Chuck EP Robert Duncan McNeill on Fan Concerns About Finale Twist

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! If you haven’t watched the Chuck season finale yet, then leave now!

Fans are in a turmoil this morning following the twist at the end of last night’s Chuck season 4 finale, “Chuck vs. the Cliffhanger”. I had the opportunity to talk with Robert Duncan McNeill, one of Chuck‘s executive producers and the director of the finale. We talked about the finale in some detail, looked back at the previous four seasons, and talked about the future of the show. The full interview will be in this week’s episode of Chuck vs. the Podcast, but I wanted to share this quote from Robbie about Morgan, Chuck, and the Intersect:

“I agree with the fans, totally. I think that’s another key to our show, Chuck has to have a unique nature that allows the Intersect to function the way that it has. We’ve established that in the mythology. I don’t think that when we come back in season 5 that we’re going to see Morgan as an Intersect that equals Chuck at all. I think it’ll be a Morgan version of what that does. I think it’s important, like the fans are suggesting, to distinguish that Chuck is special and that he’s the only one that can use the Intersect in the way that we’ve seen it succeed so well in the last four years.”

We talk more about that twist, the wedding, the future, the past, and more in the full interview coming your way later this week.

  1. I have posted this before, but it seems odd to me that others do not see the ending as a dream sequence. The last act of the show HAS to be a dream that Sarah is experiencing from the hotel bed. Earlier in the episode, Morgan is speaking to Sarah about how Chuck saved him from bullies when they were kids by threatening the bullies with the Gallactic Federation which Morgan then says “there is no such thing”. In the final act, Morgan is shown as the minister who marries them by the “power vested by the Gallactic Federation”.

Morgan also tells Sarah in the hospital bed about what Chuck has been doing to try to save her life and we can assume that he tells her that Chuck is in trouble with the CIA.

With this information being absorbed into Sarah’s brain while in the hospital from Morgan, she then dreams of the wedding sequence, the wedding present of millions, and then Morgan becoming the intersect.

In my opinion, season 5 will start with Sarah waking up in the hospital room with Chuck holding her hand and season 5 will end with Chuck and sarah REALLY getting married.

That’s my take anyway. Great episode to a great show…

    • I was curious if it was a dream myself. The final wedding sequence (walking from the church and in the limo) you can see that both Chuck and Sarah have the twist ties on their ring fingers.

      • I really like your way of thinking R Boyles and yes they did wear those threads :O and morgan being the one to declare them man and wife? and then him being the driver? and then them getting so much money? and then morgen becomeing the intersect? huh that might go that way

    • I agree with you. This could very well have been a dream and season 5 could even “start” with the wedding.

But one thing intrigues me in what Robert Duncan McNeill says: “I don’t think that when we come back in season 5 that we’re going to see Morgan as an Intersect that equals Chuck at all. I think it’ll be a Morgan version….”

A Morgan version of the Intersect could be hilarious! I keep picturing Morgan in the Push Mix doing the yoga thing and having his wet suit cut off by the laser beams! So, I think a “serious” Intersect in Chuck and a “Morgan Intersect” working together could be great! Almost like a “Get Smart” kind of thing.

      • stooge101: See I always thought of Morgan as a normal kinda cool/funny sidekick. But if Morgan has the intersect the show wouldn’t be called Chuck, it would be called Morgan.

    • This would be a great start to the new season if it resolved in the first episode with a real marriage. Having another season of “will they finally get married” would carry this thread too long. But, it would make for a very engaging first episode.

I did think the wedding was a dream with the sparkly edges and soft focus in that scene. But once they got back to the Buy More and Castle, it was back to normal focus. Plus, I doubt her dream would include Decker’s statements/threat. And if CIVICde is right (I haven’t gone back to check), the real rings on their fingers wouldn’t fit.

Still, if it’s done right, it’s a real cool idea.

Your right Five G & R Boyles. The season ender for Season 4 could & might very well end up being a Dream Sequence & Chuck & Sarah could very well not be married yet at all?

If this is the case, than I have to say, as a fan who has watched this show & waited for the last 4 yrs, for this particular event to happen… It really pisses me off even further.

I am glad Chuck got a 5th season but as a poster said yesterday if this show keeps bleeding viewers, well into season 5 & if Chuck & Sarah really are not yet married & Sarah, is still in the coma (Which we never did see her come out of BTW) Than, we as fans who have waited for this wedding to happen may not get the chance to see it in season 5 at all? Also, if the writers did not marry them after S 4 “For Real” when they faced almost certain cancelation, it makes fans wonder if they ever will marry Chuck & Sarah for “Real?”

Your Spec definitly has legs, & as a fan of this show & the Chuck & Sarah Romance. I am now getting angrier by the day!

        BMB.

      • The wedding was legit.

        Really Mel?

With Morgan officiating with the Power Invested In Him, Fron The Inter Galactic Federation Of Planets?

I felt, as I said yesterday that they made a bit of a joke out of the ceremony & as I said yesterday, I really did not like that.

I hope your right Mel & I hope S 5 provides Concrete Proof of the marriage Of Chuck & Sarah?

Because, if it was a Dream Sequence & they are not yet married & they drag it out to the end of the show & for some reason the show is canceled before fans would get to see them exchange vows for “Real”

I think many of the shows fans would be uset by that.

Again, I Hope your right Mel?

      • And I hope you listen to my interview with RDM when the podcast is released. 🙂

        Ah, Ha!

So, you are saying that you did get definitive word that the wedding was “Real” & “Legal”!

        Great!

As a fan, I still did not like the way the Chuck & Sarah wedding was done in the S – 4 Finale though.

        Thanks Mel!

      • Personally, i cant help but feeling that the whole
morgan intersect thing is a bad idea, i mean i love him, dont get me wrong but the show is called ‘chuck’ after-all.

I was always the guy who constantly nagged anybody i met to watch he show as you couldnt understand it unless you watch it for yourself, i will defend chuck to the end of the earth as it is, well…chuck. BUT……..

I feel the time has come to say that for me the show has lost some of the sparkle which made it so incredibly SPECIAL back in the days on season one and two. i mean there’s no single reason why this is, but it seems to me that when he lost his goofy ‘dog’ like hairstyle he lost his innocence and along with that some of the charm which made him so great.

despite my ramblings the story line really is always brilliant and constantly managing to keep me on my toes.

I love the way caseys story has progressed and idea of them starting there own spy team without any government agencies sounds great.

        thought id just voice that.

    • It cannot be a dream, otherwise, they would have use a fade to white in the previous sequence, like they did for all flashbacks during the episode. (Fade to white is commonly used to initiate a flashback or dream sequence, as well as a few other usages).

Plus, it was followed by a “2 weeks later” sequence, which obviously cannot be part of a dream. So no, definitely, it cannot be a dream, even if they added some fantasy to the sequence, because it’s Chuck and it needed some fun, and because a wedding is some kind of dream that comes true.

    • I think the wedding maybe was a dream. But they are married.

In the church wedding chuck and sarah are wearing the string rings as per the practice run.

But in the buymore in the end, they are both wearing proper rings

    • i’ve watched the episode 4 times over and my mainstoryline question that kept popping up for season 5 why decker in the end laughs so cynicly. My guess is that Orion a.k.a. Stephen J. Bartowski is somehow still alive they did it before with Daniel Shaw and Bryce larkin. And we did not see a funeral only team bartowski toasting. And who made the new intersect for the goggles?

  2. burt in castle they wear real rings 🙁

    • Maybe after the scam they didn’t have enough money to get good rings, so they decided to save up for a while (which wasn’t an issue any more after the Volkoffs’ wedding present).

  3. Hi All, Have been thinking bout the Question Sarah B (that nice to say) posed regards who could manipulate them all from the begining. Papa B has shown he can. This could have been his Plan all along because he realised he couldn’t do it alone & decided 2 get his family involved. By getting Chuck embeded into the CIA he had some1 on the inside. He knew Chuck’s belief in people would turn agents towards him & thus developing a Team outside its framework but with its knowledge 2 take down the big BADY! What do people think?

  4. when does season 5 start ?

  5. Hi All, If CF/JS were smart they would write a 22 or 24 episode Season 5 so that NBC HAD to pick it up!!!

  6. In the beginning of the wedding scene I thought it was a dream because the sound seemed liked it was in a dream but it must have just been the church because I don’t think it was a dream at all.

To me it feels like they had a longer wedding scene shot to use if it was going to be a series finale and probably would have ended it with Chuck and Sarah driving away with the all the old Chuck/Sarah scenes playing. Everything after the wedding was shot to use if the show was picked up for a 5th season and they had to cut the wedding scene short to squeeze the last part in.

    Just thinking out-loud.

    • I disagree because that episode would have cut and preped for air before they knew Chuck was coming back for real.

I think the episode as is, would have served as a nice ending if the show was not picked up.

The story was complete and the end would show that the team would carry on working together..

  7. What if we learn in season 5 that these was all Chuck’s dream and that he was really in a comma after the intersect was loaded into his brain. That all the characters in his dream were the people he knows in reality….just saying

    • I do not think they would do that, its up there with leaving people dead cough castle.

It would seriously put people off watching any other shows they did, i think we will probably get a very satisfying Push Mix style ending. It just is not the way Josh and Chris roll and I am grateful for that. They take the knocks from the fans and deliver good stuff to us. So thanks Team Chuck.

It will be open for more adventures but there will be closure maybe sarah says “chuck .. hmmm i need a few months break … your going to be a dad”. I for one am very happy they do ending like the way they do in this show its why i come back for more. Got fed up of smallville, castle, stargate. While I hated Chuck season 3 it does have my favourate episode honeymooners and not sure about morgan the intersect. I hope we will see more chuck and sarah moments, with casey and morgan the other Bromance as chuck noted when he was talking about the pre-nup.

The warmth and love and looking back over this season there is so many great moments that remind me why i fell in love with this show. There were moments that i cried.. i do wish we had more wedding it was hard to feel it as it felt like a dream.. but they delivered mostly a good season.

SO chill the only fly in the ointment is morgan intersect and i will wait for comic con to see what they are going to say … i am worried about it but it maybe ok if we do not lose all those wonderful chuck and sarah moments. But if you look back morgan is in them and hes a bigger shipper than us all.

From what i hear they are aiming for A team and Heart to Heart vibe with freelance spies – that sounds aces chuck

  8. Thats a very LAZY way to end the show to me! IF that was the ending alot of fans (myself included) would ask: Why did I waste the last 4 years! It makes all the Character development a void! I think we fans would riot if that happened!!

  9. Just my two cents… The finale showed that there was a huge conspiracy to make all that happened to Chuck occur. The guy stated that everything was planned meticulously. If you take that as true and they are THAT good…then Chuck would have an impossible time trying to escape anything further they have planned for him. The chances of him avoiding their scheme would be exactly zero.

That is, unless something happened that they couldn’t have planned…like say, Morgan getting the intersect.

Just a guess…but the next season will deal with Morgan handling the intersect and how it affects his life. It will most certainly bring Chuck and Morgan closer to one another because, now, Chuck will have someone close to him go through the same thing as he did. They will have a greater understanding of one another.

But, near the end of the season, Chuck will get the intersect back because he is the only one who can use the intersect properly. Morgan’s use of it will be typically “Morgan”, mostly comedic, but with a serious plot-line through it.

To me, this sounds like a serious attempt to expand the Chuck franchise. Maybe they know that the upcoming Friday night time-slot is where most shows are put to die. So, they are setting up a new type of series? Maybe…but it also might be an attempt to bring a new kind of start to the show to get some more viewers interested in it.

No matter, either way I have been a fan of the show since episode one and I will stay faithful to it because they haven’t let me down yet.

Lastly, I’m surprised no one but me has brought this up. Did I hear correctly in the finale that Jeffster is done? Say it isn’t so! I’m a HUGE Jeffster fan and if they aren’t on as the band I’ve come to love…then my sorrow will be great…

  10. I have watched the Cliffhanger several times now and think it is a good episode. However the last five minutes are awful. I have cooled down since my first post and still believe that the intesect problem needs to be addressed in season 5 episode 1. Morgan either gets it out or both he and Chuck have it. The reaon the show is called Chuck is because he is the intersect, We have seen the intersect removed more than once from Chuck and it causes angst. More so than Chara angst. If this show is to make the fans happy, then the producers and writers need to get the intersect back into Chuck where it belongs. I like Morgan but he is there for comic relief not as a main source of action. I said before that the way this was left will defiinitely kill the show. Had this been the actual end, I would have asked for a two hour movie special to fix this. How do we as fans finally get the show fixed so that Chuck gets the intersect back, I am not sure. This I do know, if this was not the final season, the writers set this up to be the end of the show! Lets end it the way the fans want it to end and lets ha13 episodes with great action with Chuck being the intersect for each one. Please let this message be heard by the powers thatbe in the Chuk production world.

  11. I wonder if Morgan was telling Sarah what he thinks is happening. As in “don’t worry, Sarah, I bet Chuck is flying to Russia right now and fixing all of this. I bet he’s riding a cool motorcycle and…”. I’m basing this on the limo scene where Chuck asks him where the driver is and Morgan responds (something to the effect of) “I’ve alwalys been the driver”. Maybe he was “driving” the whole story in the hospital room. Other things I think can support this theory is just how well everything fell into place and how how where some things didn’t, they were just brushed over. For example: when Volkof/Winterbottom finds out about his daughter he just shrugs and agrees to put it on hold. Casey saying “he’s the second best spy I know” sounded more like something Morgan would want Casey to say, the motorcycle just happening to be there, the CAT squad just happening to show up. It all worked out just a little too well.
    What do you think?

    • If Morgan “has always been the driver” then doesn’t it make sense that he is the bigger conspiracy that is referenced at the end of the episode? Has Morgan been hiding his evil behind a veil of comic relief?

      • Lol, Dector did say that it was all planned no coincidence, u might be right. Then again it could be a dream sequence, or Morgan might be just doing his comic relief again and lied when he said I know Kung Fu, he might not be able to store the interect in his brain. Because back in season 1 when Chuck was trying to work out how and why he got the intersect, it was for the fact that he had the ability (photographic memory), just a thought.
