Chuck Vs The Third Season

Chuck Versus The Third Season

Or

Hanging On By A Thread, er Tie?

Short term pain for long term gain.

That is the dilemma that is facing the Chuck TV series. When Chuck should return with new episodes is a topic of much discussion amongst fans. Should the show be returned to the air as soon as possible? Would you feel the same knowing that such a course could very well spell the end of the series? Or would you be willing to wait until March if the chances for a fourth season improved?

Chuck faces its biggest challenge yet; making it past the third season. This is the do or die season for the series. It is rare for a show that is given an extension to survive beyond it. So when Chuck returns it has to be under the best conditions.

A slew of good episodes to hit the ground running is a given. It is also the only thing the show has control over. From all accounts the showrunners realize this. Early word has it that the show is in a great creative groove. Unfortunately everything else is out of the show’s hands. Such is the nature of the TV business.

In Chuck’s two seasons it has never enjoyed an uninterrupted run. The first season was truncated by the writer’s strike. The second season had a network imposed month layoff over the Christmas holiday plus a last minute preemption due to a presidential address. The main impetus to garnering good and consistent ratings would be an uninterrupted season long story arc run. A thirteen episode order with a complete story arc almost guarantees that possibility.

These are two main scenarios in which Chuck could return:

Hanging by a Thread, er Tie.
"Hanging by a Thread, er Tie."

Sceanario 1

  • return in March 2010 after the Winter Olympics
  • major promotional opportunity
  • people will be used to tuning into NBC
  • a strong and complete thirteen episode run

Scenario 2

  • Coming back in late 2009 or early 2010 in relief of a failed show
  • lack of promotion would be a serious blow
  • interrupted season due to the Winter Olympics

There also exists the possibility of Chuck becoming a summer show and used to help launch a sister summer show. This scenario could also include an order of an additional episodes to allow Chuck to play out the summer. The drawback with this plan is that if Chuck were to get a fourth season the wait would be until June 2011.

All of these scenarios have their pluses and minuses. For me the best choice is the one where Chuck returns after the Winter Olympics. The promotional opportunity and a tight, complete, thirteen episode season arc are the best combination of making a fourth season a reality. Plus this scenario gives the best shot for Chuck to get the order for the additional episodes. Worth the pain of a longer time between seasons.

If Chuck came back earlier the joy of getting the show back could be a transient one.  It could be at the expense of the show’s long term future. The lack of promotion plus another interrupted season could kill any momentum the show builds. That combination could spell the end of the series.

What does everyone think? Do you feel the show could survive and thrive if it came back earlier? Or do you feel that its best chance for long term survival lays in waiting until after the Winter Olympics?

Please post your comments etc here or in the comment section or the ChuckTV forums.

Chuck vs the Goodbye: 10 Years Later

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Chuck series finale. It feels like a decade …

  1. I will wait until March and hope for more shows in the summer. I’ll watch it any time it’s on, but I think it will be best the way it is set up now.

    • i think chuck is the best and funniest show i have seen come out of the states. i hope there are loads more series of chuck to come, i have the 2 series on dvd and can’t wait for series 3 in march. i am eagerly awaiting the new series. i would like to see chuck get together with sarah in the new series

  2. I understand your points. They are all valid.

I still am thinking that the Monday time slot, going against established shows that are in mid season, after having been off the air for 10 months is going to be problematic. And that’s if we trust the network to go balls out on promoting the show during the Olympics, which I am skeptical off.

So, I’m willing to accept almost anything that gets Chuck into a better time slot.

The wild card, IMO, is the back nine. If Chuck could extend into the summer, while the other shows are in rerun, it could possibly establish an audience. Were that true, then waiting until March would be best.

    Nice topic,

  3. I don’t think anyone would mind waiting if it meant a season 4 in the future.
Hopefully the NBC execs will just promote the heck out of it. I think they will – they did a pretty good job of advertising during season two, and because most shows don’t start in March, Chuck will be one of the only shows being advertised at that time. Which, we can hope, means a lot of new fans!

  4. I think waiting until March is the best way to to. If NBC does promote the show during the Olympics the buzz would be great. Chuck is a very unique show and once most people start watching they continue. Fans can only do so much at this point.

  5. i think third season will be last and i’m not so excited about S3 because we will see same things(love triangles, trapezoid).therefore,i won’t be a regular
    viewer in S3

    • Seriously everything I hear about season 3 makes me more and more excited about what is going to happen.

If you’re going to turn away from that because of a comment from a pair of showrunners who have a history of talking total BS just to screw with the C/S shippers then there is no helping you

    • The sooner we get you crybabies out of the fanbase for good, the better for the show. So do us a favor and quit now. Thanks!

  6. If this is true then you guys should come back in March we all the fans can wait we just want what’s best for chuck. If we want it to return for season 4,5,6 we should wait.So CHUCK do the right thing and return in March 2010 and bring more chances of a fourth season then take the risk of never coming back because we all want you guys back.

  7. SO GO WITH Sceanario 1 rather then 2

  8. As much as it pains me, I will wait. Whatever is best for my number one Nerd Herder 🙂 Everyone keep your fingers crossed for a season 4! Go Chuck!

  9. (singing) “If it takes forever, I will wait for you…”

Lou; perceptive as always! I think NBC’s whole ‘experimenting with a new way to do television programming’ will factor into this equation as well. They are obviously using CHUCK as a test case in response to the rapid changes in the manner in which people watch tv; ie- streaming online, tivo, dvr, etc. This is especially true of the demographic group that the show appeals to. This would make it much more likely that we see a debut in March after the olympics and a good possibility for the back nine through the summer. Don’t you think so?

  10. I don’t like the idea of waiting, but you’re right about it being the best situation. I would love it if they could get the back nine order. I see that as difficult at best sine the first 13 will be completed before episode 1 ever airs. I don’t see them bringing the cast back in mid-April to start filming a back 9, so the only hope is NBC likes what they see and orders without rating info.

I’ll follow Chuck whenever it may return, but I’ve always been frustrated by NBC’s scheduling tactics. They did a good job of promoting the show, but they left it on the most competative night in TV. Monday nights in my house were a mess. My wife lives for House. I love Big Bang and 2.5 Men. We both like How I met your Mother. From September through January, Monday night football was a must. All of us loved Chuck. There was no way to watch or DVR everything we wanted to see that night. I usually resorted to Itunes or Hulu to catch up (methods that don’t count for ratings). I think a lot of people were in the same boat. By Wednesday or Thursday, there’s nothing worth watching on. If they’d get Chuck off of Mondays, I bet it would do a whole lot better and we wouldn’t already be sweating season 4.

  11. It’s best for Chuck to come back in March for all the reasons you mentioned. That gives Gaspin plenty of time to figure out how to effectively market the show, what type of promos, etc. The man is a genius when it comes to garnering ratings. By January I’m willing to believe that he’ll have a goal for the NBC brand and be using the Olympics to promote that, for which Chuck will be a part of.

  12. As impatient as I tend to be, I’m willing to wait for the March return – IF NBC promotes the show like they should (and hopefully Subway will have some kind of “thing” in their stores that is “Chuck-related” in the weeks leading up to and after the premiere of S3.

As always, that Monday time slot will be tough. But truthfully, there aren’t many “easy” timeslots. I still think that NBC HAS to realize that they’re not going to garner a huge following for CHUCK in tht Monday time slot. Cant they grow the following enough for at least some increase in the ratings? Will fans keep showing up at Subway on Mondays? Believe me, if Subway sees this deal is making them $$, they won’t be bashful about backing a Season 4.

As far a a “Back 9.” It would be nice, but I’m not sure. Fewer people watch TV during the summer. I would love more episodes of CHUCK – but did I read above that if that scenario takes place, then Chuck Season 4 (if there is one) wouldn’t return until JUNE 2011??? That seems odd. Why wouldn’t it return in Feb/March 2011 and follow the same spring/summer run?

Anway, if the BEST chance of a Season 4 is to have a 13 episode Season 3 without a back nine, then I’ll take that. I would rather have 13 more episodes the following year than 9 more tacked onto this coming season if it makes S4 a greater likelihood.

Whatever happens, keep up all the promo people. Let people know about Chuck. I hope, I hope, I hope that the Season 2 DVDS come out in time to give as Christmas gifts, but I’m hearing either a late December or even a FEbruary release date. I don’t think that’s good. Release it in November – give us time to have a “Chuck Christmas,” where we can give family and friends S1 and S2 together – and get them “hooked” in time for the start of Season 3 in March.

Keep spreading the world. I’ve already had a number of friends/coworkers asking me “When is Chuck coming back?” And these were people who didn’t know anything about Chuck (because they were too busy watching DWTS) until I lent them the Season 1 DVDS. So we CAN make a difference!

Keep on Chuckin’ everybody!!! And here’s to an “AWESOME” Season 3!!

    Peace, all!

  13. I see you point Lou, but I do have a different perspective that could be “the best of both worlds.” If NBC has a Pilot that fails…scratch that, when NBC has a pilot that fails. I assuming if they decided to plug Chuck in for the remainder of the fall they won’t transition it over the course of a week. If the Execs know they are going to pull a “show swap” then they will probably make a campaign to do so. Advertise that Chuck is starting in a couple weeks and throw some muscle behind it. NBC does want Chuck to succeed like we all do. As far as the uninterrupted schedule, all shows take some sort of a break around the holidays, but Chuck was just given a really long one last year (6 weeks I believe) trying to time it with the super bowl. If Chuck can get at least 7 episodes prior to the holidays and then the final 6 of the 13 would lead up to the Olympics. NBC would have to fill the slot the rest of the year, most likely with a back 9 of Chuck. The last episode leading up to the Olympics could be the mid season cliffhanger. Then NBC could put the same promotional bang behind Chuck for its return like they were already planning. My two cents has now been spent.

    • Not only did Chuck have the extended holiday vanishing act and the political pre-empting, but I don’t remember the show even starting on time in the fall. I seem to remember it started a couple weeks late, and was not advertised at all leading into season two.

  14. I hear you JDF9pd. My number one belief for continued seasons of Chuck, an uninterrupted, complete season of Chuck is a must. That is why scenarios like the one you propose do not work for me.

  15. People who faithfully hook at the end of the second season, maybe after 10 months of waiting, he has hooked another series, or simply lost interest in Chuck, and I say I, who have finished viewing it two weeks ago, and I’m impatient.
That returns, and is interrupted one or two months for the Olympic Games, not be a problem, provided that the promotion well, do not forget that other series like Smallville, The OC (the others I see) have some lengthy stoppages, and have fewer chapters, and not lose their appeal. (Although there are other chains and are more rooted in its long trajectory)
All I want is that the season has 22 episodes, which lasted many years.
For example, if you have 22 episodes, does not have to convince the 4 in June, since it is assumed that all 22 episodes would be recording as much in April, having started before the grabaciones.Con in August that could resume recordings like this year, and issued in January by example, not games.
That said, the best news would be that within weeks we knew that the season is extended to 22 episodes, because that would say that like last year’s NBC liked the first thing you were taught, if we stay at 13, personally I think the end of the series this season.
I hope NBC knows he has a great series in hand, and every time we have more audience, I’m tired of silly series, which have much hearing last many years, although of a tiny warm.
Examples thousands, for example in Spain we have several, as Aida …., or USA is sure to have something else.
The important thing is quality, and NBC has Chuck knows that, otherwise people would not have risked so much for its renewal, such as Subway, fans or even criticos.Solo be expected to improve the rating, because in a business all that matters is money and it’s sad.

    Sorry for my english

  16. Oh, and we offer websories, but not just the U.S., we can see them from other countries.
And although we have all the chapters, to show us some spoiler and more pictures from the set of recording, whether or not very important scenes.
That might calm the expecting something.
I just hope that now that the course starts again, there are other series, the fútbol_ (soccer) and others, to move faster over time, although I doubt it.

  17. JDF9pd 100% agree with you

  18. NyronCarmaichel – your impatience could spell the end of Chuck if it comes back the way you want. Is that really worth it? Chuck may never see 22 episodes a season again BTW.

  19. Great points Lou. Promotion will be key whether it airs earlier than announced or after the Olympics. But what are going to be the expectations ? Higher ratings and/or a good but not great steady audience ? Returning to Mondays at the same time will be as before some tough competition. Will quality have anything to do with it, especially being considered a catalyst for summer shows ? Thanks for posting.

  20. bethany actually

I think NBC is realizing that there’s no reason they HAVE to run shows in the traditional fall-through-spring format. Cable networks (SyFy [ugh, I hate spelling it like that!], USA, TNT) have been running their shows in more nontraditional formats (spring-summer shows, shortened seasons, two “mini-seasons” in the same year) with a fair amount of success for several years now. Maybe NBC is finally starting to think outside the box a bit, just trying to find the way to bring their shows the best chance of reaching an audience who’ll appreciate them.

I’m happy to wait till March for Chuck to come back. Lou, I think you’re right about both the big advertising push and the uninterrupted season. They will both only help Chuck out in the long run!

I am loving these analysis posts of yours. I hope you keep it up! 🙂

  21. I just read that Chuck is BACK Sept 29th. With 22 episodes. GOOOOOOO CHUCK!!!!

  22. The_Mikster, I am sorry to have to tell you that the September 29th start date was for last year, not this year. The related articles are from last year. Bummer.

I am all about waiting, if it will help get a season four.

  23. Everyone wants it asap but…. the wait will make it that much better (and successful).

  24. Great topic! I lean towards a March return as much as I would like to see it back sooner. The Monday night slot in the fall is a killer. DWTS is a juggernaut along with MNF and other competition. In March if NBC does it’s job and promotes the heck out of Chuck during the Olympics and we get an uninterrupted run, I like our chances. DWTS and MNF are over and hopefully we get a bump from Olympic viewers, heck get the cast up to Vancouver to do some live promos and maybe even Jeffster…If Subway also is an Olympic sponsor then you have a golden crossover marketing opportunity with Chuck/Subway & Olympics.

In my view the key to building momentum is consistency, The long break and interruptions last year during January and Presidential speeches were killers for momentum especially after the strong Christmas episode cliffhanger. I think this is as important as timing. Ultimately I am just not convinced that Monday is the best night but we shall see.

Finally, one marketing mistake I believe they are making during this long hiatus is the recent news about delaying the Season 2 DVD release until Feb/March ’10!!!! I think releasing the set in time for the holiday sales season and as a vehicle to generate some visibility and buzz again about Chuck would be very wise and it seems a big opportunity wasted by the powers to be. I am baffled by this news… What does everyone else think about this?

  25. I think everyone, including me, wants Chuck to return as soon as possible. Still, if this makes it harder for the show to come back for a 4th season or even be interrupted by the Olympics (or anything else), then I think that we have to be a little patient… It’s really worthy waiting!!! isn’t it???

  26. Yes it is Emily.

  27. rickfromillinois

If they wait until March I think that there is also a better chance that after seeing the first 4 or 5 episodes NBC will decide to order the back 9 so that Chuck runs through that summer. Even if that doesn’t happen the points that OD has brought up makes it seem that the chances for a fourth season of Chuck is much greater if they delay airing the show until March.

  29. The best chance for series survival is to wait until March, promote it heavily
during and immediately after the Winter Olympics, continue to increase the
viewer base while waiting, coordinate with Subway to get maximum marketing
impact, have NBC order the backnine now if they are serious about a summer season, release the season 2 dvd for Christmas sales as a lead in for the
March return, hit the NBC website heavily during season 3 to watch episodes,
and if necessary reorganize the lobbying campaign for a 4th season as was done earlier this year for a season 3 renewal. That’s really all about that
can be done on this end.

The rest of it is really beyond anybody’s control except for the Gaspin and
Co. at NBC. Much will depend on the fall schedule and whether it succeeds or
fails. Let’s hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

    Comments are invited, thanks.

    • Ha, you about covered it all Robert!

Bottom line is that an early release due to some failed program in the fall will not be advertised at all so our best hope is the Olympic promotion.

  30. 3 Chuck Characters among the best TV Characters of the decade
According to poll results on Zap2it.com
Best Sister: Ellie Bartowski (like we didn’t already know that)
Best Spy/Secret Agent: Sarah Walker (goes in the Duh files)
Best Superhuman: Chuck Bartowski (he even beat Superman/Clark Kent)
and for all you Casey fans, Adam Baldwin just narrowly lost out as Best Anti Hero for his role in Firefly.

    Now for the question.
While I am going crazy waiting for S3 to start, I am willing to sacrifice my sanity if it gives Chuck a better shot at S4. After all many people say I lost my sanity years ago anyways.
I sure would love to see a S3 trailer and some webisodes while I’m waiting though. Just please make them available to foreign fans. I have noticed a lot of the video clips (minus S2 episodes) are accessible on chuckmeout.com, which is a big help. The Chuck S1 DVDs, websites, podcasts and videoclips are sort of acting as methadone in treating my Chuck addiction. Thanks to all those hardworking Chuck fans that are keeping Chuck alive in the off season.

  31. Why your erased my post?
But I do not have a say?
Because only did that, give my opinion … maybe it is not wanted to hear

  32. sorry, I’m wrong forum, my last message was not for here.

  33. Lou W. Sytsma or waiting could mean goodbye.
I do not think that because back before, is a reason to end the series, or because there stoppages, as I said, others have and do not suffer.
But if you read what I put, I said that I hate to return in March, but if he does will be fine.
What is clear, that if you suddenly do not like last year and are an extension of 22 episodes, the series would be dead.
The renewal means that they like what ven.Y repeat, the chapters and would be recording in April, which would not have to wait a year, that all he does is put off to see something

  34. Gord, that’s what I say, OK in March, but before you eat the cake, give us at least a few crumbs of bread …
Spoilers or photos, even if they have to do with what is important, websories ……..
    So time will pass faster.
And obviously, that for everyone, many people outside the U.S., which loves the series.
But I still say the same if not extended to 22 episodes, I think that the serie is dead.I hope that not, and will last many years, even if we see Chuck and Sarah and married, but being spies, and combining his living from their work, for example, who cares if the girls have to work …..
What I mean is that it is the best series I’ve ever seen, the best actors, and want to see the series for many years.

    • It would be nice to think ahead at the Chuck and Sarah being married.
I recently found out about Chuck and i watched the entire 1 and 2 seasons in just 3 days, now i’m starting all over again.
I heard some rumors saying that it would be some romantic attractions for both Chuck and Sarah. That it’s not very good. I remember the episodes with the MI6 spy who fell for Sarah and how sad was Chuck. That could not happen again, Sarah it’s much stronger and she not been affected by the girlfriends of Chuck ( Lou or Jill ) but Chuck is more gentile and he took badly Sarah’s relationships. I think that the story should go around their relationship.
Anyway, it’s not that bad that we have to wait until march 2010 but it’s not a good news also. The first season had 13 episodes and lasted from september to january, the second season had 22 episodes from september to april. Now they change the time slot and we will start in march to june with 13 episodes and maybe another 9 in july to september. Then we have to wait to june 2011 for another season and another time slot? That’s not good.
I think that the 3rd season is the last for Chuck and Sarah. However i will be here to help the fight for a 4th season. After Eli Stone was cancelled, Chuck is the only show i’m watching.
      Flo from Romania.

      • sarsar: Glad to hear you are a new fan to the show! How did you learn about it?

Don’t believe every rumor you hear. The plot for Season Three is shaping up to be pretty straight forward. The love triangles seem to involve Morgan, not Charah. Sarah will be stalked by Chuck and his crazy intersect 2.0 if she goes anywhere near anybody else, which is why Josh stated very clearly that Charah will reach a much deeper level of relationship.

  35. Let’s all just wait and see If it deserves a fourth season…
I hope that the writing will resemble Season 1 quality and not the post-Santa Claus dribble…
If the S&F bullshit will remain as is, meaning fictitious comments designed to throw fans into anger and frustration(for what reason, only god know…) and the show itself will be fused with the writers talent instead of the Bobs direction , then we can think about the merits of a tighter 13 episodes season
instead of an artificially elongated one…(for proper disclosure, I have to say
that I don’t believe in a concept of tighter season…IMO 22 always beats 13, with the same opening conditions of course)I think that starting in March, will be the best option only if it will be added with the back 9, and if it will…there is no reason for season 4 to start in the next summer…it could just as well start again in mid-season 2011.
    that’s all folks.

  36. My fear is that DVD’s & DVRs have changed the game in that there’s a whole audience that’s content just to wait for disks rather than watching live. Regardless of Fall or spring release NBC has to step-up new marketing ideas that promote watching programing on original air dates. How? Maybe bonus video clips, contests, & behind-the-scenes stuff. Actually, I’d look at everything BSG did online and try to integrate that into broadcasts and then NOT put them on DVDs or online.

Fall, Winter, Spring aren’t going to matter as much as getting people watching and talking.

  37. $5.00 footlong, anyone?

Robert H got it in a nutshell. Thanks Lou for opening up this whole thread. It’s been fun followin the debate. Good arguments all. Bring on S3…whenever.

  38. You know, when I first heard that Chuck was scheduled to return ‘after’ the Olympics, I had a little panic attack (…okay, so maybe it wasn’t so little…), but now that I’ve had time to get the anxiety out of my system, I ‘know’ I’m going to love the show just as much then as I do now. I can wait. It’s like Christmas—half the joy comes from the anticipation of something wonderful. And Chuck is wonderful. Trust me. I think the dry (Chuck) spell this Fall will give the writers more time to put everything together.

May their creative juices continue to flow for eternity.

    Viva la Chuck. 😉

  39. wow i never though ot if that way!
i mena i have been excited at the possibility of a possible summer run in that it hadnt even occured to me that it would transform chuck into a “summer show”
i have been thinking lately that chuck is going to need a steady consistency if they hope for a 4th season.
i mena we all know that the 3rd season was mostly because of fans crazyness about not cancelling it so im doubting that NBC will save it again…
im just hopeing that they do their best and that if thye do have to leave after 3 that they go out with a bang!!
    reeealy hope not though..

  40. I’m willing to wait until March if it increases our chances for a fourth season. As much as I desperately need more Chuck, I also want the series to have a good, long solid run and the thirteen episode arc seems like the best way to do that and draw in more fans. So, I’m for March!

  41. There’s one thing that I feel is really being overlooked here.

All the momentum and all the word of mouth and all the awareness that the renewal campaign engendered is likely to be all but forgotten come March. Also, television viewing likely drops off around that time as the temperatures start to rise, schools are closer to summer, etc… The time when eyeballs are most likely to hit the televisions is inevitably at the beginning of fall season. (Admittedly, there’s more competition during this period as well. As others have pointed out, a different night or time slot would have been a huge help.)

Personally, I would have preferred they “ride the wave” and start the new season with a bang at the beginning of Sept. Then if there was a “back nine,” they could have brought THAT in either after the Olympics OR during the summer as a “summer season” of Chuck. I’m afraid that by starting so late, Chuck is going to appear to be an “afterthought” on the NBC schedule, and that vibe will translate into people simply not feeling compelled to tune in.

I also think you’re giving too much credit to NBC and their ability to properly promote the show. If this is how they’re going to do it, than they need to promote it as more than just a new season of Chuck, but almost more like an “event,” or a 13 week mini-series. I also think they need to promote the show to appear to be less “disposable” as entertainment- meaning less focus on the comedic, more focus on the the drama of Chuck and Sarah’s relationship and more focus on the action/thriller aspects of the show. Promote the arcs themselves, in terms of the relationships and the spy stuff.

I’m not saying they should change the SHOW, mind you. I love the show as is. We all do. Comedy included. I just think they should approach the *advertising* this way to reel people in more and get them hooked. When people see the comedy to it while they’re watching, that will just be a bonus. Think of the types of trailers you see for action movies… increasing action, tension, drama, fast-cuts, then– boom! “coming to theatres whenever” and then, a quick final clip with a joke or wise-crack. That’s the kind of promotional advertising they need.

I do think there’s hope of seeing Chuck sooner than planned. Nobody really knows how well Leno’s new show is going to do (I’m not a fan), and there’s always the possibility of other shows crashing and burning. This would leave Chuck with a way in just *after* the initial fall-season fallout and after all the new shows have already had their moments in the sun. This way Chuck could hit the ground running without the simultaneous competition of all the other new shows, and with enough time to promote it and really make it stand out– as opposed to SO much time that the common folk out there have forgotten what the heck this show IS, which is the situation we find ourselves in right now.

I’m afraid that as much as we all might wish otherwise, should the show bow in March, it will be for it’s final season. Even if that should be the case, I think we all know that we’re lucky to have a third season at all. So the way I see it, even if we lose, we win.

(P.S. I wrote this quite late without time to fully edit, so I apologize if it could be more coherent!)

  42. i have no problem with early premiere or long hiatus because i’m not excited about S3.angst stuffs(love trapezoid) become too annoying and i won’t join save chuck campaigns this time

  43. Everyone who is involved in the fan and media movement around the show seems to think that a solid Olympics promotion is the best way to make something out of a difficult situation. Having an obscure show on a last place network in the worst possible time slot is tough, so we sort of need to go with the most logic option for success. It seems that the Olympics promotion is our ticket to success, and NBC may just stick with this plan hopefully if we give them positive feedback about running the show into the summer. That would get us our plus nine.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. We probably should really support the Olympic launch at this point because it is the most logical option for the survival of the show.

For those ‘shippers’ who keep finding reasons to dislike the show, there is literally a mountain of spoilers that have been dropped to this point, all of which look very fun and very positive. There is even a chance at a Charah marriage, some fans/psuedo-insiders consider it a likely outcome and some ‘shippers’ swear it could not possibly be true. However, the one thing we have not seen yet is any evidence at all that Charah will be interfered with by a love triangle. So to worry endlessly and complain incessentally about something that has no basis in reality seems really lame at this point. If you don’t like the show, than find a show you like. Josh has admitted that they could have done a better job at handling the angst last year, and that they have learned that they cannot keep going back to seperating Charah through contrived reasons. Intersect 2.0 is a genius idea because that is an easy way to keep them apart at first but get them together later on so Chuck doesn’t flip out.

  44. dave: this week had the season 1 premiere on tv in romania, i saw an promo and it got me. but when the season 3 comes out i think i will watch it online.
last month it started Heroes and in a week i watched all the episodes online.

i was watching the comic con videos and i saw that is nothing with Zach and Yvonne, he don’t even looks at her. i read that he’s datng Caitlin Crosby now and i can’t understand why, Rachael Taylor was much nicer. maybe he should date Yvonne. 😉

  45. First, I think the show returning in March is golden. Look at the buzz (Twitter #chuckmemondays, #checkmeout, etc) that has been building since Season 2 end. Secondly, Season 2 was a 13+9 where the 9 was picked up after the NBC execs saw the first few episodes before the first episode ever aired. Hanging on the comments from the recent NBC media event about the creative quality of the show I would assume it will get the +9 shortly after the execs see the episodes they are shooting now. I am also hopeful the growing buzz will result in 10M+ viewers early in March and thus a Season 4 announcement not long after.

But who am I? Just a devoted fan who isn’t a Neilsen family so who cares what I think, right?

  46. I’m so glad I’m not a ‘shipper and watch Chuck for Chuck and not Charah. Why? Because I read in EW that a role was cast for Brandon Routh as a spy mentor for Chuck and a possible love interest for Sarah. “The course of true love never did run smooth”… or something like that.
Does anyone know if the Chuck cast will be in NYC for the East Coast Comic-con in October? That might be a good promotion for the show if it starts in November as Schwartz hinted in SDCC. But I can wait till March if that’s better for the show. I’ll just keep watching those last 3 episodes over and over and over.

  47. Spoiler Alert!!!!!!!!

At EW.com, Michael Ausiello is reporting that Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) has been cast as a spy named Shaw for several episodes in Season 3. According to Ausiello, he’ll be placed in charge of Team Bartowski and will be a mentor to Chuck and competing love interest for Sarah.

By the way, as for when Season 3 will really launch, I believe that if atleast two of NBC’s new dramas bomb and are cancelled, the execs at NBC will bring Chuck back early. I predict a late October launch.

    • As for the spoiler, we will just have to wait and see. It sounds a bit like a rehash of the Cole Barker episodes, but I hope not.

With respect to a late October Launch –
If they do decide on an early start, I would like to see them run a weekend Chuckathon.
With some of the best episodes of S1 and S2 – starting with the Chuck pilot and ending of course with the Final 4 from S2 – Dream Job, First Kill, Colonel and Ring.
If not that, then at least run a 2 hour premiere night and start with the Ring before running S3 premiere.
Also in conjunction have Zac and/or Yvonne host SNL with Jeffster as musical guest the Saturday before the show starts.

  48. I was just over at EW.com reading the spoiler and comments. It is quite interesting the contrast between what the majority of Chuck fans are saying here and the Chuck fans leaving comments at EW.com.
They all want Chuck on in the fall.

I know if I was speaking from my heart, I would have to agree and if they do indeed replace one of their drama’s that tanks, I know I will enjoy seeing Chuck earlier. However, as pointed out, having Chuck start in March and run into the summer with back 9 may improve the odds on a S4.
However the scheduling works out, I know I will be there to watch Chuck, and do my best to get others to watch as well.

  49. Yvonne Strahosvki on Ausiello TV: romance, heartbreak, jealousy…
Romance is good but the heartbreak and the jealousy stuff it’s not good.
    Another heartbreak for Chuck?
I mean Chuck has kissed Sarah only 2 times in 35 episodes, the MI6 guy and Bryce kissed Sarah more than Chuck. I thought that the season 3 will be about them and their feelings after all, in the last episode of the season we see Sarah who tells Bryce that she’s not coming with him.
My favorites moments: in episode Chuck vs. the Colonel when they kiss in that motel, in episode Chuck vs. the Ring when Sarah tells Chuck that he is that man and when she signals Bryce that she’s not coming with him.
    What can i say, i’m a Charah. 😀

  50. I think the people who want Chuck on the Fall are not seeing the big picture. The March date is THE BEST for Chuck. For all the reasons that have already been listed.

I hope that NBC’s new showrunner Jeff Gaspin will go with the March scenario, and put Chuck’s back 9 into the summer to really give it a chance to build its audience base. I’m really hopeful as Gaspin seems to be a strategy mastermind, and after long-term success instead of money now.

Does anybody know what shows could come in to replace the failed ones btw? Maybe NBC should start ordering made for tV movies, or reality shows. Just don’t touch Chuck’s March run!
