She Said: Chuck 4.17 – Chuck vs the First Bank of Evil

Hello all!

Wow, there was a lot to like about this week’s episode! While it wasn’t as funny as many episodes, it made up for it with drama and action. I also thought it got better on the second viewing, which is when I usually tend to be more critical.

The highlight of the episode for me was the Chuck-Vivian storyline and the intricate parallels between their lives. Both are extremely intelligent, emotionally vulnerable and grew up essentially as orphans (I’ve very curious who Vivian’s mother might be). Despite their absence from their lives, their fathers have subtly groomed them for greatness in ways they are only now learning. Initially, both were dragged somewhat unwillingly into the spy world but each have special skills that help them succeed. The conversation where Chuck convinces Vivian to help out with the mission at the Bank of Macau is very reminiscent of some early Sarah-Chuck conversations in S1. There’s great chemistry between the two, which really draws the viewer into their scenes.

Volkoff’s lawyer, Riley, has some impressive omniscience – he’s always in the right place at the right time and obviously has a lot of information both about Chuck and the CIA and about Vivian and her motivations. It really makes me wonder where he gets his information (is he somehow in contact with Volkoff?). I was really suspicious when Vivian’s character was first introduced, and during the first few minutes of this episode, that she was going to turn out to be evil, but now I’m leaning towards the idea that she’s good, but could be manipulated into losing track of which side is which and thus taking a turn towards the dark side (or is she just pretending to be manipulated?).

I loved the plot twist at the end of the episode that Riley seems to have convinced Vivian that Chuck is betraying her. I was getting really worried that Chuck was telling her too much, not unlike the mistake he made with Volkoff senior in the sheep truck in 4.07, and that she was going to use that information to betray him. Of course Vivian now thinks that Chuck was doing exactly the same thing to her. The scene where Chuck contemplates how he has unintentionally let her down is very reminiscent of the end of Chuck vs the Nacho Sampler, although the repercussions for Vivian and for Chuck are less immediately obvious (and much more critical to the overall plot) than for Manoosh.

The reveal of the holographic spy closet in Castle was interesting. (Sure beats trying on everything you own in front of your mirror while dumping the rejects on your bed!) Clearly Chuck didn’t use it prior to picking out that ridiculous ‘stache he wore for the first trip to the bank. It was sad and a little strange that the dress Sarah picked out happened to be full of bullet holes. Someone superstitious might consider that a bad omen, then again, maybe that’s what happens when you “shop” in a secret CIA base. While “Bridezilla” Sarah was mildly amusing and we got a few more of the Ellie-Sarah scenes we’ve been asking for, I wasn’t sure that Sarah’s quick turnaround was in character and it felt like a weak link in an otherwise strong episode.

We got a brief glimpse of what’s going on down in the new Castle annex, courtesy of Morgan. Whatever the TR476, it must be important if Casey is willing to live with Morgan to protect the secret. Here’s hoping we get some great Odd Couple-esque scenes next week.

A final comment on the bank robbery scene: I really liked the Matrix meets Tarantino meets Bonnie and Clyde theme, with Chuck for once actually pulling off the dispassionate supervillain routine. I enjoyed the irony of him and Sarah discussing wedding plans while brandishing large guns and threatening bodily harm to everyone around them. (Does that make me a bad person?)

I’m going to go play with my holographic closet while you guys tell me what YOU thought of the episode!

Notables:
Vivian has some mad skillz, not to mention a calm head on her shoulders!
Morgan’s roommate ad: “fabulously bearded man”
“If you’re going to live in the forest, don’t complain about the noise the wildlife makes” – Big Mike to Morgan
Riley doing a very poor job mimicking Volkoff’s voice when he read the letter to Vivian
“I’ll be your Kevin Costner” – Chuck to Vivian (OMG, that was…like…my favorite movie freshman year in high school!)
“I’m growing mentally, emotionally, physically…not so much physically” – Morgan
“Let’s hook up later. We’ll get facials and chat” – Casey to Sarah and Chuck

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Chuck series finale. It feels like a decade …

  1. a little part of me really really want vivian to be a villain… because the CIA break their promise -like they did to chuck in season 1 or 2-…..

  2. I actually *loved* the bit with Sarah picking out her dress. Her facial reactions and everything while going through them were great (I loved the bit with her tossing the longer part of the dress on top of her head to walk off).. and then her realization at the end? Just perfect.

And we know Sarah likes to throw herself ‘all in’ so to speak when she gets into something. I can’t wait to see how that all progresses.

    • Quite frankly, I’m surprised she took the one with the long train out of the closet at all.

  3. “Get down on the ground before I blow you’re freaking head off!!”
“Don’t be a hero my friend or I’ll break your face!”
    “I felt like a princess.”
“Oh my god, it’s perfect. We’re getting married. Oh my god we’re getting married?!” (: (:
“Let’s hook up later. We’ll get facials and chat”
“If you’re going to live in the forest, don’t complain about the noise the wildlife makes.”
    *and much much more!!!*
To me…these are some of the best quotes of the episode!!!

  4. I hated the dress Sarah chose. I thought one of the earlier ones was much better. Her silly turnaround at the end & the whole Morgan/Casey cohabitating thing felt too contrived.

I still use a VCR to record episodes; I keep the ones I like. Using on-demand I edit down the ones I’m not thrilled with. This one came down to 15 minutes with all the bits that fell flat. And while others no doubt found Charah’s repartee during the bank heist delightful, Sarah made a HUGE error. She mentioned Ellie’s name, thereby giving witnesses a potential clue to their real identities.

  5. “Princess” Sarah is a BAMF and Chuck should never grow a ‘stache. lol Oh am I the only who thought Zach/Chuck looked hot while robbing the bank? 😉

    • LOL, you are absolutely not the only one! I think he looks hot doing nearly everything… 🙂

      • Yes!!! He was very hot in that scene for sure. Both of them were. The lobby scene from the Matrix is one of my all time favorites so I loved that homage and the whole talking about the wedding thing and then blowing people away was too priceless. Sarah and the dresses was my second favorite scene, she just looked so genuinely happy. Fun episode all around and Ray Wise is always so devilishly good. Bummed there is no episode next week, especially with two great weeks in a row, the momentum gets interrupted when they do this! :-{

  6. Is there and episode of chuck next week?

    • No, “Chuck Versus the A-Team” will air on March 14. “The Event” is what will be airing next Monday.

  7. I do have to say on the positive side that the whole Jeffster Rennaisance Fair/roommate thing, and Morgan’s responses to it, made me laugh.

  8. Cay your comment about Volkoff’s lawyer Riley, “It really makes me wonder where he gets his information (is he somehow in contact with Volkoff?)” is all too likely. Remember Volkoff Industries was far-reaching. Clearly the Hydra database didn’t have Riley listed. Who else may have been missed, Jane Bentley with the National Clandestine Service? At the very least I am suspicious that the Riley and Bentley characters have shown up at the same time. Are they borh working for Volkoff or are they working independently to weaken and ultimately destroy Team Bartowski?

  9. I like Sarah’s skittish nature when it comes to her having to come to terms with the wedding itself. The swing from clueless detachment to a sense of enthusiasm and command are two facets of her personality with which we are already familiar in other settings. That it happened so quickly and completely was jarring, but Ellie prepped her (and us) for the transformation, when she told Sarah that wrapping her head around the issue of the dress would trigger the epiphany. And those fans who are familiar with the deleted scenes from Ellie’s wedding ep in season 2 (“the Ring”) saw how Sarah could melt down just having to handle Ellie’s wedding stress.

  10. And, I forgot to mention, how about that wedding dress! It’s both used and in the CIA inventory. What are the chances that it was Mary Bartowski’s wedding dress?

  11. Nice review and I like points you discussed. Watching these characters grow it what nice about the show. I hope they continue inn a fun and enjoyable way. Thanks for sharing

  12. Mel – may want to post this link on a separate thread. Hulu is taking an online poll for “best show in 2010.” Chuck right now is up against Big Bang Theory, and we’re actually winning. We know BBT has WAY more Nielsen viewers than CHUCK, but this is a way for CHUCK viewers to be counted. From what I understand, HULU is partially owned by NBC – so they might take notice.

    Here’s the link: http://www.hulu.com/bestinshow

So GO FOR IT, Chuck fans! Vote early. Vote often!!! GO CHUCK!! 🙂

Season 4 is actually my absolute favourite of them all. While I did have my problems with this episode and with the character of Vivian so far, these past 4 episodes have been fantastic. As for the chemistry between Chuck and Sarah, it has only gotten even better in my opinion.

A lot of people are expecting the characters to be exactly the same as they were at the start of the show. It is called character growth, look it up! The characters have grown from what they were at the start because they are actual people, not two-dimensional pieces of cardboard. Have Sarah and Casey softened up over time, yes, a lot. Do I still believe that they are badass and can kick massive ass? You better believe I do. People seem to expect this show to be something it isn’t. I have absolutely loved it, especially these past 4 episodes, they have been fantastic.

This has got nothing to do with being loyal to the show. Am I incredibly loyal to this show? Yes, of course I am. But have I loved this season for reasons other than simply being loyal, you bet!
    CHARAH 4 EVER!!
