Stepping in for Liz this week! The fast overnight ratings are in and Chuck holds steady for another week with a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo and approximately 5.3 million viewers. Elsewhere on NBC, The Cape’s final episode dropped to a 1.1 rating while Harry’s Law saw a tenth of a point rise to 1.8 in the demo.

  1. According to an inside source of some one who has spoilers this is going to be the last season of Chuck.

    • Dude, do you run around on all the Chuck-forums posting negative stuff about season 5?

    • Ok, I don’t know how valid that is, but I’m starting to freak out! Mel…. HELP!!!

    • Having spoilers and knowing the status of a show’s pick up, especially 6 weeks BEFORE the network makes a decision, are two very different things. Nothing has been decided yet.

    • http://www.hulu.com/bestinshow vote for chuck

      • chuckfanfromBarbados

        just did
        CHUCK 60%
        BIG BANG THEORY 40%

      • chuckfanfromBarbados

Speaking of voting, I haven’t read/heard about the next round of E ONLINE! polls for the best couples on TV. Last time, CHUCK AND SARAH were in Game 1.1(I think) and we were winning so does anyone have an idea of when the next round will begin or is the poll over?

      • Chuck and Sarah were (*gasp*) knocked out of that poll. Sad but true.

      • chuckfanfromBarbados

Oh (sigh) well there will be more polls for us to vote in

  2. That just what i heard though

  3. who did you hear it from? CHuck haters have been saying it will be canceled since day one.

  4. 1.7 AGAIN…thats not good. When is the save Chuck Bus starting again?

    • It already has – we’re currently targeting Cloud B, makers of the Sleep Sheep that appeared in the February 21st episode. Buy their product, tell them you saw it on Chuck, and let them know it was advertising money well spent.

      • Mel, do you know if this “Reward TV” has much impact on Chuck viewership? I noticed that is an outlet of Nielsen Co., but just wondering how effective this site is.
I signed up and participated on their page about watching the show and commercials, but it took awhile to get to that page. So not sure how many people would want to wade through all of that, unless I went about it wrong.

  5. Is there Chuck next week? There wasn’t a preview after the episode so I am kinda worried I won’t get my Chuck fix next week

    • Sorry no Chuck March 7th . ” The Event ” has a two hour return ep. Chuck back on March 14th
With ep 4.18 ” Chuck vs the A Team ” . Hold on buddy .

  6. whether we like it or not, nbc is looking at the business side of things. if they cant get enough advertising, they would surely stir things up. if they get more viewers, then it entices advertisers. if there will be more advertisers, then they can continuously produce the show.

  7. That what network do. In the end it all business. I mean I am heartbroken right now and to be honest kind of depressed (I know it just a show)but we knew it happen some day. Just wish we could get one more season a 13 ep deal to wrap it up. But for right now just enjoy what we got and hope the showrunners wrap it all up in a nice way for us.

    • Curtis, the show has NOT been canceled nor should we assume this is the last season. Season 5 is absolutely a possibility.

  8. This should boost everybody’s spirits about getting a season 5. I’ve been meaning to post this comment for a while now, but haven’t had time because of college. I like spoilers because I don’t mind knowing what is going to happen because I like to see how it happens. Because of this, I check SpoilerTV regularly. They posted an article a while back (February 9th) that asked Schwartz about getting renewed for a 5th season. He said that Chuck’s ratings have been solid for the most part this season and that he thinks that NBC is really happy with how the show has done. If you want to find the article on SpoilerTV, once you’re on the show’s page (NBC button drop down and click on “Chuck”), scroll all the way down and click the “older articles” button. You will need to do this a few times to get to the postings from early February. The post is labeled “Latest from Ausiello – 9th February 2011.

  9. First time posting!

First of all, this has turned to be something quite depressing for me, particularly staying at a 1.7 for 5 episodes in a row. A steady 1.7 is no longer something to be happy like the 1.9’s. The worse is yet to happen. Daylight savings and the return of Dancing with the Stars are coming back, and that may put us at possibly a 1.5 (noting the half hour breakdowns, “Vs. the First Bank of Evil” hit a new low 1.6, so there’s a chance we may hit even lower in return) unless there’s viewer awareness and it remains steady.

As a big Chuck fan that always gets delighted each week despite some weak spots, I have finally accepted the fact that this “may be” the last season. There’s new people in charge of NBC and they may not have the same patience like the previous heads or see anything atfractive with constant 1.7’s in danger of going lower. So now there’s that to deal with.

My suggestion for fans going through the new campaign would be to ask for a friday burn off final season as a reward for everything that has been done for the show until now. That would be a better persuassion and could be even better than gunning for more after that. And since 100 is no longer the magic number for syndication, it “may” work and 91 episode syndication would be awesome, like The O.C.’s 92 episode syndication. If it doesn’t, then let’s just hope Schwartz & Fedak prepare episode 24 as an in case series finale so that all this hard work does not feel in vain. Schwartz manage to do that with The O.C. mere weeks before its ending, so let’s hope lightning strikes twice and satisfies all of us. I would hate for everyone to feel cheated in the end if it doesn’t happen that way.

    • I’m pretty sure that a large cause of the fall in ratings from 2.0s to 1.7s is the fact that NBC hasn’t been promoting the show as much during the spring season as they were during the fall season. I have no idea why they reduced the promotion, maybe Mel could help answer that question. But if you don’t promote a show as much, it’s ratings are going to drop. That’s just common sense. What I really don’t understand is how they promote the Cape and Harry’s Law so much while Chuck is airing. The Cape is dying a slow and painful death, getting abysmal 1.3s and 1.2s the last several weeks. Since not that many people watch Chuck (unfortunately), why not use that money to promote Chuck more so that the lead in gets more viewers and then air 1 or 2 promos for the other 2 during Chuck.

When you say that new people are in charge of NBC, I’ll assume you’re talking about Comcast. I would be surprised if Comcast doesn’t give the show some more love because over the last 6 months when they were in the process of making the deal to buy NBC, they made Zach the star of their Xfinity commercials, so I figured they knew it was a good show. Recently, they’ve switched to using Glee in their commercials, which I think is a stupid move money-wise because Glee doesn’t need any more exposure or love and Chuck obviously does. I’ve never really known how to interpret that switch in the commercials as good or bad for Chuck, but I’m hoping Comcast will still support the show. They also have more money, of course, which you would think would allow them to keep it on the air easier.

I’m pretty sure episode 24 will be designed to be a possible series finale. Fedak and Schwartz have been doing that for a while now. The season 2 finale, episodes 13 and 19 of season 3, and (so far) episode 13 of season 4 were all designed to be possible series finales.

      • @Tyler, agree with you. Kind of forgot about the Xfinity commercials. But like I said earlier, let’s hope Comcast has some patience with this low numbers particularly going towards Daylight Savings. I’m hoping the drop isn’t as heavy as last year, because that was almost suicidal.

As for promotion, apart from the premiere and the 2 return episodes, I’ve found it to be quite even with both fall and winter seasons. And while the steadiness can be “something”, like the Podcast said, a 1.7 is not the safetiest place to be right now with all the danger looming ahead. I’ll keep crossing my fingers that those 5.3 million viewers are aware of Daylight Savings and be prepared, because that would be a huge boost if it is still steady. Even with the “2.0 towards 1.7” drop (which I still assume was 50/50 drop based on turn off for “Vs. The Gobbler” and many “49ners” turning 50) we Chuck fans have demonstrated total loyalty, and it shows in the total viewership (even if it doesn’t matter) thats remained steady for 6 weeks in a row. Maybe this preemption might help us to gear up (still crossing fingers…)

As for finales, that’s not entirely truth. Season 3 & 4’s episodes’ 13 are the only ones that worked as proper “series” finales. “Vs The Ring” and “Vs The Ring Part II” only worked as great season finales but with no closure whatsoever. Hopefully episode 24 balances the equation and it trully eorks both ways, but not in a way that the “series” finale part feels safe for cancellation.
