Oregon Man Changes Name to “Captain Awesome”

And you thought YOU were a big Chuck fan! The Register-Guard reports that a 27-year-old native Oregonian has legally changed his name to Captain Awesome, in honor of the Chuck character played by Ryan McPartlin. The former Douglas Allen Smith, Jr. had to jump through some hoops to get his name legally changed, but after a judge was satisfied that he was serious, it was approved.

“I just thought it was really funny that Devon’s father always called him Captain Awesome because ‘a poor nickname builds good character,’ ” said Awesome.

Awesome also changed his signature to a right-pointing arrow, smiley face, and left-pointing arrow.

  1. Eeehhhmmm is it April already? LOL

  2. Alright… that should bring even more attention to our favourite show Chuck! If more people change their names to Chuck B or Sarah Walker that might definately arise even more the interest 😀

  3. LOL!! Kudos on the effort, Mr Awesome nee Smith! LOL!

    I loved this bit:

“But Mitchell simply made him raise his right hand, swear that he wasn’t changing his name for fraudulent reasons, and proclaimed him Captain Awesome.”

  4. Has anybody checked lately the current frequency of “Charles” and “Sarah” and maybe even “John” as baby names? That would be an interesting item. ->;-)<-

  5. Bet his mother and father loved that—they must be proud!!

  6. uhh… he has it wrong- Mr. Woodcombe never said that about “Captain Awesome,” he said it of himself, and his nickname “Woody”

Puh-Leeze, if you’re gonna change your name to Captain Awesome, at least know your Chuck! Haha sorry to be so specific but that was bothering me!

    • I thought of the same thing! It’s Chuck and Morgan who nicknamed him Captain Awesome. Lol.

    • Finally I found a comment on this story where somebody mentioned this. Even though I think this is …. outstanding, I couldn’t get over how he said that Woody came up with it and not Chuck. You’re right r66, Woody was talking about his own stupid nickname.

  7. “Awesome also changed his signature to a right-pointing arrow, smiley face, and left-pointing arrow”. Seriously? Who does that?

    • He reminds me of the “Mr. Nipple” sketch on A Bit of Fry and Laurie. (Which is on YouTube if you’d care to take a gander. :P)

  8. This is a WIN!!!!

  9. That’s….. awesome

  10. That’s, um…..unusual?…I mean I bow to no-one in my love for the show, but I have a life, a job, family. How can someone inflict that kind of peculiarity on those around him? Some non-conformities make me cheer, some make me chuckle, some make me squirm uncomfortably.

  11. I think that the eagerly grinning picture of the new Mr. Awesome and his…signature is what really pushes the article into “comedy gold” territory.

  12. The story made it to CNN too: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2010/12/07/nr.captain.awesome.cnn?hpt=T2

  13. This whole name thing just got me thinking last night about my real name which actually is sarah-moragne (it’s french so u don’t prononce the e at the end), never made the connection to the show before this article!!! lol!!!!
I guess this means I was destined to be a fan of the show…

  14. I’m the guy that changed my name to Captain Awesome..

So.. Where do I start ?
receptionitis66 – I was misquoted, I said that Devon’s dad says a bad nickname builds good character, I didn’t say anything relating Woody & the “Awesome” moniker that Chuck & Morgan give him..

A lot of people are jumping to the conclusion that I’m a narcissistic attention whore for choosing the name Captain Awesome. I’ve never proclaimed that I’m better than anyone else & that was never a determining factor in going through with this. I’ve been getting ripped by the masses online so I thought that I would reach out to you personally to let you know the facts of the story. I sure had no idea that this would get the attention that is has. The thing about me is that I’m probably one of the most laid back mild mannered guy you’ll ever meet & don’t really feel any pressures to live up to the name at all & that is the truly awesome part of Ryan McPartlin’s character & the main inspiration for the name change. I’m truly a fan of Chuck & it is the inspiration behind the name itself but not the reason at all why I changed my name..

It was never my intentions to have this spread like wildfire & I laughed at my friends when they said it would blow up on me. I honestly never thought it would come to what it has in the week.. When I was first contacted by my local newspaper I genuinely thought that they just needed a filler story for their back pages on a slow news week. If I can use attention in anyway possible to make this world a better place I’m not opposed to that idea & would like to hear any feedback the fans might have on how to do so..

    Sorry if I’m blabbering..
I just wanted the die hard fans to know the facts..
I’ve only told my story to 3-4 sources & the piranhas have been twisting it in the media..
I’ll gladly field any questions/comments/concerns or whatnot anyone might have about this..

    Thanks everyone,

    Captain Awesome
