Chuck Versus The Third Season
Or
Hanging On By A Thread, er Tie?
Short term pain for long term gain.
That is the dilemma that is facing the Chuck TV series. When Chuck should return with new episodes is a topic of much discussion amongst fans. Should the show be returned to the air as soon as possible? Would you feel the same knowing that such a course could very well spell the end of the series? Or would you be willing to wait until March if the chances for a fourth season improved?
Chuck faces its biggest challenge yet; making it past the third season. This is the do or die season for the series. It is rare for a show that is given an extension to survive beyond it. So when Chuck returns it has to be under the best conditions.
A slew of good episodes to hit the ground running is a given. It is also the only thing the show has control over. From all accounts the showrunners realize this. Early word has it that the show is in a great creative groove. Unfortunately everything else is out of the show’s hands. Such is the nature of the TV business.
In Chuck’s two seasons it has never enjoyed an uninterrupted run. The first season was truncated by the writer’s strike. The second season had a network imposed month layoff over the Christmas holiday plus a last minute preemption due to a presidential address. The main impetus to garnering good and consistent ratings would be an uninterrupted season long story arc run. A thirteen episode order with a complete story arc almost guarantees that possibility.
These are two main scenarios in which Chuck could return:
Sceanario 1
- return in March 2010 after the Winter Olympics
- major promotional opportunity
- people will be used to tuning into NBC
- a strong and complete thirteen episode run
Scenario 2
- Coming back in late 2009 or early 2010 in relief of a failed show
- lack of promotion would be a serious blow
- interrupted season due to the Winter Olympics
There also exists the possibility of Chuck becoming a summer show and used to help launch a sister summer show. This scenario could also include an order of an additional episodes to allow Chuck to play out the summer. The drawback with this plan is that if Chuck were to get a fourth season the wait would be until June 2011.
All of these scenarios have their pluses and minuses. For me the best choice is the one where Chuck returns after the Winter Olympics. The promotional opportunity and a tight, complete, thirteen episode season arc are the best combination of making a fourth season a reality. Plus this scenario gives the best shot for Chuck to get the order for the additional episodes. Worth the pain of a longer time between seasons.
If Chuck came back earlier the joy of getting the show back could be a transient one. It could be at the expense of the show’s long term future. The lack of promotion plus another interrupted season could kill any momentum the show builds. That combination could spell the end of the series.
What does everyone think? Do you feel the show could survive and thrive if it came back earlier? Or do you feel that its best chance for long term survival lays in waiting until after the Winter Olympics?
Please post your comments etc here or in the comment section or the ChuckTV forums.
Till next time!

Contrary to your beliefs, Chuck could be Burn Notice, True Blood, Nurse Jackie for NBC.
I have no clue what works best but I am all for whatever prolongs the life of Chuck. I’d like to see it stay on the air as long as Meet The Press or something. Haha.
Lou I think you are as accurate in your statements as anyone could be at this time. There are some tremendous advertising opportunities within the show that have definetly not been used to full advantage–I would hope someone is creative enough to approach the proper potential advertisers. I must admit that I lack discipline when I think of the third season. It is a real love hate relationship within myself that takes away a lot of the enjoyment of the show. I hope the writers do not just repeat seasons one and two with different names. I am unfortunately one of the angst haters and cannot enjoy what I feel is the undeveloped humor and adventure of the show until Sarah and Chuck ‘s love for each other is a given and unchallenged. Love is the number one theme of the show for many viewers and until it is resolved the humor and adventure is dulled by the heartache and pain.
I also would like to see Ellie’s part in the show expanded –I think she could add a lot to Sarah’s part by becoming her best friend—the poor girl has probably never had a best friend and it would be a great way of letting us know what some of Sarah’s thoughts are throughout the series.
Personally, I think that (even though it kills us) it’s best to start the show in March 2010 and continue it throughout the summer. I know it’s easier for me to watch it in the summer, and less competition is definitely better.
I watch True Blood and that’s on Sunday and we never miss it. Whereas I’ve missed probably 3 or 4 episodes of Chuck during the school year because of various activities.
Not to mention, March is my birthday month, so it’d be a nice gift. ;D
I think we should postpone Chuck untill march for the sake of its future. Its not worth it to have Chuck come on earlier and risk season 4 or maybe even 5. In my opinion; they should cancel the winter olympics- ha jk.
You have to bring Chuck back no matter what.
i don’t agree whith you , simply because I don’t know who watches winter olympics, I’m 20 years old and I never watched it , because i don’t really like winter sport only those who live in cold climates like winter sports so I dont’ tink that winter olynpics will steal Chucks raitings. And Chuck also has it’s strong fan base and with a littlt advertising it could get even better raitings than the first season.Because lets be onest everybody thinks the 3rd season vill be better than the last 2
Alex – A LOT of people watch the winter Olympics – though I don’t either (and I’m around your age as well) – and that would be a great opportunity to do some heavy advertising and gain some fans. The Chuck fanbase seems big because of this website where fans congregate – but it’s really not. I didn’t even find out about Chuck until AFTER season 2 ended, and my best friend and brother (who love the show now, after I showed it to them) didn’t either. It’s not one of the well known shows, and the name doesn’t say anything about the show, so whenever people I come across hear it they’re like, “What? What’s that about?”. But there’s so many spy shows – like 24 and Burn Notice, and others – that Chuck doesn’t stand out if you just give basics. The story is still, IMO, very unique and I hope it goes on for as long as the writers have something to give us.
Olympics will not crush Chuck – Chuck must have a new season! My wife and I and our kids love the Series.
My husband and I love Chuck! Last winter, he broke his leg and we bought the first season and LOL.
Chuck must come back! This is an excellent show. My son, wife and I all love the show. Please bring Chuck back!
I think Chuck should be back sooner but if it’f future depends on it being on after the winter Olympics I’m willing to wait because I love Chuck.I have the first season already!
Most people I tell about Chuck, become regular watchers, especially those that are sick to death of all the “reality” & “high drama” rubbish around at the moment. I hope it goes for 10 seasons.
I’m from South Africa and recently just started watching Chuck…(LOL)…I think it’s a great series and u should keep it on…i don’t know much about your winter olympics but what ever u decide…plz just think about the rest of us…
