She Said: Chuck vs. the Seduction Impossible Review

Hey fellow Chuckophiles,

I’ve been enjoying the “he said, she said” reviews of the episodes this season and was disappointed to hear that Josie was stepping down. Sometime over the weekend I got the crazy idea that maybe I could channel my Chuck obsession into a women’s perspective review of my own. This is my first attempt at an online TV review and constructive criticism is welcome. Let us know whether you would like to see more reviews in the future.

Thanks!
Cay

Chuck 4.14: Chuck v the Seduction Impossible

This week’s theme = Girl Power

It’s really sad that this week’s entertaining episode garnered such low ratings. It was great to have a fun stand alone ep this week after the first half of the season was so heavy on mythology. The episode reminded me a lot of seasons 1 and 2. Not only that, but all the female characters got great scenes!

I loved that the episode started out with what appeared to be domestic “bliss” as everyone helped out with baby Clara, but as soon as the conversation shifted to Chuck and Sarah’s upcoming wedding, it became clear that our three favorite spies had about overdosed on family togetherness and were eager for a mission. I feel for Sarah, she’s really had to absorb a lot of changes in her life since she met Chuck – she went from an independent, devil-may-care kicka** superbabe to a kicka** superbabe with a ton of complicated emotional attachments! It reminds me of the pilot, on Chuck and Sarah’s “first date”, when he promised to be her “personal baggage handler”. They’ve both done plenty of “baggage handling” since then.

I also enjoyed the packing scene in Castle – nice sex reversal where Sarah is the light packer and Chuck wants to make sure he is prepared for anything, including a “shoot dance”. Also great that Sarah wants to elope and Chuck wants a big family wedding. I have to come down on Chuck’s side for the packing, but Sarah’s wedding plan is tempting with my large family, I’ll admit.

How inevitable was it that Chuck would end up getting them captured in Morocco? I found it very amusing that they were worried about his sneeze giving them away, but not their loudly whispered conversation about the sneeze giving them away. Of course their capture led to Chuck finally being honest with Sarah, while Roan plays his role as therapist. I wish they would be more honest with each other without a third party involved, but at least Roan seems to give better relationship advice than Morgan. (Anybody else wishing they could pull off that belly dancer costume like Sarah?)

It was nice to get a bit of the back story on Beckman. I wonder how she and Roan influenced the 2000 election – did they give new meaning to “hanging chads”?

The scene with Ellie and Mama B was perfect – Ellie has come a long way towards healing since both of her parents came back into her life (even though Papa B’s time was short). I liked that Mama B started fiddling with Clara’s bottle when Ellie told her that she made Chuck quit the CIA but then made eye contact and told her that “he is a Bartowski” – she didn’t give Chuck away, but subtly planted the suggestion that Chuck is doing what he is meant to do. I appreciate the fact Ellie is no longer in the dark about her family’s history. I hope that she will be understanding when she finds out that Chuck hasn’t given it all up after all.

The last scene with Chuck and Sarah nicely set up the future episodes and it appears that the first half theme of “family” is going to continue to be a theme in the back 11. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the episodes unspool!

Other stuff I liked:

  • Chuck and Sarah both trying to seduce each other into submission re: wedding plans
  • Mama B’s spy/fairytale bedtime story
  • Roan tied to the bed – first Chuck, then Casey, now Roan – are we to believe that male spies often find themselves in this compromising position?
  • Female revolutionaries in camo pants, tank tops, berets and BIG GUNS
  • Casey’s failed attempt at seducing the guard
  • Fatamah’s repeated use of “1 trillion dollars” – I wanted to hear an evil laugh and see her pinkie up by her mouth
  • General Beckman gave Roan a watch with a tracking device for his B-day
  • Chuck: “all this interpersonal stuff on a mission – so unprofessional” followed up by a discussion of the wedding while Casey is still stuck in the wall
  • Little General Beckman with a huge rocket launcher

  1. One of my favorite episodes of CHUCK form ALL FOUR seasons! Just the right mix of comedy, action, drama, and even an appropriate amount of angst. It was the perfect CHUCK “recipe.” A+ all the way around. Kudos to the writers for coming up with a great story, and ROCK ON to the actors for pulling it off so beautifully.

Oh please, oh please, oh please, let’s find a way to get at least one more season, even a “short one!”

Keep on Chuckin’ all you Chuckaholics. It aint over til it’s over. Or until the Fat Lady Sings. Or until someone at NBC says it is!

We’ve always fought for this show. Let’s not start now. Flood your Facebooks, Twitters, emails, TV guide polls and whatever else is out there with CHUCK, CHUCK, CHUCK! And PLEASE, don’t forget Subway! They’ve helped get us this far, we need to remember to return their loyalty.

    Peace, all.

  2. Welcome aboard Cay!

Picked a great episode to jump in with.

All the best with your future reviews!

  3. World Class episode 😀 Sorry, shall I say Chuck Class? Coz nothing can compete with Chuck! 😀

  4. Great review Cay. I finally totally agreed with a review….amazing, might be a first for me. I really hope you come back and do more. You clearly are a long time Chuck fan (loved the reference to the Pilot…still one of my top 5 favorite episodes ever) which leads me to believe you are a “real” Chuckolholic too. I loved this episode and it’s lightness was very reminiscient of the Honeymooners last year, which followed the very heavy, arc wrapping “almost” S3 finale of “The Other Guy.” I am very happy now that the Bartowski’s are seeimingly intact (still hoping for Papa B. to be resurected) we can concentrate on Sarah and her family, most especially because I REALLY want to see Gary Cole again. Next week looks to be Sarah-centric too, so more will be revealed with Carina back again. Yay! More “Girl Power” on the way. :-).

  5. I, too, would like to see Sarah pull off the belly dancer’s costume.

    • Going by Yvonne’s recent tweet, it’s her first time ever to belly dance. So she did pull off that dance pretty damn good!

  6. Cay,
Thanks for stepping in and doing such a good job. This is amongst the funniest episodes we have ever had of Chuck. I appreciate even though you are giving the woman’s perspective, you provided a link to the belly dancing scene for us guys.

Besides the belly dancing scene, I think my favourite part was when they were in the dungeon. Both the Chuck/Sarah/Roan interactions and Casey’s seduction of the guard – tranq and explode Casey. LOL

  7. Hey Cay, greetings. I enjoy seeing the guy’s and girl’s perspective, so I’m glad you picked up the baton.

Chuck is my favorite show (I only actually watch 2 TV shows, and Chuck is one of them) and every episode has at least a couple moments I laugh out loud at. (or my jaw drops, like the belly dance outfit!) That being said, and maybe it was just me, but Beckman with the rocket launcher seemed a bit like a jump the shark moment to me.

  8. Thanks for your support, guys!

Sorry Gord, can’t take credit for the vid, I think it was Mel’s work.

    Renita,
Yep, Fedak and Schwartz “had me at hello”. I was hooked from the first 5 minutes of the pilot the first time it aired.

Lou, I sent my review to Mel about 5 minutes before I saw that yours was posted. Made mine look a bit amateurish. Oh well, gotta start somewhere! 🙂

    Joe,
The first time I watched I thought that Beckman with the rocket launcher was ridiculous. One second watch, I still thought it was rather ridiculous, but also decided it was intentional camp.It wasn’t the idea so much as how it was filmed. I think it’s too small a plot point to fit the “jump the shark” scenario, but I am certainly not going to complain if they stay to slightly more realistic scenes for the rest of the season. I am willing to suspend disbelief sometimes if it means I enjoy the show more, unless it’s something medical… 😉

  9. Did anyone else notice that Sarah wasn’t wearing the ring?

    • She actually was. Check the scene following the “Bellydancer” scene where she had the red turtleneck on. Look at her hand there, you can see the shine of the engagement ring. It was like the writers put it there as a “See? We do use it, god!” Haha. But yes, it is there.

  10. Now.. @Cay, welcome aboard! Awesome review here, and definitely an awesome episode to jump in and do your first review for. Yeah, it stinks that Josie decided to move on, but as they say; life goes on!

You did an awesome job channeling your “Chuck obsession” for this and I can say that I’m looking forward to seeing more from you as the season moves on. Keep up the great work!

  11. Great first review Cay!It is nice to have someone who still loves the show picking up the she said side on the reviews.Like you I was hooked from the beginning of Pilot.I look forward to reading more of your reviews.

  12. dame!
ıt was the greatest review I’ve ever read! 😀

  13. Damn you for making me wonder what “hanging chad” could mean to Roan and Beckman!
jk… great review, looking forward to more.

  14. I think Clara´s future career is set :-))

  15. Welcome, Cay,I look forward to your reviews/perspective (Yeah Girl Power!)

Enjoyed this ep, it did have the Seas. 1-2 feel to it. Agree w/your comments about changes in Sarah’s personal/emotional life. I also liked the packing scene, very funny. Belly Dancing costume – Yep, it’s been awhile since I had a figure like hers (Oh wait, I’ve NEVER had a figure like hers!)

Loved the Mama B / Ellie Scene, very touching.

Great job, thanks. Keep up the good work.
    Melissa

GREAT REVIEW, keep up the good work, Cay

  17. Girl Power is the last term I’d use to describe this episode. Chuck’s first all-female villains were played largely for laughs, and really as little more than a foil for the whole Roan seduction thing.

Sarah had little to do in the episode except look hot. Yeah, she does it wheel, but I prefer action Sarah to eye-candy Sarah.

In many ways, there was a kind of 60’s spy movie feel to the role of women in this episode. I ain’t saying it was an bad episode – but as much as I love the comedy of Chuck, I ain’t as keen when it renders the threat/adventure elements of a story largely redundant.

    • Symon,
I see where you are coming from, but here’s my take:
Pretty much all the villains on Chuck (and many other spy shows) are to some extent played for laughs. How many times have we seen Sarah use the drunk goofy blonde routine to overpower the baddies? What I really liked is that this is one of the first episodes that seemed to really concentrate on the female regulars – Ellie, Beckman, Mama B – and have a large female supporting cast. The plot was driven by the strong woman – it was Beckman’s history with Roan that drove Plot A and Ellie and Mama B for plot C. Meanwhile, intertwined, was Plot B – Sarah’s continuing emotional evolution and her response to all the changes in her life.
      Just my take, discussion welcome!

      Cay 🙂

  18. And for the record, Sarah does eye candy WELL. As opposed to wheel! 😉

  19. Worst episode this season.

  20. The writers are forgetting what made this show so good. Get back to missions, covers and secrets like season 1 and 2.

*One little detail, isn´t General Beckman married or something? Because as far as I remember, at some point on Chuck vs the Tooth, after Chuck´s dream about the assassination of Zamibia´s president at the Beethoven´s concert, we can clearly see what is probably the kitchen of Beckman´s house, and an old man shows up. Just sayin`
