Review: Chuck versus the Gobbler

“I love a good suicide mission.”

I’ve written elsewhere about how little I like the proleptic cold open* in which we see the inexplicable—Dark Sarah beating up Casey!—and then rewind to find out how on God’s green and verdant earth such a thing could have happened. It’s a device designed to ratchet up the tension, which often means that the plot, in chronological order, wouldn’t be too scintillating without some narrative trickery. And, indeed, this week’s entry felt blah, and I didn’t laugh once.

I know that Chuck isn’t about deftly plotted spy games—it’s not a John Le Carré novel, and I don’t expect it to be. So I won’t address the questions of how Sarah managed to pull off enough wacky Euro-heists to make her way to Volkoff in just a couple of days, or how in the two days the show gave her, she managed to fly from LA to Moscow and back approximately three bazillion times without looking remotely dehydrated or sniffly.

But I will mention the illogic of Volkoff having a network of information called Hydra that exists in only one place, a fake eyeball hidden inside an imprisoned cannibal. This network is vital to his organization, but he has been without it since the Gobbler was imprisoned, and does not seem to have told his “right hand” Mama B about it until just now.

I will also mention the illogic of Sarah needing Chuck, Morgan, and Casey to help her with the Great Gobbler Escape. We know from past episodes that there are, in fact, many other CIA agents out there—why not use some of them? The miniscule staging of most of this episode has me worried: it was something I started noticing in the middle of Season Three of Heroes, in which it seemed like the heroes were the only people in the world, often without even extras in the background to add depth. I started to feel like it showed some desperation on the part of the writers, that they were unwilling to develop plots logically for fear that logic would take our attention away from the awesome centrality of our characters to the continued existence of the universe.

But most of all, I will mention the emotional illogic. Sarah has a history of running from commitment—we know that. But Chuck doesn’t mind that, at a vital moment in their relationship, she chose to accept a mission that her predecessor (Mama B) has been working on for about 20 years. Such an emotionally nuanced and long-simmering problem is simply not on the table. Instead, this episode hands us a new emotional tension on a platter: will Sarah go dark? That’s not a real risk, though, which is why the proleptic opening didn’t create actual tension. It just asserted it.

The structure of many Chuck episodes can be explained in terms of Chuck’s kung fu flashes: whenever he’s about to fight, he has to re-access his kung-fu knowledge bank. He doesn’t really carry that information around and accessible (the way I have my address memorized); he has to look it up every time (the way I can’t ever remember my mother’s address). On a larger scale, each episode of this season has to re-access the emotional drama by creating a new “problem” for the characters to overcome. Because most of these problems are solvable in 45 minutes (although this one might take another episode), they don’t feel real or lasting or important. They feel fluffy, like perpetual deferment.

There was some good in this episode, though: I thought the Grönka thing was rather funny, although it might have gone on too long. I absolutely love Timothy Dalton vamping his way through his evil, evil, evil role, and even thought the arbitrary accent switching added some nice color.

Most of all, though, I’m touched by Casey’s sacrifice. He’s not the type to tell someone he loves them. He’s the type to build shelves of love, and I hope his daughter understands that. I also really, really hope that Casey is okay. Many people have been alluding to 4.13 (the next episode) as something hugely important, but I’ve worked pretty hard to remain unspoiled. If he dies I’ll be horribly sad.

I haven’t lost all of my faith in Chuck. But it’s not the highlight of my week. It’s not even the highlight of my Monday.

Bytes:

• Chuck: “The CIA developed a tonal language for us that only we can understand….Right now, [Sarah] is saying she loves me. Or, she’s planning on buying a Buick. I can’t tell. It’s a very confusing language.”

• Mama B: “There’s one square meter of land in this entire compound that isn’t under surveillance.”

• Morgan: “Wow, Sarah, you look evocative.”

And Pieces:

• Volkoff painting a puppy. Aww.

• I think Sarah has lost weight. She’s lovely either way, of course, but I liked her better with a few more curves.

• The Armenian serial killer joke might not have been funny to the rest of America, but in the context of Burbank’s large Armenian population, it’s actually quite appropriate.

Thank you all for your patience with this review. I got the flu this week, and whenever I sat down to start writing I wound up falling asleep and having terrible fever dreams. Away, flaming elephant, away with you!

Last week, you all had some really great comments (all of which were so nice, too—thank you!). I look forward to hearing more from the best reviewers—the chucktv.net community—out there. I’ll also let you rate this one:

How many Grönkas out of four?

*I really don’t think it’s in media res, but I understand that I am likely alone in this opinion.

Chuck vs the Goodbye: 10 Years Later

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Chuck series finale. It feels like a decade …

  1. Sees as though you and everyone else liked the baby naming portion of the episode.

I must be the only person that didn’t like it. I thought it was rather dumb and way, way too drawn out.

  2. The show has jumped the shark and i’m not sure there’s any bringing it back. Sarah used to worry that Chuck would no longer be the guy she fell in love with if he became a spy. Well she was right and wrong: he’s no longer the same Chuck, but its because he’s turned into a total wuss. He’s neither nerd herder or spy. At least when he was running the nerd herd he exuded confidence, albeit self deprecating confidence. That was his grounding. Now he’s no longer the nerd herder, but he’s hardly a spy either. Instead of stepping up his game he seems to be spending more time sniveling and worrying, and take his cues from Morgan.

And with the exception of Phase 3, Sarah is melting into a teary eyed girl, instead of the tough “we’re gonna get this done” way that impressed John Casey and still allowed her to love Chuck. If Katrina came back and saw the fearful mess Sarah has become, she’d laugh. And she’d be right to do so.

I hope they can save this show, but if it keeps up like this, I will be the first one to say end this now and don’t put us through the misery of a season five. Leave us to enjoy how great seasons 1-3 were and call it a day.

    • Okay, I’m getting very tired of those who say end the show just because THEY don’t enjoy it anymore. My challenge to them is if you don’t like it, stop watching it. There are still a lot of fans out there who enjoy Chuck, and, yes, love where Season 4 is going.

Sorry if I’m coming on a bit strong, but after all, this is supposed to be a site for Chuck fans, and lately it’s become too much of a gripe site for my tastes.

      • Chuck's hardcore fan

I totally agreed with you. In any tv series, movies, its normal to have some like the show and some against it. And also in any tv series there are ups and down in one or more episodes. For me, i like this season 4 which is much2 better than season 3. Thumbs up for chuck.

    • I’ve personaaly been enjoying season 4. I struggled through the first half of season 3 but season 4 has been pretty entertaining. I have to divorce myself from how things are in the real world but Chuck was never meant to be realistic. It was meant to be a fun entertaining show, which it still is. The only thing I really haven’t liked about Season 4 was the Mama B 20 years undercover plot. If she can’t finish a mission in 20 years she’s a pretty terrible spy. After a year or two put a bullet in Volkoff’s head and move on.

      • you are talking really stupidly. Do you know that if she just kills there will be somebody to replace him. This is a whole organization here not just Volkoff . It is called Volkoff industries for a reason it is made up of a lot of people. So if she would just kill Volkoff she will have the whole industry coming after her. She has to get rid of the whole organization. So you should really think before you write.

  3. First of all, like all of us…I love CHUCK, and I appreciate everything this fansite does to support the show and our obsessive behaviors as it relates to it. I like most of us out there, have a busy life. I look forward to Monday’s as my 1 hour in the week where I get to be entertained and absorbed in the Chuck-verse.

I personally don’t expect more than that from this show. While some episodes are better than others, I still find good things to enjoy about each one. There were plenty of funny lines, and while the timelines were admittedly off…it’s not something I get hung up on.

The tone of the reviews for this episode were clearly less than positive…so be it…that’s an opinion that I can respect even if I don’t fully agree. It won’t deter my love for this show, its characters, the actors and writers.

I hope it doesn’t to other CHUCKSTER’s too!

    • You’ve expressed very well how I feel, and for me Chuck is still very much the highlight of my week. I understand that a lot of fans don’t like episodes that end with downers, and they’re entitled to express their dissatisfaction with this flaw or or that plot hole. But I think it’s going way too far when I read that some fans just want Chuck to end altogether. Thanks for your positive post.

      • Agree. I used to like this site but I start to be tired of the negative mood lately. I still find Chuck very entertaining but Chuck is different each season and you don’t get the same feeling because things are moving and changing. The characters have grown and matured. I find it very realistic and interesting ( from the characters perspective). I don’t mind the timeline and the plotholes too much because I still get plenty of fun and sweet moments.I am thankful we still have Chuck in the air.

  4. One thing I learned long ago–you can’t please everybody. Personally, I love the show. Granted…some episodes are better than others. For starters, remember that because of the network giving the green light for season 4 late, the majority of the writers moved on. Considering that season 4 just about started over from that perspective, the stories have been good.
New blood is a good thing. The original writers laid the groundwork for the new ones. For the most part, guest stars have been great (except Brandon R.).I don’t believe Chuck has “jumped the shark.” The latter part of last season was great. I believe it’ll be the same this season. Just wish the network wouldn’t always make it a “bubble” show.

  5. The in medias res device was a novelty for “Chuck”. It’s precisely because they don’t overuse it that I’m willing to tolerate it. It has been an accepted literary device since antiquity. TV shows in the 70’s and 80’s used them all the time, where you’d see a action scene excerpted from the episode and then the opening credits, as something of an advertisement to whet our appetites. What “Chuck” does tend to overuse are (occasionally misdated) expository flashback scenes, so I didn’t mind seeing something a bit different here.

  6. Josie, Sarah didnt make her way into Volkoff in a couple of days. Casey states at the beginning of the episode that shes been undercover for a couple of weeks doing missions to get Volkoff to notice her. I dont want to sound like a douche, but it frustrates me when reviewers do not understand whats going on half of the time

    • Sooooo true. Besides, if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all right? I don’t like bad reviews in general

    • Actually I believe it was several weeks. That mistatement at the beginning of the review throws off your review even if you make some good points.I hope and pray you are feeling better Josie.

    • It amuses me how many people wanted to see a couple of episodes of Sarah establishing her cover as a rogue agent. (Y’know, ’cause if there’s anything this season needed more of, it’s episodes where Sarah runs around kicking butt while Chuck sits helplessly on his ass. ;))

  7. Everyone needs to shut it! Everyone is ripping on our recent Chuck episodes and it’s bull crap! We got a season 4 and no one even seems greatful. We have Chuck episodes shouldn’t that be enough? You have all gotten so picky and you rip on every episode! I can’t believe you have all lost faith in this show. Every Monday you should just be greatful Chuck is still on! Because obviously it’s fans are beginning to lose faith. Maybe Chuck doesn’t deserve a season 5 if you guys just don’t even like watching anymore! I personally love this show. I love my Monday nights and no matter how great or not so great the episode is I love it just because it’s Chuck!!!
    Charah forever…long live chuck!!

    • Right on! Perfectly said, I feel the same way. : )

    • I agree with you on that incredibly huge point: we have a season 4. And for that I am very satisfied. Happy or not with recent episodes, what would we be thinking if there was no season 4?

  8. Thank you to the fans who don’t complain about every little thing. I get that everyone’s tastes are different, and your personal opinion may cause you to not like an episode. But some people, instead of just saying they didn’t like something and moving on, pick on everything and WON’T LET UP! What makes this worse is that they accuse the show of “jumping the shark” and think their opinion is the only one that matters, and that every other fan feels the exact same way. They accuse the show of being too cheesy or unrealistic, but those qualities were there in the first two seasons, and no one seems to mind those. I heard someone complain that the writers don’t remember what Chuck likes to eat when he’s depressed. Who cares? He doesn’t drink whiskey every single time either. I love season 4, but my problem isn’t that other people don’t. It’s the people who still call themselves “fans” because it seems they don’t understand what that word means. I’ve stopped going to fanboards and am tired of all the negativity. I’m going to enjoy every second of the next episode. I hope everyone else does too, keeping in mind that IT’S A TV SHOW, and a great one at that.

  9. I’ve been a loyal fan of CHUCK ever since Season 1, Episode 1. And let me tell you, I have enjoyed every single episode from every season.
The first season was great because we got to see Chuck struggle with his newfound “powers” AKA the birth of a hero.
Season 2 we got more character development from each character, which is the same with every sequel to anything else out there. And this is where the hero’s journey really begins.
Season 3 was EPIC, cause let’s face it, Intersect 2.0, Chuck and Sarah finally together, and Daniel Shaw was the villian you loved to hate (which is what the writers were going for anyways), and there were more twists than a package of twizzlers!
This season, I haven’t been disappointed yet. Every single episode has been fantastic, and I can’t wait till the next episode to see what happens. I’m still laughing and enjoying it every week.
So please, if you don’t like it, go watch something else…

  10. Hey Mel; Maybe you could put a warning at the beginning of reviews (Thumbs up/thumbs down). Everyone has the choice to read the review or not; this might give those that don’t like negative reviews a chance to skip it, while those that agree or are not bothered by the negativity can go ahead and read it. What do you think Chucksters?

    • I generally don’t have a problem with reviews, it’s the comments left on them and just about every other article on every site. If the negatives outweigh the positives by that much, what’s the point of some of these people even watching the show?

  11. Okay, everyone repeat after me, ‘Chuck’ is a television show, it is not real. Once again, ‘Chuck’ is a television show, it is not real. We are Chuck fans, we are not trekkies (well, maybe some of you are, my condolences); Chuck is the little show that could. We have to remember that, we can’t take it too seriously, because well… we are not trekkies. This past Monday’s episode was a good episode. IMHO, the best of this season. My hatred of Morgan was assuaged when his inanity was somewhat watered down. Sarah was better in this episode than she was in her breakout episode, S4E9. Chuck is still Chuck, Casey is the one whose turn it was to grow this week. The Gronka bit was a little clunky in its execution but its all good, especially when you remember that ‘Chuck’ is a television show, it is not real.

  12. I think we all need to take a deep breath and remember that if you nit-pick ANYTHING, you will find a reason to be disappointed. TV is supposed to be a chance to escape from the everyday crap of life, sit back, and enjoy an hour off. I choose to make my Monday night escape, an escape into the joyfully fun, sometimes unrealistic world of Chuck.

It doesn’t bother me that sometimes there are little plot holes or narrative devices that seems out of place, etc because I’m simply not looking for them. I’m just going to sit back an enjoy the stories as they unfold.

Chuck is a show that has always brought a smile to my face, and has continued to do so this season, so I’m going to keep watching and keep letting it make me happy for an hour on Monday nights.

    • I agree with you 100%, it’s exactely how I feel. I don’t understand when people started being so picky and forgot to just enjoy it. Of course, every episode won’t be perfect, but at the end, it’s still a very good show and I enjoy every hour I passed watching it (even when I’m frustrated by something that’s happening or don’t agree with a choice they made) and I just hope everybody else would do the same. And I guess, that is what you can call a real fan.

  13. Well If the promos didn’t before hand show Sarah hitting Casey through a high story building window the opening scene may have had more appeal for you.

other reviews thought this episode had a the usual pack full of Chuck events that not enough time was spent to setup or show us certain events enough to maximize the tension and help the views bond well with episode. I didn’t mind them in this case telling us Sarah been for weeks taking assignment in Europe to get noticed by Volkoff.

I think Chuck was in denial about his concerns with Sarah repeating a mission that had his mom gone for 20 years. it appears Volkoff enjoys bending people to his will and likes to see them squirm. He is one really crazy bad guy. The mind games he was playing with Chuck and the more it looked like Sarah was being driven to do things Chuck knew she wouldn’t do. I think this is going to make him even more determined to bring him down. Right now to me he is confused and worried for Sarah.

The prison scene didn’t really add much value. A diversion was needed and Morgan/Casey role wasn’t all that bad it just Chuck could of been better utilized than picking a fight.

I think we got a glimpse as to what happened to Mary she compromised herself so much she needed to distance herself. I thought it was nice Mary/Sarah bonding I really sure I enjoy Sarah refusing Chuck’s call. I’m hoping the next episode sheds more light on some still lingering questions I think it will

I enjoy your honesty and am sorry Chuck hasn’t been all that appealing these last episodes It does seem Chuck spy growth is at a pace much slower than other characters. It could be family theme draws away from this and him focused on developing his relationship with Sarah. What I do like is that the show does try to resolve the issues they used to keep them apart in previous seasons.

Sorry for so long a post and hope you get to feeling better

  14. You guys are truly acting like pre-teens. We love Chuck, we obviously do to be on this website, but the reviewer has valid points. The writing on Chuck has been extremely LAZY recently, and although the show has always been unrealistic, it’s as if they don’t care enough anymore to try to make it SOMEWHAT believable. Also the comedy has taken a more immature route. I love Chuck but if you think Season 4 is anywhere near as good as Season 2, or even season 3, you’re in denial.

    • It’s called an opinion. If some of us like something that you don’t, that doesn’t mean we’re lying about it. Some of you need to look back at the first two seasons and realize how unrealistic those could be as well. In that regard, season 4 hasn’t really been that different.

  15. how bout all dis baby talk in this episode…
what if on mondays episode (when ellie gives birth), awesome sees the baby coming and then faints…. then ellie calls chuck and then chuck walks in and faints… then morgan faints
and sarah helps ellie give birth

  16. I like reading reviews but people have to remenber that they are expressing a personal opinion that is there right and it is you can disagree but you should respect there opinion.
I do sometimes get the feeling that reviewers watch the show just once while I as a fan will watch it repeatedly usually 4-5 times in the week between episodes at least twice in the first 24 hours. In Chuck there is so much going on that sometimes I dont pick up on things till the second rewatch and so I am going to assume that this reviewer only watched it once and the fact that it is not the highlight of there monday colours my perception as it means that they are not a fan.
It does not bother me when reviewers give there opinion what does bother me when they are wrong about something ie the time frame before Sarah is bought in to Volkoff as in this review it is like a 2-3 day but it is clearly explained that it has been more like weeks so when people this kind of mistakes it make me wonder if they even watched the episode at all.
I just moan when people say that the show is jumping the shark as I have to say i love season 4 and i do think it is equal to series 2 (the best season yet) at the moment and will finish ahead of that because I think as the new writers will get better and better.

  17. I agree that that style of opening is usually lame. I’m watching Alias from Netflix and it seems like every other episode of that show starts like that. Thankfully Chuck doesn’t use that device too often. Aside from that, I very much enjoyed this episode. Sure there are parts that may not stand up to strict logical scrutiny, but that’s not really what Chuck is about anyway. The plots are supposed to be ridiculous!

  18. I don’t understand why everyone’s being so negative. It didn’t have as much comedy moments in it as it usually does, but Chuck isn’t just a comedy show, it’s got action and romance etc.. Were lucky to be able to see it so shouldn’t we appreciate that? People who say ‘Just end the show now’..If you didn’t like it don’t watch it? But there’s a lot of people who love Chuck and would do just about anything to keep it going. I don’t care if one episode of Chuck wasn’t as good as another, because it’s Chuck! I enjoy every single episode and can never wait for the next one.

  19. I tried to post a comment but it went to comment waste line So I not sure repeat it again 🙁

  20. If the promo for this episode had not shown Sarah/Casey fighting with Casey going out the window it may have had more of a favorable effect. This episode did pack a lot of information as usual for a Chuck episode. Seasons past the show been criticized not taking the time to setup events. CF seems to enjoy doing this. I can except being told Sarah was undercover for weeks before Volkoff setup a meeting.

I think Chuck worried Sarah will be drawn to deep like his mother and he been trying to convince himself everything will be OK. It appears Volkoff enjoys bending people to his will and making them do things that don’t like to do. The mind games plays with Chuck

I hoping more answers will be revealed Monday But upon first viewing this episode had me feeling somewhat confused. it was about average as a standalone. may have more impact after 4.13

Hope you get to feeling better and Chuck starts to be more enjoyable soon

  21. I think this type of criticism has been goign on since season 3 when the writers kind of dropped the ball with breaking up the original core.

It is kind of a pattern for JS shows. Look at the OC

1st two seasons- everybody loves it.
    3rd season- disaster strikes
4th season – recovery ok but still not as good as before.

  22. A reviewer needs to be accurate when reviewing something whether positive or negative. Obviously you weren’t paying much attention to the show – perhaps if you had been you would have laughed at least a couple of times and maybe even gotten some of the story right!

    For instance:

Chuck says early on that Sarah had been gone a ‘few weeks’, not the two days you claim.

We first saw Sarah in Moscow from which she went to L. A. and then Oregon then back to Moscow. Once there Volkoff almost immediately shot Yuri & they headed back to L. A. At the end Sarah is on her way back to Moscow. So it’s rather fewer than ‘three bazillion’ trips more like just 1.5 round trips which may be pushing it but probably doable in a private jet.

I guess that other agents besides Team Bartowski could have been used at the prison – but then you would have complained about the lack of screen time for Chuck, Morgan & Casey.

Chuck obviously does mind Sarah’s going off on this mission – again, weren’t you watching? Do they have to spell everything out – just look at Chuck’s reactions.

And no we the audience know that there is no risk of Sarah’s going bad – but Chuck having already seen it apparently happen with his mother has good reason to fear that the same might happen to Sarah.

    • Mmm but Sarah also came to the Castle to tell about her mission to get the Gobbler out of prison. I think it is included in the two-days time frame. Which would make 2 or 2.5 trips if she went back to Russia.
I don’t know why the writers didn’t decide that it would be “five days before” or a week. It was easy, more believable and wouldn’t have deflated the tension.

By the way, I’ve also wondered why Sarah would ask Chuck and Casey to help her with the prison but then I realised that they’re her team so it is normal she would work with them. Moreover the less other people know about her undercover mission, the better it is.

Finally the other reviewer didn’t understand how Sarah would go so high in the Volkoff organization hierarchy after some weeks but it can be explained by the fact that Volkoff knows her. She’s not a random CIA rogue agent, she’s the girlfriend of Frost’s son.

All this to say that though there are some plot holes, they’re not as many and as big that it may seem. Maybe they shoudl explain more so that it won’t look like illogics.

  23. I honestly enjoy reading the reviews whether the reviewer liked the episode or not. What I cannot stand is the comments. The fact that we have a season 4 is a miracle in and of itself. The fact that we got extra 11 episodes is crazy! So can’t we all just stop with all the negative and focus on the positive??? Like this episode, although was not the greatest, still was a Chuck episode and has nicely set up for episode 4.13. Why don’t you guys go write 4 seasons of a show and see how you do? Why don’t you go make a TV show that everyone likes and no one ever dislikes…its not possible. The writers, the creators, the prodyvers, the actors…they are all incredible…

  24. The Review has many valid points.
Telling anyone that he cannot dislike certain aspects of the show and still be a fan is weak attempt on emotional blackmail. And It’s simply… not true.

I will give every possible support I can to the show. But it’s nothing wrong with criticizing it too if deserved – because they can do better.

  25. I have really important question .. or maybe two — when will Chuck Season 4 be available on iTunes? What is up with Apple! And, if iTunes doesn’t have the episodes, when will Chuck Season 4 Episode 11 and beyond be available on Amazon? Does anyone know???

    • We don’t know. What we do know is that Warner Bros. is negotiating the licensing fees with both outlets. *sigh*

  26. chuck week reminder march 7-14 get your friends to buy and watch the first three seasons of chuck
