Sarah & Ellie: What ‘Chuck’ Really Needs Is A Little Girl Talk

With all the time and effort that is spent focusing on the relationships in Chuck’s world, there is one relationship whose development has been sadly lacking during the first two seasons. It’s one I hope the writers will consider delivering more of in the coming season: the friendship between the two main women in Chuck’s life, his “girlfriend” Sarah, and his beloved sister Ellie.

Sarah tries to reassure Ellie about Chuck's future
Sarah tries to reassure Ellie about Chuck's future

There is no question but that Ellie has been protective of her little brother, and has seemed thrilled over the positive changes she has witnessed since Sarah entered Chuck’s life. You would think it only natural that Ellie would seek to bond more with her, and establish a more sisterly rapport, right? Yet, as we impatiently wait for season three to arrive, we have had only two opportunities thus far in the series to witness the two women bond by engaging in a little girl talk. I, for one, have enjoyed these rare moments immeasurably, and have seen many other fans make similar commentary indicating a hope for more of them in the future.

Perhaps we are to assume there are so few Sarah and Ellie moments because Sarah avoids them. Could that be due to her seeming discomfort in being alone with Ellie? Perhaps she’s afraid that Ellie will be able to see through the lies if she gets too close? The uncertainty that’s apparent in Sarah’s expressions and body language in those scenes is just one of the reasons, however, that the scenes are so endearing to the audience. We get to see Sarah really make an effort. We get to see Ellie reaching out to someone she considers a friend. Someone who, unbeknownst to Ellie, doesn’t really have the background and skill set to know what to do or how to respond in the situation. Who could forget their scene in “Chuck Versus the Undercover Lover”? A drunken Ellie desperately needing someone to discuss her relationship woes, and an uncomfortable Sarah trying to get away. Or their scene in “Chuck Versus Tom Sawyer”, where Ellie’s concern that Chuck has no direction in his life is put to rest by Sarah’s “Chuck is like a duck” analogy.

Ellie leans on Sarah after a fight with Awesome.
Ellie looks to Sarah for advice after a fight with Awesome.

Tensions are likely to occur in Ellie’s marriage next season, due to Devon now being involved in the spy world and sworn to secrecy. Lies will be inevitable, and Ellie is far too intuitive to not notice something is amiss. This would be a perfect opportunity for Ellie to seek out Sarah for advice, venting, or just a little emotional support. Sarah learned a lot about true friendship in season two, so she should be better equipped to provide that support. How will she handle seeing her friend (and Chuck’s closest family member) in pain, knowing she could help, and not being able to do so? I hope this is something we will get to see explored onscreen. Although I know there probably will not be a lot of scenes dedicated to girl talk, Sarah and Ellie’s scenes together are certainly worthy of more than one per season.

Chuck vs the Goodbye: 10 Years Later

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Chuck series finale. It feels like a decade …

  1. I think Sarah is not only afraid Ellie will see through her but that she feels uncomfortable & guilty about having to lie to her. How hard it must be to have lived your entire life lying about who you are, even what your real name is. How could you ever really get close to someone? It’s no wonder Sarah really didn’t understand what having a best friend meant to Chuck.
But as easy as it is for Sarah to lie when she’s on a mission, as part of her cover, it’s nice to see her struggle to do so with the people that are now considered friends. She really is becoming a real girl.
I too hope we get more girl bonding in Season 3.

  2. I think the question of what Sarah will do re: Ellie this season is a fascinating one, and I’m glad you chose to do an article on it. You’ve pretty much covered the situation here with one, small exception: The possibility that the complications due to the Intersect 2.0 force Sarah to distance herself from Chuck and drive her to find alternatives – namely establishing a relationship with his family.

Is it possible that, rather than draw further into herself as would have been the norm before the Burbank assignment, Sarah instead reaches out to Ellie? Perhaps it starts inadvertently, with an intuitive Ellie noticing something is wrong with Sarah during a chance encounter. Could Sarah find that cautiously leaking some of her issues with Chuck leads to some relief to her frustrations? Or would her innate awkwardness with discussing emotions resist even Ellie’s motivated attempts to pry out more information about spy world?

It seems both characters are going to have strong motivations to bond. The only question is whether TPTB have budgeted any screen time for playing out this potential development.

  3. GREAT article! Hopefully if we only get a 13 episode season, there will be some aspect of the Sarah/Ellie relationship incorporated into it. That was such a great moment in “Chuckdom” when Ellie was a little wasted and wanted to talk everything out with Sarah and Sarah looked for whatever way she could to RUN!!

Sarah NEEDS some female “bonding. Chuck has the Morgan “bromance” which I think Sarah now understands after Chuck’s explanation of their friendship. One reason I’m hoping that Anna is still a part of the show is because there’s even an opportunity for a little “girl time” between Sarah and Anna as well. After all, the “boyfriends” the had were/are best buds. There was that one cute moment between Sarah and Anna when Sarah told her that she always considered her a friend – or something along that line.

O.K. If a “romance – in the purely platonic sense – between to guys (“bros”)is called a BROmance, then what do you call it when it’s between two girls? (And please, nobody say the L word, thank you). Regardless, even though I’ve never seen the movie(s), I’ve seen enough of the previews to say that Chuck could do with a few more “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” moments and a few less of the “As the World Turns” moments. 😉

So definitely, YES, A BIG, BIG, HUGE YES to more bonding between Sarah and Ellie. As I’ve mentioned before, Sarah is such an interesting character – I think she’s the most appealing part of the show (and I don’t mean just because of Yvonne’s looks) – but because there is so much more that can be explored about her as a person. The progression of her relationship with Chuck is one obvious vehicle by which to do that – and by all means so would be her relationship with Ellie. So BRING IT ON!!!

Girl Power!! (I can’t believe I actually said that!) 🙂

And once again – GREAT article!

  4. Great article and I couldn’t agree more. We’ve had those two awkward exchanges and lots more family situations (dinners, game nights) that show how much closer they have grown. You don’t make just any woman your maid of honor!
I also like the idea of including Anna for a girls night out scenario. Ellie could guide them both and I think she would enjoy the role. Anna has reached out to Sarah (Best Friend) and she could bury the hatchet with Ellie over whatever perceptions she has about Morgan and Ellie’s relationship. But with only 13 episodes, if it’s just Ellie and Sarah, I would still be more than happy. Sarah needs to loosen up and learn to be in a real family.

  5. Unfortunately Ellie-Sarah bonding doesn’t seem to be in the “creative” team’s bucket of ideas, it seems they are more interested in Sarah-Shaw bonding and
just for our benefit(so we couldn’t claim that Chuck is a loser) Chuck-Hannah bonding as well.
It’s a shame though, some very good fics(by very good writers) dealt heavily in the intricacies of Making Sarah a part of the Bartowskis and the main issue in that is connection on a personal level between Ellie and Sarah, It’s a pitty we wouldn’t see that on the show.

  6. Super article happy. I am a big proponent of Ellie/Sarah scenes. Hope to see this brought up more as we have been told there will be more focus on the real world this season than in the previous two.

  7. This article is a great idea on two fronts — first, the Sarah/Ellie dynamic hasn’t been developed at all, and second (sorry to sound like a broken record), this is a really good Sarah-centric storyline, and there have been far too few of them on “Chuck.” Other than Karina, a toxic female friendship if there ever was one, Sarah’s not close to any truly warm and friendly women, and more attention on her relationship with Ellie might give Yvonne and Sarah a chance to show their talents more than they have.

I’m starting to wonder if Sarah’s going to be the one to spill the beans to Ellie about Chuck, Awesome, and most important, Sarah herself. The Ellie Explosion has been a long time in coming, and I wonder if it’s going to be Sarah — not Chuck — who makes it happen. This would not only be a massive act of trust and kindness on Sarah’s part, but one more sign that she’s put the cold killer persona far behind her.

    PLEASE, writers, make this happen!

    • Great and interesting points Lisa. I’ve always wondered myself how Ellie would find out about Chuck and his secret spy life but I never thought of Sarah being the one to do it. Now the more I think about it, the more I actually really like the idea. It would certainly be a neat twist on things!

  8. Excellent article and thank you so much for bringing this issue up. The friendship between Sarah and Ellie was exactly what I thought the show could improve and expand on.

Despite the very few scenes both Sarah and Ellie have been in, I always enjoyed them. As characters I think they would have great scenes together given their respective relationships to both Chuck and the situations they generally find themselves in. As actors both Yvonne and Sarah are fantastic and play off each other quite well. Nothing is worse than watching 2 actors (whether male or female) interact with one another and have zero chemistry. The great fact is that the whole cast in general work so well with one another that hopefully the writers will throw more attention and screen time towards the relationships between the female characters of the show.

  9. Happy,

It is an great article. I think your report points out a larger issue of what to do with the ladies on the show. At SDCC, the panel only two women. I would like to see the bonding you mention and see the growth in those moments. Morgan and Chuck have them, How about Ellie and Sarah? Talking about developing the vulnerability of Sarah in the context of the Bartowski family. Sounds delicious – take the next step for Sarah, she wasn’t going to go with Bryce b/c of Chuck, give her more reason by developing the love in the family.

Your observations create an interesting story arc for more than just one season. The love of the family saves Casey, Sarach and why not- throw in the general!

  10. And as long as we’re at it, let’s bring in the possibility of Mom Bartowski eventually being brought into this female dynamic, or call it the “daughter dynamic.” Consider how Sarah and Ellie would have to behave with the long-lost mother in the picture. Does Sarah then reveal her true identity to Ellie and Mom or not? I guess that depends whether Mom Bartowski is a true ally of Team Bartowski, right? That could be an interesting twist — no matter what new skills Chuck possesses to defend himself and others, I think Sarah is always going to be torn between her desire to love Chuck and his family like a normal person and her duty to protect assets and country. I see nothing wrong with this, BTW.

    • Excuse me Lise, But If Sarah is always gonna be conflicted between her ‘love’ and her duty, than there’s no future for them…and a such, no real need or
justification to having this female fraternity with Ellie.
So, I do see something wrong with that, and I believe that as a part of her growth, Sarah will need to let go of the duty part in her psyche(like some good writers have done in the best fics), in order to become a real person.

      • But If Sarah is always gonna be conflicted between her ‘love’ and her duty, than there’s no future for them…and a such, no real need or
justification to having this female fraternity with Ellie.

What? Are you saying that there’s no point for Sarah and Ellie to be friends if Sarah’s not romantically linked to Chuck?

Like two females can’t maintain a friendship without Chuck being a common denominator? Sarah and Ellie are smart, independent women who that may share other common interest that does not include Chuck. Sarah as a person is not defined by Chuck, nor should relationships (romantic or platonic) be reduced to such.

I can see Ellie and Sarah maintain a very functional friendship that doesn’t revolve them sitting around talking about Chuck. Ellie being the mothering type can coax Sarah out of her shell. Maybe she can reveal a little more about herself.

      • that’s exactly what I’m saying.
It has nothing to do with the fact that they are both smart and independent women, they know each other by association…Chuck.
It’s not like they met in pottery club…lol, and for Sarah , knowing Ellie was a bonus to her part cover-part real relationship with Chuck.
It was her way of taking a glimpse into what ‘real life’ looks, and by that same token, what real family(as strange as it sounds regarding the Unorthodox Bartowski household) feels like.
That’s why Lisa’s post is wrong in my opinion. Sarah can’t maintain that duality forever, because it will hinder any chance of real life with Chuck(even if their both spies).I do however see Ellie as a catalyst for Sarah to understand that and prompt her into doing something about it.

      • I’m sorry, i don’t understand your logic. Why shouldn’t they have a friendship that exists independent of their relationship with Chuck? Being smart independent women has EVERYTHING to do with it. It means they can think and decide for themselves. They’re not just one-half of a couple.

Sarah and Ellie deserves an on screen friendship just as much as Chuck/Morgan or Lester/Jeff. Just because they were introduced to each other via Chuck, they shouldn’t have to be restricted to being just the sister/girlfriend relationship.

No matter what happens with Hannah, Chuck and Sarah will remain friends. If C & S can remain friends, there’s nothing wrong with Ellie and Sarah building on the friendship they started.

Ellie & Sarah get a long, they like each other. That’s enough of a foundation to build a friendship on, chuck or no chuck.

Ellie isn’t a bonus prize that Sarah gets for being with Chuck. You don’t think very highly of either girls if you really think that.

      • I believe that as a part of her growth, Sarah will need to let go of the duty part in her psyche(like some good writers have done in the best fics), in order to become a real person.

lol A “real person” as oppose to the fake person she is now?

  11. I would like to see Ellie and Sarah bonding in S3 as well, but I’m just wondering how Ellie will relate to Sarah in S3, if Chuck and Sarah’s romance is off again. If it is in fact off again as we wont be sure until we see the episodes. Maybe they could use Ellie later in the season to get them back together. Or perhaps Awesome and Ellie working as a tag team. Ellie having a heart-to-heart with Sarah, while Capt Awesome works on Chuck. Another “Dude what were you thinking” line from Awesome might just be what the doctor ordered.

Maybe the could throw Anna in the mix for good measure. She can offer advice to Sarah, like Sarah offered Anna in Best Friend.
Yes a Ellie/Sarah/Anna girls night out could be great.

  12. queuebert, you are trying to find the needle in the haystack…
Ellie and Sarah know each other through Chuck and therefore are connected(eternally)through him, that doesn’t subtract anything from their whole
as a person, or a woman, or a body of intelligence…it just correspond to the events in the show.
The show is not about the friendship between certain groups of females(or males, for that matter), it’s about Chuck…and the reason they know each other has to do with him and his life as he lived it before that E-Mail from Bryce.
So, don’t get offended…but if Chuck was out of the picture , so was the connection between them, unless as I said earlier. The female frat. is served
    to mend some charah rapture.
and regarding the ‘thing’ with Hannah, who would want to see a show where Chuck and Sarah are just friends…

    • What needle in a haystack are you talking about? Is it because I believe Sarah and Ellie deserve each other’s friendship? Because I don’t think everything in Sarah’s life should revolve around Chuck?

Yes, the show is about Chuck. It’s also made up of characters that have lives independently from Chuck. Every supporting character on the show is allowed to have a storyline that Chuck is not a part of. The benefit of that is that we, the audience, get to see them develop into well-rounded characters.

A Sarah & Ellie friendship corresponds perfectly with the show. Has Ellie not stated on many occasion what a great girl Sarah is? Was Sarah not a part of Ellie’s wedding? That indicates more than just sisterly approval. Ellie thinks very highly of Sarah, and vice versa.

Ellie could be a great asset to Sarah’s transition into civilian life. If she can get Sarah to admit her feelings for Chuck then i’d be a happy clam, but the important part is that Sarah having someone to bond with. She needs friends, not just Chuck.

Regardless of how they met, or why they met, it shouldn’t keep them from being friends. It’s not a conflict of interest if they both care about Chuck, it’s just another thing they have in common.

P.S. I would STILL watch the show if C/S were just friends.

    • I think you have a poor definition of friendship. Chuck and Sarah can have a platonic relationship as deep as any married couple. I would love to see them as a team. I don’t want to get off topic since this has already been discussed to death in other threads but of course I would still watch the show.

    • To say that if Chuck was out of the picture the girls would no longer be friends is a stretch. In fact, I think that cheapens their feelings for Chuck. If I ever lost my brothers (God forbid), I certainly wouldn’t cut off all contact with my sisters-in-law. We’ve formed bonds that are independent of my brothers. Sure, we probably wouldn’t have been close or possibly even met if they hadn’t married my brothers, but they did and our friendship is an added blessing. I’m also very close to one of my younger brother’s ex-girlfriends, now married with 2 kids, who I would not have met if she hadn’t dated my brother. I was sad when they broke up and bawled at her wedding (erm…awkward!), but we didn’t need her being with my brother for our friendship to continue.

  13. The encounter between Ellie and Sarah, and the full uncover of reality is an impossible option, because it will smash the show, in one way or another.

In such a scenario, a full-scale, real life drama will explode.

Ellie is the more ‘normal life’ character of the show.

How she will react at the news that his brother is dating an assassin? That her life, plus his brother’s and husband’s ones have been irremediably endangered and ruined forever? That her whole life has become a lie, his marriage compromised? Remember what her father done: went as much away as possible from his sons, for a reason.

This normally ends in tragedy. Ellie can try to commit suicide or kill Sarah.

This, is a plausible scenario in normal life. No “girl talk”.. there’s a normal girl/married woman on one side, and a monster at the other.

    • Ellie’s a Bartowski. As part of the family genome they’re more flexible and stronger than they look at first glance. Ellie may seem like the most fragile one of the three, but look how she pulled Awesome together when she thought he was coming unglued. Chuck told Roark “…and believe me, you don’t want to see her mad.” I don’t think the real life drama will “explode” if Ellie and Sarah became friends or even if she found out the truth about her brother’s and her husband’s lives. I think she might freak out at first, who wouldn’t?, but then she’d find a way to accept it.

      • Yes… for sure…. in fantasy. She can “ACCEPT IT” only if she’s psycho…

      • Ummm… Chuck was in Comic Con right? It is at its heart science fiction and never a reality show. If we can accept Chuck getting government secrets downloaded into his brain, then I think we can accept his sister being able to take the news.

      • That’s selling Ellie pretty short. She was able to welcome her father back after he’d been gone for years with no explanation. You don’t think she’d be able to accept that her brother is actually a spy? She’s an intelligent woman; once she gets over the initial shock, she’s probably going to wonder why she didn’t figure it out sooner.

      • With no offense, but sometimes i’m surprised how childish people can be: ellie never knew what his father’s real job was, what he was involved in and why he left, and chuck never “accepted” to be part of this crazy world, he’s been brutally forced at the very beginning. So was dad bartosky a fool when he decided to left his family, his sons, basting his heart? You say yes, since in your opinion “normal people” have no problems to accept this f****** craziness with nothing more than a headache..

No ellie can never become aware of all this without losing her mind, or the show losing his credibility,

      • Where is my last comment gone?

  16. Again, what I find great about this show is that the writers are not hesitant to explore every character dynamic possible as long as it supports the main arc of the show, which in my opinion, is Chuck becoming a true hero. This show has always built its path on character as much as events, and that’s what I like about it. This season, we’re going to see a new side to Awesome’s relationship with Team Bartowski now that he must support Chuck while presumably keeping the secret safe from Ellie. Likewise, I think attention to the Sarah/Ellie relationship will not only create storylines that affect Chuck, but draw attention to how Sarah and Ellie are evolving personally.

Sarah has to strike that balance between talented spy and a woman with a real life. Ellie, it would seem, will eventually have to learn Chuck’s secret, and as I suggested earlier, Sarah may provide an interesting twist in how that happens.

I’m not sure I understand the various arguments made against the Sarah/Ellie dynamic, so I’ll just say this — I think drawing a straight line between any set of characters on this show makes it more interesting, period. And I believe if they do it right, Ellie’s discovery of Chuck, Sarah, Casey and Awesome’s complicity is going to be a major game-changer that’s only going to enhance the show.

  17. What a great article, Happydayz. It gave me one of those forehead slapping, “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that?” moments. In a 13 week season I’d would look forward to a couple of these scenes, comparable to the “Chuck is like a duck.” segment that’s so memorable. But in a 22 week season, a whole episode with the B or even A story devoted to the Ellie/Sarah relationship would be a amazing. It would be as revealing as Casey and Ilsa.

PS I’ve never seen a collection of comments that were so well written and so well considered. Chuck fans really do seem to be a breed apart.

  18. I have to agree with Bucko and say that I’m enjoying the discussion and well written comments thus far. Score one for the thoughtful and engaging Chuck fans!

Just to further add my two cents. I love Chuck but sometimes the plot points stretch credibility a bit but personally as a viewer I don’t mind stepping out of the box once and awhile and enjoy the show for what it is. What ultimately grounds the show (for me anyway), is the characters and their relationships. No matter how silly or far out things get, this element always brought back the ‘human side’ to the show. So in essence I wholeheartedly agree with what Lisa wrote in her last post especially in regards to the writers exploring every character dynamic possible as long as it supports the main arc of Chuck eventually becoming a true hero. Expanding on the Sarah/Ellie relationship would just add on another textured layer to this Chuckverse.

Personally I just really enjoyed the few scenes Sarah and Ellie had together and would really enjoy seeing more interaction in future episodes. If the writers can show us the friendship between Jeff and Lester they can surely write in a few more Sarah/Ellie scenes.

    • “If the writers can show us the friendship between Jeff and Lester they can surely write in a few more Sarah/Ellie scenes.”

well said, diane, and i agree wholeheartedly with your entire comment!

  19. Great article.

Funny timing too. We were watching Chuck vs the Broken Heart last night (the 10 year old is a Chuck addict) where the B story was Awesome’s bachelor party. My wife made a comment that it would have been terrific if they had a sequence showing Sarah attending Ellie’s Bachelorette party. As a bride’s maid, she would have been expected to attend. As everyone has already pointed out, Sarah isn’t exactly comfortable in a traditional “girl” role and hasn’t had too many (if any) close female friends. Seeing her try to get through a group Spa day or male stripper party while trying to fit in would have been funny.

  20. A great post by happydayz! I agree it would be nice to see some bonding between Ellie and Sarah. I think the Undercover Lover and Tom Sawyer were the only two episodes where they were alone together. It is an unexplored area that would be very enjoyable to see. In fact it could very well make the show better over all(and I not referring to the direction of the show in which ever way it goes. No one knows for sure and we will all find out together in March and April). It might be nice to add Anna in there to, because I don’t think she has anyone to talk to either based on the Best Friends episode. A girls night out or something. Definitely would be a delight to see. More of this and less of the angst. I would be quite happy with it.

  21. AMAZING JOB HAPPYDAYZ!!!!!

Chuck is like a duck girl to girl heart to hearts in season 3!!!!

  22. I cannot believe I just had to delete several comments for crossing the line into personal attacks. Those whose comments were deleted, please take a step back, take a deep breath and remember that we’re all fans of the same show. I don’t want to put people on moderation, but if the personal attacks continue, that’s what will happen.

    • Sorry Mel, But I was just replying to incessant personal attacks on me, while
up until now, I only posted and criticize show related issues.
I won’t respond to personal posts again.
I hope you’ll be vigilant in other cases as well(of personal attacks).

      • Thank you, Alex. I appreciate your point of view and hope that you’re able to follow the thread of how this happened. We welcome respectful critiques of the show here, because of course nothing’s perfect no matter how much we enjoy it, but please do stay on topic. If you feel that you’re being unfairly attacked and I haven’t caught it, you can always email me at mel@chucktv.net and I’ll attend to it as quickly as possible.

  23. Mel, so sorry. It was really all in good banter for me and took nothing personal. I should sense when the sentiment is not reciprocated. Again, I apologize and will behave from now on.

    • Thank you, Imkeh. It is easy to get carried away, especially on the Internet when we can’t see each other’s faces or hear a tone of voice. I appreciate you taking responsibility for your comments. Please do continue to join our on-topic discussions. As others have stated, it’s wonderful that most of the fandom can engage in such thoughtful analysis and critique of the show.

  24. To have more girl talk between them would be good idea. it will allow the characters to get closer as well a develop Sarah’s character a bit more.

  25. Just thought of something. What if Sarah has to try and smooth out the relationship with Ellie and Awesome. Ellie thinks he is cheating on her because of all the excuses he is using to leave the house in the evenings (for spy missions).

We have seen that the one thing Capt Awesome doesn’t do very well is lie. Remember how he freaked out after he learned Chuck was a spy and he was trying to cover for him with Ellie? So I could see Ellie seeing right through his excuses.

This could be both touching and very humourous.

    • that’s actually a good idea, serves as both bonding and allows Sarah to come closer to the Bartwoski-Woodcombe inner circle.
