s especially fun when the writers go back a bit farther and mine earlier decades as well. I particularly like the very subtle references in costume and tributes that are thrown in all over the place. And they’re always done in a way that respects the reference, showing that “the show” is just as geeky as we are.

    3. Action sequences. The action is good, not too over-the-top, and usually not so rapidly cut that you can’t see what’s going on. And this means that the choreography isn’t being “fixed” in the editing room. So many kudos to the cast and stunt doubles for making the action look so good.

    4. Guest casting. I now fully expect every actor I have ever enjoyed in a fanboy favorite film or TV show to appear at some point on my TV screen. This is not my fault. The show started it. I will be sending my list in soon. Make it so. (Ooh! Patrick Stewart!)

    5. The mix. Comedy, spy action, drama, angst, absurdity, and the seamless transition among them. It’s a roller coaster that I love to ride every week and one that I hope will be around for some time to come. Thanks, Chuck people.

    • I totally agree with all of these! And also that watching old episodes is always a great time. I don’t think there’s ever been another show that I’ve been able to watch and watch and watch and love it just the same (if not more) every single time.

    • vekisto great list and can’t argue any of those points but her is my top 5 reasons for watching Chuck:

      1. Chemistry between all the regular cast members. They all work so well together with each one complementing each other’s roles. Not just Chuck and Sarah, but Chuck and Ellie, Chuck and Casey, Sarah and Morgan (in the few scenes we’ve seen), Sarah and Ellie, Awesome and Ellie, Morgan and Beckman – just any combination of the characters you can name and they will make it awesome.

      2. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously. I mean the sparkle on the tooth of Old Spice guy/Greta when he delivered the stay in school line was priceless, or when Chuck says to Morgan “this isn’t the opening of a TV show, this is real life”.

      3. Yvonne Strahovski and Sarah Lancasterare are not only extremely talented actresses, but also gorgeous (hey I’m a guy), and from what I gather from the female fans they feel the same way about Zac and Awesome.

      4. John Casey. Adam Baldwin was born to play that role, or I guess maybe it was TPTB created the perfect role for him. Most of the best comedic lines have come from Casey in my opinion with my favourite being from Beefcake (sorry shippers) “probably not the best idea to give the “its not you its me speech” to a trained assassin wielding a knife”.

      5. The character growth and development. Characters on most shows stay the same in Season 5 as they were in Season 1, but with Chuck we have had the pleasure to watch characters grow, and mature like most of us do in real life. I find with most shows I lose interest after a few seasons because of this, but I’m still watching and loving Chuck.

    • Well said, vekisto.

    • Well said you pretty much covered it all especially Casey at point number 1. 😉 I love you for putting my favorite character first. Love him.

  3. OK I’ll give this a go. My thought is “Five Chuck episodes we’ll never see”

    1) Chuck vs. the Challenger
Exactly how did Chuck & Sarah ditch the Porsche and wind up with that Challenger after they went on the run on their way to the secret Fulcrum base under the Drive-in movie theater in Barstow?

    2) Chuck vs. The Septic Tank
I remember a throw-away bit of Chuck, Sarah and Casey returning from some mission all filthy after posing as plumbers. Chuck said something to the effect of “…next time let’s hope we don’t have to actually plumb anything.” Details of that mission would be comedy gold.

    3) Chuck vs. The Rehearsal Dinner
Even if nothing funny happened at Awesome & Ellie’s rehearsal dinner, an hour of Sarah in that blue dress would be fine by me.

    4) Chuck vs. the Castle
How about seeing what Chuck got into the first time he was left alone in Castle? A computer geek with unlimited access to D.O.D. level surveillance and databases would be bound to get into some trouble. Maybe look up Irene Demova…

    5) Chuck vs. Polynesia
Maybe Chuck secretly went out to Hawaii to see how Morgan the knife-spinning chef was doing. Lots of Morgan/Anna potential there.

  4. Five words I want to hear:
    sarah, will you marry me?

  5. MY FIVE FAVOURITE SONGS USED IN “CHUCK”
    1. Band of Horses “The General Specific” (“vs. the Tango”)
    2. Bon Iver “Blood Bank” (“vs. the Broken Heart”)
    3. Teddybears “Cobrastyle” (“Pilot”)
    4. Imogen Heap “Wait it Out” (“vs. the Pink Slip”)
    5. Jets “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” (“Pilot”)

  6. 5 Favorite Guest Stars on Chuck:

    Brandon Routh
    Scott Bakula
    John Larroquette
    Jordana Brewster
    Matt Bomer

  7. 5 actors I want to see guest star in the future:
    Harrison Ford
Anthony Hopkins (would be a great bad guy)
    Patrick Stewart
    Nathan Fillion (firefly reunion)
    Sean Connery

    And one actress:
    Natalie Portman

    • Totally agree with some of those actors especially;
      Patrick Stewart….G.R.E.T.A. Make it so
Nathan Fillion…..that would be the most awesome…he could play John Casey’s younger brother
Harrison Ford…..a good friend and confidant of Steven Bartowski’s that comes into town to check on Chuck and Ellie, now that their dad is gone.
Carrie Fisher…..Princess Leia, need I say more.
Tom Hanks….because any role he plays would be EXCELLENT

  8. Well I wanted to do top 5 Casey moments and top 5 Morgan moments, but it would require a lot more research-so I’ll leave that to someone else. Off the top of my head, here are just a few of my favorite Chuck/Sarah moments:
    1. S1-Pilot. last scene together on the beach after Chuck sat up all night pondering his new “life.” Probably the first “real” moment between them.
    2. S1-Hard Salami. the fightin’ words and then Sarah kissing Chuck when they think the “bomb” is about to blow. Lot’s of passion.
    3. S-2,-Seduction. The fake/very real kiss. Wow!
    4. S-2, Colonel. Black Rock, morning make-out at the motel. Darn that Morgan!
    5. S-3, Honeymooners. Pretty much the entire episode, especially the scene in the cafe when they kick butts hand-cuffed together, great teamwork!

  9. 5 Reasons Chuck Should Be On Thursday at 10pm
    1. Can you say 3 hours of comedy, NBC? There is no reason for the Apprentice to be paired with all of those comedy shows. It would be a real nice flow.
    2. Way less competition. Private Practice is no match for the power of Chuck. And their demographics are so different as well.
    3. Strong lead ins (except for Outsourced, ouch) will bring more people in. This also goes back to #1. People are more likely to want to watch more comedy. Like Grey’s Anatomy leads in Private Practice really well.
    4. The first season finale was in fact shown on Thursday at 8 and 10pm ushering in a great second season and made it something people were excited for.
    5. The most important: I can watch it on Thursday at 10pm because I don’t work on Thursdays!

    Do you agree?

  10. Okay so these are five songs that i think should be in a chuck episode or just lyrically make me think of the show’s themes.

    1. Walk Through Hell by Say Anything- a great song about sacrificing for love although the singer feels sort of unworthy of his significant other. “Now I’ve walked through hell for you, what’s an adventurer to do but rest his feet at home with you?”

    2. Murder in the City by The Avett Brothers- This song would go AMAZING with the themes this season. This is a song about intense family bond; I love the last line of the song, “There is nothing worth sharing, like the love that let us share our name.”

    3. Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes- I hear this song and I just see the most amazing fight scene ever. The bass line starts and you are just like heck yeah then the first line of the song is “I’m gonna fight em off, a seven nation army couldn’t hold me back.”

    4. Misguided Ghosts by Paramore- This song probably would be better last season, but this song is so relaxing. It is about making mistakes and trying to find who you are. Like say, is it worth losing yourself to be a spy…

    5. Take It or Leave It by The Strokes- This is just a really cool song. It would be awesome to kind of start an episode with.

So that is my two…or dare I say five cents worth. Let me know what you think!

  11. 5 Reasons why I still love chuck

John Casey: John Casey is one of my favourite characters on the show behind his grunts and sarcastic comments there is a spy who will do anything to help his friends without or with the help of the government.

    The new improved buy more
Who would have thought that the new buy more would actually be a CIA headquarters

    Jeffster
This is one band that is so bad there actually good and would love to see what jeff and lester do in the future

    Chuck Fu and other Flashes
I love to see chuck do the kung fu when he flashes or the other skills but still do not believe the full potential for the intersect has been shown.

Sarah Walker. Yvonne Strahovski need I say more 😉

    • I agree on point 1,4, and 5. Did I mention I agree with point 1? Lol Casey’s my fav too even more then Chuck himself.

The Buy More and Jeffster I can live without though. 🙂

      • Ditto on that, Hope, although I do like Big Mike. Maybe he could be around for guest appearances after he marries Bolognia and there could be some funny stuff with him and Morgan. Jeffster is over for me.

      • they are immature and the rest of the characters no longer are and so jefftser could leave

      • They certainly added a lot the first two seasons. But as the show evolved and some of the other characters, it seems awkward to have them around now. With such a large cast to service, I’d rather see more time devoted (after C/S of course) to Casey, Morgan, Ellie and Awesome. Now we’ve added Alex and Mama B too…it’s only a 42 minute show, so something’s gotta give or you get a choppy Ep. like 4.3 which tries to squeeze to many characters in at once.

      • in a way that doesnt do them justice

  12. FIVE FAVOURITE SARAH OUTFITS, NOT COUNTING THE LINGEREE SCENES:

    • 1. Red outfit: Tango
      2. Blue Dress for rehearsal dinner: Colonel
      3. Scarf at fountain scene: Break-Up
      4. Cookout dress: Suburbs
      5. Dressed down, searching through bomb wreckage: Helicopter
