Friday Five: Shows To Watch During Chuck’s Summer Hiatus

I was going to make this week’s Friday Five my fave moments from the finale but I’m still trying to narrow that down to five, so let’s try to solve a problem this week instead: what to watch until Chuck returns in September. Summer is no longer the wasteland of programming it used to be and quality TV abounds!

  1. White Collar – Starring Chuck alumnus Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay as a con artist and an FBI agent, respectively, this take on the buddy cop genre is a slick, fun caper for summer. White Collar returns to USA Network on June 7.
  2. True Blood – Yeah, I know, vampires. I’m not a fan of blood, but I am a fan of interesting stories and I’ve been reading the books this series is based on since 2003. This season looks terrific, and given that it’s based on possibly the best book in the series, it almost can’t miss. True Blood returns to HBO on June 26.
  3. The Closer – It’s Kyra Sedgwick’s final season as LAPD’s Brenda Leigh Johnson, the woman who can get anyone to confess. The Closer returns to TNT on July 11.
  4. Leverage – Speaking of capers, it doesn’t get more fun than watching the Leverage team pull off an elaborate plan each week to take from the rich and give to the poor. Leverage returns to TNT on June 26.
  5. Covert Affairs – Need a spy fix this summer? Gadgets, a kick-butt female lead, and Augie make this a must-watch show for me. Covert Affairs returns on USA Network June 7.

If you’re still not sure you can make it until September without Chuck, we’ve got you covered! Happydayz will be hosting a Summer Rewatch of episodes from all fours seasons beginning tonight, getting us acclimated to the idea of Chuck on Fridays. Details are here.

  1. Your Friday Six is missing Haven.

I got hooked on it through the winter replay when Admiral M told me to check it out. She’s a smart one the Admiral.

    • Wow! You were quick with the comments. :p

As you know, I will agree with you on this. Haven is a quirky little show that tends to surprise you. Lovely build up to the finale of the first season; pleased it got picked up for another.

  2. MyNameIsJeffNImLost

What about Burn Notice? Not everyone has an Intersect. Some of us need the how-to of being a spy. June 23 on USA.

  3. What about The Killing or The Walking Dead?

    • I believe The Killing is wrapping up its first season now, and The Walking Dead doesn’t return until Fall.

  4. And what about InSecurity? 🙂

  5. Excellent choices, Mel! I also thought it’d be fun to take some time this summer and watch some of the other movies and TV shows that the regular & guest cast from Chuck have been in. First up: “My Bodyguard” and “Full Metal Jacket” (which I’m ashamed to say I’ve never seen yet), followed by another rewatch of “Firefly” and “Serenity!” (“The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne…”)

  6. I’m watching Burn Notice and Justice League Unlimited and just started rewatches of BSG and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles when I’m on my elliptical.

  7. I watch Covert Affairs and White Collar already.

Burn Notice would be a good one to add since the first few seasons they’re basically “spies for hire” too.

  8. 1) Warehouse 13
    2) White Collar
    3) Burn Notice
    4) In Plain Sight
    5) My Chuck DVDs
-I used to include Psych on my summer list but this year it’s been moved to the fall schedule.

  9. Agree with Burn Notice, and would suggest Eureka as well. Like Morgan, Fargo also never met a button he didn’t push.

  10. You forgot Breaking Bad.

As per Morgan Grimes, “The perfect kind of programming”

  11. Agreed!! I love Breaking Bad, its been gone waaaaaaay too long!! I also love In Plain Sight!

  12. Don’t forget burn notice! Gotta love that show too!

  13. Forget live TV – have a mini flashback and go for the DVDs of Alias and Lois&Clark 🙂

    • An Alias rewatch is a very good idea. So, here now are my viewing plans:

      1. Baseball
      2. Burn Notice
      3. Baseball
      4. Alias rewatch
      5. Baseball

    • I agree with you on the Dvd’s but my 5 choices other then Chuck Dvd’s of course are:

      1.Get Smart
      2.The Wild Wild West
      3.Lost(Netflixs)
      4.Newhart
      5.Something else on Netfix(Undesided)

  14. I like Burn Notice and Leverage!~~

  15. 1. Dr Who
    2. Firefly [on DVD/Blue Ray or SyFy]
    3. Sanctuary
    4. Camelot
    5. Game of Thrones
    6. Warehouse 13

  16. to Mel, thanx for including Leverage.. big fan of the show..

  17. ultimatechucklover

Nobody mention PSYCH the second funniest show in the world!!!! 😀

  18. Or you can take my approach:
    Hibernate until September.
Naaw, I kid, I just watch old episodes of Chuck. Mondays are boring without Chuck. How will I survive?

  19. If your talking DVD and old series..check out the Original and FAR superior spy series La Femme Nikita

(not the lame, kinder, gentler, younger audience version they have on CW now)
    with Shane”I can’t act” West

  20. everyone should check out royal pains its my favorite summer show

  21. 1. Royal Pains
    2. Covert Affairs
    3. Warehoulse 13
    4. In Plain Sight
    5. The closer (only for my wife)

  22. HBO shows:
    1 – Game of thrones
    2 – True Blood

    rewatch Chuck old seasons 1 – 3.

    Watch Sanctuary, it’s so cool

    • I caught up on GoT over the weekend after finding the first episode borderline misogynistic. Mo Ryan assured me that things changed as the series progressed, so over the long weekend I gave it another try and WOW! was she right! I’m hooked now.

  23. Yes, yes, yes on “Burn Notice”! Michael Westen Rules! Also, are any of you checking out “Justified” on FX? This is one of the best written shows on TV. Who am I kidding, who cares about the writing? Timothy Olyphant is to die for! And one more, drum roll please….my guilty pleasure show is “Hawaii Five-O”. Aloha!

    • Mmmmm, Alex O’Loughlin! I’ve interviewed him a few times, and met him once. There was a hug involved. He smelled delicious. 🙂
